Boyd's Map of New Jersey 2018 Windows Version Boyd Ostroff 2/5/2018 This map in Garmin's traditional .img file format covers all of New Jersey with portions of adjoining states. It has been tested on a Montana 600, GPSMap 60csx, Nuvi 3550, Nuvi 5000, Nuvi 205 and Dezl 760 but should work on many other Garmin devices. It's also compatible with Garmin's Basecamp and Mapsource software and should even work on legacy software such as Mobile PC and nRoute (with a few caveats). But it is not compatible with any Android or iOS apps. This document covers the Windows version of the map. Separate Macintosh and Linux versions are also available but the actual maps are identical and the only difference is the installation process. Download them all at the following link: https://boydsmaps.com/boyds-map-of-new-jersey-2018/ A separate map covering Southern New Jersey is available in a universal format that works on iOS, Android and computers. It also has some special features not available in this map: https://boydsmaps.com/boyds-map-of-the-pines-hd/ By proceeding with map installation, you agree to assume all risks associated with the process. The author will not be responsible for any computer or GPS problems resulting from following the instructions below. It should be simple and safe, but do not proceed if you aren't comfortable with assuming all responsibility. Before installing any software, it's always wise to have a full backup of your computer and GPS. Please read the License Agreement at the end of this document before installing the map. Getting started You must have Garmin Basecamp installed on your computer before installing the map.

Getting started You must have Garmin Basecamp installed on your computer before installing the map. Download the Windows version here, it is free http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435 If your computer does not meet the requirements of the current version, a legacy version is also available https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=7161 The map is also compatible with Garmin's older Mapsource software https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

Installation Installation is very simple. Just double-click the installer.exe file and follow the instructions.

After installing, start Basecamp and select the map from the dropdown menu. If you don't see a dropdown menu, you can select if from the Maps menu.

Set map detail to the highest level in order to see all features in full quality.

Uninstall old maps If you have previously installed Boyd's Core of the Pines or Boyd's Map of New Jersey 2012, they should be removed. These maps are obsolete and have many issues that were fixed in the new map. There is no reason to use either of these old maps today. After confirming that the new map works, go to the Windows Programs and Features control panel and select the old map(s) from the list. Click the uninstall button to remove the map.

Send the map to your GPS Connect your Garmin GPS to your computer via USB and click on it in the sidebar. You can also install on a SD card in the GPS or in your computer.

Choose the Install option from the Basecamp Maps menu. If this doesn't work for some reason, you can run Garmin MapInstall directly from the Start Menu; it is actually a separate program.

When MapInstall opens, click the Customize button to view all your installation options.

You should now see a window listing all maps that are already installed on your device in addition to any Basecamp maps that are available for installation. Check the box next to this map and be sure that any existing maps you wish to keep on your GPS are also checked. The advanced button allows you to only install part of the map if desired. Note: it is wise to do a full backup of your GPS and/or SD card before installing any new maps. This will allow you to restore it if something goes wrong. Just copy its contents to a folder on your computer.

Click the continue button and you'll see a summary of what will be installed on your GPS. In most cases this will only take a minute or two, it will not take "hours" unless you are working with very large maps on a very old GPS unit that has a USB 1.0 interface.

Now just wait for the installation process to finish. .

Enable the map on your GPS For old devices such as the GPSMap 60 and 76 series or eTrex Legend and Vista In most cases nothing will be required. But if you have multiple maps installed you may need to press Setup > Map. Select the ( i ) at the top of the screen if needed. This will display the current map name. Pressing the Menu button will show you options to enable/disable individual maps.

For newer handheld units This example shows the Montana 600, other devices may be a bit different. From the main menu screen press the > icon to open the "drawer", then press the Setup button. Now press Map > Select Map and enable he map. Now return to the map settings and choose Advanced Setup. Set map detail to Most. There will be a noticeable loss of quality if you don't do this.

For older Nuvi automotive devices This example shows a Nuvi 5000 but should be similar to other old models. From the main screen, press the Tools button, then Settings > Map. Set Map Detail to Most. Now return to the Map Settings and press the Map Info button. Enable the map by checking the box next to it. You may also enable City Navigator at the same time, this will allow you to do routing while displaying the topo map, but it will affect performance since both maps are actually being drawn.

For newer automotive devices This example shows a Nuvi 3550 but should be similar to other recent models. From the main screen press the Settings button, then Map & Vehicle. Set map detail to More, then return to the Map and Vehicle screen. Scroll down to the bottom of the list to myMaps and enable the map by checking the box next to it. You may also enable City Navigator at the same time, this will allow you to do routing while displaying the topo map, but it will affect performance since both maps are actually being drawn.

