Objective

Designing a pilot program to implement and evaluate pharmacy students’ patient

counseling/education skills for diabetes and asthma diseases as models.


Method

2 Days workshop (Educational Institute)

•an interactive patient counseling session.• Asthma / Diabetes education sessions

pre- and post workshop knowledge questionnaire scores were 66.4±16.8 and 82.5±10 respectively, and the difference was(16%) statistically significant (p <0.05).

Conclusion The workshop successfully enhanced the

knowledge and communication skills of the students and increased patients’ satisfaction.

Inclusion of students’ self-assessment and patient evaluation should be encouraged in pharmacy educational programs.


Limitations Low Students’ commitment to workshop

attendance and training. Number of patients in real practice was lower

than that expected during the planned time frame.

Patients’ educational level and low previously received education.


Future Recommendations

Implementation of this pilot program in conventional education including establishment of evaluating rubrics.
