Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our first newsletter of the academic year. We have had a very busy start

with a range of activities across all zones, from exciting curriculum trips, no pens day,

visits to local museums, sporting competitions and opportunities for KS5 Green and Blue

Zone students to take part in their first driving lessons.

I was honoured to be able to judge the results of the Geography Awareness afternoon,

where every student worked as a team within their House to research and create displays

on the threats to the our planet’s oceans and wildlife. As you can see, our House Teams

have been busy competing and are currently gearing up for the next competition in the

hope to support The Medway Street Angels. Have a look at the detail to see if you might

be able to help.

On the 10th November we came together to mark Remembrance, reflecting as a

community on the events of the past and those who had sacrificed their lives to enable

us to have freedom. It was a heart-warming event and I was proud of every student for

taking part.

We have many seasonal activities planned for the forthcoming weeks, so please look out

for letters and notes in students’ planners for full details of events, such as the

Christmas Fayre on Saturday 9th December, the Christmas Concert on Wednesday 13th

December and the Christmas Jumper Tag Day on Friday 15th December!

I’d like to thank you for supporting your children and the academy in our charity work,

already since September we have raised a whooping £1386.37 to support Jeans for

Genes, Macmillan Cancer Support and Children in Need.

We have now gone ‘live’ with our new Facebook page:

www.facebook.com/BradfieldsAcademy

Up to date detail on events will be published weekly. Please log in and like our page!

Thank you all for your on-going support,

Yours faithfully

Miss Sweetlove

Principal

Our coffee morning and tuck shop in September raised a much needed £272.10

for MacMillan Cancer Support and our Wear It Pink Day in October raised

£286.80

But by far our biggest fund raising event this

year to date was for Children in Need on 17th

November 2017. We had a tuck shop, a tag day

and sold Pudsey ears and pins. In total we raised

£608.87

Our first event this year was Jeans for Genes, a charity that funds research

into life altering genetic illnesses. This year we raised an amazing £218.60

At Bradfields we like to raise students’ awareness of

those who are less fortunate by taking part in charity

events.

Geography Awareness

Afternoon!

On Friday 13th October staff and students took part in a

Geography House Competition. The topic for the

afternoon was “Save the Oceans”. Each house was given an

ocean to study, arts and craft material and a blank display

board somewhere around the academy to decorate.

Students came together in their houses to discuss the

damage happening in their ocean, armed with this information

the students began to design marine animals and information

to go on their display.

Students around the site were writing information on how we

could help look after the oceans; we also saw many creative

images of penguins and fish with plastic bags around them or

oil spills affecting them.

It was amazing to see how passionate the students were

when learning about the oceans. We could see students

arranging the display boards and helping to present their

information.

In Blue Zone one part of the display reads “You can only

take some of the fishes to eat with fish and chips, but

please keep the rest in the sea.”

All the students worked really hard on their displays

and I hope they enjoy seeing them around the

academy, as much as I do.

House Update In term 1 we ran two house competitions; a merit chase and the Geography

Awareness afternoon.

The merit chase encouraged students to work well in every lesson to earn as many

merits as they could in every lesson. The students certainly didn’t disappoint and

over the fortnight each house amassed huge totals with many students earning

their bronze certificate (50 merits) or even their silver certificate (100 merits).

The winning house was Birch, followed closely in second place by Oak, with Pine and

Ash finishing in third and fourth place respectively.

As you would have already read the Geography Awareness afternoon was equally as

fun and competitive.

We have many more house competitions lined up for the year including another

Foodbank collection, Christmas and Easter events and of course, Sports Day. We

thank you in advance of your support of the house system and for any

contributions that you may make.

The current house totals are displayed below.

The next House Competition At Bradfields, we like to support and help the local community in a range of

charity events by helping people who may at different times of the year be less

fortunate than ourselves.

Therefore, as an Academy, we would like to support the Medway Street Angels,

Maidstone & Sittingbourne, which provides an outreach service for people sleeping

rough in Medway. They provide hot food/drinks, camping essentials, general every

day food/drink, clothes and toiletries.

As an Academy, we would like to collect donations of various items to help support

this worthwhile charity. Below is a list of suggested items which could be donated.

We will be running this as a house competition, with points awarded to the house

that collects the most items.

The competition will run between Monday 27th November and Friday 8th December.

I hope that you will provide us with many donations and help support both this

worthwhile cause and also our Academy house system.

Suggested donations:

Toiletries.

Old, clean clothing.

Chocolate Bars, Tinned Food, High Energy Snacks, Pot Noodles.

Breakfast Bars, Crisps, Biscuits, Cereal, Tinned and Packet Soups.

