IdeasEpisode#37,presentedbyBloombergandHyundaiMotor,features

SamsonYoung,whofullyembodieshismottoinhisartworks.

SamsonYoung’sinterestinmusicstartedfromhischildhoodinAustralia.Like

afever,hehadbeenpossessedinplayingeveryinstrument.Thisexperience

becameasolidbaseofhiscreativeworldtoday.Studyingmusiccomposition

intheU.S.afterwards,hewasinspiredbymanymusiciansandstartedhis

artisticexperiments.Ashecontinuedtoexperimentwithmusic,hisworks

graduallyproceededtowardsanewdirection,notbeinglimitedtocertain

musicgenres.Interactiveperformanceartwasoneofthemanyareashe

approached.<MemorizingtheTristanChord>(2013)isbasedon<Tristanund

Isolde>bytheGermancomposerRichardWagner.SamsonYounglet70

peopleinfrontofacameratoputChinesewordstheywantrespectivelyto

themusic,whichisbeyondthetraditionalformofcomposition.Keepingthe

chordsofthemusic,heletthepeoplesingwhatevercomestotheirmindat

themoment.Somesangtheoriginallyrics,whileotherspontaneouslyspoke

aboutissuesintheirmindssuchaspolitics,history,ordailylives,putting

uniquespinsofeachindividualonthemusic,whichhasaremarkable

meaninginthemusichistory.Totheartist,whohastriednewthingsthrough

thecreativeprocesses,artisnotaboutsendingamessagebutajourneyfor

solvingcomplexissuesintheworld.Hewantstogoonthisjourneywiththe

viewers.

Communicationbetweenmusicandart

<SoYouAreOldBytheTimeYouReachtheIsland>(2016)wascommissioned

by‘ArtBaselHongKong2016.’Inthisinteractivework,theparticipants

walkedonthe60-minuterouteindowntownHongKongdesignedbythe

artistinadvance.Theplacewherethisprojectwasconductedwaswherethe

pro-democracyUmbrellaRevolutionoccurredin2014,whichcarries

tremendousimportanceinsocialandhistoricalaspects.Whiletryingtoreach

thedestinationwiththekitforfindingdirectionsincludingaradio,amap,

andacompassgivenbeforehand,theparticipantsfacedliveperformances

andrecordedsoundshiddeninseveralplaces.Whentheyarrivedatthe

destination,theyreceivedaphonenumber,whichSamsonYounganswered,

standingonahighway.Theprojectendedwiththeartistsingingasongto

eachparticipant.Thisprojectrepresentedhisintenttoaddimportancetothe

meaningfulplacebycommunicatingthroughasongwithpeople.

SamsonYoungisfamousfortravellingbetweenexperimentalmusicand

soundsandcontemporaryart.Hisintensiveresearchfortheartworksalso

standsout.Inparticular,hefocusesonstudyingthehistoryofaplaceand

lettingpeopleknowaboutthehistorythroughsounds.<LiquidBorders>

(2012-2014)isaworkthatintroducedsounddrawing,anewbreakthroughin

art.Theprojectstartedin2012,whentheHongKonggovernmentdecidedto

opentheborderbetweenChinaandHongKong,heconcentratedonthe

anxietythathadbeengrowingabouttheopening.Youngbeganhisresearch

bywalkingalongthepathstretchedontheborderalongsidethebarber-

wiredfence,feelingthevibrationonthewirecreatedbyexternalfactors.He

wentonandmadeanarchiveofrecordscontainedinthebarbedwires.Some

mayhaveimaginedthesoundofthewirestobeambiguous,whileothers

maynothaveeventhoughtabouthowitwouldsound;thesoundswerelow-

pitchedandquietdefyingexpectations,leadingYoungtowardsanewform

ofimagination.Theartistrecordedthesoundofthewiresandthe

surroundingenvironment,madeitintoascoreusingavoicesynthesis

Openingnewchapterofart

system,andthentransformeditintographics.Addedwiththedrawingsof

booklets,pictures,andmapspublishedbythegovernment,theartwork

introducedapathtoanewstyleinwhichmusicandartwascombined.

In2015,YoungmadehisnameintheartsceneofNewYork.Displayedathis

debutexhibitioninNewYork,<Nocturne>(2015)approachedtheviewersin

anunusualmannerunlikeotherartworks.Removingsoundsfromthe

bombingfootagesaroundtheworldcollectedfromtheInternet,theartist

broughthouseholditemssuchasfansandplasticcontainerstothegallery

andcreatedsoundssimilartoexplosions.Thesoundsofdailylifeprocessed

byacomputerandthedisplayedvideoformedauniquescene.Thework

pointedouthowpeoplewereignorantofwarstheyonlyencounterindirectly

throughthemedia,whilebigandsmallwarsarealwaysgoingonthroughout

theworld.Italsometaphoricallyreflectedtheartist’sopinionaboutthe

politicalissues.Travellingtheboundariesofvariousgenresbeyondsimple

soundsandmusictosatisfypeople’sdesireforart,SamsonYoungisanartist

ofararekind.Saying“Myworksmayseemlackofunitybecausetheydonot

stayinoneplace.Butworkingwithsoundsiswhatgivesmemostpleasure

andhappiness,”SamsonYoungisanextraordinarymusicianand,atthesame

time,anartistwhoattemptstochangeourwayofthinking.■with
