The son of Invincible Spirit has thus far sired 20 first crop winners and seen his fee increase by £20,000 from £55,000 to £75,000.

A fee of £30,000 has been set for Oasis Dream, of whom Mockridge said: “Three-year-old Polydream progressed from her Group-winning juvenile season with a blistering win in the Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. Two-year-old Pretty Pollyanna also scored at Gr.1 level with victory in the Prix Morny, as well as the Gr.2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes. With five further two-year-old Stakes performers in 2018, there is plenty to look forward to.”

The final stallion on the books is Bated Breath, whose fee remains at £10,000. Mockridge said about the son of Dansili, “His Group-winning daughter Worth Waiting [Gr.3 Prix Minerve] was a winner or second in all of her races before placing fourth in the Prix Vermeille. He has 55 per cent winners to runners, superior to that of any other British-based stallion in the £8,000 to £15,000 price bracket.”

“This precocious, athletic and well-balanced colt is one of the best sons of Acclamation to race, winning the Vintage Stakes that was described by Timeform as ‘arguably the most striking performance by a two-year-old in a Pattern race all year.’

“Expert Eye is a fourth generation Juddmonte homebred, whose pedigree boasts the presence of Champion Two-Year-Old Filly in Europe and dual Classic winner Special Duty and seven-time Gr.1 winner Sightseek. He is by Acclamation, a consistent and prolific source of fast horses and the sire of leading stallion Dark Angel.

“We would like to extend special thanks to Sir Michael Stoute and the teams at Freemason Lodge and Beech Hurst Stables for guiding and developing the career of Expert Eye with such skill.”

Frankel leads the roster, with his fee for 2019 set at £175,000. In 2018 he gained three new Gr.1 winners, Call The Wind in France, Mozu Ascot in Japan and Without Parole in Britain.

Mockridge said: “Frankel continues to rewrite the record books as a sire as well as a racehorse. He reached the landmark total of 20 northern hemisphere Group winners this year faster than any other European stallion in the history of the Pattern.

“He has firmly established himself as one of the leading sires in the northern hemisphere, second only to his sire Galileo by Group winners [24] and black-type winners [33] from his 2014-2016 crops.”

About Kingman, he said: “Champion miler Kingman has made an exceptional start with his first crop, which has produced five Stakes winners to date. Amongst their number is the brilliant Calyx, winner of the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and fellow Group winner Persian King [Gr.3 Autumn Stakes].”

CHEVELEY PARK SET FEES FOR NEXT SEASONCheveley Park Stud is the latest stud to announce fees for the 2019 breeding season and has set new boy Unfortunately, the Gr.1 Prix Morny-winning son of Society Rock, at £7,500.

Also the winner of the Gr.2 Prix Robert Papin last season, the three-year-old took the Gr.3 Renaissance Stakes at Naas on his final start in September.

Managing Director Chris Richardson said: “We are delighted to be standing ‘Rock’s Star’, Unfortunately, a very good-looking son of the much-missed Society Rock who we feel ticks all the boxes for both owner breeders and commercial breeders alike, being a Gr.1 Prix Morny winner in the second-fastest time in half a century.”

Nine stallions are on the roster and the priciest of them is the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club scorer Intello at £20,000. The son of Galileo, whose first crop are three, gained a maiden top-level winner as a sire when Intellogent took the Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat in July. Pivotal (Polar Falcon), the Cheveley Park stalwart, who has had a stellar year as both a sire and broodmare sire and was advertised at £40,000 for 2018, has had his fee set as private, as has Dutch Art (Medicean).

Ulysses (Galileo), who covered his first book of mares this year, will command a fee of £17,500, while Twilight Son (Kyllachy), whose first foals will be offered over the coming weeks, will cover at £8,000. The remaining three stallions are: Garswood (Dutch Art) at £3,500, Lethal Force (Dark Angel) at £4,500 and Mayson (Invincible Spirit) at £6,000.

“I feel our stallion roster for 2019 further strengthens the significant contribution Mr and Mrs Thompson make to the industry and they hope that breeders at all levels will support the great value and opportunities offered by the stallions standing at Cheveley Park Stud,” added Richardson.

BEARSTONE STUD ANNOUNCES 2019 STUD FEESBearstone Stud has also announced stud fees for its two stallions in 2019. New to the stallion ranks will be Washington DC, the Gr.3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes-winning son of Zoffany. A multiple Stakes winner, he was also second in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye and the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes and third in the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup. He will stand at £6,000.

Terry Holdcroft, owner of Bearstone Stud, said: “He is a tough and very classy horse with a devastating turn of foot and was always competitive at the highest level in three countries. There is a tremendous amount of speed on both sides of his pedigree and the feedback we’ve already received from breeders strengthens our belief that he is just the kind of stallion the market wants.

“We’ve pitched his opening fee at a very competitive price and will be making available a small number of breeding rights.”

Fountain Of Youth, the Group-winning son of Oasis Dream and Gr.1 1,000 Guineas winner Attraction, remains at £4,500. “We’ve been very encouraged by the reception given to his first yearlings, which fetched up to £50,000 at the sales,” remarked Holdcroft. “Many of them will be joining some of the best trainers of sprinters in the country and he’s got every chance of being among the early winners next season.”

