Coolmore also has sires inJapan, New Zealand, Chile and Argentina.

Magnier served in the Irish Senate for a period in the late 1980s andhas been a member of both the Irish racing industryʼs two governingbodies, the Irish Horseracing Authority (IHA) and the Turf Club. Hewas nominated to the IHA in 1994 by order of the Minister forAgriculture having previously served for many years on itspredecessor, the Racing Board (also by Government appointment).

Magnier is a partner in the Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados, and in theMitchells and Butler pub company with fellow investors Michael Taborand Derrick Smith.

Sangster died in 2004, but had long since dropped out of his businesspartnership with Magnier. In the mid-1990s, Michael Tabor began

investing in horses with Magnier, and later Derrick Smith. Most horsesare owned in a three-way partnership, but not all. When VincentOʼBrien retired, Magnier found other good judges to help pick outhorses at the sales, headed by Demi OʼByrne, Paul Shanahan andTim Hyde.

The partnership grouped a great trainer with a big capital investor anda breeding expert. They bought American blood, causing a big splashat the Keeneland sales, and dominated the European classics ...Initially, Coolmore was forced to sell its American-bred yearlingpurchases that went on to achieve great things on the racecourse, such as The Minstrel and Alleged, to finance further acquisitions. Butin 1982, Be My Guest gave Coolmore its first siresʼ championship andhe has been followed by Caerleon, Danehill, and most importantly ofall, the 14-time champion Sadlerʼs Wells. An era came to an end inApril 2011 when Sadlerʼs Wells died at the ripe old age of 30.

When Magnierʼs father, Tom, died suddenly in 1966, Magnier waswithdrawn from school at the age of 16 and plunged into managementof the familyʼs Grange Stud, County Cork ... Never afraid to take a risk, especially in the early days, he pulled off his first big coup in Oct.1971, buying Green God from David Robinson just two days before hewon the Vernons Sprint Cup. Vincent OʼBrien spotted Magnierʼs talentand installed him as manager when he bought Coolmore Stud inpartnership with Robert Sangster in 1975.

The Magnier family was well known in the south of Ireland for standinghigh-quality jumping stallions long before John was born. Operatingsince the 1850s, the Magnier name has been associated with a whole

  • sequence of top-class steeplechasing stallions, including Deep Run,who was champion jumping sire for the 14th successive year in 1993.

Although he started out as a farmer, albeit a very astute one, Magnieris reputed to make more money on the stock market now than he doesthrough his bloodstock interests ... For instance, in conjunction with

another powerful racehorse owner, J.P. McManus, Magnier spent over£100 million in acquiring a major shareholding in Manchester UnitedFootball Club. In May 2005, some five years later, the pair sold theirstake at an estimated £80 million profit when Malcolm Glazer, ofTampa Bay Buccaneers fame, bought the club ... The Sunday Timesestimates his Coolmore racing empire to be worth $200 million.

    Quick facts about Aidan O'Brien:

  • He has saddled seven Breedersʼ Cup winners – the 2001 Juvenile withJohannesburg; the 2010 Marathon with Man Of Iron; two renewals ofthe Juvenile Turf with Wrote (Ire) (2011) and George Vancouver(2012); two renewals of the Turf with High Chaparral (Ire) in 2002 and2003, the latter in a dead-heat with Johar; and the one that probablymeans the most to him, the 2011 win in the Turf with St NicholasAbbey (Ire) with his son Joseph in the irons. His numeroussecond-place finishes include the narrow loss to Tiznow by GiantʼsCauseway in the 2000 Breedersʼ Cup Classic and Henrythenavigatorʼsnear miss in the same race in 2008.

Going into the 2013 Breedersʼ Cup, OʼBrien had won eightGroup/Grade 1 races, including the Epsom Derby for a fourth time withRuler Of The World (Ire), who progressed from being an unracedthree-year-old to a Classic winner in less than two months. He alsowon a second English Classic with Leading Light (Ire) (St Leger).Other top-class victories included the Juddmonte International(Declaration of War), Queen Anne (Declaration Of War), CoronationCup (St Nicholas Abbey (Ire)), Irish 2000 Guineas (Magician (Ire)),Dubai Sheema Classic (St Nicholas Abbey (Ire)) and Dewhurst Stakes(War Command).