Energy Drinks, Tea & Coffee, Bottled Water, Long Life Milk & Squash.

Guides go to Wembley

10.000 othersTITLE –

36pt

At 9.30am on Saturday 7th October 24 Bradfields Guides boarded the coach to go to

Girlguiding’s Big Gig at Wembley Arena. The traffic was awful and when we arrived

there was a huge queue to get in due to all the additional security but we made it just

in time for the first act.

As we entered the dark arena we

were met by a wall of sound and

10,000 Girl Guides waving light

sticks and wearing funny costumes

and head gear – it was quite a

challenge to find our seats!

We partied with the best of them

and had a wonderful time; the acts

were all great but our favourites

were 5 After Midnight and Pixie

Lott. It was awesome to see so

many Guides together in one place.

Stars performing just for the

Guides included Pixie Lott, Louisa

Johnson, Jasmine Thompson,

Noodlerella, Ella Eyre and 5AM.

The Guides would like to thank the

seven leaders who went with them.

Guides is open to all girls from Year 7 up.

Meetings are on Thursday afternoons, 3.30pm

– 5.00pm. Contact Mrs Brook if you want to

know more.

Storyteller Workshops Bradfields Academy has been lucky enough to host two very successful Storyteller

Workshops so far this year. The Storyteller Workshop is a drama company that

visits schools across the country and focuses on the art of telling stories from

around the world on a host of themes in a very visual and interactive manner. Our

two themed days have been based on what we have been studying in class: Black

History Month and Mythical Creatures. There were ten sessions overall and the

classes of students from Years 7 up to Year 10 had such an amazing time dressing

up, acting out and learning about world storytelling in such an exciting manner. We

have three more workshops booked for this year and students are already

clamouring to be involved again; such was the impact of both days.

Page 10: Bradfields Academy - Home...Noodlerella, Ella Eyre and 5AM. The Guides would like to thank the seven leaders who went with them. Guides is open to all girls from Year 7 up. Meetings

On November 8th the ‘Betty Bus’ visited Bradfields

Academy. The purpose of this visit was to give all of our students information

on puberty, periods and growing up in general.

The Betty Bus sessions offer learning sessions for the girls in order to explore

the physical and emotional aspects of periods and growing up. They go onto the

bus and trained facilitators take them through all aspects in a fun and

informative way.

The boys were not forgotten! It is important that the boys also get to know about

what half the population of the world will go through. The boys groups were led by

other facilitators who gave them information on periods and also on areas of growing

up which were of particular concern to the boys. The sessions were lively and fun

as well as being informative. Warm – up exercises and fun tasks ensured that these

sessions were enjoyed by the students. Preparation work before and after ensured

that students were ready to tackle what can be difficult topics for some.

The leader of the team who came was really impressed by our students commenting

on their excellent behaviour and levels of engagement.

Kent School Games Boccia

Tournament

On the 9th of November ten students travelled to New Line Learning Academy in

Maidstone to compete in a Level 2 Boccia tournament.

The students were divided into three teams. Two teams,

called ‘Dab’ and ‘Magic’, competed in the U14s tournament

and one team took part in the U19s competition.

The aim of Boccia is to score as many points as possible by

students rolling their set of coloured balls closest to the

white jack ball.

Each team played three games within their groups. Congratulations to Bradfields Magic

who ended in third place within their group. Bradfields Dab won their group and went

through to the finals but unfortunately lost. This did give them second place in the U14s

competition however. Well done!

Bradfields Army played against one other school and had to play the best of three

games. The scores were level going into the final games which created a very tense

affair. Bradfields Army took the lead early on but then the jack ball was knocked closer

to the other team, meaning we lost the last game. Well done to this team for securing

second place.

Huge congratulations to all the teams for getting third and second places - fantastic

results! The students made Bradfields proud with their performances and behaviour.

Well done!

Remembrance 2017

On Friday November 10th at 11.00am

Bradfields students marked Remembrance by

holding a ceremony in the Russell Square area

of the academy.

We gathered together as a community and

listened to speeches and poems from Mrs

Hitchings, Mrs Skingley, Ashleigh, Thomas,

Joshua, Lewis, Bailey, Libby, and Bradley.

It was 100 years since the third battle of Ypres or Passchendaele. The academy listened

while these students read out information and poems detailing soldiers experiences

during this terrible “Battle of the Mud”, including a soldier who had said:

“It rained and rained and rained…. There were no trenches at Passchendaele…just shell

holes with sandbags so that you could hide inside them…….it was a sea of mud….I have

seen men covered in mud, they just scraped it away from their eyes”. The Guides kindly helped out by ushering everyone to their correct places for the

service and many of them wore their uniforms as a mark of respect. The service ended

with the release of poppy canons which sent petals falling across the Academy.

