Northwest Region September Meeting by Bill Robertson

About 30 people turned out for the September meeting that was hosted by Jerry and Tycee Grice at their '

home forge in Wakulla county. Although rain had been predicted the weather proved to be the usual North Florida (hotter than it should be for this time of year) lund of day. Four forge stations were set up, three inside the shop and one (captained by Jim Croft) outside, to work on a metal art project designed by Jerry Grice. By the end of the day, and through the efforts of all, a beautiful decorative wall sconce with an aquatic motif was &&, painted, and made ready for the auction next month at FABA's annual conference. Two other forge stations captained by Bill Robertson and Patty Draper. worked on a log holder which will also be donated to the Auction. Tycee as usual served up a super lunch. Several trucks provided for some tool selling and swapping.

We would like to encourage everyone who comes to these regional meetings to bring those old tools and thugs that your not using. What is junk to you might be treasure to someone else, plus it helps the beginner get some of the necessary tools to start with.

Northwest Region November Meeting by Clyde Payton, Northwest Region Program Coordinator

The Northwest Region will hold its November regional meeting on the second Saturday of November, the 11th 1995. This meeting will be at the home shop of Dr. E. Charlton (Skeeter) and Lou Prather in Tallahassee, Florida. (See map on page 3). Everyone is welcome and lunch will be provided. You do not need to bring a portable forge nor tooling, but you may if you wish. You =encouraged to bring stuff for tailgate sales and for show-and-tell.

The program will be a series of daylong demonstrations by Mr. Roger Stuart of Crescent C@, Florida. Roger will demonstrate "Box joints & other Blacksmithmg Pearls & Tidbits. I for one, have always wanted to know a real good technique for constructing a Box Joint in a squeeze tool. So, come on and Roger will show us!

Shop Talk Submitted by Pete Brandenburg Reprinted from the National Ornamental Metal Museum newsletter.

Puff went poof Our beloved shop cat, Puff, who spends much of her life sleeping beneath a coal forge in the Smithy, recently ignited. She was extinguished by intern, Lewis Meyer, who put her out in more ways than one with a can of water from a nearby slack tub. Puff relocated to her other favorite location, the sunny window sill, and resumed her nap with quite indignation. Puffs popularity with visitors may soon win her a place in one of Memphis Magazine's "who's who" lists.

Put patinas

on metal REPRINTED FROM THE NEWSLETTER OF THE BLACKSMITHS ASSOCIATION OF MISSOURI BAM JAN - FEB 1995

by Rand Esser

T he patinas demonstrated at the March 12 meeting were copper

sulfate solution, Black Topaz, and Rusty Red.

I mix my own copper sulfate solu- tion by mixing copper sulfate crystals with water, a little at a time, until the water will no longer dissolve the cop- per sulfate. Copper sulfate is available at Southern States stores.

Black Topaz and Rusty Red are sold by Sur-Fin Chemical Corpora- tion. Sur-Fin will send you a finish kit including seven six ounce bottles of their finishes for $50 (they also sell patinas for other metals). Larger sizes- from one to fifty-gallons are available.

These finishes result in a variety of effects depending on strength of the solution, reaction time, relative humid- ity, temperature, surface texture, and type of top coating.

The Rusty Red and copper sulfate solution create similar effects. The Rusty red seems to be a bit more red and the copper sulfate is a bit more orange. I prefer the copper sulfate solution. It is more beautiful and less expensive than the Rusty Red.

Tips for patinas on steel The surface to be finished must be

completely clean. Remove all scale by sandblasting or wire brushing. Differ- ent surface textures will create differ- ent results. Sand blasted surfaces tend to be more dull and require a shorter reaction time. Wire brushed surfaces will be shinier, but require a longer reaction time. I sandblast first to remove the scale and then wire brush to create a shiny surface.

Remove all grease, oil, and, dirt with mineral spirits. Surface must be white glove clean for best results. Dif- ferent concentrations of the finish solutions give different results. Sur- Fin recommends diluting the Black Topaz 1 : 10 with water. I have used the Black Topaz at 1 :5 with a very brown /black result. Different reaction times give different results. I usually leave the solutions on for just a few minutes. The Black Topaz ranges from a jet black with a short reaction time to bluish, greenish, black with longer reaction times to brownhlack with very long reaction times. The Rusty Red and copper sulfate solutions range from a light copper plating effect to light rust to a dark crusty rust depend- ing upon reaction time.

