Our classrooms continue to buzz along. When you visit our classrooms hopefully you have seen the large bulls- eye posters and sentence strips that refer to the Learning Targets. With the shift to the newly transformed curriculum we have also changed our pedagogy - meaning we are focusing more on what our students are able to DO as a result of our lessons and activities. Each and every lesson or activity will have one or more LEARNING TARGET that teachers will refer to so our student know ahead of time what they are working towards. Although each grade has some variation in the targets, all the targets are skill based. For example, in Grade 2 you may hear that the Big Idea - or the unit of study - is Animals Adapt to their Habitats. The learning targets that go with this big idea may be: I can gather information from a variety of sources (as they research and learn about animal adaptations), I can sort data into categories based on prior knowledge (i.e. making decisions about facts they are learning), I can communicate my ideas clearly when working in a group. These targets are being referred to by the teacher before, during and after each lesson or activities. Students are also getting the chance to self-assess their progress using the bulls-eye as a guide. If you visit the Kindergarten room you will often hear - are you demonstrating bulls-eye behaviour? It is an exciting time in education. Students are at the center and we are excited to be able to give them opportunities to assess their progress and to know that they share the responsibility for the learning. Teaching our students to set learning goals, reflect on their individual progress towards goals and

their ability to self-assess their achievement of these goals.

Principal’s Message

Happy February! I hope you are all enjoying the rainy weather. Hard to believe that this time last year we were dealing with large amounts of SNOW! Our classrooms continue to buzz along. When you visit our classrooms hopefully you have seen the large bulls-eye posters and sentence strips that refer to the Learning Targets.

Mrs. Fay Christie Principal

PINK SHIRT DAY – February 21, 2018 Mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 21, 2018 is when we will hold our Annual Pink Shirt Anti-Bullying Day. It started in September 2007, when two teens at a Nova Scotia high school stood up for a younger student. David Shepherd and Travis Price, both in Grade 12, heard about a new Grade 9 student at their school who had been bullied and threatened for wearing a pink polo shirt on his first day of school. They decided they should do something about it and went to a discount store, where they bought 50 pink shirts and tank tops to wear to school the next day. They also went online to round up support for their anti-bullying cause, which they dubbed a “See Of Pink.” It worked. The next day, dozens of students were outfitted with the discount shirts, but even better – hundreds of students showed up wearing their own pink clothes, some from head to toe. The bullies were reportedly never heard from again. This year, wear pink with us on Wednesday, February 21 for our annual anti-bullying event that started after the now-famous 2007 “Sea Of Pink” campaign.

(Canada Wide event takes place on Wednesday, February 28, 2018)

Safety & Security Students are to enter and exit the building through their assigned doors ONLY. All visitors are to enter and exit the building through the main entrance located directly across the hall from the office. Students have been instructed to NOT

open any exterior door for anyone. Please do not feel that our students are ignoring you or being rude, but they are actually following instructions. Please help to enforce these rules by not banging on any exterior doors and by only entering and exiting through the main entrance. If you are in the building helping with an activity, please do NOT open the exterior doors at any time, to allow entrance to someone that is banging on the door. All visitors are required to report to the office upon arrival to receive authorization for their presence in the school. Visitors on official business are welcome at our school. (Students should not invite friends to visit them at school.) Please note: Parents dropping off lunches, homework, etc., are asked to make sure their child’s name is on the item, and leave it in the office, to minimize class disruptions during valuable teaching time. We have noticed that there is an increase in traffic floating around the school near the end of the school day. We are asking that you please wait outside the designated assigned doors to pick up your child at the end of the school day. Safety of our students is always the primary concern of administration and staff.

IMPORTANT – SCHOOL CATCHMENTS: AP 336-3 In-District Non-Catchment Request AP 336-4 Out of District Request

If your child is a non-catchment student and is not currently eligible to automatically continue at the school or transition to the feeder middle/secondary school, then your child will be transferred to their catchment school for September 2018 to ensure they maintain a place in an Abbotsford school. If you wish for your child to continue in their non-catchment school, you are required to:

1. Complete an AP 336-3 In-District Non-Catchment Request.

Page 4: BRADNER ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTERdesignated assigned doors to pick up your child at the end of the school day. Safety of our students is always the primary concern of administration and

2. Take the completed Non-Catchment Request to your catchment school for the principal to review and sign.

3. Starting February 1, 2018, take the Non-Catchment form to your child’s current school. Requests will be considered after space is made available for all catchment area children. Non-Catchment Requests will be reviewed at the end of April for schools not experiencing enrolment pressure.

Non-Catchment applications will be placed on a wait list and reviewed at the end of the first week of school in September. Following the review, any out-of-catchment students who have been accepted into a school for September 2018 will be required to reapply for placement on an annual basis. For more information, please visit the Abbotsford School District Website Or contact your school Principal. http://www.abbyschools.ca/schools/catchments
