At its October 12 meeting, the Board of Directors ratified

a recommendation presented by Judging Operations to modify the Occupational Eligibility Addendum, an interpretation of Chapter 7 Section 1 of the Rules Applying to Dogs, originally adopted by the Board in 1991.

This document has been part of the Judging Approval Process since 1992 and defines those occupations which would deem one ineligible to be approved to judge by the AKC and those occupations affecting eligibility to judge at the same shows, circuit or cluster in which they offer their services.

The specific item addressed pertained to the restriction that individuals were not permitted to present dog-related seminars or clinics at shows, circuits or clusters in which they were judging until the completion of all judging assignments. As a result of the October 2012 meeting, this restriction previously found

under Section II, “Individuals with the following occupations will be eligible to judge, but cannot accept assignments at any show, companion show, circuit or cluster at which they offer their services,” was eliminated effective immediately.

Judging Operations strongly advises individuals who may conduct a seminar, clinic, or hands-on workshop for a breed they are scheduled to judge following their presentation SHOULD NOT utilize any dogs entered under them as examples of that breed. The Occupational Eligibility Addendum has been revised to reflect the recent modification approved by the Board and can be viewed on the AKC website. You are encouraged to contact Judging Operations with any questions concerning the effect of the Occupational Eligibility Addendum or any rule or policy regarding judging or exhibiting eligibility. v

The American Kennel Club is pleased to announce that Daryl Hendricks has been hired as Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective January 5, 2013. He began employment on November 12, 2012.

“Daryl brings a broad business management background to AKC, with extensive experience managing large teams in operational settings and handling budgetary responsibilities,” said Dennis B. Sprung, AKC President and CEO. “The American Kennel Club is proud to welcome him as its new COO.”

Hendricks comes to AKC from Iron Mountain Corporation, an information management services company, where he most recently served as Senior Vice President. As SVP, he was the strategic operational and customer relationship leader for the company’s Central Area, with six territories ranging from North Dakota to the Caribbean, and also oversaw the global subsidiary Intellectual Property Management, Inc.

He has held past leadership positions at Aramark Corporation, Kellogg’s Snacks Division, The Wackenhut Corporation and Professional Asset Management Group, and served as State Trooper with the Delaware State Police. Hendricks earned his MBA from Wilmington University in 1998.

Hendricks and his wife Michelle own English Cocker Spaniels, including an AKC Conformation Champion. They will relocate to Raleigh from Mundelein, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. v

The American Kennel Club is pleased to announce that Michael Szabo has been hired as an Executive Field Representative. Szabo, who joined the Conformation field staff on October 1, will be located in the Chicago area and will primarily be assigned to cover Conformation shows in the Mid-west.

“Michael brings a broad background as a breeder, valuable expertise as a former AKC Registered Handler, and extensive hands-on experience in AKC events as a superintendent,” says Patricia Proctor, who heads the conformation field staff. “The American Kennel Club is proud to welcome him.”

Szabo began his ring career in 1984 and has bred Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Akitas, Beagles, and Pointers. During a 23-year professional handling career he showed many specialty winners and All-Breed Best in Show dogs.

Szabo is a founding member of the Fulton County Ohio Kennel Club, and he has been a member of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States for over 25 years. v

All individuals who intend to apply for addi-tional breeds in the future are advised that the Judges Review Committee requests applicants to include in their letter of synopsis for each breed applied, additional information pertaining to their understanding of that breed as a result of their preparation to judge it. This would include but is not limited to the essence of that breed, its hall-mark characteristics, strengths and/or weakness of the breeds, etc. This “insight into one’s under-standing” as a result of their preparation in that breed is in addition to their verifiable experiences such as seminars, workshops, institutes, mentors, personal experience with the breed and previous judging experiences.

Judging Operations is furnishing the judging community with this knowledge to provide applicants the opportunity to review their letters with this in mind. It is at the discretion of the individual to determine if they have supplied sufficient information for the committee to accurately review their application, or if modifying and/or supplying additional information in one’s letters is warranted. It is important to understand that it is not the role of staff to determine if an applicant has provided sufficient information to justify approval in a breed applied. The onus is upon the individual, as the open design of this process places the responsibility for advancement in the hands of the applicant.

All applicants are encouraged to contact Judging Operations or a member of the Executive Field Staff with questions concerning the application and/or approval process. v

The Rat Terrier will be accepted into the Terrier Group and eligible for competition in regular breed classes on June 26, 2013.

