Brighton Life Saving Club – Newsletter (November 2017) SUMMER STARTS WITH A SPLASH Welcome everyone to another summer on the beach. As this if the first edition for summer 2017/2018, let’s introduce a few people. Club President: Troy Ross. Troy’s been a member for over 10 years. He loves the boards, and has competed for many years. He says he is happy to have a new ATV and 25 new Nipper boards this Season. Club Captain: Welcome to Janie Mackay who has taken on the role this season. She’s been a member since Summer 2015. “I know I haven’t met many of you, but I am excited about meeting and getting to know you all this summer! Surf Life Saving, through competition, patrol seasons, the challenges and special people, has been a huge part of growing up in since I joined as a nipper at the age of five. It’s set me up well for life challenges and continues now I’m in Australia at Brighton Life Saving Club. My home beach is Himatangi on the West Coast of New Zealand. It could not be more opposite than the calm waters of Brighton Beach, but in my short time here among the pretty special people I have met through the club, Brighton is starting to feel like home. Taking on this role as Club Captain is as much a thank you for everything Surf Life Saving and this Club has given to me over the years. As Club Captain I am here to help as much I can - if you have any questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Can’t wait to see you on the beach!”

Meet the patrol captains: Patrols started on Saturday 11 November and Sunday 12 November. First up was Mark Pratt’s team and next day was Alex Fletcher’s group. Mark Pratt: Mark has been a fixture around the club for the last 28 years. He joined the Club when he was 15. Now it’s a family affair with wife Claire the Nippers Co-coordinator, their boys being lifesavers of the future and Dad Rob, a “go to guy” and icy pole seller. The best thing for Mark about patrolling is all the different people you meet – tourists and different members of the club. There is always something different happening. Day job? He’s a plumber. Alex Fletcher: Alex joined BLSC in 2004. She’s been a member since she was a 7 year old Nipper - and that was 13 years ago. This month was Alex’s first patrol as captain and she’s excited about how much there is to learn. She says they’re a great team and an amazing group of people. Day job? She’s studying to be a paramedic - inspired by lifesaving. She also spends plenty of time at the Nippers’ program.
