Student Led Conferences. The great community sup-port that Kamiakin re-ceives is one of the key elements that sets us apart from other schools.
The ultimate community involvement, of course, is Commencement. We look forward to sharing this special day with all the members of the class of 2015 as well as all that have supported them through their journey. Commencement is on June 6th at the Toyota Center. Doors will open at 11:00.
While graduation is a cel-ebration for every student and their family, our grad-uates represent our com-munity supported focus on high standards and expectations which re-sults in individuals who are prepared to move for-ward and be successful in life.
There are several indica-tors of high performing schools. As we look at Kamiakin High school we are proud to say that many of these indicators describe us!
Having a clear and shared focus is the first indicator of a high per-forming school. All of our efforts at Kamiakin are aimed at getting students ready for college, ready for work and ready to be citizens.
The second indicator is high standards and ex-pectations for all students. We push our students to take the most rigorous classes that they can han-dle and encourage all stu-dents to take full academ-ic loads and challenge themselves. This May, 521 Advanced Place-ment tests will be taken by Kamiakin students. This is an incredible aca-demic feat and represents a huge investment of time and energy by students who choose these rigor-ous classes. One way we are celebrating our stu-dents is by having the
Senior Awards Assembly on May 27th. This will be a gathering for the entire school and community to come and celebrate the academic accomplish-ments of the class of 2015.
Collaboration and com-munication between staff is another indicator. Kami-akin has had a total of 8 early release dates dedi-cated to the staff improv-ing instruction and work-ing together. Learning about
Another indicator is hav-ing curriculum, instruction and assessment aligned with state standards. The most visible indicator of this is how Kamiakin stu-dents performed on the HSPE this spring. We will be getting those results back in early June and look forward to seeing how our students per-formed.
A high level of community involvement is another characteristic. Last month, 95% of our stu-dents were represented at

B R A V E D E E D S
Attendance Reminder When your student is going to miss school for family activities don’t forget to have them do a pre-excuse to be excused. Send them to the Attend-ance Office with a note explaining the dates to be gone. We will give them a pre-excuse form to have completed by their teachers and returned to us to be excused. Without doing this procedure out of town and family events will not be excused.
ALSO -
If your student is going to miss finals they must have a pre-excuse com-pleted and approved by the principal three weeks before finals. Have your student take a note to the attendance office to acquire a pre-excuse form to complete the procedure.

Kamiakin Computer Science Students Winners of the Washington State
The Youth Apps Challenge is an exciting competition for middle and high school students across Washington, offering
them a chance to design and build apps for tablets and smartphones! Teams of up to five students were eligible to partici-
pate, with prizes that include tablets, visits to local technology companies, and more.
Vincent Gizzarelli, Jordan Blum, and Zachary Sylvester were a winning team and will be attending the Eastern Washington
awards event at WSU Tri-Cities on Saturday May 2nd. Vince and Jordan are in Mr. Reppe’s 2nd period Computer Science
Class. They used MIT’s App Inventor to design and conceptualize their program, and created a YouTube elevator pitch
video explaining the app. Their app is a futuristic concept that scans rooms in your house or workplace and records indi-
vidual objects into a database. If you lose an item, a scan looking for the size/shape of the object will find and display the
location of the lost item using an augmented reality view from your smart phone or tablet.

