PIV Drives is part of the Brevini Power TransmissionGroup. which has a large range of Helical and BevelHelical gearboxes. PIV Drives, which joined the groupin 2002, is the oldest company in the group, havingbeen founded in 1928.

Manufactured in Germany, PIVgearboxes utilise leading edge gearproduction technology, takingadvantage of standardi-sation of parts andmodularity, to achieve shortdelivery times.

One Brevini solution: a coal industry experience

A 2,100 MW power station located at the coal mine site inthe Latrobe Valley in Victoria required an old structureretrofitted, with work done to a tight deadline.

Situtated on a travelling stacker were two dual driveconveyors which had been in use since 1987, conveying coal from the mine to the powerstation. The drive units needed to be replaced without any modification to the existingstructure, while still achieving an increase in power and improvements to the brakes. Thereplacement also needed to occur on a very strict schedule, to coincide with a plannedmaintenance shutdown and thereby prevent any disruption to the operation of the plant.

In addition, the environment was challenging in that it suffered very wet winters,with dry and dusty summers. The units still had to achieve high design life, low noise andreliability in spite of these difficulties.

Scheduling was critical, as there was a very small window in which the plantshutdown could accommodatethe installation of the units. This job was thereforemanaged through Brevini´s specialist Engineering & Contracts Department.

This department utilises the latest methods in project management, andincorporates the best of Brevini's technical skills, expediting skills, communication anddocumentation procedures. We knew that we had to make sure that the power stationcould proceed with their scheduled shutdown, confident in the delivery and quality ofthe new drives.

Brevini also quoted the entire conveyor package, including the pulleys and bearings.This allowed the customer to easily assess the total cost of various engineering options.

Brevini supplied five Posired two helical gear units (which included one spare), fittedto custom designed base frames. The motor power was increased to 160kw, drum brakeswere replaced with disc brakes and encoders were fitted for accuracy. The resultingdesign delivered a high degree of interchangability with the existing units, and resultedin no modifications being made to the existing structure.


PIVPosiplan is another organisation in the BreviniPower Transmission Group. The company supplies aunique product, which combines planetary andhelical gears. Sizes range from 13 to 28. Nominaloutput torque ranges from 2,100 Nm up to 35,000 Nm.

Extremely reliable, these units are very compact --while achieving similar performance and reliability totraditional helical and bevel-helical gearboxes. Thesmaller dimensions (and weight) gives the useradvantages both in cost and application versatility.

Modular in design, a wide range of ratios is available.The gearbox is mostly shaft mounted, with a range ofthrough type hollow output shafts.

Gears of the helical stage are case-hardedned andprofile ground. The teeth

correction and crowingdesign guaranteeoptimum perfornancesunder load. Efficiency

are over 95% andmore depending onthe number of stages.

Gleason bevel gearsare case hardened andprofile ground or lappedin pairs. With planetarygears, the ring gear is nitrided, the pinon and planetgears are case ardend with profile ground. Theplanetary gears are optimised for maixmumperformance and quiet operation.

Many inputs and couplings are available. Highefficiency seals, with the option of labyrinth seals anddouble seals, with separate grease-filled chamber isalso available.

There is also the choice of a range of accessoriessuch as torque arms, shrink discs, common bedframe, backstops and brakes, as well as auxiliiarydrives, cooling and filtering systems.

Live bottom bin application: our size restriction solution

A live bottom bin is used to transfer large amounts of material that is generally difficult toconvey, and is especially suited for applications where there is a limited working area.They consist of multiple screw feeders arranged in parallel configuration across the floorof the bin; the unit completes two functions by both storing and transferring thematerial.

This applicaiton is in a clean coal technology plant, which required a live bottom bin tobe installed into an extremely dimensionally restricted room. Brevini was required tosupply the motors and gear units to drive 4 parallel screw feeders, in a medium powerapplication, with a medium torque value.

A helical gear unit would have been the traditional selection, due to its thermalproperties, however this style of unit would not fit within the room available. Aplanetary gearbox, while smaller, would not have been able to adequately dissipate theheat.

Brevini used Posiplan gear units to get over the size restrictions. The gear units weresufficiently compact to be arranged side by side, to enable the 4 parallel screw configu-ration required to move the volume of material in the bin. They incorporated a built intorque arm and provided highly suited thermal properties for the application.

This new series of lighter, more compact gear reducers surpass traditional solutions forplanetary and bevel helical gear reducers. They provide higher torque for the sameweight and dimensions. Their design also allows shorter production times and lowerproduction costs, making them the ideal solution for your size restricted applications.

