Clapham South has all the advantages of

being so close to the wide green spaces of the

common, but is most definitely at the quieter

end of town, with families continuing to settle

down here as a result. It is, in fact, the heart

of suburban Clapham, with row upon row of

residential back streets disguised by genteel

high streets with independent boutiques, with

    not a chain in sight.

Balham Hill might be the gateway to

the area, with its Northern line tube and

other general amenities, but exit towards

the common and laid-back bars with great

    gardens make for perfect summertime

drinking dens. The residential streets behind

are typified by red-brick Victorian and

Edwardian terraces turned into duplexes or

    retained as chunky family homes.

Follow the maze of streets to nearby

Abbeville Road, where the Douglas and

Gordon offices are located, and the areas

rumoured village atmosphere is brought to

the fore. An independent vets practice sits

alongside locally-run DIY stores, the excellent

Fromagerie cheese shop and firm favourite

The Abbeville, which serves up refined,

modern European food (try the fresh tortelloni

with gorgonzola and walnut or braised squid

    with chipotle sauce).

Towards the other end of Abbeville Road

is Clapham Common tube, where Carmen

Bar De Tapas has been cooking up authentic

Spanish cuisine since the nineties. There are

also plenty of cafs and bars in the Clapham

Old Town district. Between the streets of

beautiful, tall, bay-fronted red-brick homes are

dotted several primary schools, which have

received great ratings in recent years.

    WELCOME TO

Fulham SW6This south-west London district has a real sense

of community. It appears to have stockpiled pretty

Victorian terraces in preparation for the mass exodus

of City folk wanting a little peace and quiet, but there

are also plenty of choices for a Friday night out.

You will find options aplenty along the Fulham

Road, with the Penny Black Restaurant serving refined

English fare, and The Goat, newly refurbished as a

New York-style pizzeria and cocktail bar.

For shopping, while away a quiet afternoon in

independent bookstore Daunt Books, or purchase

beautiful bespoke undergarments from Night Owls

Lingerie. Further west towards Parsons Green, youll

find independent boutiques such as the pink-fronted

Indian Summer, which stocks original furnishings, fabrics and accessories from the land of silk and

    vibrant colour.

A little further down Fulham Road youll find Emma

Bridgewaters cute Pottery Caf, as well as the

award-winning Parsons Nose a very special local

butcher, which prides itself on sourcing the greatest

British meat and poultry, and always offers friendly

advice. Down past Parsons Green underground andacross the green to the New Kings Road youll find

local favourites such as Emilias Deli, serving up tasty

home-cooked Italian delicacies and piled high with

    every Mediterranean treat imaginable.

If an afternoon on the terraces is more your

thing than shopping or lunching, then there are

two Premiership football clubs located in Fulham

Chelsea and Fulham FC. Both clubs inspire a lifetimes

devotion from their fans; the atmosphere on match

days is electric but there are plenty of retreats should

you wish to avoid the mania.

Buyers will find a plethora of generously sized

garden flats and duplexes, while the tree-lined

avenues of period terraces still provide great familyhomes, many with modern extensions. Green

space also abounds and the area has a selection of

parks Bishops Park, Fulham Palace Gardens and

Hurlingham Park all boast peaceful riverside settings.

Kensington and the Kings Road are a short bus

ride away and the District Line provides handy

    access to the city.

    INTRODUCING

    lorrunto Voluptibus, Director Sales,

    [email protected]

If it wasnt for the riverside Dove pub, where ErnestHemingway and Graham Greene once mulled over life

and literature with a beer or two, you might never know

that Hammersmith was once a quaint village.

Now a bustling metropolis and cultural centre in its

own right, the Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush area

has defined itself by its theatres and music venues.

Off the high street, Riverside Studios the former BBC

headquarters is today a venue for eclectic dance

acts and groundbreaking theatre, while The Lyric has

been lauded for both its Shakespearean productions,

support of emerging playwrights and actors, and great

schemes for aspiring youngsters. It also boasts a great

rooftop garden, fab pizzas, and ticket prices that are

never extortionate. The beautiful garden square of StPeters was once home to Island Records, and none

other than Bob Marley recorded his Exodussessions

at the companys Hammersmith Studio proving its

not just neighbouring Notting Hill that takes all the

    plaudits for Londons musical history.

Buyers will find residential pockets of bay-fronted

terraces and a scattering of secluded Georgian

squares. Huge potential can be found in the ShepherdsBush area for those seeking more for their money.

Prices creep ever upwards but family homes are still

more attainable than in the neighbouring boroughs.

Whilst this vibrant shopping district might have the

high-end sewn up with Westfield shopping centre,

local character can still be found at Shepherds Bush

and Goldhawk markets, famous for incredible fabrics

and where international cuisine is on offer each week.

