2019 Annual Meeting

Mark your calendars for Thursday, April 25th so you won’t miss the

Avenbury Lakes Homeowner’s Association Annual Meeting. The meeting

will take place at Avon High School. The night will start with a reception

at 6 PM, followed by the meeting at 7 PM.

At the meeting, you will elect two (2) resident owners to the Board of

Directors because of the expiring terms of Margo Hirth and

Larry Escalante. The successful candidates will serve three-year terms

ending in April 2022. We will also review the past year’s business and

honor the winners of the annual resident Service Awards. Light refresh-

ments will be provided at the reception. PLEASE remember to wear your

nametags! Due to the meeting, the Lodge will close at 4 PM that

day.

Candidates Day

There will be two opportunities to meet the candidates running for the

board positions prior to the meeting; one at 2PM and one at 7 PM on

Monday, April 15th at the Lodge. Please refer to the insert in the

March Breeze to submit questions for the candidates prior to the meeting.

Submissions are due by Monday, April 1st, to the Information Office.

Service Awards Nominations

Once again, the opportunity presents itself to nominate a resident for the

“Spirit Award” or for the “Volunteer of the Year Award.” The award title is

not important. What is important is that you take this opportunity to

nominate someone whom you feel should get recognized for his/her service

to Avenbury Lakes and who seems to go beyond the norm. The recognition

may be for someone who is an active volunteer or committee member or

someone who is a caring resident who seems to always be there to help

his/her neighbors. Please use the form included in the February Breeze to

submit your recommendations to the Information Office by

Monday, April 1st, the awards will be a surprise and be presented at the

Annual Meeting.

Annual Meeting Planning Committee Volunteers

In order to make this year’s Annual Meeting a success, the Annual

Planning Committee Volunteers have been a tremendous help in

preparing for this meeting. In addition, staff members Deb Bryan, Lenny

Evans, Joi Kime and Rachel Norris are busy behind the scenes printing,

contacting, setting up and making preparations for a grand evening!

Book Club

Pickleball Meeting

The Avenbury Book Club will meet at the Lodge on April 11th at 10:30 AM to discuss the book

A Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner. The shared thread of the story is a scarf sprinkled

with marigolds. With it the author weaves two unspeakable New York tragedies—the

Triangle Shirtwaist Fire and 9/11—into a novel of love and acceptance. The heroines,

Clara and Taryn, live a century apart, but their stories are connected not just by a bright scrap of fabric

but by love lost. The story illustrates how quickly disaster can take away what we hold most dear, and

how ultimately we must move forward with hope.

On May 2nd we will discuss the book Pandemic 1918 by Catherine Arnold.

There will be an organizational meeting for the coming outdoor pickleball season on

Tuesday, April 9th, at 7 PM in the Lodge. All Avenbury pickleball players and any

residents wanting to learn to play are invited to this meeting. Refreshments will be

served and we will decide on the schedule for playing this year. Also there will be

several short videos shown about pickleball. We also would like to agree on dates for a

pickleball clinic sometime in May. We plan to have a professional instructor for the first session and

then some of Avenbury’s experienced players will conduct three more sessions. This clinic is intended for

both new players and those already playing who would like to improve their skill level. If you have questions please contact Jim Lally at 695-0109, Mary Firis at 937-9377, or

The Avenbury Men’s Investment Club has a great recent benefit called Manifest

Investing. It is a tool to analyze all stocks and portfolios. Members can use this for

their own stock portfolios, any single stock, or research for club reports. A tool like this

usually costs over a $100 a year!

If you enjoy talking about the stock market or making money, stop by for a cup of coffee at one of our

get-togethers. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month in the Lodge Library. Hope to see you on

Tuesday, April 2nd at 10 AM.

Men’s Investment Club

Spring is just around the corner, time to clean up all of the debris that has

accumulated on our streets, especially on Shakespeare and Middleton,

over the winter. The Landscape Committee is asking for your help in removing the debris. A spring clean

-up is scheduled for, Tuesday, April 9th, with a rain date of April 11th. Volunteers are needed to help with

this project. Please wear gloves and sturdy shoes. Bags will be provided. There will be street captains to

direct you to the areas in need of clean-up.

