He has studied the molecular and structural effects that periosteal resection has on physeal growth acceleration. Through a collaboration with the University of Michigan, he has begun translating this work to develop a knifeless procedure to resect the periosteum and accelerate growth non-invasively.

Soon to be validated in small and large animals, this work has been supported by foundational grants from The Hartwell Foundation (two separate awards) and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA). Together with Dr. Haider, here at UNMC, Dr. Halanski is developing other novel treatment strategies to use in this model and

has already been in discussions with UNEMED about this approach.

Dr. Halanski’s interest in growth has allowed him to become recognized as one of the leaders in this area in the orthopaedic community as he co-chaired the NIH supported (R13) 2018 AAOS/ORS symposium on the physis, presented a scientific exhibit on the subject at the 2019 AAOS annual meeting, and was a keynote speaker at the Children’s Orthopaedic Trauma Summit 2019, in St. Paul MN, lecturing on physeal response to injury.

Message from the chair

Kevin L. Garvin, M.D. Professor and Chair L. Thomas Hood, M.D., Professorship

Sincerely,

This year has been an exciting time for both reflecting on our department’s rich history and building for its continued growth.

As many of you are aware, this year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the department’s residency program, which began in 1969 with its first resident, Lowell Niebaum, M.D., a native of Fremont, Nebraska. More than 170 residents have graduated from the program since its inception, and thirty-four states have former UNMC orthopaedic residents practicing as orthopaedic surgeons.

It was wonderful to see the tremendous turnout of alumni and guests who took part in the anniversary celebrations. Make sure to look for photos from the celebration in the winter edition of Breaking News.

The orthopaedic residency program continues to be highly competitive, with five residents selected per year from an application pool of more than 600 medical students. Our residents are also actively involved in research, and have been coauthors on nearly 40 articles since 2013.

Since our last newsletter, we have welcomed two new faculty members. Matthew Halanski, M.D., joined the department as a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon and the chief of orthopaedics at Children’s Hospital. Dr. Halanski brings a significant amount of clinical and research experience. Alexander Sawatzke, M.D., joined our department as a foot and ankle surgeon. His presence has allowed the department to expand our patient care to include a variety of foot and ankle issues.

This year has held many exciting events and accomplishments for the department. Our faculty continue to make tremendous efforts in research, education and service to the community. Turn to page 9 to see a listing of faculty publications, presentations and grants.

We are grateful for our engaged and generous alumni base, as well as other individuals and organizations who contribute financially, or otherwise, to help our department achieve its three-fold mission of education, research and patient care. Thank you!

Dr. Konigsberg appointed assistant dean for admissionsAfter serving on the UNMC admissions committee for six years, Dr. Konigsberg was asked to take on an additional role as assistant dean of admissions following the retirement of Dr. Jeff Hill.

As part of his new responsibilities, Dr. Konigsberg travels to three Nebraska colleges—Chadron State College, Wayne State College and the University of Nebraska at Kearney —each year to oversee the selection of participants in the Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP) and the Kearney Health Opportunities Program (KHOP).

RHOP is designed to encourage rural residents to pursue careers in health care fields. Students selected are guaranteed admission to UNMC provided they meet all stated requirements and complete their pre-professional studies at Chadron State College, Wayne State College, or Peru State College.

KHOP is a cooperative program between the University of Nebraska at Kearney and UNMC. The purpose of the program is to recruit and educate students from rural Nebraska communities who are committed to returning to rural Nebraska to practice healthcare.

“I enjoy being involved with the med school and the enthusiasm that the applicants and students have for starting a career in medicine,” Dr. Konigsberg said.

In his new role, Dr. Konigsberg helps to organize and coordinate applicant interviews days. At these events, he presents a welcome address to students, explains the curriculum, and leads interviews.

Dr. Konigsberg also conducts exit interviews with students who are not accepted to the programs. He meets with them in person or over the phone to discuss ways they could improve their applications.

During his time as a medical student at UNMC, Brandon Bennett, M.D., now a second-year resident in the department, served on the admission committee with Dr. Konigsberg.