Just over the West Cross Route, a former factory has

been transformed into the Louise Blouin Foundation,

a place where art and culture collide through special

    events and international exhibits.

For real community spirit, shoppers should head to

Brackenbury Village, where local gems like StentonFamily Butchers or Brackenburys Deli are around the

corner from pretty white-fenced terraces; all a short

walk from the open space of Ravenscourt Park and

great Thames vistas from the embankment. There are

a couple of superb riverside pubs near the elegant

Hammersmith Bridge the perfect stop-offs to sit,

contemplate and just watch life go past.

    [email protected]

    WELCOME TO

KensingtonW8With its antique shops and chic cafs,

Kensington manages to have a little of the artistic

temperament of neighbouring Notting Hill, but with

a lot less of the bustle that goes hand-in-hand with

such a reputation. Here, it is all about exclusive jet-set

living in a refined English setting. If the intensity of

shopping on Oxford Street confounds you, Kensington

High Street offers a calmer experience and has all of

    the staples.

Take a turn off the high street, with its mix of

boutiques and bars, and you will find yourself

amongst staggering white Georgian stucco houses

and private garden squares. Theres not a whisper in

the air giving certain enclaves of this busy London

corner an exclusive yet neighbourly feel. This mightbe why the worlds ambassadors decided to move

in here so long ago, occupying some of the grandest

    abodes near Kensington Gardens.

Kensington still manages to retain something of

the familial atmosphere which JM Barrie wrote about

(its a wonder Peter Pan ever left), and plenty of

writers before and since have taken inspiration from

just outside their doors. James Joyce, Henry James,Agatha Christie and Ezra Pound all called the

    neighbourhood home at one point.

A very English setting it may be, a stones throw

from the majestic Royal Albert Hall, the Orangery

of Kensington Palace (a nice spot for afternoon tea)

and the white-fronted, palatial residences of Palace

Gardens. However, were still in London and there are

plenty of great finds from further afield, such as local

favourite Ranoush Juice, serving up hearty Lebanese

fare, or the excellent Yashin Sushi on Argyll Road.

Its also where Yotam Ottolenghi set up one of his

first cafs on tiny Holland Street. And, of course, there

are a number of smart-yet-intimate pubs dotted

about. Just off the beaten track sits local favourite, TheAbingdon, a very popular Friday night and Sunday

lunch spot serving elegant food and jazzy cocktails to

    a smart crowd.

Head west to the white stucco villas of Holland

Park and get lost in the walled gardens and woods

where, every summer, the sounds of the countrys best

voices can be heard at the annual Opera Holland Park.

    INTRODUCING

    lorrunto Voluptibus, Director Sales,

    [email protected]

If the hallowed Natural History, Science, and

Victoria andAlbert museums, the Royal Albert Hall,

and a number of stunning hotels are not enough to

leave you feeling in awe at the sheer grandeur of this

well-heeled postcode, then perhaps knowing that

Winston Churchill lived and died at 28 Hyde Park Gate

    will impress.

The white villas and mansion blocks that line the

wide, leafy avenues can distract even the most serious

shopper from whats on offer here.

Away from the Brompton Road, with its patisseries

and restaurants which are great for a leisurely

weekend brunch and a Bloody Mary or two Walton

Street and Beauchamp Place provide a welcome

respite from the shopping mecca of nearbyKnightsbridge. Here, you will find rows of interiors

stores from A-Z (Andrew Martin to Xobo, to be exact)

that can give those along the New Kings Road a run

for their money. Designer childrenswear from Marie

Chantal and bespoke nursery furniture stores stand

between smart cocktail bars a restorative necessity

after a hard days shopping. At the South Kensington

end of the Fulham Road, drop in at the beautifully

decorated Bibendum restaurant and oyster bar for a

glass of bubbly and nibbles, or for a celebratory meal.

For rustic elegance, seasonal specialities and organic

wine, visit Bumpkin on Old Brompton Road, which is

not too far from the new Douglas & Gordon office on

    Harrington Road.

    Hamilton & Inches, a specialist Edinburgh-based

jeweller, has its London boutique on Beauchamp

Place, stocking fine Scottish silver as well as coveted

international brands such as Brazilian line H.Stern.

Besides the draw of the typically elegant Kensington

boutiques, the borough is home to some of the citys

most prestigious primary and secondary schools,

including the independent Lyce Franais Charles deGaulle, founded in 1915 and repeatedly rated one of

the finest centres of education in the country.

Prime real estate here flies off the books, but a

pied--terre above a caf is worth the wait. Buyers with

serious money to spend can find rare treasures such

as the Georgian duplexes with huge, hidden terraces

overlooking private gardens a real find in the capital.
