6 “O Sovereign LORD ,” I said, “I cspeak for you! I’m too young!”

7 The L ORD replied, “Don’t say, ‘I’m young,’ for you must go wherever I

send you and say whatever I tell you.

8 And don’t be afraid of the people, for Iwill be with you and will protect you. I,

the L ORD , have spoken!” 9 Ththe L ORD reached out and touched mymouth and said, “Look, I have put my

words in your mouth!

10 Today I appoint you to stand up againstnations and kingdoms. Some you must uprootand tear down, destroy and overthrow. Others

you must build up and plant.” 11 Tthe L ORD said to me, “Look, Jeremiah! What you see?” And I replied, “I see a branch from

an almond tree.”

12 And the L ORD said, “That’s right, andmeans that I am watching, and I w

certainly carry out all my plans.”

13 Then the L ORD spoke to me again andasked, “What do you see now?”

And I replied, “I see a pot of boiling water,

spilling from the north.”

14 “Yes,” the LORD said, “for terror from the nowill boil out on the people of this land. 1

am calling the armies of the kingdoms of the north

to come to Jerusalem. I, the L ORD , have sp“They will set their thrones at the gates of the city.

They will attack its walls and all the other towns of

Judah.

16 I will pronounce judgment on my people for alltheir evil — for deserting me and burning incento other gods. Yes, they worship idols made with

“Get up and prepare for acGo out and tell them everything I tell you to say.Do not be afraid of them, or I will make you look

18 For see, today I have made you strong like afortified city that cannot be captured, like an ironpillar or a bronze wall. You will stand against the

whole land — the kings, officials, priests, anpeople of Judah. 19 They will fight you, but twill fail. For I am with you, and I will take care of

you. I, the L ORD , have spoken!”

10 Then I said, “What sorrow is mine, mymother. Oh, that I had died at birth!

I am hated everywhere I go. I amneither a lender who threatens to

foreclose nor a borrower who refuses to

pay — yet they all curse me ”

11 The L ORD replied, “I will take care oyou, Jeremiah. Your enemies will ask you

to plead on their behalf in times oftrouble and distress. 12 Can a man br
