5. Legal Puzzlers - Based on a syllabus by Andreas Teuber, Associate

Professor of Philosophy at Brandeis University

Leader: Judy Gruenberger

Is there more to murder than killing someone? What is a crime? In this study group we test

our legal intuitions, examining cases both actual and hypothetical involving controversial

issues. The facts of the cases are understandable and easy to grasp, but difficult to resolve.

They raise questions for which there is often more than one good answer. In attempting to

resolve a particular "puzzler," we will try to decide the case and reach a conclusion about

the conundrums in the law, rather than predict how the case would be decided in court.

BNC GOES TO THE MOVIES

Above and Beyond

In 1948, a group of World War II pilots volunteered to fight for Israel in the War of

Independence. As members of “Machal” – volunteers from abroad – this ragtag band of

brothers not only turned the tide of the war, preventing the possible annihilation of Israel

at the very moment of its birth, but they also laid the foundation for the Israeli Air Force.

Because of American anti-Semitism, the men were forbidden to join in the Israeli struggle;

thus the planes and armament they carried had to be purchased clandestinely.

Drawing on interviews with historians and the surviving pilots, reenactments and archival

footage, Above and Beyond tells this fascinating and little-known historical story.