IRELAND

INVINCIBLE REIGNS FOR IRISH NATIONAL STUDInvincible Spirit will remain on a €120,000 fee for the 2019 breeding season, reflecting his remarkable consistency in producing winners at the highest level across the world.

This year Invincible Spirit added the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup hero Eqtidaar to his resume of top-flight winners. His two-year-old crop of 2018, the first bred off a six-figure covering fee for the Irish National Stud’s kingpin, contained Magna Grecia, who won the Gr.1 Vertem Futurity Stakes a fortnight ago, and Royal Meeting, whose victory in the Gr.1 Criterium International came on the same weekend.

‘Invincible Spirit once again proved he is the King of Speed with three individual Gr.1 winners among 19 Stakes winners in 2018,” remarked the stud’s CEO Cathal Beale.

The stud’s roster of young sires have all had their fees trimmed, as the stud consulted with breeders on the difficulties they have encountered at this season’s auctions.

“We have taken on board what breeders have told us, about how difficult trade in the middle market has been, and how hard it is for them to make a profit. Consequently we have tried very hard to tailor our stallions’ fees to their needs, to give them every chance of succeeding,” Beale explained.

Free Eagle, whose first yearlings to sell at auction were headed by a €400,000 colt at the Goffs Orby Sale, has seen his fee trimmed

raced by Bill and Tim Gredley, he won the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes last year and the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes at the start of this season. He competed at the highest level, finishing second when conceding weight to Polydream in the Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, beating Gr.1 winners including The Tin Man, Librisa Breeze, Brando, Unfortunately and Sands Of Mali. The Gredleys will continue to support James Garfield at stud with their broodmare band.

Mrs Cashman explained the thought process behind the fee chosen for James Garfield.

“We put him in at €7,000 because we think it is vital that a horse is well-supported and we think that we have pitched him at a level that will, hopefully, allow him to be commercial.”

Kodi Bear, whose first foals are due to sell in the coming weeks at Goffs and Tattersalls, remains unchanged on €6,000. The six-year-old was second in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes at two and beat Muhaarar to win the Listed Winkfield Stakes that year. As a three-year-old, the son of Kodiac won the Gr.2 Celebration Mile and the Gr.3 Sovereign Stakes.

“We like his foals on the ground and he has been very popular with breeders. He was fully booked in his first two years and we have kept him at the same fee for his third season, which can often be a difficult one for stallions,” she commented.

Moohaajim will stand for €3,000 in 2019, a reduction from his 2018 fee of €4,000. The son of Cape Cross has made an excellent start to his stallion carrer as his first crop is returning a 43 per cent strike rate, and includes the multiple winners Hard Taskmaster and Irene May, who is unbeaten.

sister to Giant’s Causeway, and is closely related to Champions Gleneagles and Marvellous.

National Defense, winner of the stallion-making Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and a son of Invincible Spirit, has seen his fee drop to €8,000 for his second season at stud. He is a grandson of the highly influential Kingmambo from the extraordinarily successful Mr Prospector damline.

Dragon Pulse will stand at €6,000, down from €8,000 last year after another excellent season in which he sired Listed-winning juveniles Chicas Amigas and I’ll Have Another.

First season sire Gale Force Ten has been reduced to €3,000 after a promising start to his stallion career, while Elusive Pimpernel, whose good-looking stock are impressing National Hunt breeders, remains on €1,000.

ACCLAMATION HEADS RATHBARRY ROSTER FOR 2019Acclamation will remain on his career-high fee of €40,000 for the 2019 season. Another fine season for Acclamation, who will turn 20 on 1st January, was capped by the brilliant victory of his three-year-old son Expert Eye in last weekend’s Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Mile.

He is now the sire of five individual Gr.1 winners, and developing a burgeoning reputation as a progenitor of sires with the aforementioned Expert Eye joining the likes of leading sire Dark Angel in retiring to stud.

“With all of our stallions we want to ensure that their fees are attractive to breeders, and remain commercial. We have kept Acclamation on €40,000, his fee for the past two seasons, and his book has been full both years. He is very popular with breeders and is an excellent stallion, hopefully he remains as successful with the better-bred crops that he has to come,” remarked Catherine Cashman.

On the National Hunt front, Master Dino took the Gr.1 Prix Cambaceres last November and has since landed three Gr.3s this year and lines up as a leading contender in tomorrow’s Gr.1 Prix Renaud du Vivier. AXXOS MAKES THE MOVE FROM FRANCE TO COOLAGOWNAxxos, who stood at Haras de la Haye Pesnel this year, has been purchased to stand at David Stack’s Coolagown Stud, in a deal brokered by Richard Venn. The son of Monsun will stand for €2,500 live foal, with a concession for fillies.

Stack said: “Axxos is a fine stamp of a horse, standing at 16.1hh, and I’m convinced breeders will fall in love with him when they see him.

“He also has a wonderful temperament. He has sired lots of smart performers despite limited chances and is an excellent outcross for Sadler’s Wells-line mares.”

