Brain Based Therapy

A Comprehensive Treatment

For Chronic Pain, Dysfunction

and Other Neurological Conditions

Presented By: Dr. Corey King, D.C.

Goals of Tonight’s Workshop

• Common but Overlooked Causes for Chronic Pain, Dysfunction and Other Neurologic Conditions

• Learn New Treatment Options

• In 20+ minutes

• Questions

Page 3: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

Introduction to Brain Based Therapy

• A Non-Invasive Solution -- NO Medications, No Surgery

• Based on the work of Chiropractic Neurologist Dr. Fred Carrick and the World Renowned Carrick Institute

• Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist Dr. Michael Johnson, author of What Do You Do When the Medications Don’t Work?

“The Nervous SystemControls and Coordinatesall the Systems of the Bodyand Relates the Individual

to Their Environment”

Gray’s Anatomy, 24th edition, pp. 4

Your Nervous System

Consists of your brain, spinal cord and nerves

Brain = Your Central Computer

Nerves = Communication Cables

Each cell is DEPENDENT on those nerve signals to stay alive and healthy.

The Brain Stem

The Cerebellum

The Cerebrum

aka “Brain”

Page 7: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

The Brainstem

• Controls many automatic processes

– Breathing, Heart rate, Motor Control, ...

• Sleep-Wake Cycles

• Sensitivity to Pain

If this area doesn’t work well, neither do these functions!

Page 8: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

The Cerebellum

• Control & stability of Postural muscles and Spine

• Balance and Coordination

• Keeps the brainstem from over-firing

Page 9: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

The Cerebrum

“The Brain”

• Higher cognitive function: thought, memory, emotion

• Initiates Muscle Movement

• Speech and Language

• Interprets Sensation: Sight, Hearing, Touch, Taste, Smell

Low output from Brain = allows brainstem to over-fire!

How does this happen?

Trauma- Chemical

- Physical

- Emotional Stress

Causes brain to decrease “Frequency of Firing”

= Fewer Nerve Impulses

Page 13: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

Disruption of the Brain’s Electrical VitalityCan Cause:

• Chronic Pain & Chronic Fatigue

• Migraine headaches & light sensitivity

• Dizziness/Vertigo

• Blurred vision

• Insomnia: difficulty falling or staying asleep

Page 14: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

Disruption of the Brain’s Electrical VitalityCan Cause:

• Heart palpitations, increased heart rate

• Irritable Bowel Syndrome

• Urinary tract infections

• High blood pressure

• Fibro-Fog or Flu-like symptoms

Page 15: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

• Depression/anxiety

• Difficulty scanning pages while reading

• Difficulty adding or subtracting

• Difficulty with verbal expressing

• Difficulty understanding language

• Decreased Memory

Disruption of the Brain’s Electrical VitalityCan Cause:

Page 16: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

• Altered sensation (numbness, tingling, ...)

• Changes in handwriting

• Anger and increased irritability

• Problems with balance, tripping or dropping things

• Learning difficulties

• Decreased sex drive

Disruption of the Brain’s Electrical VitalityCan Cause:

Fibromyalgia Does Not Get Better By Itself

• The longer you have Fibromyalgia the faster your brain dies. The Journal of Neuroscience reports that the McGill University Centre for Research on pain has found; “The longer the individual has had fibromyalgia, the greater the gray matter loss, with each year of fibromyalgia being equivalent to 9.5 times the loss in normal aging”. In addition it is estimated that 30-60% of patients diagnosed with Fibromyalgia become disabled to the degree they cannot remain gainfully employed…and that is with the myriad of medications prescribed.

Page 23: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

How Is Brain Based Therapy Different?

Page 24: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

Neuroplasticity… “Of all the finds, though, one is rewriting the textbooks. It is the dawning realization that a brain older than three years old is not the rigid structure that scientists long thought, but a malleable, ‘plastic’ organ”... “But a flood of discoveries show that the brain continually reorganizes itself. It’s called ‘neuroplasticity.’ And it means that “you create your brain from the input you get”

Page 25: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

Key Points on Neuroplasticity

Your Brain Changes when Stimulated.

Different types of stimulation

help different areas of your brain.

Page 26: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

How do you increase brain function?

• Examine and Test

• Identify the under-firing brain area

• Treat / Stimulate the Area

• Re-test / Measure the Change

Treating Cerebellum and Brain Dysfunction

2 Requirements for Healthy Brain:

● Fuel

● Activation

- Glucose- Glucose- Oxygen- Oxygen

- Unilateral (one-sided) stimulation of body- Unilateral (one-sided) stimulation of body- Brain-based rehabilitation- Brain-based rehabilitation

Page 28: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

Therapies Used for Brain Activation

• Upper Body Ergometer using Oxygen Concentrator

Page 29: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

Oxygen Concentrators

• Deliver 95% Oxygen

• Use while exercising

• Activates Cerebellum

• Provides Fuel & Activation

Page 30: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

Therapies Used for Brain Activation

May Include Some of the Following:• Oxygen Therapy• Vibration Therapy on One Side of the Body• Gentle Neurologic Adjustments • Heat• Balance Therapy• Advanced muscle retraining

The Bottom Line

A Comprehensive SolutionMust Detect & Correct:

• Brain / Central Nervous System deficiencies

• Structural Causes for Pain

Page 33: Brain Based Therapy Workshop

How do you know if Brain Based Therapy is right for your

condition?• Screening Exam & Review of History

• Review of MRI’s & Diagnostic Images

• X-rays (If suspect structural damage)

• Neurological and Physical Exam

• Review of Findings
