fall 2010the design of the proposed mixed-use building in the west chelsea neighborhood of manhat-tan took many cues from the site itself. the initially loosely-defined program found specificity in the unique surroundings of a neigh-borhood that is a melting pot of programmatic functions by fusing the ideas of the fading industrial influence of the area with the new-ly injected cultural elements. the resultant is a design that takes on the role of a warehouse for cul-ture in which users are filtered through the building in order to experience different possibilities of culture ranging from informal and formal performance venues, restaurant and lounge, and indoor and outdoor event spaces.

located in the west chelsea section of manahttan, the site bounded by west 11th avenue and west 10th avenue, west 17th street and west 18th street serves as an intersection of industry, entertainment, and commerce. after a long history of industrial use the neighborhood has experienced a transformation in recent years to a center of culture. with the injection of high-end retailers, chic restaurants and night spots, trendy galleries, iconic buildings designed by frank gehry, jean nouvel, and richard meier, as well as the diller scofidio + renfro designed high line park this site presented itself as an opportunity to synthesize many programmatic influences into one cohesive experience of culture. by using the existing adjacent user typologies as a framework, a sympathetic programmatic hybrid was developed that included several different types and scales of performance venues, event and hospitality spaces, and cultural experiences.

  • initial studies into the transformative system of carbon became the seed of the design process. by dia-gramming the unique shifting physical phases of amorphous carbon, graphite, diamond, liquid carbon, and carbon vapor as temperature and pressure changes a basis of design was established. just as carbons molecular organization, structural rigidity, and physical appearance changes as it transitions from one phase to the next, so too does the logic of the architectural manifestation as it transitions from one program to the next. structural systems transition from dominant to hidden, facades from transparent to opaque, and pro-grammatic organization from flexible informal spaces to formally organized spaces.

    spring 2010

cirque du soleil has established itself as the worlds preeminent circus brand by pushing the possibilities of the human body, tech-nology, and sensation. by synthesizing traditional circus acts with unorthodox dance techniques, various forms of martial arts, fringe acrobatic acts, and inventive storytelling, cirque du soleil have sepa-rated themselves as one of the most recognizable and sought-after acts in las vegas. this studios challenge was to design a building on the las vegas strip to house a rehearsal space for cirque du soleil performers as well as several themed entertainment elements includ-ing a restaurant, lounge, and interactive gymnastic and acrobatic gymnasiums inspired by cirque du soleil elements.

  • located on the las vegas strip directly adjacent to circus circus hotel casino and across from the riviera hotel casino, the site finds itself deeply embedded in the flashy fabric unique to las vegas. challenges of scale within the overall row of casinos and hotels, the relationship to the bustling strip, and questions of articulation and form with respect to its overly dramatic neighbors were all essential questions to be answered by the resulting design.

based on the analysis of one of several las vegas cirque du soleil performances, ka, the design of the building took shape. from connecting characters to building users, costume colors to architectural finishes, and the unique twisting stage system to overall building formal language ka drove the design process. by creating a system from the analysis and allowing it to create non-standard programmatic opportunities and hybrid conditions the building took on unique qualities not possible using standard design techniques.

  • LiveWork combines living and working dynamics to accommodate a total music culture in every aspect. I am looking to attract creative people across the entire musical spectrum including musicians, engineers, producers, sound technicians, independent record label representatives, and concert promoters. This will be a place to cultivate up-and-coming, independent professionals where creative individuals and groups can live and practice their craft while being in a community full of like-minded people with an encouragement for collaboration that would otherwise be unlikely. The programs main fabrication area is a vinyl record pressing plant and will also include commercial space for a record store and a musical instrument shop. Other more public elements are a performance venue, space for a radio station, and office space for independent record labels and promotion organizations. Also included will be recording studios, and rehearsal space for the tenants of the building including musicians and producers as well as studios with public access. The recording studios will happen at several different scales, including a main studio for the use of the public, while also including other smaller recording spaces spaced throughout the building and even as small as individual units. Common areas for more informal rehearsal and collaborative opportunities will be dispersed throughout the program to encourage performance and musical interaction between the community.

  • williamsburg, brooklyn is an eclectic neighborhood that is attempting to come to terms with the dichotomy of its industrial history and the current developer-driven luxury condominium boom, as well as its embedded hispanic population and hasidic jewish community and the recent influx of largely young white hipster and artist types taking advantage of the affordable rent prices and convenient location. the site is situated just off the east river and bounded by kent avenue, whythe avenue, south fourth street, and south third street, just one block north of the willaimsburg bridge. the project attempts to reflect the idea of the sites industrial past and young, creative present by creating an incubator for the manufacturing of musical culture.

    spring 2009

the creation of architecture begins with lines. by the map-ping of separate systems of materiality, social interaction, and natural forces through the use of lines geometric intel-ligence was developed. lines converge and diverge, lines suggest movement and boundary, lines create continuity and difference. as these systems are overlaid they create a network of intelligence to be sifted, sorted, and deciphered to become the basis of architectural logic. the challenge was to understand the systems of material, society, and na-ture and synthesize them into a proposal for a montessori school in staten island, new york.

  • the staten island site is on a sloping lot bounded by carroll place, st. marks place, a church rectory, and a residential row just a block from the harbor. as a means of translating the site into usable information, an informal interpretation of wind forces was taken to gain an understanding of the natu-ral forces on the site. this data was interpreted into vectors of different types, weights, and thickness to track the wind direction, intensity, and frequency. this was one element of information to layer upon others to create the overall net-work.

  • site wind diagram

  • schooling diagram

montessori schooling employs a unique teaching methodology that focuses on experience through trial and error of the child rather than being lectured to or force-fed informa-tion. thus, a montessori classroom is filled with different stations for the children to experience various tasks and stimuli in order to master necessary skill sets. an interpretation of a matching game used to gain cognitive skills in montessori schools is the basis of the social and learning system utilized with the project. the qualities of symmetry, mirroring, and matching organization were carried through the project by the lines of the diagram.

    fall 2008

the creation of a system in the form of a physical model led to the translation of ideas, rules, and logics into an archi-tectural manifestation taking the form of a subway interven-tion in gowanus, brooklyn. the physical system came from a series of folds and cuts in a sheet of tyvek housewrap and was subsequently analyzed for its relationship of com-pression to permeability. by injecting the model with site logistics and programmatic necessities as forces, the model was deformed and created an intelligent system from which architectural ideas were derived and thus a physical mani-festation in the form of a building.

  • the smith and 9th street subway station rises above the snaking canals of gowanus, brooklyn, a neighborhood that is currently navigating the convergence of the toxic nature of industry and the livable necessity of residence. beyond the contaminated canals, the residents must also grapple with the many noisy industrial establishments and elevated brooklyn queens expressway. because of the industrial fab-ric, many creatives have flocked to the area to take advan-tage of the large spaces and affordable rent. many small art galleries have sprung up along with independent music venues and hipster lounges as evidence of the gentrification of the area. all of these influences were considered and weighed heavily on the design intervention on the subway station.