Tagula’s fee of £4,000 remains unaltered for the upcoming season. He is the sire of Champion Miler Canford Cliffs and Gr.1 winner Limato, who won the Gr.2 Challenge Stakes last month.

“He will be 26 on 1st January but his fertility is as good as it has ever been,” she added.

NEW BAY COLT IMPRESSES AT NOVEMBER FLAT SALEA colt hailing from the first crop of the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club hero New Bay carried all before him at the Tattersalls Ireland Flat Foal and Breeding Stock Sale when selling to Tom Whitehead for €60,000 to head a challenging day’s trade.

For the most part, the returns from 12 months ago were out of reach, with turnover for the one-day sale coming in at just short of €600,000, which was a fall of 22 per cent. The median dropped from €3,500 to €3,000, though there was a four per cent improvement in the average to €6,176. The challenges faced by this part of the market were again evidenced by the clearance rate coming in at 50 per cent, which was a drop of nine points on last year.

On a generally subdued day, there were a couple of taking colts who lit up proceedings and none more so than the Baroda and Colbinstown Studs-consigned session-topper, whose Ballylinch Stud-based sire also finished an excellent second in the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains.

As well as being by a top-class son of Dubawi, Lot 170 is also the first produce of an Acclamation half-sister to the Gr.1 Prix Morny second Gallagher (Bahamian Bounty) and a quartet of Listed-placed runners, including the dam of the dual Gr.2 winner Prize Exhibit. This is also the family of this year’s Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes winner Accidental Agent (Delegator).

A number of interested pinhookers made a play for this good-looking March-born colt and Ciaran Conroy went as far as €58,000, but he was forced to concede defeat when Tom Whitehead rounded the price up to €60,000.

“He’s a good-looking colt and he’s a son of a very good Dubawi horse from a good family which keeps producing good horses. There’s another fresh Stakes horse under the second dam in Mohaather, who recently won the Gr.3 Horris Hill Stakes. The plan

Bred and raced by Gestut Ittlingen, the 14-year-old won the Gr.2 Union-Rennen from Appel Au Maitre as a three-year-old, as well as the Gr.3 Premio Ambrosiano the following April. His other runs included a runner-up finish to Zambezi Sun, also stationed at Coolagown, in the Gr.1 Grand Prix de Paris.

His oldest crop are seven and include the Nigel Twiston Davies-trained Calett Mad, winner of the Listed Gold Castle NH Novices’ Hurdle at Perth in April and runner-up in the Gr.2 Towton Novices’ Chase in February 2017. Other performers include the useful Czech-trained Treizor Du Pilori, placed in both the Gr.2 Criterium di Primavera and the Gr.2 Corsa Siepi dei 4 Anni last year; Regaxos, third in the Listed Grand Steeple-Chase de Loire-Atlantique last month and Epine Noire, winner of the valuable Prix de la Ville de Tourgeville at Clairefontaine in August.

A half-brother to a Listed-placed runner by Trempolino, Axxos was bred out of the dual winner Acerbis (Rainbow Quest), who was fourth in the Gr.1 Preis der Diana, a daughter of the Gr.3 winner Aragosta (Nebos). He hails from a strong German family which includes the Gr.1 Prix du Cadran winner Altano.

The Gr.2 Union-Rennen winner Axxos (Monsun) has made the move from France to Coolagown Stud, where he will stand for €2,500.

Almass (Elnadim) and there are a host of Stakes winners under the next two dams.

“He’s a nice type and I bought a lovely yearling by the sire earlier in the autumn. The sire has made a good impression with his first runners this year and you would expect them to be even better as three-year-olds next year,” remarked Foley.

Friday’s sale represented a bright start to this year’s round of foal sales for New Bay, whose only other offering was snapped up by Ballylinch Stud’s Mark Byrne for €20,000. This chesnut filly (Lot 164) was also sold by Baroda and Colbinstown Studs and is out of a Danehill Dancer mare whose first two runners have both been placed. This is a good Moyglare Stud family which has produced horses of the calibre of the Gr.1 Canadian International hero Relaxed Gesture (Indian Ridge).

“She is a very nice, correct, balanced filly with a good walk to her and we thought that she was good value. She’s for a small syndicate and they’ll probably re-offer her as a yearling. We think New Bay has thrown some tremendously nice stock,” declared Byrne.

The sale concluded with a selection of Breeding Stock and easily the pick of these was Derrinstown Stud’s Naadrah (Lot 222), who cost Herbertstown Stud man Ronan Burns €42,000. The 11-year-old daughter of Muhtathir was sold in foal to the Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Awtaad (Cape Cross). The Listed-placed mare has already produced two winners and these include the useful Moonlight Bay (Pivotal), who won the valuable Birdcatcher Nursery for Ger Lyons last season.

“She is a good-looking, Stakes-placed mare in foal to a Classic winner on a February cover and her three-year-old, Moonlight Bay, reached a rating of 95,” reflected Burns.

will be to bring him back next year at either Goffs or Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Sale,” stated the Powerstown Stud man.

