Canada’s premier summer classical music festival celebrates its 40th Season at the Charles W. Stockey Centre in Parry Sound — on beautiful Georgian Bay July 19th to August 10th, 2019 Nearing the end of 2002, excitement was building at the Festival of the Sound as we watched the new Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts take shape on the Parry Sound waterfront. We knew that things would never be the same again. How could we bring a new, more professional look to the Festival without compromising the welcoming image nurtured over 23 years of concerts in “the old high school gym”. In December we met Sara Tyson, an illustrator and graphic designer who had recently moved to the region. She brought samples of her most recent work, including illustrations for Pacific Opera Victoria where Charles and Lois Stockey were strong supporters. From that meeting a wonderful partnership was born. We are proud to have Sara as the cover artist for this 40th Anniversary season brochure. Since graduating from Ontario College of Art, Sara has worked for over 35 years as illustrator and graphic designer. This dual role has increased her understanding of the function of illustration in communication arts and made her a thoughtful problem solver, gifts that are regularly called upon by the Festival of the Sound. Nearing the end of 2002, excitement was building at the Festival of the Sound as we watched the new Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts take shape on the Parry Sound waterfront. We’re having a 40th anniversary party and you’re invited! We’ve also invited as many friends as we could to celebrate with us, including my colleagues from festivals across Canada and around the world.

40 years into the future seems a lot further away than 40 years in the past. I wonder if that group of local music enthusiasts who attended the

exploratory concert presented by Anton Kuerti on August 5, 1979 could have imagined the Festival of the Sound as it is today. Could they have imagined that the Festival would now be the second largest tourism economic generator in the area?

You may notice that we have a Celebration Day planned for August 9th. Is it a series of concerts or is it a day-long party? Don’t miss this fun-fi lled day of music, an event only the Festival of the Sound could dream up.

It is hard to thank everyone who has played an important role in the Festival’s success, but I will try: thanks to Board members, volunteers, staff, artists, funding agencies, corporate sponsors, individual sponsors and donors, composers and of course, our loyal audience.

Come to the party!!

James Campbell, Artistic Director

The breadth and depth of this beloved festival on

the shore of Georgian Bay continues to astonish.

— Paul Ennis, The WholeNote, May 2018

If we can get this kind of art to mend the injustices of several centuries, maybe truth as well as reconciliation actually stands a chance.

on’t let the “Youth” in the title fool you. This 95-member orchestra is one of the fi nest in the country. The musicians work all summer under the mentorship of a world-class

faculty (including our own James Campbell) and internationally renowned conductor Michael Francis. The orchestra then undertakes Canadian and European tours. After their 2018 performance at the Festival of the Sound, the NYOC went on an overseas tour ending with an “upon invitation only” appearance at the Edinburgh International Festival. The Scotland Herald described the orchestra as “the most versatile and promising (group) the event has seen yet.” The NYOC is back at the 40th season of Festival of the Sound to present Mahler’s dramatic Symphony No. 5. The fourth movement, the famous Adagietto, was his love letter to his bride Alma. This short movement is familiar from the 1971 movie Death in Venice and for its performance by the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein at the funeral of Robert Kennedy.

ELEGANCESTOCKEY YOUNG ARTISTS

CONTINUUM CONTEMPORARY MUSIC

The Festival of the Sound’s commitment to name annual Stockey Young Artists began in 2005 but the commitment to young artists began much before that. More than 20 years ago, the Festival’s Discovery Series introduced the works of young composers who took part in a residency in Parry Sound under the mentorship of composer Gary Kulesha. We welcome Ryan Scott, a percussionist in Discovery Concerts and now Artistic Director of Continuum Contemporary Music. Ryan has invited three young composers who are named the Festival of the Sound’s 2019 Stockey Young Artists. Premieres of their works will be performed by an ensemble

FORM A LASTING LEGACY IN THE LAND THAT YOU LOVE

owes its very beginning to a legacy gift. In 1897, Dr. John R. Stone fi nanced the opening and management of the Parry Sound General Hospital. From humble beginnings serving 70 patients, many suff ering from typhoid, we’ve grown to a 70-bed acute care hospital operating a 24-hour Emergency that annually serves approximately 20,000 patients in Emergency alone. Dr. Stone’s lasting legacy has made our Parry Sound world safer.

A donation to the Foundation through your will off ers our generation the chance to contribute meaningfully to the next. It’s our fi nal statement about ourselves, those we care about and the place that we love. It is enduring.

FE S T I VA L A R T I S T S & E N S E M B L E S YO U T H M U S I C E D U C AT I O N F U N D

In the late winter of 2017, a group of Board members and supporters met for two days to brainstorm and plan for the next fi ve years in the life of the Festival of the Sound. This takes the Festival beyond the highly visible summer concert series to look at ways to promote the love of music in the Parry Sound region and far beyond. Youth Music Education was identifi ed as one of these ways.

In 2010, Fran Brown, a dedicated concert-goer from the Festival’s inception, made a generous donation to ensure that children would have the opportunities that she didn’t to experience classical music at a young age. The Youth Music Education Fund was established to ensure the future of Music Scores, the Festival’s unique initiative to bring professional musicians to Parry Sound twice each year for visits to all the elementary schools in the region. All children in Grades 4 to 6 are then taken to a formal concert at the Stockey Centre.

In order to enhance the Festival’s support of emerging professional artists through the Stockey Young Artist initiative and to broaden Music Scores to reach younger students and bring coaching and master class sessions to high school students, the Festival of the Sound will be asking for your help to grow the funds in the Youth Music Education Fund.

A tax deductible donation will make you part of this exciting initiative.