We will start at 10 AM. Please sign up in the Activity Book at the Lodge with your email address or

phone number so that you can be notified to whom and where you should report.

Property Clean-Up

The Monday morning Bible Study would like to invite you to join in on the study of the

Book of Luke. As we enter Easter season and Holy Week this month, the richness of the

Story of Luke will be current and exciting. We meet every Monday morning at 10:30 AM to Noon and

Breakfast Forum

Our last movie of 2019 will be The Grand Budapest Hotel on Sunday, April 14th.

Called “Witty, quirky, whimsical, and unique with some cartoonish violence,” this

movie has beautiful settings. It takes place in the 1930’s at a popular European ski

resort. The concierge, Gustave, provides first class service to the extreme, especially to lonely women.

When one of these women is found murdered and Gustave inherits a valuable painting from her, he is

accused of the murder. Wild chases and much zaniness follow. It is rated a “Light R.” Come enjoy a light-hearted movie to end the season and the free popcorn.

Movie starts at 7 PM. Sign up in the Lodge Activity Book or pay at the door. Guests are welcome as long

as room is available. Water is $1.00/bottle or you may bring your own drinks and seat cushions for com-

fort. We will ask you to fill out an evaluation for the season. Thanks to those of you who filled out an

evaluation in March.

Movie Night

Remember, Italian Nite is on Saturday, April 13th at 6 PM. You will enjoy a night of

delicious food and great company! Make sure to pay the $15 per person to secure your

spot. Waitlist people will be contacted when there is a place open for you. Bring your

Join us on Friday, April 12th for BINGO at the Lodge!! Dig out your lucky rabbit’s foot and

gold coins and cash in on all of the fun! The cost is only $1 per person to get in. Doors open

at 6:30 PM with games commencing at 7 PM. A sign-up sheet will be in the Activity Book.

Italian Nite

The topic at this month's Breakfast Forum on Thursday, April 11th, will be

"Brain Health"! Our speaker will be Dr. Charles Farrell who established the

Carolyn L. Farrell Foundation for Brain Health, located in Westlake at

26633 Detroit Rd. The foundation conducts enrichment sessions which include visual art, music, dance/movement, creative

storytelling as well as other activities. Breakfast is at Perkins Restaurant on Chester Rd. in Avon at

9:30 AM. Please sign up in the Activity Book and pay $1 prior to the event. Seating is limited to 48,

there will be a wait list available. If you cannot attend, please cancel your reserved spot so that someone

on the “wait list” can attend. If there is a “wait list”, please do not pay until you are notified that there

were cancellations and that you are able to attend. Any question please call Kermit Peters 937-9918.

The Lodge Office will be closed from Friday, April 19th through Friday, April 26th.

FRIDAY, APRIL 12th. If your article is received after that date, there is no guarantee

that it will go into the May issue. If you need immediate assistance during the time that the Lodge Office is closed, please

Tech Nite

Diners Club

There will be no Diners Club in April due to the Annual Meeting being held on the same

evening. Hope to see everyone on Thursday, May 23rd for our next gathering!

The raised garden plots for 2019 are fully rented. Approximately 4 regular garden plots

are available for this season. Please contact Barry at 937-2261 if you are interested in

renting one for the season. Renewal fees are $25. New gardeners pay a $25 deposit plus $25 for the season. To be paid at the

Info Center. PLEASE NOTE: PAYMENTS FOR THE GARDEN PLOTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED UNTIL

AFTER MAY 1st AT THE INFO CENTER.

Garden Plots

Our last Tech Nite for this school year is Monday, April 15th from 6:30-8 PM. Students

will be heading off for college/summer jobs/sports in June. We hope you've been able to

get your questions answered. If not, stay tuned -- we will resume next school year and

keep the every other month schedule, as usual. We are considering a change in the day

BIG 50/50 Raffle

Just a reminder that the Annual Meeting is on Thursday, April 25th at 6 PM at the

Avon High School. Please plan on attending and don’t forget your NAMETAG!

Annual Meeting Reminder

The Community Fund 50/50 Raffle is Back!!