Samhydraulik products are leading edge in theindustry. Fixed and variable pumps and motors withmaximum pressure to 350 bar (continuous) and 450(peak). Transmission pumps range up to 120 cc/rev.Bent axis pumps and motosr areavailable in 12 - 266 cc/rev. andaxial piston pumps up to 90cc/rev.

The range includes axial pistonpumps from 6 cc to 226 cc, withmaximum pressures of up to 480 bar.The pumps are suitable for mobile andindustrial applications through two types: swashplateand bent axis design for open and closed circuitconfigurations.

Samhydraulik also have orbitalproducts: the BGM, BG, BR, HRand HT series. Sizes vary up to500 cc/rev, with varying speedsranging from 975 -1900 rpm.

Maximum pressure is up to210 bar.

One of the latest in thehigh pressure series is theSH6V able to work to 480bar. This swashplate type pump comes with variouscontros and is available in 75 cc and 130 cc.

OT Oiltechnology manufactures external gearpumps, motors and flow dividers. With gear housingfrom extruded aluminium, flanges and covers in castiron, the range can be used on heavy duty machineryand industrial applications with low noiserequirements. There are three product groupsranging from 0.70 to 60 cc/rev, with pressures up to300 bar.

Brevini Australia has designedcustom power packs up to 150kW, complete with ancillaryproducts like filters, electrics,enclosures and base frames.

Our offering in this sector covers traditional V.P.S.Brevini monoblock valves for flow rates of up to 60l/min (up to 5 bank) and maximum pressure of up to400 bar (up to 10 bank) and modular valves for flowrates up to 300 l/min and maximum pressure of up to350 bar. These are available with service portfunctions, gear pumps and motors.

Brevini Hydraulics proportional direction controlvalves are available with inlet flow rates of up to 380l/min and maximum pressures of 400 bar. These areavailable in up to 10 modules. Integrated digitalelectronics and control joysticks with up to fourproportional axes allow for great flexibility intailoring set-up parameters to meet specificrequirements.

BPE Electronics manufacture specially dedicatedproducts and can supply complete customisedsystems, including housings, electric harnesses andsensors.

Another company in the group, Aron manufacturedirectional control valves ranging from cetop 2through to cetop 8.

Hydr-App has had over 30 years ofservice to the hydraulic powerpack market. Hydr-App’sproduct offering ranges fromstandard versions to tailor-made systems. The productscover PTO gearboxes andreduction units, mechanical and electro-mechanicalclutches, bell housing and power units.

All units have hydraulicmotors, either axialpiston or orbital style,totally integrated intothe winch drumtogether with a planetary designreduction unit, housed in thedrum. Line pull capabilities forBrevini Winches are in therange from 0.6 kN to 66 kN.

Pullmaster PlanetaryWinches feature an automaticdisc brake, which has bothstatic and dynamic brake functions. Acounter balance or brake valve is not needed for

smooth and positivecontrol of a deceleratingload.

These winches are availablein four basic types: equalspeed in both directions,rapid reverse, free fall andrecovery winches.

Custom Made Winches provide ourcustomers with unique solutions, designedfor reliability and long service life.

All units feature an innovative designand are made using the highestquality materials. Brevini designengineers provide optimumsolutions for specialisedapplication. Custom made winchescan be equipped withelectric, air, or hydraulicmotors.

Refurbishing a large double drum shaft sink kibble winch

Brevini Australia was requested to provide a solution for a large double drumshaft sink kibble winch. The winch had two drums each powered by 600 kWmotors that could be “clutched- in” together to provide 1200 kW to one drumwith a peak power of 2600 kW.

The motors were back to back with a rear non-drive end shaft extension withand electromagnetic clutch that could combine the power. The winch drumswere running parallel to the motors and the method used to reduce the speedand increase the torque was to employ a single stage spiral bevelreducer providing a right angle arrangement and then driving into a bevel helical reducer also providing a right angle arrangement with both gearreducers mounted onto a base frame, hence the input and output shafts we parallel.

The centre distance between shafts was in excess of 2.7 m between the motor output shaft and the driven winch shaft. So, we not onlyconsidered using a single stage bevel and bevel helical reducer on a base frame but also an “N” series helical reducer with extended centre distance.

The Helical unit could offer a lot of advantages over the old method including having only half of the shafts exposed, no base frame would berequired, alignment would be easier and if we were to use our contactless oil seals they would never have the need to be concerned with oil leaks asin the past.

Brevini PIV Germany were able to design a helical reducer that would not only meet the technical requirements but that also was able toprovide the exact ratio and the required centre distance down to 1 mm. Delivery was also required on a very tight delivery schedule. Note that hemass of each reducer is over 13 tonnes. These are the largest “N” series helical units ever sold in the world.
