FROM THE PRINCIPAL We have generally been fortunate in South Australia regarding the impact of COVID-19 and this term, as a school, we have been very pleased to be able to reinstate a range of curricular and extra-curricular activities that add to the richness of school life and our students’ learning and wellbeing. Annual events such as Music Spectacular have taken place with appropriate adjustments and enhancements, such as filming the performance for broader distribution. As always, the event itself lived up to its name. Our Year 12 Drama production of Arabian Nights was another huge success, showcasing the talents of the performing arts in our school, in the same way that our SALA exhibition did for visual arts. In Week 5 of this term we received media attention for having over 180 students involved in Write a Book in a Day, the highest participation rate of any school in Australia. As the name suggests, students work in teams to write and illustrate a book in a day, which involves significant organisational and team skills, as well as literary and literacy ability. e books are currently on display in the school library. Our Year 12 cohort have had a particularly difficult year with uncertainty around assessment arrangements and concern about a number of key events. As a group they have been incredibly resilient and supportive of each other and well supported by our senior school team and teachers. During the last week of Term 3 we held the School Formal at the Convention Centre and the Valedictory is scheduled for November 26 at the newly renovated Her Majesty’s eatre. e Year 12s have also organised activities such as Pyjama Day and Retro Day which have contributed to a positive atmosphere at school. Our sporting and outdoor education programs have also been reactivated and examples of some of these are contained in this newsletter. Of particular note is the performance of our Year 8/9 Girls Football team who became state champions – a fantastic effort! On a similar note, our Volleyball program performed wonderfully well in winning the State Cup with 25 teams out of 33 medalling: 10 gold medal-winning teams, 4 silver and 11 bronze. Another impressive aspect of our performance was that 310 students were involved in 33 teams and of the 56 coaches, 43 were old scholars including 17 from last year’s Year 12 cohort. is certainly speaks volumes for the culture of the program. Our Open Debating Team also reached the grand final of the Debating SA Schools Competition, unfortunately losing in a split decision. standard throughout the competition and represented Brighton Secondary School wonderfully well. If you’ve been past the school recently you might have noticed that our building project is moving ahead. The beach volleyball courts have been relocated adjacent to the back oval and the foundations have been poured for our new Middle School building. During Term 4 we should see further significant development in our new building as well as the long-awaited upstairs Spence refurbishment. Looking at the calendar, Term 4 is going to be a very busy term. We have Year 12 external exams, Year 11 school exams, a range of special events and performances, as well as preparing for and welcoming 300 plus Year 7 students into Year 8 in 2021. Behind the scenes we will be preparing the timetable and staffing for next year, based on the course counselling processes families were involved in last term.As always, we appreciate the support of our families and wider school community and look forward to working with you in the final term of this year.

2Saxy Online SeminarOn Sunday 23 August, Amelie, a year 9 SIM student from Brighton Secondary School was offered an amazing opportunity through Presto Musical Repairs and Yamaha Australia to meet and play for 2 powerhouse American Saxophone players, Grace Kelly and Leo P. The YouTube/Zoom workshop began with a 40-minute tutorial from the NYC saxophonists and ended with 3 students (1 from Brisbane, 1 from Perth and Amelie from Adelaide) playing to Grace and Leo for feedback. They gave excellent feedback and it was a valuable experience for the students. OUTDOOR EDUCATION NEWSOn Wednesday 5 August our SACE Stage 1 Outdoor Education class went rock climbing at Onkaparinga National Park. We have been planning this experience in class, investigating risk management, group dynamics, belaying techniques and knot tying as well as environmental etiquette. All students attempted to rock climb and abseil. Some found the experience confronting and worked with their peers to overcome their challenges and fears. Others embraced the challenge and seek to further their skills with the support from their peers and instructors. Students evaluated how they went about problem solving and facing challenges. From here, we will continue to develop our physical skills, reflect on our experience, learn from it and look forward to applying them in another great experience at Morialta later in the term.

-Peter Vowles -Health Lifestyles Coordinator

Our Outdoor Education classes rock climbing trips were great. We went to Morialta and Onkaparinga, both environments were different, but really nice. We found the experience challenging, but with the support of our instructors, teacher and peers we succeeded. The walls are around 30m tall andwe felt exposed, having to trust our peers and the equipment we had learnt about. It was intimidating, but with help and trust from the people below it was a whole lot of fun.

Year 12 SIV AquaticsA part of the Stage 2 Integrated Learning Course is an aquatics practical assessment task, involving exploring the different types of feedback that are received. The year 12 SIV classes attended the West Lakes Aquatic Centre for 3 days in week 4 of term 3. The students could choose between 2 activities, kayaking and sailing. Throughout the 3 days at the aquatic centre, the students learnt new skills and received various forms of feedback that they can use for their Multimodal Presentation Assessment Task. The class bonded together well throughout these activities, including the kayaking group going on a 6km kayak in the rain and some of the sailing groups capsizing accidently which they were not too happy about.

This year’s Group Production ‘Arabian Nights’ was a spectacular re-telling of ancient Arabic stories. 29 students took on all aspects of creating the production which required physical story telling skills as the actors simultaneously narrated and performed the characters. The musical score for piano was written and performed by Jameson Henderson-Redden and students accompanied the stories with percussion instruments adding to the live interactive feel of the show. Audiences responded positively and the performances were a great culminating experience for students who have participated in drama throughout their time at Brighton Secondary School.