DANDY AND FOOTSTEPS COLTS POPULARA well-touted son of Dandy Man more than vindicated the view that he was one of the standout foals on offer yesterday after he fetched €44,000 from Tally-Ho Stud’s Tony O’Callaghan. The first edition of this sale in 2016 yielded a tremendous pinhooking triumph for the Tally-Ho team when a Society Rock filly (the winner Summer Blossom), who was picked up for €14,500, went on to fetch €160,000 the following September.

Lot 71, whose sire has enjoyed his best year to date on the track, is the second produce of a winning Shamardal mare and he hails from the family of the Gr.1 Golden Jubilee Stakes and Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes hero Kingsgate Native (Mujadil).

“He’s by a good sire and out of a winning daughter of a good broodmare sire. He’ll be back for sale next autumn,” reflected O’Callaghan.

Tally-Ho were again to the fore a few minutes later when giving €26,000 for a Footstepsinthesand colt offered by Charel Park Stud. The smart-looking February-born colt (Lot 86) is the first produce of a Pour Moi mare, whose grandam is the Gr.1 Fillies’ Mile runner-up Dance To The Top (Sadler’s Wells). He too was bought to come back for sale as a yearling.

The first notable transaction of the session came when Joe Foley spent €16,000 on a son of Mukhadram from Rathasker Stud. Lot 16 is the first produce of the winning Teofilo mare Amaany, who was picked up for 10,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls July Sale. The colt’s grandam is the dual Listed scorer

MOONSHINER IS BRIGHTEST AT SAINT-CLOUDFive-year-old Moonshiner was a decisive winner of the Listed Prix Denisy at Saint-Cloud on Friday afternoon, a first win for the son of Adlerflug since September 2016.

Settled in fourth by Maxime Guyon, Moonshiner took a hold early as the pace set first by Magical Touch (Dubawi) but mainly

Biscuits (Posse). Gainesway was the consignor of Lot 1598, the four-year-old

Pomeroy mare Edith Court, who was bought for $230,000 by Manganaro Bloodstock and John Williams. Expecting her first foal in January by Empire Maker, she is a placed half-sister to the dual Gr.1 winner Palace (City Zip), whose first crop will be racing next year.

Lot 1686, the Stakes-placed Malibu Moon mare Jolene, was purchased by Mountmellick Farm for $220,000. The Taylor Made Sales Agency-consigned seven-year-old, in foal to Speightstown, is a daughter of Stakes winner Velvet Snow (Subordination).

KEENELAND – DAY FOUR

BROODMARE PROSPECT SAUCY DAME A SESSION-TOPPER AT $320,000Young fillies and mares with strong pedigrees brought solid prices on Thursday, the fourth day of the 12-day Keeneand November Breeding Stock Sale in Lexington, writes Liane Crossley.

After nearly nine hours of trade, 259 lots were listed as sold for $17,381,000, an average of $67,108. The median was $52,000 with a buy-back rate of 23 per cent. There are no comparable session numbers from a year ago because of a format change in the first week catalogues. At the one-third mark of the marathon auction, 832 lots have changed hands for $142,523,000 for a $171,302 average and a $105,000 median. A year ago at this point, 660 lots were sold for $144,097,000 and a $218,329 average.

Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings went to $320,000 to get Saucy Dame (Lot 1386), a three-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor, from the family of North American champion Gold Beauty. Offered as a broodmare prospect, Saucy Dame closed her nine-race career in October with two victories on her record. She raced for Louise Lally’s Summerplace Farm which bought her for $200,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale.

“We put her [in Book 3] for a reason – we wanted her to stand out and she did,” said Tom VanMeter of vendor VanMeter Gentry. “She has a big pedigree. She is a breeders’ mare.”

Abadan (Samum) was processional. When Clement Lecoeuvre on the leader upped the tempo a little, the field became a little looser and he opened up a four-length lead. Turning into the home straight, he angled for the nearside stands rail but was quickly falling back through the field as the Charlie Appleby-trained Magical Touch took the lead. The three-year-old filly was under pressure, and in behind Moonshiner was travelling better. Shaken up to challenge, he quickly surged past Magical Touch for a two and a half-length victory.

Trained by Jean-Pierre Carvalho for owner-breeder Stall Ullmann, Moonshiner was third in the Gr.3 Niederrhein-Pokkal on his previous run. Yesterday’s success was his first since he won the Gr.3 Prix du Lutece over this course and distance in September 2016.

He is a half-brother to the Gr.3-placed Monreal (Peintre Celebre) out of Montezuma, an unraced daughter of Monsun. She has a foal full-brother to Moonshiner, already named Martial Eagle.

EQUEMAUVILLE PROVES GAME IN LISTED PRIX ROGER SAINTThe Listed Prix Roger Saint was the feature race at Compiegne yesterday and was won by the Francois Nicolle-trained Equemauville.

The four-year-old son of Saint Des Saints tracked Aurelio (Kamsin) in the early stages, but the pace lifted when Eclair Mag (Network) took it up six fences out. Equemauville, whose jumping was sound throughout, was ridden to lead entering the straight and, when challenged by Haad Rin (Samum), battled back to score by a short head. Echo Sacre (Network) was a further five lengths back in third.

