The Star-Spangled BannerOh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
America, the BeautifulO beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
JMU Alma MaterMadison, James Madison, we’ll be forever true.
Our loyalty will always be to JMU.
While friends remain within our hearts and knowledge guides our way,
James Madison will lead us on to conquer each new day.

2015 OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTORS
the student speaker is an honor bestowed to a fellow senior through an application and audition process, run by the Student Government Association. Rosemary Girard is graduating summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, as a JMU Honors student and as the Advocacy Studies Outstanding Student of the Year with a double major in Communication Studies and Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication. In her time at JMU, she served as an intern in JMU’s Office of Communications and Marketing, worked in media relations on the fringes of Capitol Hill, and spent two summers interning at the Library of Congress. Some of her favorite JMU memories include her role as a Student Ambassador as well as a First Year Orientation Guide. In the fall, she will begin a master’s degree in Public Relations and Corporate Communications at Georgetown University.
the class oF 2015 valedictorian meets the criteria for class valedictorian with the highest grade point average in his class, 100 or more hours of coursework at James Madison University, and an average of 14 hours earned each regular semester of attendance. Anthony Poehailos is a music education major from Charlottesville, Va., and a member of the clarinet studio of Dr. Janice Minor. Anthony has also been a Clarinet Section Leader in the Marching Royal Dukes for the past three years and is a brother of

After graduation, Anthony will be attending graduate school at The Pennsylvania State University to pursue a Master’s of Music degree in Clarinet Performance, and serve as a Graduate Assistant for the clarinet studio. Following that, he plans on teaching music at the high school or collegiate level and continuing to perform as much as possible.
Faculty speaker Every year the senior class nominates faculty members who have made a significant contribution to their Madison experience. The selected professor is given the honor to share their last words of wisdom and inspiration to the graduating class and encourage the graduates to “be the change.”
Dr. Lori Britt has experience as a newspaper reporter and in directing communication and public relations efforts for non-profit and trade organizations. She teaches organizational communication courses and along with her students designs and facilitates opportunities for the public to discuss and address challenging issues. This year she received the Goodman Award recognizing her integration of teaching and scholarship to benefit the student learning process.
COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
JMu aluMna lindsay czarniak (’00) is one of the most recognizable faces in sports broadcasting. An anchor on the 6 p.m. weekday ESPN SportsCenter, Czarniak helps inform the nation on the day’s top sports storylines, night in and night out.
But the Centreville, Va. native got her start in JMU’s School of Media Arts & Design, where she picked up her love of broadcast journalism.
Czarniak joined ESPN in August 2011 as a SportsCenter anchor, also hosting SportsNation and NASCAR Now. In January 2015 she became solo anchor of the 6 p.m. ET SportsCenter, having joined John Anderson as co-host of the program in 2012.
Prior to joining ESPN, Czarniak served as sports anchor and reporter at WRC-TV (NBC4) in Washington, D.C. anchoring daily sportscasts, reporting from major live events and hosting Sports Final, Redskins Report and the Coach’s Show with Mike Shanahan. During her time in DC, she was a protégé of WRC’s longtime sports anchor, the late George Michael, the primary sports anchor at WRC from 1980 to 2007. Michael called Czarniak “the best hire I’ve ever made.”
At NBC4, Czarniak covered all of the region’s professional teams and hosted and produced the sports-interview segment Lunch With Lindsay where she interviewed nationally known athletes, politicians and entertainers about topical issues, on and off the field. She also worked for the station’s parent network, NBC, reporting from the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy, and the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. She also served as a pit reporter and host for NBC Sports’ NASCAR coverage and sideline reporter for the networks’ Heads-Up Poker challenge.
While at NBC in Washington, D.C., she also worked for Turner Sports, taking over as pre-race studio host for their NASCAR Sprint Cup series coverage of the network’s six summer races after years as a pit reporter/feature reporter.
Prior to joining NBC4, Czarniak served as an intern for WUSA in Washington, D.C. while still a college student before moving to CNN as a production assistant. Her first on-air role as a news reporter was for WAWS/WTEV-TV in Jacksonville, Fla., before working in Miami at WTVJ and the Speed Channel.
Born in Harrisburg, Penn., Czarniak was raised in northern Virginia in a sports atmosphere, with her father working as a sports reporter and editor for USA Today. She played lacrosse and field hockey in high school, and graduated from James Madison University in 2000 with a major in journalism and a minor in studio art.