Upon completion of the exam with a passing grade and payment of the $25 fee, all Terrier Group judges will receive automatic approval

to judge this breed at shows held after June 26, 2013. Two or more missed questions or one DQ question is considered failing and you will be advised to retake the breed exam. If the exam is not passed on the second attempt it will result

in the removal of the Group. (See Judging Approval Process effective, March 1, 2012)

Additional breed applications submitted for the balance of the Terrier Group received prior to June 24, 2013 will be required to be interviewed and a payment of $25 on this breed at the time of the scheduled interview by the office. Applicants who fail the interview by the Executive Field Representative will not be approved to judge the Rat Terrier and as a result, regardless of the Judges Review Committee’s decision on the balance of the group applied, will not be approved to judge the Terrier Group.

Individuals wishing to apply using the Adjunct Method must submit an application and a processing fee. Judging Operations will start accepting applications between January 7, 2013 and June 24, 2013. Those who miss the deadline must apply under the current system. Applications are available on the website or by contacting Judging Operations.

AKC approved judges who can demonstrate significant background in the breed may apply to judge under the Adjunct System. Examples of “significant background” would be:

• Experience in owning, breeding, exhibiting and handling the breed.

• Background in judging multiple events with a significant number of entries.

First time applicants must have 10-12 years breeding experience, take and pass the Procedural and Anatomy Exams, have judged at AKC or Non-AKC events at least six times and stewarded at least 6 times at AKC member or licensed events. (Procedural and Anatomy Exams must be requested through Judging Operations and submitted with the application).

Applicants who meet these requirements may apply by requesting an application from Judging Operations in North Carolina at 919-816-3862 or [email protected]. Application may also be downloaded from www.akc.org/dog_shows_trials/conformation/judging_information.cfm.

Earlier this year notification was sent to all judges approved for the Hound and/or Working Groups as the Chinook and Portuguese Podengo Pequeno were slated for full recognition beginning January 1, 2013. The Chinook will be joining the Working Group and the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno joining the Hound Group. By now, all judges approved for either or both of these groups should have completed the AKC breed exam and submitted their $25 processing fee (per breed) to be approved for the newly recognized breed and to maintain their Group status. Those who may have neglected to do so will not be approved to judge the applicable group at upcoming events until

satisfying the requirements as outlined in the judging Approval Process.

Judges approved for either the Hound or Working Groups are advised to review the AKC approved breed standard for the Chinook and/or the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno available on the AKC website. Approved Best in Show Judges are urged to do the same as you should be familiar with all breeds that may potentially enter your ring. In addition, do not hesitate to visit the parent club website for both the Chinook and the Podengo Pequeno for additional information and background on AKC newest additions to group competition.

At its October 2011 meeting the Board of Directors approved the AKC National Owner-Handler

Series as a sanctioned event. Not quite a full year into the program, it has been met with tremendous support by exhibitors and clubs alike. Initially only offered at select events, it quickly was modified to where any conformation all-breed show can offer the Owner-Handler Series at their show by applying through the Events Department. As approved judges, it is important to completely comprehend the judging procedures associated with this very important initiative. Previously, we included specifics regarding the regulations and judging procedures associated with the series. In addition, Judging Operations continues to send letters to all individuals scheduled to judge at events in which the O-H Series is offered. Now that we are reaching the end of the year, we felt it would be prudent to review a few key components all should remember when judging events in which the O-H Series is held. • It’s all about the dogs! Judging Operations and

the Executive Field Staff has on numerous occasions been asked by those presiding over the O-H Groups and/or O-H Best in Show if they are to award based upon the dog or the handling skill of the individual. The AKC Owner-Handler series is a showcase of owner-handled dogs, and just as with the regular classes, groups, or Best in Show, judges of the O-H Series are to award based upon their evaluation of the eligible dog(s) judged; handling skill (or lack thereof) is of no consideration in the process.

• Judges of the AKC Owner-Handler series MUST be approved AKC Conformation Judges. The judge assigned to preside over the regular classes for the breed will also select the O-H Best of Breed. Any approved judge may be assigned to judge the O-H Group or O-H Best in Show. Judges assigned the O-H Group or O-H Best in Show should be approved to judge at least one group to ensure familiarity of judging at this level. The O-H Group Judge does not necessarily have to be approved for that group or breeds within the group assigned. However, events are advised to assign the O-H group to individuals with experience within that group.