Kamiakin’s Chapter of the National Honor Society Spring 2015
Valerie Feth-Advisor
The National Honor Society has had a busy year! Our club, which members are invited to join
during the start of their junior and/or senior year, is not only an academic organization that honors
students with a 3.6 GPA (cumulative) or higher, but is a club committed to giving back and serving
others. We began our year with our yearly Induction Ceremony, welcoming 58 new students to
our membership! During December we caroled at Riverton Assisted Living Facilities, where our
members handed out homemade cards, sang their hearts out, and visited with the residents. We
have many talented students who love to use their abilities to entertain others, so we also had pi-
ano music to entertain the residents as well. We packed and sent multiple boxes to Operation
Christmas Child, which were filled with the donations provided by club members. We had so
many donations that we ended up not only exceeding the number of boxes we filled in the past,
but donated a lot of leftover supplies to Bethel Church to add to other boxes they were filling. We
also started a new program called “One Tribe Lunchtime.” On specific days throughout the
month, members seek out students to sit with and talk to. We have had many positive stories
shared about making connections and helping students feel welcome and accepted. Another
event we held for the second year was a Valentine Party for our Life Skills class. Students not
only brought treats, cards, and decorations, but spent time visiting with these students and getting
to know them. Additionally we have provided tutoring, babysitting, dog walking, and have also
participated in various school-related events alongside ASB. There are a variety of other upcom-
ing end-of-the-year events such as another visit to one of the assisted living facilities, where our
students will put on a variety show, sponsoring a booth at Kamiakin’s Carnival, helping out at
Ridgeview’s Coyote Howl, and assisting with the Senior Awards Assembly. Service hours and
dues need to be in by May 15th; about a week later a list for seniors who have successfully com-
pleted all requirements will be released to the ASB office, at which time seniors will be able to pay
for their honor cords and tassels and pick them up from me. If you have questions, please contact
me at 222-6087.

Undecided Seniors…
“Where are YOU going?” Need some help? Here are some choices…
Career/Technical colleges: You can earn a certificate, degree, or diploma from a career college or technical school that will train you for a specific career, trade, or pro-fession. One to two years of college and off to work! These schools train students for a variety of technical positions, including automotive technician, computer technician, hairstylist, medical assistant, engineering technology, fire science and many other
fields.
Community Colleges: Community colleges are two year post-secondary institutions that offer certificate programs, Associate of Arts degrees, Associate of Sciences de-grees, plus many other programs.
For both of the above go to Career Cruising to find a school that would apply to your interest.
Military: The U.S. Armed Forces are made up of the six armed service branches: Air
Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, & National Guard. There are hundreds of
careers in the military in which you can earn an AA or BA degree while serving your
country. Check with the local recruiter or on the KAHS career center web site for more
information.
On –the-Job & Apprenticeships: Apprenticeships are a combination of on-the-job training and related classroom instruction in which workers learn the practical and theo-retical aspects of a highly skilled occupation. Apprenticeship programs are sponsored by joint employer and labor groups, individual employers, and/or employer associations. These are paid positions.
Link to Career Cruising to find information that would apply to your career inter-est.

Get involved in activities outside the classroom. Work toward leadership positions
in the activities that you like best.
Become involved in community service and other volunteer activities. (The peo-
ple who read college applications aren’t just looking for grades).
Check out careers you think you may be interested in. Use Career Cruising or
come to the Career Center for information.
Remember: “Grades Do Count Forever!”
Juniors
Juniors will be revisiting their Career Cruising during the US History classes this
spring to update research for careers, colleges and adding a resume’. This is a great opportunity for Juniors to prepare for next year.
Register for the SAT or ACT exams and prepare before taking the test.
Colleges will start doing their spring visits before long, so plan on attending to get
more information to help you be ready to decide next fall.
Use Career Cruising as a helpful tool when doing a college search.
Set up a filing system with individual folders for each college’s correspondence
and printed material.
If you are planning on attending a military academy you should apply for admission between April of your junior year in high school and November of your senior year in high school. The earlier you apply the better.
Seniors
Review your Student Aid Report and make corrections, if necessary.
Respond promptly to requests for additional information from your college or
scholarship organization.
Watch your mail box for college acceptance letters and financial aid offers.
Evaluate all financial aid offers carefully. Ask questions!
Consider grants, work-study and other aid you don't have to repay before accept-
ing a student loan.
Decide on a college and send in all forms or deposits by the deadline (May 1 for
most colleges).
Let your college know the financial aid awards you're accepting and declining.
Notify the colleges you were accepted to but won't be attending.
Keep checking the scholarship list and applying for those that apply to your career.
Keep checking your school email for updates.
