Branding is a form of recognition. People trust brands. Marketed in the right way: clothing brands for example become popular once they have been established by the public. I feel that it is important for my artist to have a certain branded image in order to be separated from the competition of the ever-growing media world. Artists with strong brand images are remembered and positioned in a higher regard as they offer a new ideal. The trends they carry can be copied and made the trend of the times.
Michael Jackson
Britney Spears
Michael Jackson(case study)
1. The Jackson Five began with the Motown label at the age of 10. National recognition came with his appearance on the Ed Sullivan show.2. Jackson went solo in 1972 at the age of
13. As with Diana Ross and the Supremes3. Jackson was a multidimensional
entertainer. His expert dancing could be showcased via the new medium of music videos. MTV and Jackson rose in tandem when MTV premiered the Jackson video "Thriller" in 1982
4. Jackson understood brand image and how to build it with his fans. The moonwalk that we could all try to imitate. The glove. The uniform. Neverland.
Britney spears(case study)
The Guardian: “When we were obsessed with branding, Britney Spears seemed the ultimate person-as-product. Then she became central to the depiction of young women as insensible and insatiable.”• Age of 11 she was signed to appear on a TV show, the Mickey
Mouse Club, alongside Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera. Her selling point was innocence, but when she started her solo singing career aged 17, that image became complicated.
Britney has been seen as the ‘girl gone bad’ her innocent school-girl music videos turned into raunchy airhostess videos (toxic) and her run-in with the press when she shaved all her hair off sparked ‘insane’.
To help her brand image Britney released a perfume called ‘fantasy’. She is associated with her bright blonde hair and ‘Hollywood smile’
My brand image
Pippa’s brand image is a girl who is ‘dangerous’ and has sex appeal. She poses in my video as a feminine, dominating character, wearing risqué clothing (see-through dress and black dress) and a confident attitude. This image will make her a target audience for my female audience: they may want to be just like her- she looks stylish and talks about what love can do to you. Teenage girls may associate with this as they are starting to have relationships themselves. Boys will also be my targeted audience: they may be attracted to the girl’s look and may see her as their ‘ideal woman’ perhaps.
iconography
My media text focuses upon terror and fright. The theme of black hands and eyes are very influential aspects and have been framed by my questionnaire feedback as the audiences favorite shots.
