Box Tops for Education.

So, keep bringing in those

box tops!

As you may know, pa-

pers have been in your

Friday folders asking

you to collect box tops.

What you might not

know is what box tops

are and what they do.

The General Mills Com-

pany puts little tabs on

boxes or bags for prod-

ucts like Trix cereal,

Nestle Juicy Juice, Betty

Crocker pizza crust, and

many more. It all

started in 1996, and

since then schools have

raised over $475 million

dollars! More than

30,000 schools are par-

ticipating in Box Tops

Who loves reading? Our

school of course! We espe-

cially love reading on Com-

munity Reader Day. Mrs.

Gilbert knows the most

about this special day so I

went to her to gather some

information. The people who

come to read are school

board members, administra-

tion, retired staff, other fac-

ulty members, and members

of our community. This is a

special day to celebrate Dr.

Seuss's Birthday, which is

on March, 2.

I spoke with two of my class-

mates about this special

day. They are Caitlyn

Kensinger said she loved

the wonderful books that

were read to us. Jay

Clark answered by say-

ing that he was thankful

that so many adults were

willing to sacrifice their

time to read us so many

amazing books.

So, as you can see, Com-

munity Reader’s Day is

one of the most antici-

pated days of the school

year.

Who’s New? By: Paige Gunnett

Second grade welcomes a new teacher for the remainder

of the school year. Mr. Blattenberger has joined the staff

at Williamsburg Elementary. I interviewed our new sec-

ond grade teacher, Mr. Blattenberger, to learn a little

more about him. He is a graduate of Penn State Univer-

sity. Go PSU! He thinks second grade is exciting, but also

a challenge. An interesting

fact is that he is the only male

teacher in the elementary

building. His favorite subject is

math! Mr. Blattenberger

because there is always a right

answer! Stop by room 151 and

welcome him to our school.

A survey was taken to answer the question, What would you like to

find in your Easter basket, a chocolate bunny or marshmallow peeps?

Students in grades k – 6, including teachers, were surveyed to get

their answer to this Easter Day question. Two hundred and sixty

three (263) students took part in the survey. The chocolate bunny

received 197 votes, as opposed to just 66 for marshmallow peeps. The

chocolate bunny was also the favorite for teachers, earning twelve of

the fourteen votes. Whatever your choice, I hope you have an EGG-

TRA Special Easter!

For this book corner I am going to share with you a fascinating book that I re-

cently read called The Hidden Girl “A True Story of the Holocaust” By Lola Rein

Kaufman with Lois Metzger.

The book The Hidden Girl “ A True Story of the Holocaust” is

about a young Jewish girl named Lola who is forced to go into

hiding after all her family members are killed. Lola hides with

two Ukrainian women through her journey. The first care-

taker gave Lola to the next woman due to threats of being

turned in for hiding a Jewish person. When Lola is with the

next caretaker named Anna she must live in a hole under-

neath a barn with just a dress made by her mother and a pair

of old shoes. Will Lola survive the Holocaust?

If you are interested in reading this book, stop by Mrs. Whe-

land’s room for a copy. This nonfiction book is worth 2 AR points. Also, please

be aware this book is most appropriate for middle school aged students.

Unfortunately this book is not a series. I would love to learn more about Lola’s

amazing journey.

The book I picked for our spring newspaper is Aliens for Breakfast by

Stephanie Spinner and Jonathan Etra. Illustrations were done by

Steve Bjorckman. The story begins when Richard

sits done to eat his breakfast and gets a little more

than cereal. An alien!!!! His name is Aric. However,

Aric isn’t an ordinary alien; he is on an important

mission to stop another alien from trying to take

over the world. Will Aric and Richard save the

world or will it be too late? Get a copy of this book

in the library to find out. Aliens for Breakfast is

worth 1 A R point. I hope you enjoy this book.
