COACHES CORNER

Swim meets are the best test of improvement. It’s

a chance for us to show off our skills and as the

summer goes on, what we have learned. Besides

stroke technique in the water, we also learn

beneficial skills outside of the water… 1. Goal setting and achieving goals – A

goal can be a time or to do a flip turn for the

first time in a freestyle race. It’s up to you to

push yourself to reach your race goals. 2. Set new limits – with each goal, we push

ourselves further than we have before, outside

of our comfort zone to a new level. 3. Handle disappointment – You want to

finally have a legal breaststroke, but get

disqualified. Or gained time when you wanted

to drop time. Whenever a race doesn’t go our

way, it’s a learning opportunity on how to race

better next time and shake it off. 4. Sportsmanship – Shaking hands at the

end of a race, staying in the water for all the

swimmers, cheering for teammates and

positive talk in the clerk of course are all

examples of sportsmanship that help make

swimming fun. 5. Hard work pays off – if you put your

best effort into every practice, your best effort

will get better every day and you’ll see your

time drop on Saturday.

I can't wait for you all to keep showing off your

skills this Saturday at Victory Lakes. I'm so proud

of all your effort so far this summer. Go Breakers! ~ Coach Lauren

THE CAROL TAYLOR VOLUNTEER AWARD

Summer swim would not be possible without

the hard work and dedication of numerous

volunteers who contribute their time and effort

to make our OBB season a success. Each week

Timers, Stroke and Turn Officials, Announcers,

Scorers, and numerous other folks behind the

scenes combine their time and talent to make

each meet run smoothly. It is these volunteers

who truly make the Breakers great. Breaker

Mom Carol Taylor exemplified the very best of

the Breaker volunteer spirit. As an original

member of the team, she participated in every

meet running the OBB Clerk of Course for over

10 years. Even when ill with cancer, she was

poolside helping wherever possible and

inspired everyone around her. This annual

award will be presented at our end of year

ceremony to the OBB adult volunteer who best

represents the spirit of our team. Please think

about a person you feel has lent to the success

of the team by volunteering. The Breaker

Swim Team Executive Board will review all

nominations and jointly select the awardee.

Executive Board Members and Coaches are

exempt. Nominations are due by 5:00p.m on

Monday, July 23rd. A written nomination form

must accompany the nomination – a link to the

form can be found on the main OBB website

page.

OBB SENIORS Several members of our Breaker Family recently graduated from high school and were celebrated as they swam their last events at our pool. We wish them all the best as they begin the next chapter in their lives –

WHIT BENSON - Whit has been a Breaker since he was 5 years old. Back when he used to attend practice, he was a team record holder in backstroke and butterfly. Whit played baseball and golf at Woodbridge Senior High School. He was a 4-year letterman on the Varsity Swim team, advancing to regionals 3 of those years, and was also a regional qualifier representing WSHS on the inaugural Prince William County Dive team. Whit is a lifelong Boy Scout and earned the BSA Rank of Eagle Scout in 2016. Whit is a magna cum laude graduate from both the AP Scholars and Project Lead the Way Specialty Programs. He will be attending the University of South Carolina in the fall. Whit will be pursuing a degree in Sports Management in hopes of one day managing an MLB Ballpark. Go Cocks!

JACK BRENNAN - Jack has been on OBB since 2006. He graduated from Woodbridge Senior High school magna cum laude as an AP scholar and Project Lead-the-way scholar. While at Woodbridge he earned multiple honors as a member of the Varsity lacrosse team in both conference and regional play. He will be attending Colorado State University on an Air Force ROTC scholarship to study mechanical engineering. Jack’s favorite OBB memory is the friendly competition he had swimming with Sam Lyons across the years!

SAM LYONS - Sam has been a Breaker since he was 6 years old. He is a graduate of Woodbridge High School where he was in the Project Lead-the-way Program and played varsity lacrosse. Sam is an Eagle Scout and attended both Northern Tier and Sea Base High Adventure Camps. Sam will attend Belmont Abbey College in Charlotte, North Carolina where he will play Division II lacrosse and major in business.

MELANIE WALLACE - Melanie has been a part of the breaker family for 10 years. She swam for Woodbridge Senior High School for 2 years and was a captain her senior year. Melanie is honored to be

attending High Point University in the fall on a Presidential Fellows Scholarship. She will study athletic training and biomechanics in their 5 year Masters program. She is planning on swimming at High Point & will also be managing the D1 Boys lacrosse Team. Melanie wishes the breakers good luck and is very happy to have gotten so close to the girls over the past year :) LET’S GO BREAKERS!!!

BECOME A BREAKER BOARD MEMBER Enjoying your family’s experience this summer and willing to get more involved with the team?! If so, please consider becoming a member of the OBB Executive Board! Being a member of our board is a great opportunity to get more involved with the team and our Breaker community. The board is made up of the following positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Team Wear Coordinator, Social Coordinator, Concessions Coordinator, Fundraising Coordinator, Meet Manager, Communications Coordinator, Ribbons Coordinator and PWSL Representative. Serving on the Breaker Board is very rewarding. If you are interested in learning more, want to run for a position, or have questions, please feel free to get in touch with Stephanie Martin at 703/987-7895 or [email protected] or simply talk to any of the current board members for more information on their positions and how you can get involved!

FLOCK YOUR FRIENDS!

The flamingo flocking fundraiser, an OBB favorite, is going strong! Many families have already awoken to yard full of blue and green flamingos, and for just $25, you can join in the fun and surprise a friend by sending a flock to their yard! Email [email protected] to flock a friend today. Not interested in being "flocked"? Insurance is now available! For $25, you can be sure you won’t wake up to a front yard full of flamingos. See Courtney Fetchko or Alison Matys at practice with flocking questions or requests. COMMIT OR DECLINE PLEASE

***Please either commit or decline your swimmer for the last 2 meets of the season!***

Let the coaches know if their child will be swimming this weekend against Victory Lakes and in next weekend’s Black Division Championship meet ASAP via our OBB Team Unify site (http://www.obebreakers.org/).