This was a first Stakes success for the Arqana graduate, who was second in the Gr.3 Prix General de Saint-Didier on his second start for Nicolle, having previously been trained by Jean-Paul Gallorini. He began chasing at the start of the year, won second time out and was placed in three of his four starts since.

Bred by Earl Haras de La Croix Sonnet, Sandra Hosselet and Hubert Hosselet, he is one of five winners out of the Video Rock mare Miss Academy, who won on the Flat and over hurdles and was fourth in the Gr.1 Anniversary Novices’ Hurdle.

She is out of the winning Saint Ballado mare Flawless Diamond, whose eight other winners include Mazarine Stakes winner Blue Heart and Stakes-placed Diamondaire, who became the dam of Gr.3 Gulfstream Park Sprint Stakes winner C Zee.

“Her pedigree stood out more than anything, especially being by Street Cry,” Boden said. “She’s likely to be a mare that we’ll foal out and sell [the foal] back next year. There’s a chance we’ll keep the mare, but we kinda bought her to bring her back here (to sell) next year.”

ROUNDING OUT THE TOP TENBlind Pool (Lot 1114) finished on even terms with Callista (Lot 1120) at $220,000 to be sixth most expensive lot. Saucy Dame is out of Miss Preakness Stakes winner Storm Beauty, a half-sister to Gold Beauty. As a producer, Storm Beauty is represented by Gr.3 Bold Ruler Stakes winner Buffum and Caress Stakes winner Stormy West.

A Speightstown colt foal (Lot 1282) from the family of Gr.1 Test Stakes winner Dream Rush attracted a final bid of $285,000 from Evergreen Stable to rank second on the leader board. The 27th February youngster is out of the unraced Malibu Moon mare Magical Dream, a half-sister to Dream Rush. As a producer, she is the dam of Gr.1 Frizette Stakes winner Dreaming Of Julia.

“The price exceeded expectations,” said Archie St George, who with his wife Michelle consigns under their St George Sales banner. “Hopefully we will see him down the road and that is the important part.”

As the Speightstown colt entered the ring, Lyrics (Lot 1281) was exiting with the toteboard reading $270,000 from Tenlane Farm. Consigned by Claiborne Farm, Lyrics, a four-year-old filly by Speightstown and offered in foal to Lea, won once on the track. She is out of Canadian Champion older mare Embur’s Song (Unbridled’s Song), with a family tree branching to Gr.1 Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator.

Stakes winner Harbor Mist (Lot 1228) was fourth-best on the day at $230,000. By Rockport Harbor out of the winning Risen Star mare Jaramar Miss, Harbor Mist is a half-sister to New Castle Handicap winner Jaramar Rain and a close relative to Holiday Inaugural Stakes winner Special Power and Gr.2 Peter Pan Stakes runner-up Imperial Council. ARQANA

QUINTET ADDED TO AUTUMN SALEArqana has announced five wild card Horses in Training entries for its Autumn Sale, which begins on Monday 19th November. All five young horses will be offered for sale on the first day.

Offered by his trainer Dominique Bressou, the four-year-old was fourth in the Gr.1 Prix Maurice Gillois last Sunday, his first run at that level. His dam Miss Canon is a Cadoudal half-sister to the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club, Gr.1 Prix Ganay and Gr.1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner and sire Vision D’Etat (Chichicastenango), who died aged 13 earlier this year.

Bressou also consigns Lot 179, the AQPS gelding Enzo D’Airy. A four-year-old son of Anzillero, he has been placed three times over hurdles this season. Trained by Fabrice Foucher, he won his bumper at three and has been placed twice so far this season over hurdles.

Lot 167 is the Auteuil Listed Prix Triquerville Chase second Royale Pagaille by Yorton Farm stallion Blue Bresil. ENTRY TO STUD EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMME UNDERWAYThoroughbred Breeders’ Association Entry to Stud Employment Programme (E2SE), supported by the Racing Foundation Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, delivered by The National Stud, is a training course for adults who lack practical experience but are committed to a career in the Thoroughbred breeding industry.

The course is run in two parts, beginning with an initial nine-week residential programme at The National Stud, which provides trainees with basic stud work skills, transferable skills and accredited qualifications. During this time trainees will gain horse handling and stud farm experience, which cumulates in assisting at the December Mare and Foal Sales. The nine-week residential course is fully funded by the TBA and trainees will be housed and fully catered for at the National Stud.

Following their time at the National Stud, providing the trainees have achieved a required standard, they will then be introduced to a suitable stud farm for a placement interview. The placement duration is negotiable but will be a minimum of six months in order for the trainee to achieve the Level 2 Work-Based Diploma in Racehorse Care qualification.

Island Glen (More Than Ready) was slowly away, as he had been when unplaced on his debut a couple of weeks ago, but he got to the front before the furlong marker and won with something in hand from the 150/1 shot Cheap Jack (Coach House). He is a full-brother to a winner and a half-brother to two more by Arch, and is the fifth foal out of the unraced Speightstown mare Miss Lavinia. Her dam is Miss Seffens (Dehere), who won 11 races, five of them at Stakes level, and her three successful progeny include the Gr.2-winning juvenile More Than Real (More Than Ready). Miss Seffens is the best of the four foals out of Noise Enough (Bold Ruckus), who also scored in Stakes company.

