    Discipleship has

    a purpose - to

    make

    us

into new persons. God has created us with

    a capacity to

    be

    like

    Him. There are various

examples of what God had in mind. The

walk of faith may be seen in t he example

    of

    Abraham.

    The

    making

    of a leader Is

    seen in Moses, and

    what

    real

    beauty

    is

    displayed in

    Esther.

    It was not until

    Jesus

    c ame tha t we

    were

    ab le

    to se e how

    s e r i ous

    God

    was. He

    points the

    way

    toward

    a

    total

    reworking of

    human life.

The Bible states if any man is in Christ,

he is a new creature, the old things

    have

passed away; behold newness has come.

    2

    Cor.

    5:17

    Paul

    says

    of

    our bapti sm

    we

    are

    raised to

    walk

    in

    newness

    of

    l ife

    Again, he urges

    us to be t ransformed

    by

    the renewing of

    our

    mind. Many

    more

    passages

    of

    scripture could be

    added

    which talk about

    this

    new life, this

    transformation, this way of discipleship.

    However, these will suffice.

    It should

    be noted

    that in 2

    Cor 5:17,

    Paul

    Is not trying to

    explain

    this

    new

    crea

    tion.

    He is not urging

    us

    to become new

    creatures, nor

    what we

    may become, nor to

    put

    aside

    the old

    and work

    ourselves

toward the new. He Is merely proclaiming

wha t h as happened to us

    In Christ Earlier

    he

    said we

    all,

    with

    unveiled face

    beholding as

    in a

    mirror the glory

    of

    the

    Lord, are being t ransformed

    into the same

    image from

    glory

    to

    glory... God

    is deter

    mined to

    make u s

    l ike him This

    will

    affect

    who we

    are,

    what we believe,

    how

    think, and what we do.

    There

    Is much

    talk

    about being b

    again. What

    is

    overlooked

    is

    the

    ide

    transformation

    which

    is

    part of

    it.

    C

    cerning

    this,

    C.S.

    Lewis

    writes

    it

    is

    n

    change

    from

    bra iny men to

    bralner

    me

    is a

    change that goes of f

    in a

    totally

    feren t d irection

    -- a

    change

    from

    b

    creatures

    of

    God

    to being sons of G

    This may

    be

    Illustrated with a jump

    horse. One could teach a

    horse to

    j

    bet ter

    and

better . This would no t

    transforming

    the horse,

    however.

    Bu

    one

    cou ld

    take

    th i s

horse and m ak e him

    to

    a

    winged

    creature, this

    would

    t r ans fo rma t ion

    Transformation is

    not

    just

    improvem

For Chr is tians , it is

    christlikeness.

    always get more than

    we bargain.

    Chris t, we

    find

    forgiveness. God wan t

    make

    us

    forgiving In

    Christ, we

peace. God sends us into the t umult .

    gain confidence

    in Christ.

    God comma

    us to be servants.

    He

    keeps pushing us

    ther

    than

we want to go -- all the wa

    Christ likeness. There

    is

    no middle grou

    It is christlike or

    nothing

    It is for

reason that many are surprised a t

    things we do e.g., 1 Peter 4:3-4 . Our l

    are

not patterned by the things of

    world

    bu t

    by

    Christ.

    God Is conforming

    to

    the image

    of His

    son. The

    old

    thi

    have passed

    away,

    behold,

    newness

    come .

People who attended th e 1966 Mid-Wlnter Rally at

    Balingen, South of Stuttgart.

    MiD-WINTER

    RALLY

Just a fte r Chri stmas , ove r 100 Chris tians from

    around

    Europe

    gathered outside

    of Balingen,

    West

    Germany for a three-day rally.

    Based

    on th e

    books

    of

    Peter, the

    theme

    was Challenging Discipleship. Fif

    teen

    attended from

    the

    Landstuhl congregation. It

    was

    a

    good

    time of fellowship and

    teaching.

One of the most intriguing parts of the program for

    myself

    was

    a class on

    th e use

    of computers in a local

    congregation. There were several ideas

    given

    on how

    computers

    could

    be used

    within

    a

    congregation

    as

well as a tool for evangelism.

    Some

    of

    the

    simple

    ideas dealt

    with d ri ll s

    and

    practice,

    tutorials, and

    simiiations life of Paul,

    dynamics

    of

    the

    church) . I

    have taken

    some

    of

    these

    ideas

    and

    am

    beginning

    to

    develop them

    with

my computer. Some of th is means

    that

    I have

    to

learn programming. I am looking for a

    way to

    use the

    computer

    in

    conjunction

    with a

    youth

group (perhaps have a one-week computer instruc

    tion camp,

    something

    to get them interested).

    However,

    there

ar e a couple of items which I could

    use.

    First, if you have

    any ideas about

    how I could

develop this, i would be glad to hear from you. Se

    cond,

    if you know of any

    public domain software

    whch could be used

    along

    these

    lines,

    please send it.

I will be willing to pay for

    the

mater ia l. Last, if you

    know of any

    commericai

    material which

    could be us

ed , write and let me

    know

about It. I have an Atari

    1040ST machine Thanks

    Also,

at this rally, I was elected to chair th e rally

    committee

    for

    th e

nex t year . We will be having a

    meeting

in May with another to follow in

    th e

    Fall. It

    should

    be

    an exci ting

    time.

    ANNOUNCEMENT

    As I

    to

    having this

    nouncement put

    on

    AFN

    no t allow

    us

to put up pos te rs ). It is aired as

    the

    tion has time available

    and

are willing to do it. I

    h

    heard

    it

    several

    t imes and

    others

    tell me

    they

    NEW ACTIVITIES

    We

    have

    begun

    some

    new activit ies

    here

    at

    L

    stuhl.

