Although our silks are untreated and are”ready-to-dye”, we find that with silk in general, occasionally small amounts of silk gum (the stuff left by the moths) is

still in the fabric. Where there is gum, the fabric will dye lighter. Finger prints and

oils from the factor or just handling can also cause splotchy dying as well.

Look for shiny areas in your silk - if there are any, you

should wash it before dyeing or wash all silk, if you want to be really safe!!! We use Synthrapol. A capfull of Synthrapol in a sink-full

of water or a 1/4 cup to a standard washing machine.

Keep in mind, all silk is better off hand washed and air dried.

Made for us in China in 10mm Habotai in a Hawaiian shirt pattern with a better collar. Expertly tailored, correctly proportioned & sized. Sewn with silk thread. This is one killer, fantastic silk shirt at a great price! Cut big - buy the size you normally wear. Women can wear them, too!

Sizing is NOTan exact science!

No one likes to hear it, but we have found in our 40 years of experience that no two clothing manufacturers agree on the proportions of each size. And forget about a meeting of the minds on the subtleties of 24 months vs. size 2 vs. 2 toddler, or 5/6 vs. sz 6, or whether there should be a huge leap between size 4 and 6 because of some growth spurt that is supposed to happen at that age, or not. Some companies cut oversize to allow for shrinkage, some don’t. We give up! We measure every product and provide those measurements on the website to help guide you in your size decisions. If a company’s sizes seem wacko, we try to get them to change, but it is up to them if they want to, and then we have to decide whether sales warrant continuing their product. There are also no guarantees regarding shrinkage, but in general, unless stated, our blanks are NOT pre-shrunk. Rib shrinks more than Jersey, and you get more shrinkage in length than in width. Sharp changes in temperature and lots of agitation cause more shrinkage.In the end, we have to leave it to you what size to buy. Check out our measurements on our website, and allow for shrinkage, usually about 3-5% in width, and 8-15% in length. Rayon Crinkle Gauze shrinks about 5” in the length on the average garment.

whiter areas in tie-dyeing. We can’t see the difference between optically whitened & not whitened in the tub dyed results.

Whether a garment or fabric is “Prepared for Dyeing” or not, Dharma recommends always pre-washing in HOT water and an appropriate

detergent like Synthrapol to remove dirt & unseen greases including fingerprints that can interfere with even dyeing. For tie-dyeing pre-washing is

not as important, unless water beads up on the fabric, indicating that the dye won’t penetrate well unless you thoroughly scour the fabric first.

PFD and RTD do NOT mean the fabric is pre-washed or scoured.

Cotton thread is an issue when garment dyeing. Store bought white clothing is usually sewn with

white polyester thread, which will not dye.