Miss Lavinia has a yearling colt by Data Link, bought for $77,000 at the Barretts Select Yearling Sale, and a colt foal by Champ Pegasus.

Unplaced on her only previous start back in May, Kiss For Luck (Zoffany) raced in the first two throughout and stayed on well to beat Kalanoura (Casamento) with a little in hand. She is the seventh foal out of the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Yesterday (Sadler’s Wells), who was placed in four other Gr.1s, including The Oaks. Also the dam of winners by Lookin At Lucky and Oasis Dream, Yesterday is a full-sister to the Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Quarter Moon, whose four Gr.1 placings included the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Oaks and Irish Oaks. She has produced four Stakes horses, including the Gr.1 Pretty Polly Stakes victrix Diamondsandrubies (Fastnet Rock) and the dam of the Gr.2 winner Eminent (Frankel). Their Classic-placed full-sister All My Loving is the dam of the ill-fated dual Gr.2 winner Thomas Chippendale (Dansili), while another, the Gr.2-placed Hold Me Love Me, produced the dual Listed scorer Renew (Dansili). The second dam, the lightly-raced Jude (Darshaan), is a full-sister to the Gr.1 Irish Oaks third Arrikala and the Gr.1-placed Listed winner Alouette (dam of multiple Gr.1 winners Alborada and Albanova), while her half-siblings are headed by Gr.2 winner Last Second (Alzao; dam of Gr.1 winner and sire Aussie Rules and grandam of the Gr.1-placed Gr.2 winners Midas Touch and Coronet) and Gr.3 winner Alleluia (Caerleon; dam of Gr.1 winner Allegretto). E2SE blogLife on the 2018 TBA’s Entry to Stud Employment Course at The National Stud continues at a fast and varied pace. We are all now happily settled in to life at Westbrook House, the weekly timetable of morning yard duties, lectures, practical training sessions, guest speakers, outside visits and, of course, social activities. In addition, we have already formed strong working relationships and supportive friendships. It is hard at times to believe that just under four weeks ago, we didn’t even know each other!

We have continued to practice and develop our skills in a wide range of yard duties and horse care sessions. As we become more confident and proficient, Yard and Training Managers are giving us more responsibility, which we relish and grab with both hands. These have included leading mares and foals into the stocks and holding them correctly for the vet, bringing in weaned foals, an increased numbers of mares and foals to turn out and bring in, giving oral medications and putting on and taking off rugs. It is a privilege to be able to handle these incredible thoroughbreds and every day we are given tips on how to improve. Alongside horse handling, perfecting the daily routines of mucking out, bedding down, and yard cleaning has been a key goal, and we are now a far cry from the students of Week 1 in these areas.

Visits during Week 3 continued to provide additional insight, learning and inspiration. We visited the Tattersalls Horses in Training Sales and received a comprehensive walk behind the scenes, in initial preparation for the end of the course when we will all be actually working at the sales. No pressure! After this, we spent a fantastic few hours at Palace House National Heritage Centre, where our guided tour included the history of racing, the examination of the thoroughbred and the skeleton of the infamous Hyperion, a practice on the mechanical horse and a visit to the impressive collection of horse art in the Fred Packard Museum and Galleries. At the start of Week 4, we were treated to a comprehensive tour of Newsells Park Stud, which was not only highly informative but inspirational.

We feel extremely lucky too in terms of the guest speakers and lecturers who continue to visit us to develop our knowledge and experience. These included an equine dentistry and health check workshop, the highlight of which was putting our hands inside the mouths of the ever-obliging Genie and Lucy, attendance at The Pedigree Club where this month’s guest speaker was Mark Johnston, and a visit from Racing Welfare which opened our eyes to the incredible amount of support we are able to receive in our new careers. Finally, to support our current assignment on breeding, Tim Lane, Stud Director of the National Stud, came to give us an informal talk, which left everyone not only better informed but laughing at the many anecdotes.

Italian season draws to a closeCharline Royale’s (Zebedee) impressive six-length win in the Gr.3 Premio Aloisi at Capannelle on Sunday completed Italian Group racing for the 2018 season and provided the home team with its 17th win, the final score being Italy 17 – 9 Rest of Europe.

A racing fan who spent the last eight years on another planet would be forgiven for thinking this was a huge improvement for the Italian racing industry. In the earlier part of the decade, Italy could only laboriously clinch a draw with the raiders in Group races and, when they sometimes collected a couple of wins more, they celebrated a ‘’very good year’’. The score in 2017 was Italy 22 – 4 Rest of Europe. The raiders won five more Group contests this year, all in the last two months. Raymond Tusk (High Chaparral) landed the Gr.2 Gran Premio del Jockey Club for the enthusiastic Middleham Park Racing team at San Siro, while the home team enjoyed three wins at Capannelle on Sunday. God Given (Nathaniel) provided an emotional last hurrah for her trainer Luca Cumani, while the German Va Bank (Archipenko) clinched the Gr.2 Premio Roma and Mark Johnston saddled Masham Star (Lawman), who gained the Gr.3 Premio Ribot on his 57th start and his first at Group level following a 25-race campaign. The German mare Night Music’s (Sea The Stars) win in the Gr.2 Premio Federico Tesio and the filly Bint Al Nasr (Areion) completed a good second half of the season for the visitors.