Some interesting effects can be cre- ated by using two or more finishes on the same piece. The Rusty Red and copper sulfate solution will work on top of the Black Topaz finish. The Black Topaz does not seem to work on top of the others. I often begin with the Black Topaz and drizzle, drip, or brush a pattern on specific areas of the surface, leaving other areas bare. I then allow the Black Topaz solution to react until it is dry.

Then I come back and coat the entire piece with the Black Topaz solution and quickly rinse the piece in water to stop the reaction. The areas treated first will have a different tone than the areas treated later. I then come back over the piece with the Rusty Red and/or copper sulfate solu- tion and brush, drip , drop or drizzle it in specific areas to create coppery or rusty highlights. The entire piece is then thoroughly rinsed with waterto stop the reaction.

Top coating Once you have stopped the reaction

by rinsing with water, allow the piece

I

to air dry or speed up the process by I

heating it with a torch. At this point the piece is not very pretty. You will a not know what the piece will ultimate- ly look like until you apply a top coat.

I usually heat the piece with a torch until it is barely hot and then apply wax with a lint free cloth. I have heard that linseed oil also works well. At this point the patina will reveal itself in its final state. By applying more wax and rubbing I can usually remove some of the more rusty spots revealing coppery areas. Additional coatings of wax will

I create a shinier finish with more depth.

G

Safety These chemicals are poisonous.

They will irritate your skin and eyes. Wear rubber gloves, goggles, protec- tive clothing, and a respirator. Read the labels on these products and dis- pose of properly. Keep them away from your kids.

Persistence It takes time and experimentation to ,

get good results with these chemicals.

7 Your finishes are likely to look dif-

ferent fiom mine due to the many vari- i

ables involved. I am continually exper- imenting with different finishes on metals, steel in particular. I would like to compile a data base of information on this subject to share with other metalworkers.

If you have information that you would like to share please let me know. Rand Esser 302 Glascock Street Raleigh, North Carolina 27604 or send e-mail to: [email protected]

If you are FABA member who is forging iron for profit, you may be interested in the new blacksmith referral directory being created by FABA. The directory will be a separate listing included with the FABA membership directory which is published each year. This directory will iden* FABA members who are accepting commissioned blacksmith projects and the types of work they do. All of us have been asked by friends or acquantances to make them something in iron but we don't have the time, interest or expertise to take on the work.. Hopefully, by the use of this directo~y we can direct these people to a FABA member who would welcome the job. The understanding would be not to vouch for the quality of anyone's work but simply have way to refer work to those who want it. So if you are interested in having your name included in the next directory either fill out the form below or jot the information down on a post card and send it to me as soon as possible. The deadline for being included in the next directory is November 10, 1995.

John C. Campbell Folk School Annual Blacksmith Auction T

Rt. 1. Box 14A Brasstown NC 28902 704-837-2775

August 18,1995

Dear Friend,

The Folk School's annual Blacksmith Auction is coming soon! On November 11, 1995 the Folk School will host the monthly meeting of the Appalachian and the North Carolina chapters of ABANA, to be followed by an auction of ironwork and other handcrafted items, tools and more in the Keith House Community Room.

A full day of activities is scheduled, beginning with a blacksmithing demonstration by Bob Becker. Bob is an equine veterinarian with his own blacksmithing studio in Oxford, MI. He was a demonstrator for the 1990 ABANA conference in Alfred, NY, and the Quad State Round Up in Tipp City, OH. Bob has taught at the Folk School for several years.

Bob's demonstration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and go until 11:OO. As in the past, our dedicated lutchen staff will serve lunch at 12:15, for $6.40 per person. If you plan to join us for lunch, please let us know in advance by calling 704-837-9571 (Dining Hall). We will also take lunch orders at 9:00 a.m. before the demonstration begins. The afternoon will begin with a preview of items at 1:00 p.m., and the acction, run by blacksmith and "Auctioneer Extraordinaire," Col. Tim Ryan, will start at 2:00 p.m.

Proceeds from the auction help maintain the Folk School's shop and blacksmithing program-this is your chance to support both. You can do this by donating ironwork, tools, or any other hand crafted item to the Blacksmith Auction. Please send your items to John C. Campbell Folk School, Rt. 1, Box 144, Brasstown, NC 28902 by November 3, 1995. Receiving items in advance is a great help in preparing for the auction. If you have any questions please call the Folk School at 1-800-365-5724.

This will be a wonderful opportunity to purchase some beautiful gifts for Christmas, items for the home, or tools for the shop while helping the Folk School as well.

Sincerely, -

Ruth Truett an Davidson Instruction Manager