OʼBrien is currently locked in a battle with current champion RichardHannon for the British Trainerʼs title, which is decided on total prizemoney, rather than number of victories. Despite the relative paucity ofGroup/Grade 1 wins this season (in 2012 he notched 15 Group/Grade1 wins and 20 in 2011), OʼBrien, who last won the crown in 2008, isseeking his fifth such triumph.

His victory in the St Leger at Doncaster with 7-2 favourite LeadingLight, his fourth in the Classic, was OʼBrienʼs 217th Group/Grade 1success.

Stable star St Nicholas Abbey took his career earnings to just under £5million with a race record third successive victory in the Group 1Coronation Cup at Epsom in June. It was his sixth success at thehighest level. But the six-year-old Montjeu colt suffered acareer-ending injury when fracturing a pastern during a piece of workin preparation for the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes inJuly, and underwent emergency colic surgery soon after. Sadly, theweight-bearing pin inserted into his cannon bone broke in late Augustforcing surgeons to immediately remove it and place his leg in a cast. However, it is hoped he will make a full recovery for a stud career.

St Nicholas Abbey gave OʼBrien a seventh victory in the CoronationCup (G1). His first came with Yeats in 2005. That race was not nearlyas strong as the earlier Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) which saw abrilliant tactical ride from Joseph OʼBrien, as his mount beat five otherG1 scorers, including Japan Cup winner Gentildonna.

One of the few Europeans to earn success in the Breedersʼ Cup of2012, the same team in the same race and secured the same result asOʼBrien and jockey Ryan Moore combined with George Vancouver tofollow up the 2011 triumph of Wrote in the Juvenile Turf. The son of2008 Breedersʼ Cup Classic runner-up Henrythenavigator sadly failedto build on that success in 2013, racing without success three times atthe top level in England.

  • Lines Of Battle, who had been beaten in the 2012 Breedersʼ CupJuvenile Turf by stablemate George Vancouver, gave the yard asecond successive victory in the UAE Derby (G2) at Meydan followingthe victory of Daddy Long Legs in 2012.

In June 2013, Ruler Of The World, a son of four-time champion sireGalileo, became OʼBrienʼs fourth Epsom Derby winner followingGalileo, High Chaparral and Camelot. He was the first winner of theClassic to be unraced as a two-year-old since Commander In Chief in1993. He provided jockey Ryan Moore with a second victory in therace, following his success on Workforce in 2010.

Declaration Of War gave OʼBrien a third victory in the Group 1 QueenAnne Stakes with a scintillating performance at Royal Ascot and afourth success in the Group 1 International Stakes at York, earningimmediate quotes of 10-1 for the Breedersʼ Cup Classic. OʼBrien wentas far to say as the four-year-old War Front colt reminded him a lot ofhis previous International scorer Giants Causeway, who was touchedoff by Tiznow in the 2000 Classic.

Magician, a son of top-class Coolmore sire Galileo, handed OʼBrien arecord ninth Irish 2000 Guineas victory and the yardʼs sixth in sevenyears under Joseph OʼBrien, who was landing his third consecutivevictory in race. Magicianʼs easy victory at odds of 10-3, gave ownerSue Magnier a record eighth success in the mile Classic at theCurragh.

In what was arguably an otherwise frustrating season for OʼBrien, another Ballydoyle flag-bearer, four-time Group/Grade 1 winner

Camelot (GB), who went close to winning an elusive Triple Crown atthree, had a truncated 2013 campaign. Undefeated until thwarted byEncke in his bid to become the first horse since 1970 to win the TripleCrown in the St Leger at the end of his Classic campaign, he surviveda near-death experience after a major bout of colic. Last yearʼs 2000Guineas and Derby winner ran just three times in 2013 but was turnedover in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at 4-11 and then finished fourth in thePrince of Walesʼs at Royal Ascot in June when favourite. The decisionto retire him was made on Oct. 14, 2013 and he will stand at Coolmorefor next yearʼs breeding season.