The Community Fund is sponsoring the big, Big, BIG Raffle again, with the

drawing to be held at the Kentucky Derby Party on May 4th. The winner need

not be present at the event; but what a great time is had at that party! We are aiming for a maximum pot of $595 in winnings; and will begin a second bonus pot if we are fortu-

nate to sell enough tickets. The Community Fund will use the proceeds to enhance the outdoor pool area,

as we look forward to the summer months. Tickets will be on sale most mornings at the Lodge from 8:30 until 10 AM. Also, we will sell them just

before afternoon and evening games, the hour before Bingo on Friday, April 12th and Italian Night on

Saturday, April 13th. We will even sell tickets before the opening of the Kentucky Derby Party. If you

want tickets and still have not been able to purchase them, please call Mary Lou Gross at 937-3302.

Ladies of the Lake

All Avenbury residents welcome! 9 Hole Play:

At Bob-O-Links on Rt. 83, starting Monday, May 6th,

Tee-Time: 9:30 AM. In June Tee -Time goes to 9 AM.

Season goes through September 30th. At the request of Bob-O-Links there

will be no play July 15th. During the season please plan to come at least

30 minutes early to pay, get a cart and sign-in. Fee is $15, just sign up in the

Avenbury Golf League

Avenbury Downs will hold our annual Kentucky Derby

Party on May 4th at 4 PM. Our races will start at 4:20 PM.

All bets are $1 and only the winner collects. We will have

a separate table for the Kentucky Derby betting. At about

5:15 PM we will pause for dinner. The Menu includes

fried and baked chicken, mac & cheese, coleslaw, fruit and derby pie for

desert. Various munchies and punch will be available throughout the

evening. The run for the roses is scheduled to begin about 6:45 PM.

Ladies put on your fancy hats, we have a prize for the best one! The cost is

$7. Any questions, call Mary Sterricker at 937-4065.

Start getting your crafts ready and save the date for our

Spring Craft Fair! It will be held on Sunday, May 5th, from

11 AM-3 PM at the Lodge. All crafters must sign-up in the

Activity Book, and please note your craft.

At this time, there is a limit of one table per crafter.

Kentucky Derby

Who are the Ladies of the Lake? You are! Every woman in

Avenbury Lakes is a member of the Ladies of the Lake - there

are no dues or membership rituals. Activities are planned by a

committee and announced monthly in the Breeze. Activities

include local trips, dining together, and informational meetings.

Please join us for a tour of Lakeview Cemetery and lunch in Little Italy on

Thursday, May 9th, 2019. Transportation is provided by Scarlet

Transportation and the bus will leave the Lodge at 10 AM and return at

3 PM. Cost of $21 includes transportation and a docent-led cemetery tour

with stops at the Wade Chapel and the Garfield Monument (stairs at this

stop). Lunch afterwards will be at Mama Santa’s in Little Italy. Each person

will pay for her own lunch and there will be a 20% gratuity on each check.

Please sign up in the Activity Book – there is a maximum of 24.

All participants are encouraged to check that their Avenbury Lakes Tour

Are you thinking of remodeling or just in need of ideas to re-decorate the

homestead? Join us for the Avenbury Lakes Homes Tour on

Sunday, June 2nd from 1 until 4 PM. Our tour will be 7 homes of varying

floor plans with just a kitchen remodel to a whole house redo. Come see what

your fellow residents have been up to! Cost is $10 per person, with all

proceeds benefiting the Community Fund. Sign up in the Activity Book

before May 22nd. This tour is limited to Avenbury Lakes residents ONLY!

Avenbury Home Tour

Calling all Avenbury residents to join us on Saturday May 18th at 6 PM for our

Spring Neighborhood Social. Please bring an appetizer to share and a beverage of

your choice. Dessert, coffee and ice will be provided. There is a $2 charge upon sign

up. This is a great opportunity for new residents to meet all the fun loving people of

Avenbury. We are looking forward to meeting you!