• Only those individuals who indicated they wished to participate in the Owner-Handler series at that event when entering are eligible. These entries will be marked accordingly in the catalog and the steward’s book, NOT the judge’s book. It is the steward’s responsibility to keep track of the eligible entries in the ring and the judge’s responsibility to determine which entries may be eliminated as a result of the selection of Breed of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, Best of Winners and Selects.

• An eligible owner-handler must handle the entry through all classes through Best of Breed to receive Owner-Handled Best of Breed. This includes the class that the dog was entered as well as the Winners class and the Best of Breed/Variety competition.

• It is not the responsibility of the judge or the ring steward to refuse an individual from exhibiting if you believe they may not be eligible to compete in the AKC Owner-Handler Series. These matters should be addressed to the Executive Field Representative in attendance at the event or can be submitted in writing to the AKC office. Individuals who are determined not to have been eligible to compete will have any applicable awards cancelled by the Events Department. These matters are handled similar to allegations that one may have not been eligible to compete in the Bred by Exhibitor Class.

• Ring Stewards should not under any circumstances inform the judge of entry eligibility prior to his/her selection of awards in the Best of Breed/Variety class.

With a little thought and review of the judging procedures for the AKC National Owner-Handler Series, the process in selecting these awards can be smooth and have little to no effect upon your judging time. At events in which you may be judging that are hosting the O-H Series, you are encouraged to get to your ring a few minutes early to review the judging procedures with your ring steward to ensure that everyone has understanding of the process associated with selecting this award. As always, judges and ring stewards are encouraged to seek out the Executive Field Representative to answer any questions they may have regarding the judging procedures. You are also encouraged to contact either the Judging Operations Department in advance of an upcoming assignment to have questions answered regarding the AKC National Owner-Handler Series or any matter regarding judging or judging procedures.

Please Be Very AWARE

THE STANDARD 7

Every so often while on the job, I have to have a chat with an exhibitor about their choice of bait, if you will, to get their dog’s attention in the ring. Sadly, it’s not chicken, liver or biscuit that I have to have a chat about – IT’S A LASER!?!?!?!?!

We’ve all seen the use of any number of items being used to either get the dog’s attention, to get expression out of the dog, or to just plain get the dog motivated while they are being exhibited. Some judges express their wishes to the exhibitors about the use of bait in their ring. Sometimes an overused squeaker toy is utilized. We’ve all heard of the infamous “clicker” being used. As you know, the ring is your ring to use a gaiting pattern, to give individual examinations and to make decisions. You have the responsibility to maintain safety, decorum, and correct judging procedures while you are in the ring.

Occasionally, I will notice an exhibitor utilizing a laser pointer or hand held laser which emits a pencil beam. Need I say more? But I will. In trying to locate

the danger factor beyond what we civilians already assume,

I found a startling number of warnings which accompany the use of a laser. I found that it is legal to use a laser of any power for appropriate, non-commercial private use. Well, unless the exhibitor is in their own backyard, I’m guessing they would have a legal issue.

A lot of lasers are sold with strong references to purchasing safety goggles and a safety guide. In the laser literature it is often advised to never point it at another person, animal or vehicle. I learned that even low-powered lasers can be hazardous to human eyesight – either directly or from a reflection off of a shiny surface, which can cause permanent damage in seconds. I also discovered that the label “eye-safe” can be misleading. The

laser can still burn the cornea, causing severe eye damage and at times can cause skin damage. The misuses of lasers have led to the development of laws and regulations specifically addressing laser pointers.

In all seriousness and no pun intended, but have I made my point? At the very least a laser is a potential hazard. Should an exhibitor enter your ring with a laser, it is your responsibility to be more responsible about the safety factor than they obviously are. You MUST INSIST that they put the device away, not ever use it in your ring or any other ring and I would suggest that you call the AKC Field Representative and the Show Chairman. Quite frankly, they should consider themselves lucky if you don’t dial 911.

Please be aware of the possibility of the use of a laser. I assume that some exhibitors always think that there is “the better mousetrap.” It is your ring. There must be zero tolerance for the use of a laser on the grounds of a dog show, whether in or outside the ring.

Revisions to the standard for the Miniature Schnauzer were approved July 10, 2012 and were effective September 4, 2012. Please be reminded that it is your responsibility to judge in accordance to the current AKC approved breed standard. Judges are to stay apprised of the standards for the breeds they are approved to judge. In addition, judges approved for Best in Show must remain current with the current breed standards for all breeds.

