FOREWARD

The Micro, Small and, Medium Enterprises, Development Institute (earlier called SISI), under

Ministry of MSME, Govt. of India, Bangalore is one of the prime organizations in Karnataka, engaged

in the promotion and development of Industries in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. As a

part of the promotional and developmental activities, the Institute conducts studies on the Status

and performance of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the State. The District profile is one

such report compiled and updated under District Industry Development Plan of the Institute

assigned by Office of the Development Commissioner (SSI), New Delhi. This report contains the

present status of economy, geographical information, statistical data relating to MSME’s in each

district, salient features of the progress of the different sectors of the each district of Karnataka and

performance of industries particularly in Micro, Small and Medium industries.

I am happy to appreciate the efforts put in by all the offices and staff in this institute

especially S/Shri. B.N.Sudhakar, Deputy Director,Sri. P.V.Raghavendra, Asst.Director (ISS),

Sri.K.Channabasavaiah and Smt. D.T.Vijayalakshmi . Asst.Director (Stat) in collecting the latest

information available form different departments of Government of Karnataka and in bringing out

this Industrial Profile report. I would also like to thank all Joint Directors of District Industry

Centres, Senior Officers of Statistics Division of Govt. of Karnataka, Director of Industries and

Brief Industrial Profile of KOLAR District

1. General Characteristics of the District: Situated in the south eastern part of Karnataka bounded by Tamil Nadu and Andhra

Pradesh spread across 5 taluks – Kolar, Bangarpet, Srinivaspura, Malur and Mulbagal Popularly known as the “Golden Land” of India, because of the presence of the Kolar Gold fields. Also famous as the land of Silk and Milk. Ranked No.1 in productivity and yield of horticultural crops. Introduction 1.1 Location & Geographical Area.: L

Located at 12˚ 46' to 13˚ 58’ North latitude and 77˚ 21‘ to 78˚ 35' East longitude ,

having temperature of 37 ˚ C (Max.) and 15 ˚ C (Min.) . Average Rain fall is around 744 mm. Palar, Uttara Pinakini and Dakshina Pinakini Rivers are flowing in the district. Total covered area of the district is 3,969 sq km

1.2 Topography: The district, at its greatest length, reaches about 135 km from north to south with almost the same distance from east to west. It occupies the table land of Mysore, bordering the eastern ghats. The general plateau surface is interrupted by a number of hills and peaks of varying heights, particularly in the north. Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) is a town in Kolar district which was once the primary gold mines in the country. Set up by the British, this town which is close to the border of Andhra Pradesh and has Tamil,Telugu and Anglo-Indian Population. Tamil people were employed by the British and brought to KGF from Tamil Nadu to work in the mines. Due to meager availability of Gold deposit and high cost of extraction, the gold mines stopped since 2003. 1.3 Availability of Minerals.

Textile: A dedicated Apparel zone is planned in the district along the Suvarna Karnataka Development Corridor.District also hosts a handloom cluster and a readymade garment cluster making the sector very vibrant in the district. TOURISM: Tourism Kolaramma temple: A Thousand year old temple built by the Cholas. The temple itself has beautifully carved statues and designs all done using the abundantly available granite stones. Someshwara temple : The temple is situated in the heart of Kolar town. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Someshwara. The temple is built in the 14th century Vijayanagara Empire early Vijaynagara style. Nawab Fateh Ali Khan Darga in Kolar town. Antharagange: Located 3 Kms from Kolar, is a sacred stream known for its scenic beauty and its variedflora and fauna. Kolar Gold Mines: is a mining town, about 22 Km from Kolar, east of Bangalore. The Champion reef mine isthe second deepest mine in the world Mulbagal: a popular tourist stopover, the Anjaneya temple, the Kurudamale temple and the tomb of Hyder Ali are a few attractions found here.