Italian racing officials and the racecourses took the decision to concentrate nine Group races in two cards, with the goal to increase the foreign runners and boost the rating of some races in severe danger of being downgraded. The first target was nearly hit, with 24 foreign runners in nine races, seven more than in 2017. The second is under scrutiny because some races returned disappointing results. The Premio Lydia Tesio, the last remaining Gr.1 in the Italian programme, needed to deliver an impossible average of 114 to match the requested 110 average in the last three seasons following the low average rating of 2017 (104.75). The Prix de l’Opera, for example, returned an average of 114.5.

The Lydia Tesio field included the German Oaks winner Well Timed (Holy Roman Emperor), who was fifth, beaten a length in the l’Opera, and was rated 110 for her Classic win, and the other German Navaro Girl (Holy Roman Emperor), who got the same mark when third in the Gr.1 Prix Jean Romanet. Unfortunately both missed out on a top-four finish and, in the best case scenario, the average for the race in 2018 will be 106.5, three and half pounds lower than what is required for a Gr.1 restricted to fillies and mares.

The two other Group races in serious trouble, according to the European Pattern Committee, the Gr.2 Premio Presidente della Repubblica and the Gr.2 Gran Criterium, returned mixed signals. The four-length win of the French horse Royal Julius (Royal Applause), a 110 performer, put Capannelle’s event in serious trouble.

The Championship event for two-year-olds looks more solid. In second place, the German Quest The Moon (Sea The Moon), a Gr.3 winner at Baden-Baden rated 105, pushed the winner Mission Boy (Paco Boy) at 106, and the colts who filled the other two places, Revelstoke (Toronado) and Out Of Time (Sakhee’s Secret), finished a half a length behind the runner-up. The EPC at the moment of judgement will drop the substandard rating of 2015.

Alduino and Stefano Botti landed ten Group races and enjoyed a 1-2-3 in the Gr.2 Derby Italiano. The winner Summer Festival (Poet’s Voice) was subsequently sold to Hong Kong and is in training with Peter Ho. The runner-up Henry Mouth (Henrythe-navigator) was not seen again after winning the Listed Gran Premio d’Italia in early June and the filly Flower Party (Duke Of Marmalade) will fly to the US following her sale to Larry Brookshire.

Another big player for the Botti team will leave Cenaia in the next few days. The Japanese-owned Mac Mahon (Ramonti), who won the Gr.2 Derby Italiano and the Listed Qatar Derby in 2017, had just one start this season in Italy and is expected to join the stud of owner Takaia Shimakawa.

Alduino and Stefano Botti landed five fewer Group races than in 2017, but their domination of the Italian racing scene is even stronger. Their cavalry have earned €3.38m in prize money with one and half months to go this year. They earned €4.41m last year, the same amount collected by the 11 trainers who finished from second to twelfth in the standings combined. This season, you need to add the earnings of the next 13 trainers to match the Bottis’ bankroll.

This weekend five Stakes races will be contested at San Siro and Capannelle and the Bottis will have ten runners. On Saturday at San Siro, Andrew Balding will be represented by Belle Meade (Roderic O’Connor), who is bidding for some black type in the Listed Premio Chiusura against a strong field of locals, headed by the defending champion Poeta Diletto (Poet’s Voice).

On Sunday in Rome, the Kingsclere trainer will saddle the homebred Highland Pass (Passing Glance) in the Listed Premio Buontalenta, a race also targeted by Sir Mark Prescott for the three-year-old filly Harmonica (Pivotal).

Letter fromAmerica by JOHN P. SPARKMAN

The two worlds of the Breeders’ CupOne of the explicit goals of the founders of the Breeders’ Cup

was to foster international competition. The very first Breeders’ Cup at Hollywood Park in 1984 met that goal

when the British-bred, French-trained Lashkari defeated the French-bred and -trained All Along to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf with the British-bred, American-trained Raami third, and the Australian-bred, American-trained Strawberry Road fourth, and four American-bred turf stars well-beaten, along with three more Europeans.

The Breeders’ Cup Mile, the only other turf race on the seven-race card, was a bit less international, although it was won by the Irish-bred Royal Heroine, trained in California by then English ex-pat John Gosden. The only two European-trained entries, the American-bred Lear Fan and Irish-bred Prego, finished seventh and ninth, respectively.

Three European-trained horses took on the Americans in their own element on dirt, with David O’Brien’s Concert Hall finishing seventh in the Juvenile and Michael Cunningham’s Princess Tracy and Bill O’Gorman’s Reesh finishing fifth and 11th respectively in the Sprint.