Landscape News

Change is in the air. For many years the Breeze column “Landscape News” was re-

searched and written by Louise Moritz. She has informed us and educated us about

gardening in this area. Louise is retiring from this assignment. Thank you, Louise,

for all you have contributed to landscaping at Avenbury Lakes. The first official day of Spring is March 20th. It’s not too early to begin looking at your own area for clean

-up and ideas for new or replacement plants if needed. The Landscape Committee has had its first meeting. If you are submitting a request to be reviewed by

the Landscape Committee please have it submitted, by the first of the month in order to be placed on the

agenda for that month’s meeting. The column will now be written by Maurine Mescan and Martha Hunter.

Welcome back, spring! Oh how we’ve missed you here at

Avenbury Lakes! As the weather becomes warmer, it is a

perfect time to take a stroll through the community and

enjoy the new life that the season change has to offer!

You may even get the chance to find out if there’s really a

reward at the end of a rainbow! Thanks to Deb Bryan for

Community Manager Update

- Metal Recycling for Earth Day: Please use the orange insert included in this issue

of the Breeze to identify the metal recyclables you would like our volunteers to

pick up on Friday 4/19/19. All metal for pickup should be placed at your driveway

by 9AM with the orange flyer attached to it. If you would like help moving an item to your

driveway or would like to help pick up material (especially those with trucks), please call the Info

Center by April 17th. - Snow Plow Damage: Please report any damage caused by snow removal equipment to the Info

Center by 4/18/19. If there is damage to the irrigation system discovered once the system has

been turned on, please let us know at that time. - No Prune Agreement: This form should be turned into the Info Center by May 1st, 2019 for those

residents who do NOT want Brightview to weed, trim trees, or trim shrubs in their home owner

beds. Please see the form included in this issue of the Breeze. - Geese: Please do not feed the geese including ground feeding around bird feeders! If you see any

nesting activity, please call the Info Center so that we can limit nests and notify Ohio Geese

Control of their locations. - Annual Meeting 2019: Don’t forget to come out for the Annual Meeting at the Avon High School

on Detroit Road on Thursday, 4/25/19 at 6PM. Bring your name tag. The Avon Police will

patrol Avenbury Lakes that evening since so many of us will be at the High School having a fun

time!!! - Trees: Each year dead and/or diseased trees are removed from the property. The Board then must

decide which trees to replace. Typically, front yard trees are replaced and rear yard trees are not.

However, if you would like to have a tree in the rear yard replaced, the option exists to submit a

request to the Landscape Committee for consideration. The resident would pay for the cost of the

tree and installation, and the HOA would maintain it going forward. - Irrigation and over watering: As we move into the summer months, please be mindful of over-

watering turf areas. This can lead to turf diseases and insect damage. Per Brightview, under

typical conditions irrigation should run for a maximum of 10 minutes 3-4 days per week. This of

course is weather dependent. Residents may also benefit from a Solar Sync module that automati-

cally turns irrigation systems off and on depending on weather and soil conditions. This device

can save substantial amounts of money on your water bill. - Modification Form Reminder: If you are planning on making changes to the exterior of your home

(for example: lights, windows, doors, satellite dishes) or changing your landscaping (removing

more than 3 plants, removing or planting a tree), you must submit a Modification Form to either

the Architectural or the Landscape Committee. They will review your request and give you a fast

answer with best results if they have the request early in the month. The Info Center can answer

questions about the process and we have an Architectural Standards Book available for common

replacement components. - No Solicitation Sticker: If you do not want to be approached by sales people coming to your door,

please contact the City of Avon to receive a No Solicitation sticker for your front door. If a sales

person ignores the sticker once placed on your home, you may call the City Police Department to

report them. - Property Inspections: Please check the Rules and Regs regarding Landscaping in home owner

beds. Some common issues include: vegetable and herb plants placed in areas other than the rear

bed where they are allowed, no more than 3 yard art items in the front and side yards combined,

no more than 10 flower pots in the front and side yards combined, no pots or bird feeders in any

common areas.

Attention residents! We are in need of a PAID Pool

Monitor Sub for the upcoming outdoor pool season.

Duties include: confirming resident pool passes are

current upon check-in, collecting entry fees from guests, daily financial

tracking and reporting, assuring that all rules are being upheld, and

reporting any incidents or accidents during your shift. This will be a fill

-in, AS NEEDED position. Please have the scheduling ability of being

flexible and working weekends and holidays. An application will need

to be filled out and the Board will make the decision of who will fill this