Miniature SchnauzerRevision to The StandardEffective September 4, 2012

NECK, TOPLINE, BODYTail - set high and carried erect. It is docked only long enough to be clearly visible over the backline of the body when the dog is in proper length of coat. A properly presented Miniature Schnauzer will have a docked tail as described; all others should be severely penalized. Fault - Tail set too low.

COLOR

Allowed colors: salt and pepper, black and silver and solid black. All colors have uniform skin pigmentation, i.e. no white or pink skin patches shall appear anywhere on the dog and the nose must be solid black.

Disqualifications – Dogs not of an allowed color or white striping, patching, or spotting on the colored areas of the dog, except for the small white spot permitted on the chest of the black. The body coat color in salt and pepper and black and silver dogs fades out to light gray or silver white under the throat and across the chest. Between them there exists a natural body coat color. Any irregular or connecting blaze or white mark in this section is considered a white patch on the body, which is also a disqualification. Nose any color other than solid black.

The current approved breed standard for the Miniature Schnauzer can be viewed on the AKC website as well as the standards for all AKC breeds with full recognition and those eligible to compete in the Miscellaneous Class.

The revisions for the Miniature Schnauzer breed standard are indicated in bold. Sections that were not revised have not been included.

For those judges planning to apply for additional breeds in the future, the Evaluations and Observations received from the Field Staff are a major contributing factor in the decision made by the Judges Review Committee (JRC) on the breeds in which you have applied.

Without at least three current evaluations the JRC may not approve your application for additional breeds. If the JRC turns down an applicant you are then prohibited from reapplying for one year from the date denied. The evaluations that were used to grant you regular status may be used on your next application providing that application is within the next three (3) years. If you have not been permit for breeds within the three years prior to your application or if you have not had any Judging Evaluations from the AKC Executive Field staff in the same time frame, you are advised to request the Field Staff at any upcoming events to observe you in a breed with a sufficient entry in order to have current Evaluations on file.

The absence of recent Evaluations or Observations could result in the delay of the processing or the decline of your application by the Judges Review Committee.

Reminder

The American Kennel Club is pleased to announce that Sandra D’Andrea has been hired as an Executive Field Representative. D’Andrea joined the staff on November 19, 2012. She will be based in the Buffalo, New York area and cover shows in Western New York, Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and Michigan. “Sandra brings many years of experience as a distinguished breeder, professional handler and club member to the position, and I know that she will be a valuable addition to the shows in her territory,” said Patricia Proctor who heads the Conformation field staff. “The American Kennel Club is proud to welcome her to the staff.” D’Andrea has been in the sport for more than 30 years. She breeds Alaskan Malamutes under the prefix Nanuke and bred and owned the top-winning Malamute of all time. Additionally, D’Andrea has bred over 70 Champions, won Best in Show and Best Bred-By-Exhibitor in Show at the January 2006 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship with a breeder/owner-handled dog, and was named the 2006 AKC Working Group Breeder of the Year. She handled dogs for twenty years, working for a top professional handler and also showing dogs on her own as an all-breed handler. She has won Group Ones in all seven groups. D’Andrea is a member of the Alaskan Malamute Club of America and the Daughters of the American Revolution, and has served as co-chairperson for the Kennel Club of Niagara Falls show. D’Andrea graduated from the Nardin Academy, obtained an Associate’s degree in Engineering Science, and has studied geology at the SUNY in Buffalo.

It does happen on occasion, believe it or not. As an approved judge, permit or regular status, you are observed by a member of the Executive Field Staff and you do not agree with the assessment of your judging by the Field Representative, whether that report is for quality of judging (Judging Evaluation) or procedure (Judging Observation). Shocking as it may be, opinions will vary... and that is part of the process. The exercise of being observed by a member of the Executive Field staff does provide you an opportunity to discuss your judging (procedure or selection of awards). Procedure is traditionally defined and is objective, and thus the Judging Observation Report does not provide space for the judge to write comments regarding their judging on the day. The Evaluation Report is intrinsically different as the selection of awards is more subjective and two reasonable individuals can award the same class differently with neither being necessarily right or wrong.

