Using the research gathered from my dissertation to raise awareness about
Operation Bluestar which took place in India in 1984, through Amnesty
International by creating a promotional pack that is sent out to Amnesty
subscribers encouraging them to be a part of the campaign.
CONCEPT
As the main focus of the campaign is about the media blackout and how it impacted
people nding out about the attack it made sense to make all of the available
imagery over pixelated to emphasise it. Orange is used throughout the design, as
this is a signicant colour of importance to Sikhs.

Operation Bluestar took place in Punjab , India, in June 1984. It was a control led attack
authorised by the government, which saw the deaths of thousands of innocent people.
The attack took place with a media blackout, which disguised the attack from the rest
of the world.
The aim by the government was to capture an alleged terrorist Jarnail Singh
Bhindranwale who had taken refuge at the Golden Temple which is considered to
be one of the holiest shrines f or Sikhs. There has never been any val id proof that
Bhindranwale was a terrorist or that he had committed any unlawful crimes that
should see him arrested.
The government saw Bhindranwale as a threat due to the rapid growth of followers
who shared Bhindranwales vision of a separate state of land known as Khalistan,
which would be a separate state for the Sikh s that they could call their own. Under the
command of Indira Ghandi, who was the prime minister of India, the Indian Army chose
to surround the Golden Temple from the 2nd of Jun e before choosing the 5th of June
as the day of planned attack.
The aftermath of the attack involved the assassination of Indias prime minister in
November 1984, which sparked anti-Sikh riots across Delhi when the news made the
headlines. These riots were directly linked to Operation Bluestar and highlighted how
the government had so much control over what was reported in the media at the time.
The riots again saw the deaths of thousands of innocent Sikhs. To this day people h ave
been fighting for justice, for those they lost in the attack and those who today are still
being affected by the aftermath of the attack.

Professor Devinderpal Singh Bhullar has been on Death Row in India since 1995, following an unlawful deportation
from Germany where he had sought asylum after the murder of his father and brother by Indian state officials. Bhullar
was arrested, denied access to a lawyer and subsequently tortured and coerced into signing a confession.
During the trial which was inconsistent with international legal principals of for trail all eyewitness corroborated
Bhullars testimony. Subsequently, a Supreme Court judge found Bhullar not guilty, citing insufficient evidence for
conviction. In spite of this, the Indian state has kept Bhullar behind bars for the past 18 years, mostly in solitary
confinement. Suffering from mental illness, he remains under imminent threat from execution.
