Brant DavidsonInternational School of Zug and LuzernWhy wireless networks need a lot of wire (and a few other bits too).

A little bit about me.Shameless self promotion.15+ years in Edu-tech.Four years in the Army as an EngineerWorked at the Santa Fe County detention Center in the early 90sMoved back to Europe and have been very happy there! And as one of our colleagues pointed out You have a graveyard and a Vineyard.Married to the most patient woman on the planet. Two kiddiesOne NieceAnd Maggie

Originally from the city of South Lake Tahoe CaliforniaAnd what I have done with a lot of help.I have set up the infrastructure in the following schools;Frankfurt International SchoolEarly years buildingZurich International SchoolWaedenswilKilchbergSeestrasseAdliswilInternational School of Zug and LuzernBaar CampusHunenbergLuzernWengen

Wireless, the fallacy.

Wireless Technology has been around for a while.

The Photophone, 1880.Alexander Graham Bell and Charles Sumner Tainter133 years. Not really practical.Analog and limited capacity. It needed to be converterd in a simple binary systemOn and Off, or 0 and 1.Digitized.

Bell labs Voder (vocoder), 1920sFrom monster machine to my phone..

Magic! Not really. To get from here to the interweb, how many devices?Enough.

Access points, routers, switches, hubs, servers, cloud, warp core, flux capcitor. In the basic form.Access points connect the wireless device to a wire.Switches connect the wires inside a building.Routers connect the buildings together. This includes buildings across the world.Servers - Beefy computers that hold and transform data (stuff) AND share it.The Cloud The new way of referring to servers on the internet.I am not going to explain the other two.

The worlds best IT team at the top of Europe. Its not cheap.Internet access should be your highest recurring IT cost.Honestly, is you speed fast enough?Dont get in the trap and buy super duper computers and not spend on the infrastructure.Like a Ferrari on a gravel road.

2000 liters, that's still not enough capacity! What does it take?MANAGED AND MODERN WIRELESS!!!!Good backbone (switches) to shift the data inside your site.Routers must also be of the best quality and able to segment your networks.Again, fast SYMETRICAL internetPeople..

50 access points and we still need more.Someone has to.Design itSet it upDocument itMaintain it

Even the powerful need cheat sheetsDont Panic! This stuff lasts a while.Routers and switches can last for decades.A switch was set up in 1997, its still running core services at a major International School in GermanyModern APs support pretty good speed, but..

Built to last!Keep it going!Make sure people can use it.Security is vital, but youre not Raytheon.Secure and watch. But how?!?

Secure:

Back upAnti-VirusUpdatesGateway defenseFirewall!

Watch:

FilterLogfilesAccess controlAnd keep an eye on the network. My network monitoring tool..

Final thoughts:

Nevermore

Things break, have spares

Dont lose sight of the whole.

Prepare for disasters.

Documentation!

Defend, but dont spoil the view.

Remember, its for people to use.

AND enjoy!Thank you for your time and, of course, any questions?
