a word from the chief instructor

Spring has well and truly arrived, and with spring comes our gradings, train-ing camp, all rank sessions and more. First I would like to welcome all our new members. White belts are our next black belts (in 3-4 years that is). We hope you enjoy yourself while training, remember we are here to assist you as much as possible. I have noted the increase in numbers at the Kallangur class of late, a lot of young men whom are about the same age as myself when I first started. Well done to Brett, the standard of these students has been excellent. I look forward to seeing your full potential, stretch hard and attend every class you can folks. And also to all the new members at all the other clubs, we look forward to meeting you all soon.

A couple of weeks ago we held an out door training session on the Brisbane River at New Farm Park. It felt more like summer than spring with the day being in the early 30’s temp wise. mentum as possible travelling upwards. You generate momentum by moving your body mass upwards in a short pe-riod of time. To do this, bend your knees and jump of the balls of your feet, tucking your knees to your chest in one ex-plosive motion. At the same time, throw your arms and even your head upwards to help gain extra height. Squat Jump Tucks are an excellent way to strengthen your legs muscles allowing them to be more explosive so you can

jump higher.

Jumping high allows you to perform the advanced techniques like jumping double and tri-ple kicks as well as spin-ning techniques like the 5400 spin hook or even the 7200. Remember the last round of the tourna-ment is just around the

corner and jumping kicks are a great way of beating your opponents guard and scoring an easy 3 points.

Joseph and Robert Sandona

Hanging High The key to executing successful jump-ing techniques is getting enough hang-time to fully perform the kick with good technique. In order to do this you need to jump as high as possible to allow yourself enough time to fully execute your technique and land back in a spar-ring stance so you are less vulnerable to counter attacks.

How to improve the height of your jump:

The first step is to create as much mo-

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who bought tickets in our raffle for their generosity. Without all of your help we couldn’t purchase the equipment to provide the high standard of training that our students deserve.

The winning ticket was A61 which belonged to Jenny Klerks, a mother from the Redcliffe club. Con-gratulations Jenny and family, I believe you probably took a few knives home with you, left there from the disgruntled non winners.

After 3 years of hard work we now have a great area of rubber matting to train on. (see pic)

Thanking you all very much on behalf of the Banyo Breakers

Finally the announcement is made about this years social day. After a lot of deliberating over what to do this year, it has been decided to have a Family Fun Day, with activities and games for all IMT members and their families!

This years event will be held on the 21st November directly after the training session at Bribie Island. We ask that you bring along any and all fun beach games that you may have (Frisbees, footballs etc) and we will supply the rest of the activities for everyone. Of course it is on Bribie, so don’t forget your togs and towel.

For lunch we ask that you bring a plate to share as well as any drinks you would like for yourself. It promises to be a great day and we can’t wait to celebrate a fantastic year with the IMT family!

Next year will also be a big year for Black Belt gradings, it is with pride that we announce the eligibility to grade for their 2nd Degree Black Belts of Mike Griffith, Brenton Dodds, Jack Wellington, Jacinta Forbes, Ryan Forbes, Daniel Sgualdino and David Sgualdino.

Also is the eligibility of Joseph Sandona, Robert Sandona and Daniel Jays for their 3rd Degree Black Belts. These will be events not to be missed or forgotten by anyone lucky enough to witness them. Good luck to all with your preparation!

With Camp coming up in a months time, we would like to get eve-ryone well prepared for some really different sessions. If you own any hand weights or dumbbells bring them along for the Chief Instructors weight training sessions. Running Shoes, extra towels and old casual clothes suitable for training will also be required.

Camp time is always a good time to invest in a 2nd uniform, we have plenty of stock available, so let your instructor know if you require one. Casual shirts are also still available in most sizes.

Lastly regarding the camp, you may have a family member or more attending with you, encourage them to get involved in some of the running, weight or fitness sessions, who knows, they may even get a taste for training and do the whole camp!

Always practice your self de-fence moves hard, fast, and with one aim in mind, ‘TO SURVIVE AND SUCCEED’.

Don’t give in to pain and en-deavour to reverse a bad situa-tion. Always be aware of your surroundings, and watchful of people around you. Stay in con-trol and focus hard as one small mistake could be your undoing.

Self defence is a very important and one of the main reasons we train in MARTIAL ARTS.

All aspects of our training are learning tools for strong self defence. Fitness training is a vital area, practicing patterns gives us a system that helps to flow your moves and stances, set sparring for focusing your attacks, all go towards helping you coordinate your body for any situation that may arrive.

Always remember, don’t try to get too technical. Keep it strong and simple, don’t get cocky. Keep it cool, calm and never panic. Trust your in-structors and believe in your-self and you will do well.

Cheers!

John Clancey-Jones

What's the best way of testing your patterns for accuracy? You may think that you can do your patterns well, but how well?. Executing your patterns well depends upon many things, be-ginning with the essential accuracy of stances, kicks and hand tech-niques. Power, pace and posture fol-low closely. It all starts in ensuring that you have mastered the basics. Demonstrating these to your instructor and other black belts is an important step - before incorrect techniques be-come habits that are then often diffi-cult to break. During training sessions (when appropriate) seek someone who models good technique and imi-tate his or her movements and posi-tions. When you are practising your pattern, be it at home or at a training session, your muscle memory is de-

veloping whether you are executing the pattern correctly or otherwise. So be careful that you're accurate from the moment you are taught a new pat-tern.