    With an

    eye toward

    growth and

    evangelism

    invite a visitor to

    dinner program was

    initiated.

    simply

    means that

    different

    families

    will

    take

    responsibility

    to invite a visitor

    over

    to the ir home

    a

    meal (ei ther

    on a Sunday o r

    during

    th e

    week).

    will allow each of us

    to be

    better acquainted.

    We have

    also

    begun (although it

    was

    really sta

    during

    my furlough) a get

    acquainted time betw

    Sunday Schoo l

    and

    Church services. It

    has

    b

    working ou t

    well

    as

    different

    people are respons

    for hospitali ty,

    greeting, and

    clean-up. It is a

    g

    time fo r all to

    sit

    and talk and relax

    and

    enjoy

    e

    othe r

    Finally, we have

    also

    begun a

    calling

    progra

    was calling up people

    and

a sk ing wha t a re you

    ing? When they

    said

    nothing,

    i told

    them

    I woul

    by in 15

    minutes and

    we would go

    calling. Now,

    ple are giving

    one

    night a week

    to go

    calling.

    W

    this

    means, however,

    is

    that

    I

    take one on one n

    and

ano ther on ano ther night, it is like a small t

    ing period until they are

    able

    to

    take another.

    So f

    has

    been working

    well.

    ASCENSION AND CORONATION OF THE

    David, by the Spirit, says,

    The

    Now,

    angels, authorities,

    principalities and

    powers

    are subjected to him.

The Holy Spirit sent down by Jesus

    from

heaven, on Pen tecos t after his resurrection,

    to the disciples

    in attendance in

    informs

    Peter,

    filled with that

    The first act of his

    reign was to bes tow

    the

    Holy Spirit, according

    to the

    prophecy of

    Joel and

    his

    own promise. So soon

    as

    he

    received the kingdom from

    God

    his father, he

    poured out the

    blessings

    of his favor upon his

friends; he fulfilled all hi s

    promises

    to the

    apostles , and

    forgave

    three thousand

    of his

f ie rces t enemies. He

    received

    pardons and

    gifts for

    them

    abundantly

    all

    spiritual

    gifts on the little flock

    CHRISTIAN HOPE

    N

    Peter,

    by

    the Spirit,

    says,

    Blessed be the

God a nd F ath er

    of

    our

    Lord

    Jesus

    Christ , who

    according to

    His

    great

    mercy has caused

    us to

be born aga in to a l iv ing hope through the

    resur

    rection

    of

    J e s u s

    Chris t from

    th e d ea d.

    John

    testifies

    Dear

    friends,

    now

    we are

    children

    of

    God,

    and

    what we

    will

    be has not yet

    been

    made

known. But we know that when he appears, we

sh all b e like him , for we

    shall see

    him as he

    is .

    Everyone who has

    this hope in

    him purifies

    himself,

    just

    as

he is pure. Paul expresses hi s

hope when he says I conside r tha t our

    present

    suf fe rings a re

    not worth

    comparing

    with th e

    glory

    that

    will

    be

    revealed

    in

    us.

    The whole

    hope of the

    Christian

    may be summed

    up

    in one

    sentence: Now

    if

    we are

    children, then

    we

    are

    hei rs hei rs

    of G od

and co he i rs with Christ .

    Eternal

    Life,

    th e riches

    of Christ,

    th e

    glory,

    honor, wealth and

    joy

    of God's

    only

    begotten

    Son

    are enjoyed

    equally with

    all

    the saints.

    Hope differs from fai th.

    It

    looks only forward

    to

    future events

    and

    objects.

    It

    does not look

back or at present circumstances. Paul says

    Hope

that is seen is no hope

    at

    all. Who

    hopes

    for what he already

    has?

    It

    desires

    and

    expects

    good

    and

    nothing else. There is

    not

    one dark

    cloud,

    not

    one

    dark

    speck

    in all

    the

    heavens

    of

Christian hope. Every thing seen in i ts realm is

    bright, cheering,

alive and transporting. It is all

desirable and desired. It is all

    earnest expecta

    tion and a

    confident expectat ion

    of

    things

    hoped

    for.

    There

    are various

    degrees

    of hope;

    bu t

    in

    the

    least degree of

    it

    there

    is

    desi re combined with

    expectation. Things expected are

    not

    always

desirable, no r are th ings

    desirable

    always

    expected;

    but

    hope

    embraces

    promises t h

    For

    it is

    based

on the promises of God (n

    or even probabili ty it

    As

    we grow

    in our

    by

    God).

    As

    we

    in

    our knowled

God 's character , of the ful ness and

    MID-WINTER

    RALLY

    This year's

    Mid-Winter

    Rally

    was an excel lent

    time

    of

    fellowship, worship and teaching. The

    theme

    of

    this

    year's rally

    was

    Let every

    tongue

    confess Jesus

    I

    greatly enjoyed the preaching

    and teaching. Following the theme,

    sermons

    were

    given concerning confessing Jesus

    as

    Creator, Lord, Risen for

    our

    sakes,

    and as

    com

ing King It was a time of encouragement.

    Thi s year, we extended

    th e

    rally

    one

    day in

    o rde r tha t w e cou ld have a smal l forum. The

    morning

    session dealt

    with th e

    principlesof

    the

    concerned

    itself

    with

    how

    we

    put

    these

    prin

ciples into application the different ar i n

    which we live This

    sharing

    of views

    was well

received, and people expressed a desire to

    keep

    this in

    the program

    for next year.

    Raymond

    Bodley and

    I

    are looking into

    a new

    location

    which

    may have

    some

    better

    facilities

    with which

    to operate.

    I am already looking for

    ward to the next rally.