“We’ll Meet Again”

On Friday 10th November, the Bradfields

community came together for an evening of

wartime nostalgia and entertainment. The evening

began with wartime broadcasts of news bulletins

and short films. It then moved to the exciting

sing-along world of the music hall where

Bradfields staff delighted us all with their

renditions of popular hits from the 1940s. The

evening closed with dancing under the mirror ball

to classic songs by the likes of Fred Astaire and

Cole Porter.

The entire evening had

a wonderfully relaxed

feel about it and

audience members even

remarked that it

brought back lots of

memories for them. A

huge well done and

thank you goes to all

involved.

Following the launch of the Home Learning Life Skills booklet, we wanted to clarify a few points

following feedback and a meeting we have had with parents/carers at the recent Parent &

Careers forum.

Primary: To continue with their reading.

KS3: English and maths will continue to set home learning. All other home learning will be from

the home learning booklet that the students can work on throughout the year at their own

pace.

KS4 and KS5: English and maths will continue to set home learning. Students will get additional

home learning from their option subjects which will need to be returned. Students will continue

to work through the home learning booklets at their own pace completing the skills that are

most relevant to them.

Other points to clarify:

- If your son/daughter is not studying that specific subject in the booklet then they do

not need to attempt those parts if they do not want to.

- The students can go through the home learning booklet in any order, as it fits in with

them and their family.

- The Home Learning life skills will be reviewed at events as listed in the back of the

booklet.

- If students wish, they can bring in a photograph of themselves completing life skills

from the booklet, or write a note in the student planner so these achievements can be

celebrated in assemblies.

Further Life Skills for students to work on at home:

- Talk about crossing the road safely, try this skill with an adult

- Use a pedestrian crossing

- Talk about making an emergency phone call – 999

- Talk about fire safety in the home and your house fire escape routes/procedures

Thank you for your continued support and we hope the students are enjoying working through

their booklets.

Primary – How do you

start your day?

Each morning we take part in a variety of activities to support the transition

between home and the Academy. We all need different activities. Some of us

need space to move and jump, some of us need time to be calm and adjust.

How do you feel today? We indicate on the board to show our emotion. We

have spinning toys we focus on that spin and time on our own with the small

world house. Some of us like to dance while some of us check our favourite

toys are where we left them the day before. Whatever we choose, we get

ourselves ready for the day ahead! How do you start your day?

Primary – Let’s explore.…

This term Elephant class have started regular horse riding sessions at

Arrow Riding Stables. These sessions provide the opportunity to develop

their core stability and balance as well as develop a sense of achievement

from trying new experiences. Students are currently learning the commands

“walk on” and “stop”.

Tiger class and Bumblebees class will have the opportunity to take part in horse-

riding lessons later in the academic year.

Bumblebees class have been

exploring ways of playing,

using different senses.

9-10TK What a great start to the new academic year. Our class has been

working so hard to improve their reading. We are reading for Buster’s

Book Club every day and our teachers have noticed how much we have

improved.

We have had the opportunity to go to our local library and we found so

many other books there that we really liked. We just love reading, and

this is what we have to say: “I enjoy going to the library because I can

choose any book to read and it is a lovely place to sit down quietly.” And

“I like the big books that have pictures in it especially if they have

animals with soft fur.”

This year we have started our options. One of them is BTEC

Construction with Mr Walker. We have been learning so much about lots

of different things. One example is about how we can rewire a plug and

look at the end result… We all did it!!

“I like this option a lot because I get to make and fix things especially

rewiring the plug.” Commented one student, while another said “It’s

really good to learn about something new. I learnt how to use tools

safely to fix the plug. Mr Walker is our Construction teacher and he is

so good at helping us all out.”

14GK Off Site Activities 14GK have enjoyed an exciting start to their final year at Bradfields Academy.

On Tuesdays the students go off site to do activities which develop their community

engagement and skills for life. This has included volunteering and learning to drive.

During Young Drivers, students have the opportunity to find out what it is like to be in

the driver’s seat. Students have tried really hard, thoroughly enjoyed themselves and

made some good progress.

Students have learned lots of new skills when they go out to college on a Monday morning

to learn Vehicle Maintenance, always returning to Bradfields Academy with wonderful

stories of what they have achieved.

Some students are part of our group of Community Volunteers who currently spend

Tuesdays at Chatham Historic Dockyard working to keep the amazing exhibits clean and

shiny for the visitors to the attraction. Students have helped to clean the archive store

and spent a day polishing brass and copper on HMS Cavalier.

No Pens DayOn Wednesday the 4th October 2017 it was No Pens Day. Students participated in

all their lessons without the use of pens.