While some of his older horses had a sub-par year, OʼBrienʼs juvenilesoffered plenty of hope for the future. Geoffrey Chaucer, a son ofMontjeu, provided OʼBrien with a 13th victory in the Group 2 BeresfordStakes at the Curragh, a race won in recent seasons by top-class SeaThe Stars and St Nicholas Abbey. Runner-up and stablemateOklahoma City subsequently took the valuable 7 furlong TattersallsMillions 2-Year-Old Trophy at Newmarket, while War Commandhanded OʼBrien his third Dewhurst Stakes (G1) victory at Newmarketon Oct. 12, 2013.

OʼBrienʼs son, Joseph, broke Mick Kinaneʼs 1993 record of 115winners ridden in an Irish Flat racing season when Marvellous won amaiden at Navan on Oct. 9, 2013. OʼBrien wasnʼt even born whenKinane set the record and looks set to earn a second successivechampion jockeys title.

Returning to the stratospheric heights of earlier years, in 2012OʼBrienʼs stellar feats included claiming the first four of the five English

  • Classics with Camelot (2000 Guineas and Derby), HomecomingQueen (1000 Guineas) and Was (Oaks). Camelot was the flag-bearer,with OʼBrien saying he was the best he had ever trained – high praisefrom the trainer of Galileo, Giantʼs Causeway, Rock of Gibraltar,Montjeu, etc.

Camelotʼs quest for the first English Triple Crown since Nijinsky II in1970, with a victory in the 2012 Irish Derby after winning the first twolegs (2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby), was beaten narrowly byEncke in the St. Leger by what many thought was a poor ride byJoseph OʼBrien. The loss also thwarted OʼBrienʼs attempt to be thefirst trainer ever to land all five English classics in a single season.

OʼBrien saddled his seventh Racing Post Trophy (G1) winner in 2012when Kingsbarns won under his son, Joseph, becoming one of theearly 2012 Epsom Derby favorites, but was forced to miss the 2013Epsom Classic after he developed a foot infection after tearing off ashoe in a routine gallop. He made a belated seasonal debut inSeptember, finishing a distant last of six to The Fugue in the IrishChampion Stakes (G1).

Pedro The Great , by Breeders ʼ Cup Class ic runner-upHenrythenavigator, provided OʼBrien with a record 12th victory in thePhoenix Stakes (G1) in 2012. OʼBrien has won this race, which heuses as a springboard to the following yearʼs classics, seven of the last10 years.

OʼBrien took over the training of Excelebration from Marco Botti in2012 and despite running second to Frankel twice, turned him into a

world-class miler. Excelebration won the Prix du Jacque le Marois (G1)and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1) as well as the GladnessStakes (G3) in 2012.

So You Think (NZ) headed to Australia for stud duty in 2012, but notbefore OʼBrien won two more Group 1 races from him – the Prince ofWalesʼs Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Tattersalls Gold Cup. OʼBrienadmitted it took a year and a half to “learn how to train him” andapologized to Australian fans for “making a mess of it” in 2011 withoverwork.

Imperial Monarch took the Grand Prix de Paris (G1) to add to OʼBrienʼsGroup 1 haul, and additional Group races were won in 2012 by DaddyLong Legs, Battle of Marengo, Declaration of War, Magical Dream, Up,Windsor Palace, and Furnerʼs Green.

The OʼBriensʼ home at Ballydoyle caught fire in late Sept. 2012, buteveryone got out without being hurt. The roof was seriously damagedthough and the house uninhabitable.

In 2011, OʼBrienʼs stellar feats included a second consecutive sweepof the first three places in the Irish Derby, with Treasure Beach,Seville, and Memphis Tennessee. In 2010, the finishers were CapeBlanco, Midas Touch, and Jan Vermeer. ... The win was OʼBrienʼsninth Irish Derby, and his sixth consecutive victory in the race, won inprevious years by Dylan Thomas, Soldier of Fortune, Frozen Fire,Fame and Glory, High Chaparral, Galileo, and Desert King.

