Congratulations to Ms. Walter, our Grade 3/4 teacher, who is retiring at the end of June. Ms. Walter has been teaching for 33 years and has been with Rogers P.S. for 21 years. Students and staff have been very fortunate to work with such a caring teacher. We will greatly miss her and her infectious laughter but wish her all the best in her retirement. Welcome back to Ms. Best who is returning in September to teach our gifted Grade 7/8 class. We would also like to welcome Ms. Dawson who will be teaching French. Congratulations to Ms. Merali who will be joining our staff as a contract teacher. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our community members for their support this past year and I look forward to another great year in 2014-2015. Have a terrific summer! Message from Administration:

It is difficult to believe that the school year has come and gone so quickly. All in all it has been a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with such a supportive community, staff and student body for another amazing year.

Please note that our Meet the Teacher/Curriculum Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 25th.

On page two of the newsletter is a tentative class organization for the upcoming school year. Please note that this is a tentative list and assignments may change over the course of the summer.

Over the next week we are encouraging all of our students to begin to clear out their lockers, desks etc. We want to make sure that we leave our building just as neat and tidy in June as we found it in September. Our older students are reminded to save their locks for next year as all lockers must have a lock.

Our fantastic yearbooks will be distributed next week. Our Yearbook Mom, Mrs. Stammers has put together an outstanding year-end edition. This year’s Rogers Pride 13/14 is filled with photos and colourful pages that bring back such great memories. Thanks again Liza!

school and students will be dismissed at 11:15 a.m. Children, including Grade 8’s, are required to attend school .

Tentative Class Organization for 2014-2015 We are currently in the process of organizing classes based on the allo-cated staff from the Board. We will have two Kindergarten programmes running next year and continue with our Gifted program for grade 4-8. We are also in the process of establishing a timetable for the school. Congratulations!

Please join us in congratulating our Grade one teacher, Ms. Cousineau for being named Teacher of the Year! Ms. Cousineau will be presented with this prestigious award at a dinner this month. Congratulations to our caretaker, Mr. Allen for being given an award of Excellence!

Summer Heat With such a warm June and the Farmers Almanac calling for another hot summer with a great deal of rain we have included some web resources that our community may find helpful over the summer months. There will also be a link on our Board website to information about summer safety from a variety of sources. Here are the links below: Beat the heat (City of Toronto): http://www.toronto.ca/ems/safety_tips/hot_1.htm Sun safety (York Region Health Services): http://www.region.york.on.ca/Services/Public+Health+and+Safety/Healthy+Schools/School+Health+Services+Manual+2004-2005.htm Sun safety (Canadian Cancer Society): http://www.cancer.ca/ccs/internet/standard/0,2939,3172_13247__langId-en,00.html Sun sense guidelines (Canadian Dermatology Association): http://www.dermatology.ca/english/sun/SAW2005/sunsense_e.html

First Day of School Routines Here are some simple instructions to assist us with organizing classes on September 4th. All students will meet on the back tarmac to begin. Students in grades 1-3 will meet at the doors closest to the playground. Students in grades 4 and 5 will meet at the southeast doors and our 6,7 and 8’s will gather at the intermediate doors at the southwest side of the building. Students in a cross divisional split grade will also be sorted at this time. Teachers will have signs indicating their name and grade level and non-homeroom teachers will have class lists to assist with the place-ments. Students whose names do not appear on any of the lists will report to the main office. We hope that these instructions will assist all of our families when they arrive on the first day.

BUS INFORMATION

Board Policy states that the walking distance for students from JK to grade 3 is 1.2 km and for students from grade 4 - 8 is 1.6 km. Students who live within our boundaries but beyond the distances stated above are eligible for bus transportation as long as they adhere to safety and behaviour rules. As well, students MUST ride the bus to which they have been assigned. They must also get on and off the bus at their assigned stop. Students will not be allowed to switch buses or to take friends home on the bus unless their parent/guardian sends a written request to the school for that particular day. If there is room on the bus, the office will sign the note and the driver will allow the student on their bus. Please keep the Board website, www.schoolbuscity.com handy to check route updates for your child. This information is particularly important in August since the Board no longer sends information by mail informing parents of bus times and location. Each year, your child’s bus number and route may change as students move in and out of the area. Once set for the year, (usually by mid-September) the school will advise you of any changes to your child’s route.

Tips for Encouraging Summer Learning

Every June, students look forward to getting rid of their books and heading off to enjoy two months of carefree liv-ing. But studies have indicated that continuous learning over the summer months assists students in getting a better start for the next school year. How can you encourage students - and parents - to keep learning alive all summer while still letting them enjoy some free time? Here are some tips you can share with students to encourage learning through-out the summer:

Math:

-> Institute an allowance to help children with their math. Let them keep track of how much they receive each week, how much they save and how much they spend. Open a bank account so they can watch their savings grow. -> Hold a yard sale or set up a lemonade stand. Let children set the prices and make change. -> Teach older students how to put together a budget. Let them keep track of revenues and expenses each week. Teach them how to tally and reconcile their accounts each month. -> Teach children how to compute gas mileage on a car trip. -> Purchase logic puzzle or crossword puzzle books. -> Buy jigsaw puzzles and complete them with your child. Older children can work on more challenging ones. -> If you have sports fans in your house, encourage them to collect information on player statistics and read about game results in the paper each day. -> Take advantage of car vacations to teach children about maps, directions and distances. Take a map along, and have your child plot a course for the trip and follow along in the car as you go.

Social Studies:

-> If you’ll be visiting another city while on vacation, pick up brochures about the city and learn about the history and culture of different places. Visit historical sites along the way and stop at museums and galleries that display the area’s culture.

-> Find opportunities to visit local zoos, science centers, museums and art galleries.

Writing:

-> To keep writing skills current, buy a notebook and have children record daily activities and thoughts during their vacation. Ask them to reflect on specific events that happened during the day. -> Encourage children to write to grandparents, relatives and pen pals weekly.

Reading:

-> Find out if your neighbourhood library offers summer programs. Visit once a week to sign out new books. -> As a family, pick a topic to follow for a few days. Learn as much as you can about the topic through television, internet, newspapers, and magazines. -> Encourage teens to hook up with a younger sibling, a neighbour or a family friend to help them read once a week -> Assign children the task of writing a grocery list each week and take them with you to the grocery store. Make them find the items on the list by reading the signs in the aisles and the labels on products. -> Set aside 20 minutes every day for family reading (including parents) -> For younger children, practice the sounds of language by reading rhyming books. Teach your children rhymes, short poems and songs. -> When walking around the neighbourhood, have children read signs and notices. -> Re-read familiar books. Children need practice in reading comfortably and with expression using books they know. -> Buy your teen a new book, or encourage library trips and book swaps with friends.

-> Order a monthly magazine or pick current ones up at the library.

Summer Jobs:

-> Teens can help in the community and learn responsibility and social values by volunteering locally (at the hospital, animal shelter, community centre, summer camp, daycare, nursing home, church). These are also great experiences to put on a resume. -> Teens learn responsibility, budgeting and accountability in summer jobs, either working for themselves or for some-one else. Some ideas for a summer business include yard work for neighbours (gardening, trimming shrubs and mow-ing lawns), babysitting or car washing. -> Teens can be house sitters, taking care of pets while neighbours are on vacation, collecting the mail and news-papers and watering plants.