Over the years since that rather ignominious beginning, there have been some stunningly memorable victories by European-trained horses in Breeders’ Cup dirt races, perhaps most notably Arcangues’ 133/1 shocker in the 1993 Classic, Arazi’s swooping runaway in the 1991 Juvenile, and Johannesburg’s celebratory win in the 2001 Juvenile in the emotional shadow of the fallen towers. European-trained horses have won a total of seven Breeders’ Cup races on dirt, with, interestingly enough, the Juvenile accounting for four of those seven.

The story is, of course, very different for the Breeders’ Cup races on turf. European-trained horses have won 22 of 35 editions of the Breeders’ Cup Turf, including nine of the last 11. European horses have captured 13 of 35 Breeders’ Cup Miles, eight of 12 Juvenile Turfs, eight of 20 Filly and Mare Turfs, but, surprisingly, none of the 11 Turf Sprints. The American-bred and -trained Bulletin won the inaugural Juvenile Turf Sprint this year.

Europe’s relative dominance of the Breeders’ Cup events on turf is hardly a surprise. Obviously the vast majority of American races are run on dirt, while the percentages are essentially reversed in Europe. Secondly, after American breeders turned inward in response to the crash of the bloodstock market in the late 1980s and the temporary withdrawal of Sheikh Mohammed and Coolmore from the American yearling market, American

commercial breeders have actively avoided breeding turf horses, with the inevitable result of a sharp decline in the quality of American turf races.

The relative lack of success in the Breeders’ Cup Mile and Turf Sprint does require a bit of elucidation. You would have to ask European trainers why only two really Championship quality European sprinters, the fillies Marsha in 2017 and Fleeting Spirit in 2008, have run in the Turf Sprint. That is probably explanation enough. Starspangledbanner’s participation in 2012 does not count, since he was attempting a comeback after failing to impregnate many mares at stud.

At this year’s Breeders’ Cup, European-trained horses enjoyed the additional advantage of racing over the type of rain-softened going American turf horses seldom, if ever, encounter. With racing five days a week in many venues, American racing secretaries switch routine turf races off the turf to the dirt course at the slightest hint of rain. Enable and Magical were simply better than the American grass horses in any case, so the going had little to do with the outcome of the Turf, and, although Sistercharlie is now American-trained, the first six home in the Filly and Mare Turf were all European-bred.

Soft going may have aided Expert Eye in the Mile, though, by slowing down the front-running Analyze It and Catapult enough to give the Juddmonte colt time to get organized and catch them over going they had never encountered before, and a similar situation occurred in the Juvenile Turf, where Line Of Duty swooped late to nail the Americans near the wire. Again, no top-class European sprinters contested the Turf Sprint and it hardly mattered where anything was trained in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Nothing was going to catch Newspaperofrecord, regardless of origin or the softness of the ground.

At the heart of John Gaines’s vision in 1984, though, were the stud fees of American stallions. Even with a yearling selling for $10.2-million the previous year, Gaines recognized that the level of prize money available could not long support the fees being asked for the top stallions of the day and the total syndication price required to acquire a top horse. Given the market crash that soon followed the inaugural Breeders’ Cup, it took at least a decade, but for the last 25 years or so, it has been clear that Gaines was right.

Racing venues all over the world now stage their own version of the Breeders’ Cup and international racing is much the better for it.

Obligate (Frankel) just held on to make a winning debut here. She is the first foal out of the unraced Responsible (Oasis Dream), who is a half-sister to seven Group winners, including leading sire Dansili (Danehill), a triple Group winner who was placed six times at Gr.1 level, his full-sister Banks Hill, heroine of the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes, Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf and Gr.1 Prix Jacques Le Marois (and dam of Gr.1 winner Romantica and dual Listed scorer and sire Ideal World and grandam of the Listed scorer Sangarius), Heat Haze (Green Desert), winner of the Gr.1 Matriarch Stakes and Gr.1 Beverly D Stakes (and dam of the Gr.3 winner Mirage Dancer), Intercontinental (Danehill), the Gr.1 Matriarch Stakes and Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner, the Gr.1 Manhattan Handicap and Gr.1 Man O’War Stakes victor and sire Cacique (Danehill), the Gr.1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes and Gr.1 Hollywood Cup Turf Stakes winner Champs Elysees (Danehill) and the Gr.3 Cardinal Handicap winner Deluxe (Storm Cat). Blu Air Force – Queen Applause (Royal Applause) O: Manila Illuminati, B: Stefano Luciani, T: Vincenzo Fazio Distances: 2½l, ½l. 14 ran

Chemda Tek (Blu Air Force) finally recorded a well-deserved first win following six places in her previous seven starts. The speedy filly headed a 1-2 for the Master of Sprinters, Vincenzo Fazio, who also trains the runner-up Aravasa (Permesso). Chemda Tek is the second foal and winner out of Queen Applause (Royal Applause), who collected six places, but failed to score. The breeder Stefano Luciani bought from her catalogue page, as she is a half-sister to three winners and her dam, Cragreen (Green Desert), is a winning half-sister to Crodas (Shirley Heights), a multiple Stakes winner and Classic-placed. The third dam, Croda Alta (Caro), won the Gr.2 (then) Premio Chiusura and became a pivotal broodmare for Italian breeding. FRANCO RAIMONDI