OʼBrien won his 8th National Stakes (G1) in 2011 with Power, and also•

    Quick facts about Nikolaus Bock:

Flat Out, whom Bock bred in Florida, became only the 10th horse towin the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) twice when he capturedback-to-back editions of the race in 2012 and 2011. When he finishedfifth in the 2011 Breedersʼ Cup Classic, he was Bockʼs first starter aseither breeder or owner. Flat Out finished third in the Classic in 2012,and is likely for a third attempt in 2013.

Bock has bred Thoroughbreds in Illinois and Florida, although he hasnot registered a foal in the Sunshine State in several years. In 2010,he registered two Illinois-bred foals. He purchased Flat Outʼs dam,Cresta Lil, while she was carrying him for $5,000 from Claiborne Farmat the 2005 Keeneland November mixed sale and the next year shewas sold to A. Renee McCollum for $3,500 at the 2006 OcalaBreeders Sale October mixed sale. Cresta Lil has not produced aregistered foal since 2008. Flat Out was sold as a weanling for$11,800 at the 2006 OBS fall mixed sale and then he was sold againfor $85,000 at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky select yearling sale.

Bock purchased Native Roots, the dam of 2004 Breedersʼ CupJuvenile winner Wilko, when she was in foal to Talk is Money for$22,000 at the OBS 2004 winter mixed sale. He then bred her toStreet Cry and put her up for sale. “I was getting offers of $50,000 forher and told them to forget it,” he said. “I sold her to someone inIreland who I prefer not to name for six figures. The guys who boughther put her in foal to Street Cry at the 2005 Tattersalls Ltd. Decembermixed sale in Newmarket, England but then scratched her. They soldthe foal privately but he never made it to the racetrack.” At the time, the Thoroughbred Times called the move a “tremendous pinhook forIllinois breeder Nikolaus Bock.” He also bred Gautier, who finishedthird in the $250,000 Golden Bear Stakes at Hoosier and the $75,000Birdstone Stakes at Saratoga in 2011.

Bock said that he never went to the track, either in Europe or NorthAmerica, or had any interest in racing until his friend, Edward Cox,brought him to the 1984 Arlington Million, won by John Henry. He wascaptivated and decided to get into the business. “My friend, Ed Cox,tried to talk me out of it,” he said. “I bought my first horse privately for$3,500 and named him Oberklaus. He made about $90,000 so thatwas a pretty good start.”

Bock currently races horses he owns in Illinois and West Virginia andboards about 20 mares in Kentucky at farms in Paris and Florence. “Ilike to buy mares at sales when others ignore them,” he said. MayApple, who produced a foal by Curlin and was bred back to him, is oneof his mares.

Bock is a director of Penson Futures, a Chicago-based full-service•

  • futures commission merchant (FCM) providing futures execution andclearing services on the worldʼs major exchanges ... He was presidentof the biggest grain processing plant in Germany and came to theUnited States in 1975 after being recruited by executives of major

companies. “When I came here I was in charge of the largest soybeanoperation in the country,” he said. “Then I became a trader responsiblefor export business. In 1982 I joined the Chicago Board of Trade andhad clients from around the world, mostly in the agricultural business.”

Their best horses include Da Hoss, who won the 1996 Breedersʼ Cup Mile (G1) and returned two yearslater to win another Mile, and Groovy, runner-up in the Breedersʼ CupSprint (G1) and Eclipse Award champion sprinter in 1987. Art Preston entered the Thoroughbred world in the late 1970s when hepurchased a percentage of a claiming horse. With brothers Jack andthe late J.R., Preston established Preston Farm near Quanah, Texas, and later launched Prestonwood Farm in the heart of centralKentuckyʼs famed Bluegrass region. The farm was renamed WinStarFarm when it was sold in 2000 to Kenny Troutt and Bill Casner.(Casner sold out to Troutt in Oct. 2010.) WinStar is home to prominentstallion Tiznow, the only two-time winner of the Breedersʼ Cup Classic.

According to his Presco Inc.ʼs Web site, Prestonʼs “companies havedeveloped and sold numerous oil and gas assets, with cumulativesales prices (not counting normal production revenues) in excess of$400 million.”