“I think having somebody in orthopaedic surgery in this role can give an early exposure to applicants and students and maybe pique their interest in a career in orthopaedics,” Dr. Konigsberg said

Department welcomes Dr. SawatzkeAlexander B. Sawatzke, M.D., joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation as an assistant professor in August 2019. A native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, he is fellowship-trained in foot and ankle surgery.

Dr. Sawatzke received his undergraduate degree in integrative physiology from the University of Iowa (2009) and his medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine (2013). He completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at Grand Rapids Medical

Education Partners (2018) and an orthopaedic surgery foot and ankle fellowship at the University of Washington School of Medicine (2019).

Dr. Sawatzke’s areas of focus include: Foot and ankle trauma, hammertoes, bunions, flat feet, great toe arthritis, plantar fasciitis, sports injury of the foot and ankle, ankle instability, arthritis of the foot and ankle including ankle arthroplasty, foot and ankle deformity, Charcot deformity, and lower extremity deformity.

Welcome Resident Class of 2024Since beginning its residency program nearly five decades ago, the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has trained some of the best and brightest surgeons in the field. This summer, five residents joined our department, growing the program to a record number of 25 residents.

Neil Antonson, M.D.

Hometown: Grand Forks, ND

Medical School: University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences

What inspired your interest in orthopaedic surgery: I have the privilege of helping patients regain lost function, enable them to re-engage in activities of daily living after

being limited by pain and disease, and fix injuries that patients suffer on some of their worst days so that they may better enjoy their best days.

Three things people don’t know about you:

• I enjoy running, hiking, and being outdoors.

• I’m an avid woodworker without the time.

• I’m a science podcast nerd.

Joseph Nash, M.D.

Hometown: Elizabethtown, KY

Medical School: University of Louisville School of Medicine

What inspired your interest in orthopaedic surgery: The direct, functional impact orthopedics makes on

affected patients so they may get their quality of life back.

Three things people don’t know about you:

• I was a college baseball pitcher.

• While in college, I used to perform at a duelingpiano bar.

• I lived in Switzerland for 6 months when I was11 to learn how to speak French.

John Werner, M.D.

Hometown: Billings, MT

Medical School: Creighton University School of Medicine

What inspired your interest in orthopaedic surgery: I was drawn to medicine as a means to serve others. Orthopedics piqued my interest because of the tangible benefit and improvement in quality of life

that it can provide patients as I have experienced personally and through friends and family.

Three things people don’t know about you:

• I couples matched to Nebraska with my girlfriendwho is a first year Emergency Medicine resident.

• My hobbies include playing basketball, watchingNotre Dame football, golf, and spending time withthe family dogs.

• I am the third of four brothers and am the firstmember of my family to graduate from medicalschool. My older brother is now a second yearmedical student at the University of Washington.

John Rosenberg, M.D.

Hometown: Tucson, AZ

Medical School: Creighton University School of Medicine

What inspired your interest in orthopaedic surgery: I think many people base a significant portion of their quality of life on their ability to move functionally and without pain. Orthopaedics is uniquely situated in medicine in its ability to provide others with improved functional movement and reduction of pain, in a manner that can be transformative to one’s quality of life.

Three things people don’t know about you:

• I finished one ultra marathon, and have not been running nearly as much since.

• I graduated from the Air Force Academy.

• I love reading about American history and westerns.

Erik Moore, M.D.

Hometown: Eagle River, AK

Medical School: University of Washington School of Medicine

What inspired your interest in orthopaedic surgery: My interest in orthopaedics began early watching my dad cover sports teams and care for the local

community with a small orthopaedic practice in Alaska. I pursued a degree in engineering and saw the connection between these two fields along with the opportunity to really improve people’s quality of life.

Three things people don’t know about you:

• I grew up in Alaska and spent as much time as I could fishing in Prince William Sound and skiing at Alyeska.

• I got my degree in engineering and prior to medical school I kicked around the idea of being an astronaut during an internship at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

• My mom was a nurse at UNMC and my dad graduated from the orthopaedic residency here in the early 90’s.

research has focused much on the care of children with neuromuscular conditions, particularly those with spinal muscular atrophy. He has studied the early treatment of scoliosis in these patients and is poised to publish several manuscripts on this subject.

Dr. Halanski has studied the art of cast application and removal extensively. He has continued to publish on