It is important to understand that part of the evaluation process is the discussion. It is not only about awarding acceptable entries based upon breed specific characteristics, but also includes the ability to discuss the entry and how one prioritized. If the explanation does not coincide with the awards, by definition, the Judging Evaluation Report will not be positive. An example of such would be one who states in their selection of winners and reserve in Great Danes that great emphasis was placed upon outline and proportion. However the winners and reserve were much longer than tall and extremely low on leg. Hence, the discussion did not match the results. To put it is simple terms, one needs to walk the walk and talk the talk. It is not a matter of the Executive Field Representative and the Judge agreeing on the order of the placements; it is a matter of the placements being consistent with the breed standard, based upon breed characteristics and those placements being consistent with the prioritization of salient breed characteristics. The Evaluation form requires that both the Field Representative and the Judge provide comments for any Evaluation above or below a “Meets Expectations.” This is your opportunity to provide additional insight into your selections in that breed. It also provides you the opportunity to explain or refute any concerns that may have been expressed by the Executive Field Representative in the Evaluation Report. This is the chance to provide an explanation if warranted. Forwarding one to Judging Operations after the fact, several days or weeks later, is not appropriate nor will be considered.

Once the judging is complete, the discussion has taken place, the Field Representative has completed their portion of the form and the Judge has written their comments, the evaluation is complete. The Field Representative will sign the bottom and the Judge is REQUIRED to sign and date as well. Signing does not state that one agrees, but that the evaluation was completed and they have received a copy. As the three-part forms were eliminated and the staff has been supplied with scanners, “has received a copy” may also refer to the evaluation has been completed and the judge has indicated to the Executive Field Representative they may email their evaluation to them once they have had the opportunity to scan it. You do have the right to receive the copy on the day, however please be advised that you may be then subjected to the availability of the Field Representative’s schedule to set-up their laptop and scan the document as they are required to forward a copy to the AKC to be placed in your judging file.

On occasion, situations may arise where a discussion may not take place at the event and the Judge has the opportunity to sign the form at the show. Example of this would be that the permit judge either failed to locate the Field Representative before or after their judging, an unforeseen bench hearing that rendered the Field Representative unavailable or procedural issues (judge’s book) that may not have been discovered until after the judge has left. In those cases, a copy of the report will be forwarded to you by the Executive Field Representative with the instruction to sign and return to the AKC. You do have a right to knowledge of the reports in your file that are reviewed in consideration of your regular status request or when you may apply for additional breeds. The requirement to sign confirms to the AKC that you are aware of the applicable report. Refusing to sign will not result in that report not being considered. It will only display a failure to comply with AKC policy.

Do not forget, when one applies to the AKC for judging approval, they sign their application certifying they are familiar with the American Kennel Club’s Rules, Regulations, Policies and Guidelines for Conformation Dog Show Judges and agree to abide by them of which the Judging Approval Process is part. All judges are subject to the parameters defined within the Board approved Judging Approval Process which includes Field Staff Observations.

The A-Z on the Four-to-SixOne of the new exhibitor initiatives implemented by the Events Department is the Four-to-Six Month Beginner Puppy Competition. Approved by the Board of Directors at its October 2011 meeting, this competition can be held in conjunction with AKC Conformation shows or AKC Open Shows. As an increasing number of all-breed, group and specialty clubs are requesting to conduct a Four-to-Six with their event, we felt it would be wise to address judging regulations pertaining to the Four-to-Six.

n Judges for the Four-to-Six Month Puppy Competition are required to have an AKC conformation judge’s number. This includes an individual approved to judge any breed or approved to judge Open Shows. This does not include individuals ONLY approved to judge Junior Showmanship.

n Judges assigned regular classes may judge the Four-to-Six Month Puppy competition ONLY if it does not interfere or delay the judging of regular classes, Groups or Best in Show.

n The 30 days and 200 mile restriction does not apply to the Four-to-Six Month Puppy competition.

n Visiting judges are not eligible to judge Four-to-Six Month Beginner Puppy competition.

n Individuals who judge the Four-to-Six Month Puppy competition in breeds they are not approved to judge may include that experience in their letter of synopsis if they should choose to apply for that breed in the future.

n Judges of the Four-to-Six are bound by the same exhibitor restriction policy for sweepstakes/futurity judges outlined in the Rules, Policies and Guidelines for Conformation Dog Show Judges. “Effective January 1, 2009 Sweepstake/Futurity judges may not exhibit on day(s) they judge. Sweepstake/Futurity judges will continue to be allowed to exhibit the day before and the day after the event they judge. A multi-day specialty is considered one event, and the restriction will apply for the duration of the event.”

n Judges should allow the exhibitor to open their dog’s mouth for examination. If the judge finds it necessary to open the mouth they should disinfect their hands prior to examining other dogs.

n Expectation for the speed of judging to be 20 dogs per hour.

n Male puppies without two fully descended testicles are not be disqualified or excused but the judge’s book must describe the condition and Certificate of Merit points must be withheld.

n Dogs with breed standard disqualifications should not be excused but may not receive placements.

n Dogs with age related disqualifications such as color (as related to age), height, teeth, etc. may receive awards in the Four-to-Six Month Puppy classes.

n Dogs must be excused for attacking a person or other dogs.

n Dogs brought into the ring bandaged, taped, glued or stitched anywhere including ears or tail are not permitted to compete. They are to be excused from judging but, at the judge’s discretion, may return after the tape or bandage is removed.