Customize the map style for your device if needed The appearance of the map is optimized for Basecamp and newer handheld GPS units. This style also usually works well on older Nuvi devices. But it won't look very good on a very old handheld or a newer automotive unit with glass hight resolution screens. The files in the Customize folder can be used to improve the appearance of the map on these devices. For older handheld GPS units, such as the GPSMap 60 and 76 or old eTrex series Download the free JaVaWa TYPchanger program here: http://www.javawa.nl/typchanger_en.html Either put the memory card containing the map into a slot in your computer or connect the GPS and press Menu > Setup > Interface > USB Mass Storage. Browse to find the Garmin folder on the memory card. Open the TYPchanger program and drag the gmapsupp.img file to TYPchanger. Now drag the 60csx.typ file from the Customize folder to TYPchanger. Click the Change button and then quit TYPchanger. The 60csx style uses thinner lines and is optimized for the 256-color palette of older devices. If you decide you don't like this style, you can use TYPchanger to re-install the default boyd2018.typ file that is also found in the Customize folder.

For newer automotive units When Garmin introduced the Nuvi 3700 series in 2010 they added a feature called "map themes". This feature was later added to all of their automotive devices. The custom theme should only be needed for automotive devices that have screens with a resolution of 800x480 pixels.

Page 10: Boyd's Map of New Jersey 2018 - boydsmaps.com – the art ...Boyd's Map of New Jersey 2018 Windows Version Boyd Ostroff 2/5/2018 This map in Garmin's traditional .img file format covers

If you're not sure of your device's screen resolution, you can look it up here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Garmin_products#N.C3.BCvi_Series Alternately, you can just install the custom theme and see if you like it. You can easily disable it if you don't. The problem with these newer automotive devices is that the lines on the map will all be too thin, making it harder to read. The custom theme simply makes the lines wider so the map has the same appearance as Basecamp. To install the custom theme, connect your device and browse to find the Themes folder. If you can't find a Themes folder then your device does not support this feature. Open the Map folder inside the Themes folder and you will see a number of .kmtf files. Copy the BoydMap.kmtf file from the Customize folder that was included in the download to the \Themes\Map folder on your automotive device.

Start your device and press Settings > Map and Vehicle (menu names may be different on some models). Scroll down the menu and select Map Theme. Make a note of the current theme setting - the default is called Garmin. The theme setting affects all of your maps, so you may want to use the original setting when you aren't using the topo map.

You will probably need to scroll way down to the bottom of the theme list to find BoydMap. Tap the button to make the new theme active and return to the map screen. If you don't like the appearance of the BoydMap theme you can change the setting back to its original value. There is no need to delete the BoydMap theme if you aren't using it.

Note that when you set your device for night mode, the map will change to a dark color scheme

The Nuvi 3400, 3500 and 3700 series and the NuviCam contain a special map file named gmapdem.img that provides 3d terrain. If enabled at the same time, 3d hill shading will be added to the map. You can enable the DEM (Digital Elevation Model) map that contains 3d terrains using the myMaps menu on your compatible automotive device. This can also be done with the Map Layers menu.

Usage Notes This map has a very high density of data, and as you zoom farther out more objects are displayed which makes your device work harder to update the screen. Older Nuvi's and handheld devices tend to handle this pretty well, but the newer automotive units seem to be especially "tuned" for Garmin's own City Navigator map. Use caution when zooming out on these devices, you can reach a point where the processor is stressed to the point of struggling to update the screen. In extreme cases this could cause your automotive device to freeze. I have found performance to be good at zoom levels of .2 miles and closer, levels of .3 miles and .5 miles generally work well too. If you zoom out farther than .8 miles you may encounter issues, and frankly the map was not designed to look good at these levels anyway. Experiment with your gps a bit to determine what its limits are. If you also enable the City Navigator map at the same time, that adds additional stress. If the device tries to auto-zoom way out while routing it can be problematic. There are no problems zoom way out in Basecamp, but you will notice some inconsistencies between the individual map tiles when you zoom past about 1.5 miles. This map has been an ongoing project over a number of years, so portions may behave differently.

Similar to Boyd's Map of the Pines HD, this map also has an HD coverage area in Southern New Jersey that contains enhanced details. You will find the same HD roads, trails and buildings in this map but it does not have the HD contours, property lines, historical buildings and other features of Pines HD map. The comparison below will give you some idea of the differences.
