PhD in Ceramic Materials and Surface Treatments

Defended the Doctorate Thesis on 5th May, 1995. An International Jury comprising of

Professors from Europe and America accepted the defense of the thesis, unanimously with a

very honorable grade. The work was related on the development of a Ceramic based

composite material to be used at high temperature. The Composite Material was coated by

5. Design, Development, Manufacture and Installation of a High Temperature Furnace at

the Laboratory of Ceramic Materials in the Faculty of Metallurgy and Materials

Engineering, GIK Institute. This furnace was built in collaboration with the University of

Limoges, Laboratory of Ceramic Materials and Surface Treatments, France. It is a controlled

atmosphere furnace which can heat up to 2100 ºC in any protective environment. The project

was completed in 2 years and inaugurated on 2nd May, 2002.

6. Development and Deposition of Chromia coatings on mild steel substrate, using

atmospheric blown arc Plasma Spraying. The project was conducted for ICI Polyester

Pakistan in 1997. The process parameters were defined and a Godet Roll was produced in

collaboration with Data Plasma technologies, Karachi. The roll is under use and is working

satisfactorily at the ICI Sheikhupura plant.

7. Study of Lithium Niobate single crystal after doping and annealing, through XRD and IR

Spectroscopy (1998). This work was performed for LT Engineering Hasanabdal, Pakistan, for

the purpose of developing Opto-Electric Wave Guides in lithium niobate. Doped litium

electronic devices.

8. Development of Synthetic Mullite as a refractory powder, for Commander Ceramics,

Gujranwala.

9. Synthesis and development of Strontium doped PZT Ceramics for Piezo Electric

application. These Perovskite type ceramics were calcined through mixtures of starting

Electric sensors for ultrasonic applications.

10. Sintering of Silicon and Titanium Carbide to near theoretical density. Remelting of the

carbide surface through Laser Surface Treatment to obtain glassy molten layers on the

ceramic surface. Carbides with 100% dense molten layers on the surface were produced,

showing close to amorphous structure. Future applications are the use of these ceramics as

electrodes for high temperature ionic conduction.

11. Study on the Effect of processing parameters on Boron doped silica preform rods

produced through Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) process. Various

processing techniques are used to synthesize optical fibers, MCVD is one of them. MCVD

process provides great flexibility in design, composition and dimensional control. A study of

physical properties like coefficient of thermal expansion and refractive index was done to

improve the quality of preforms.

12. Development of Zirconia Base Thermal barrier Coatings on Inconel 718 Substrate via

Atmospheric Plasma Spraying. These coatings were developed using Calcia doped partially

stabilized zirconia (Ca-PSZ) powder. Close to 95% dense coatings exhibited only Cubic phase

after spraying.