This was a great opportunity for students to use auditory, visual and kinaesthetic

learning styles.

Quizzes, animation through time, life skills and creative art were just some of the

ways staff chose to demonstrate alternative ways of learning without writing.

Students embraced the day and enjoyed the variety of activities provided.

Cycling Success A selection of Year 10 students were chosen to take part in a six week course of

cycling coaching at Cyclopark in Gravesend. This followed on from the phenomenal

success in their curriculum lessons at the end of Year 9 when four students learned to

ride a bike for the first time!

The coach from Cyclopark,

Jimmy, was very impressed

by the students’ enthusiasm

and the progress they made

in such a short time. Their

perseverance was evident

and they were able to excel

using the fantastic facilities

and equipment that

Cyclopark had to offer.

The students were taught

about braking, bike control

and speed.

The cycling work culminated in a county

wide festival on the 6th November where

the Year 10 team had to compete against

other schools. First, they had to complete

the obstacle skills course which included

challenges such as slalom and limbo.

Following lunch, the students then took

part in the time trial event where they

had to complete laps of a course in the

quickest possible time.

Congratulations to all those who took part.

They claimed a 4th position in the time

trial and a fantastic first place in the

skills challenge.

SYMPHONIC QUEEN At the beginning of October KS4 and KS5

Programme 1 classes went to London for the

day. We travelled by train in our own

reserved carriage and then went for a long

walk to the Natural History museum. We

spent time in the bug room and had our lunch

in their very well organised picnic area.

We then walked round to the Royal

Albert Hall to a very special concert

of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

playing the music of Queen. This

was brilliant as we had two boxes

(we almost felt like Royalty) and a

great view of the stage. The music

was fantastic, we sang along,

drummed along and even did a bit of

air guitar.

We walked back to the station where we were treated to McDonalds to fill a hole

before catching the train home. Mr Walker said we had walked over 20,000 steps on

the day! A big thank you to all the staff that came with us for giving up their evening

to take us and have a fantastic day!

In safe hands ! Last month, the Level 2 Sports Volunteers completed a First Aid Course as part of

their qualification. Over the three week course, all students were taught the

following: how to perform CPR, when and how to use a defibrillator, how to

bandage various cuts, know what to do if someone was choking and how to put a

casualty in the recovery position. All the students were enthusiastic and keen to

learn about the different aspects of First Aid.

With a 100% pass rate, all students now have the relevant skills to help save a life

should the need ever arise; fingers crossed that it never does, but if it ever did,

then we know that we are all in safe hands!

Are you entitled to Free School Meals but don’t claim?

Did you know… just registering your child for Free School Meals means that the school

gets extra money?

The Government gives money to schools to help children from

lower income families do their very best. This funding is called

a ‘Pupil Premium’.

With this money we could further support and increase

opportunities for Teaching & Learning, social development and work related learning for

such students.

How does it work?

First check you qualify – it is not just if you are unemployed.

Registering is really quick and easy.

If you want your child to have a free, healthy meal at lunchtime that’s great –

they will get a free meal and save you money, plus the school also gets extra

money.

To see a full list of qualifying benefits, and get an application form, go to:

www.medway.gov.uk/schoolsandeducation/schoolmeals/applyforfreeschoolmeals

or, contact us and we can send a form home with your child.

If you are already registered for Free School Meals you do not need to do anything

further.

Moving House If you are moving house or need to make changes to your child’s

transport arrangements, you must first speak to Medway SEN

Department on 01634 306000. The transport company or driver do

not have the authority to make any changes without permission from

Medway Council.

As changes can take a few days to arrange you should ensure you give plenty of notice

beforehand.

Do not forget to also let us know of any changes to your address or telephone numbers.

You can now make payments online for things like dinner money and trips. Paying for items online is

quicker and easier for you, safer for children and more efficient for us.

The system is called School Gateway – and it’s available for you to use now providing we have your

email address and mobile telephone number.

1. Go to www.schoolgateway.com

2. When you visit the School Gateway website for the first time, please select ‘New User’ and

enter your email address and mobile telephone number you have registered with the

academy.

3. The system will send a PIN code to your phone; please enter this PIN code and your account

will be activated for you.

As soon as you’ve got the system set-up, you’ll be able to pay money to the academy online rather

than send cash or cheques.

In addition to payments you can also access your child’s timetable and attendance information.

on managing financially over the next year.

Shelter – 120,000 children in England will wake up homeless this Christmas. They may

be staying at a friends, in b&b accomodation or with family. If you are at risk of eviction

or homelessness then Shelter can help. www.england.shelter.org.uk

Foodbank – Emma and Kelly are able to provide foodbank vouchers for those families in