No matter what you judge, one breed or all breeds, I would like to suggest that you take a refresher course in the proper procedure in the use of the wicket and/or the scale. Some judges just do not have many assignments. Some judges are judging every weekend. No matter the scenario, I have found that should the occasion arise, judges are often not adequately prepared to conduct a proper measurement or weighing and I do believe that it comes down to simple lack of use.

Obviously this only applies if you judge breeds with a height or weight as a disqualification in the breed standard or with height or weight restrictions as eligibility for a class. And, thanks to the internet with the high availability of rules and regulations, our exhibitors are a very savvy group of individuals who, even if they are not breeders, recognize that you are judging their exhibits against a breed standard which might contain such limitations. They also know that should they choose, and if the situation arises, they can protest the height or weight of other entries in their class.

When a protest occurs, whether you wanted to assess the dog’s height or weight yourself, it now has been taken out of your hands. You must comply

with the protest as long as it is made before the last entry in the class has been individually examined and gaited. If you haven’t measured or weighed a dog in some time would you be rusty? Is it like riding a bike? Exhibitors have paid an entry for your opinion and you are expected to be an expert. Are you prepared to give a complete, valued, proper evaluation of their dog, which at times might include a measurement or weighing?

Judging Operations would like to remind you that the AKC Field Representatives are there to help you with anything. This includes a refresher course. Should you find yourself questioning the possibility of a wicket or a scale in your hands and should you have the slightest doubt as to their use, please do not hesitate to contact a Field Rep. We will be more than happy to give you that refresher course. As an AKC judge, it is your responsibility to follow AKC rules and regulations and the proper use of a wicket and a scale is part of that responsibility. So, the next time you have a moment, if you have any doubt at all, please find a Field Rep prior to entering your ring. Show the exhibitors that you are an expert and care about preserving their breed’s standard. v

Earlier this year, the Board of Directors approved a modification to the criteria for those seeking AKC approval to judge Junior

Showmanship classes. In the past, the requirement for one to apply for All-Breed Junior Showmanship Status was identical to those seeking

approval on Limited Status. As the expectation of knowledge in various breeds is discernibly different between the two approval statuses, it was

determined it should be reflective through the criteria for individuals to apply. The current requirements for those seeking approval for all-breed or limited

JS status are provided below. All information regarding Junior Showmanship approval is available in the Judging Resource Center on the AKC website.

Junior's Corner

Junior Showmanship All-Breed applicants must meet THREE of the following requirements and pass an Open Book Exam to be eligible to apply. Junior Showmanship Limit applicants must meet TWO of the following requirements and pass an Open Book Exam to be eligible to apply:

• Applicant previously was a Junior Showmanship Handler.• Applicant has Judged Junior Showmanship at least 3 times at AKC All Breed

Sanctioned Matches• Applicant is the Parent of a current or former Junior Showmanship handler.• Applicant is currently or was previously a Professional Handler.• Applicant attended a seminar on judging of Junior Showmanship in the last 24

months sponsored by the AKC Judging Operations Department.**• Taught All-Breed Handling classes

**Attendance at a Junior Showmanship Seminar may count as two of the requirements.

Junior Showmanship Applicants that meet the criteria to apply will be required to submit a $25 non-refundable processing fee and be interviewed by an Executive Field Representative prior to being considered by the Judges Review Committee for approval. Applicants will be expected to describe during their interview an understanding of Judging Regulations as related to Junior Showmanship classes. All-Breed Junior Showmanship applicants will be expected to indicate knowledge of breed-specific presentation and examination for various breeds during their interview. Knowledge of breed-specific presentation in various breeds will be required for applicants previously approved for Junior Showmanship-Limited status requesting All-Breed Junior Showmanship status, as well as Conformation Judges currently applying for breeds and All-Breed Junior Showmanship. Applicants who are unsuccessful in confirming this knowledge during their interview may not be approved for All-Breed Junior Showmanship and an interviewer may recommend amending the applicant’s request to Junior Showmanship – Limited Status.