Please remember that a pattern is not just a series of movements. Every action has a purpose. In your mind you need to play make-believe and visualize multiple attackers that are much bigger than you and are really trying to hurt you. The threat, in your mind, should be real and the execu-tion of your pattern should reflect that - a real life-death situation. Whether you are performing your pattern out the back yard, at a training session, tournament or grading, make the pat-tern a real response. Go hard, be accurate in every movement, every

technique. I'm sure that all instructors would agree, a pattern executed with sheer determination, focus, strength, correct posture, pace and accuracy is a wonderful sight to behold. A stu-dent's attitude and commitment to-wards developing the highest (personal) standard of patterns is clearly evident when it is performed. If you're not sure what others see in you when you are per-forming a pattern, get someone to film you and watch it (again and again), reflect upon it, and grow from it.

It's all up to you.

Training Hard, staying focused in class and practice, practice, practice has helped the Kallangur club take a commanding lead in the points total after the second round of Tournaments. Thanks and congratulations to all of those who competed and helped boost the chances of us winning the perpetual trophy for 2009. Having said that there is still one round left and every-one’s support will be needed to keep us in front, so I encourage all the students to get involved for them-selves and the Kallangur club for the last round in No-vember.

Good luck to all undertaking this grading, do your best and give 100%.

Also training extremely hard this year is Peter Voer-manek from the senior class who will be going for his Black Belt promotion in December. It’s encouraging for all the other students to look at and see the training and dedication required to get ready for Black Belt. All the best to Peter who I’m sure will be fighting fit and ready come December.

Also a big welcome to all the new students who have joined us recently in the junior and senior classes, it’s good to see some fresh and willing faces getting amongst the action and training hard.

Breaking Technique of the Season. 3600 Jump Back Kick When performing this kick you must jump off the leg you are kicking with, this will ensure you get the full 360 degree rotation, Jump high, load your knee back, spot the target and extend through aiming for the centre of the target.

Difficulty – Very Hard

What an atmosphere! Round 2 was our biggest tournament yet, with over 50 competitors, some experiencing their first tournament. The Kallangur club really made an impact with their decoration of the hall with motivational pictures and posters. I’m sure at round 3 there will be more clubs vying for wall space to help support their fellow team mates.

Once competition started there was a lot of focus and concentration for the patterns divisions. A stunning upset win by Joshua Burns from Bribie kicked us off in division 1, but competitive wins from Kallangur’s Jake, Aleisha, Max and Daniel saw their club to a healthy points lead as well as extend their own points tally. Will from Redcliffe rounded out the winners column, but there was some very close scores in all divisions with only half a point separating most competitors.

It was fantastic to see so many teams competing in the demonstrations division. With 10 teams to entertain us it was cer-tainly the largest division we’ve ever had and re-affirms our decision to split next years event into two divisions. Teams demonstrations are a great way to learn new and more advanced techniques and this was definitely obvious with a lot of lower grade students demonstrating moves only expected at brown or black belt levels! The standard of demonstrations has improved so much since it was introduced, as everyone gets more experience, the competition gets closer and closer to judge, so keep up the great work. After the dust had settled and the teams awarded their medals, we were treated to an impromptu demonstration by Joe, Daniel, Robert and John. With barely over an hours practice the night before, it was inspiring for everyone to see the black belts in action.

After an amazing lunch thanks to the Banyo club (and a bit of assistance from Redcliffe), the Black Belts got straight into the action with the junior and senior divisions giving all spectators quite a show. A special mention to Jacinta from Banyo who had to back up for 4 straight fights, a really tough ask, and she had

the whole crowd behind her with enthusiasm and sympathy.

Hopefully all competitors felt safe in the new protective equipment that they helped us purchase, thanks to everyone’s out-standing efforts in fund raising at the beginning of the year. There were a lot of outstanding spars in round 2 from every com-petitor, twins Tiana and Talei from Banyo took 1st and 2nd in the monstrous division 2 with some excellent sparring. Kallan-gur’s Jake, Rachel, Jacinta and Peter extended their points tally with strong wins in their divisions. As always, the Pee Wee division caused all who gazed to grin from ear to ear as they watched these pocket dynamos show us how much fun sparring really is! With Round 3 just around the corner, and the Grand Champion Trophies to be decided, we look forward to an even bigger turn out for 2009! SEE YOU THEN!

with a massive hall (to seat 700) being built at my school. Whilst I am not sure whether I will be here next year, I know that Mike and the team will be making full use of it. The training session times will most probably change, but we will advise everyone of this as things are finalised for 2010.

In closing, everyone at Bribie wishes Mike (instructor of the senior class on Bribie) all the very best for the final weeks of his arduous and very long university studies as an Aerospace Avionics Engi-neer. Having to balance instructing with everyday life is something that can be difficult at times; something faced by all instructors.

I will be back in Nepal by the time the next grading comes around, so I wish to extend my congratulations to everyone for their individ-ual achievements throughout the year. IMT really is an out-standing organisation in every respect, so keep training hard and aiming high.

Namaste from Bribie Island.

Firstly, congratulations to everyone from ALL clubs who performed so well at the recent tournament. It was a great event in every way. Thankyou to all the families who came along to support their clubs and individual competitors. The Bribie club rates itself as quiet achievers but have been doing well at the tournaments. We do like to quietly make our presence felt when we can, however we may just slip under the radar when the 'big boys' aren't looking.

Our senior class is comprised of teenagers who are currently in the thick of their final years at high-school with the associ-ated exams etc.. impacting on training. We commend them on continuing their training when they can and keeping their sights set on the goals (including studies and Taek-wondo) that they have set for themselves. These efforts will bring their own rewards, so hang in there, guys.

Our training facilities will be hugely expanded next year
