BOWMONK 2000 – OPERATING MANUAL

BOWMONK 2000 Components Pedal Force Transducer: The Pedal Force Transducer (PFT) is a strain gauge sensor that shows the forces necessary to stop the vehicle in Newton. Connect the (PFT) using the plug located at the left corner under the handle of the Bowmonk 2000. When conducting the test the (PFT) is positioned over the brake pedal. Carry Handle: To allow for easy carrying of the Bowmonk 2000. Battery charger (Plug Pack): The battery charger is used to recharge the Bowmonk 2000 battery. This unit Is plugged into the main power source and the socket into the Bowmonk 2000. The Plug Pack must be 16 Volt AC at 1300Milli Amp.

LCD: This is a 16 character back-lit one line LCD and is used to view the input and test results. LED`S: The Bowmonk 2000 has two LED’s. The Red LED will show when the battery is being charged. The Green LED will show when the Bowmonk 2000 is ON. Printer Cover: The printer cover is to protect the paper and to provide the means to tear off the paper with the printed results. Direction of the Test: The arrow on the front panel must be pointing in the direction of travel when conducting brake OR acceleration tests. Pedal Holder: The pedal holder is used to keep the pedal sensor (pedal force transducer) attached to the Bowmonk 2000 when not in use. Unit Cover: The cover and base each have a non-slip neoprene foam pad for better grip. The use of seatbelts to hold the unit should not be needed. The unit has a cover that is removable but note that it can be clipped under the unit for storage during testing. If the cover fits too loosely you can simply bend the cover’s lugs as needed.

TO CHARGE BATTERY - Plug power pack into a 240-220 V power source and Plug Pack connector into Bowmonk 2000 socket and switch on at power point.

Positioning Unit in the Vehicle

Figure 1- Position of the Bowmonk 2000

1. Place Bowmonk 2000 on the front passenger side in a horizontal

position either on the front passenger seat or on the floor. The Bowmonk 2000 must be close to level. If on the seat, use seat belt to prevent unit from sliding during braking.

2. The cover can be clipped to the base of the unit during testing - its non-

slip rubber will give a stable contact surface. 3. The arrow on the Bowmonk 2000 must be facing the direction of travel. 4. If using the PFT, place the pedal force transducer on the brake pedal. It

simply slips over the pedal. Be careful when you drive as the PFT sensor increases the height of the pedal.

Conducting the Test First position and set-up the unit as described above. Testing a Vehicle’s Service Brake (Foot Brake)Accelerate the vehicle to the specified speed, place foot on brake pedal and apply steadily and firmly until vehicle has come to a complete stop. If using the pedal sensor (PFT), change setting from BRAKE TEST to FOOT BRAKE TEST on Mode of Operation. Accelerate the vehicle to the specified speed, place foot on pedal sensor (PFT) and apply steadily and firmly until vehicle has come to a complete stop. NOTE: All tests are set to BRAKE TEST mode except when using pedal sensor (PFT) which should be set to FOOT BRAKE TEST. Testing a Vehicle’s Hand BrakeFollow the same procedures as for Service Brake. Do this test in accordance with vehicle manufacturers instructions and test authority requirements.

Retest Once the Registration and Operator details are entered you can re-test the vehicle without re-entering all the data. The unit will ask, “Do another Test?” “Y/N”, select [ Y ] for yes and [ N ] for no. If the unit automatically turns off or the [ Begin ] key is pressed then all the data needs to be re-entered. Reprint Last Test The last test can be reprinted by pressing the Print key [ 0 ], this test is stored until any of the following occur:

(a) The unit is turned off (b) The [ Begin ] key is pressed (c) The BOWMONK 2000 mode is changed (d) A self-test is performed

Test SequenceSome customers like to enter all the data before they place the unit in the vehicle. This is OK provided that the final [ BEGIN ] or [ ENTER ] key press is done after the unit is stable in the vehicle. Cancelling a Printout During the printout of the test, it is possible to cancel the print. Just hold down the [ Del ] key.

Interpreting Results

The Bowmonk 2000 print out shows the following information: - Date and Time This is the data and time of the Brake-Test. Next Cal Date Date when Bowmonk 2000 is due for recalibration. Examiner Is the person who conducts the test. Rego This is the registration or VN number of the vehicle. Test Number This is the number of consecutive test that the unit has done.

Graph Shows the performance of the vehicle during braking as per below. Decel Max Maximum g force during test. Average Decel Refers to cumulative g force over duration of test. Test Duration Time from the application of the brake to the vehicle coming to a stop. Speed of the Test The speed at the start of the brake application. Stopping Distance The distance travelled after applying brakes until vehicle stops. This is calculated using the average deceleration. @ 20 mph Maximum Deceleration and extrapolated as if the vehicle were going 20 MPH regardless of the actual Speed of Test. This is calculated using the average deceleration. Performance Shows brake effort expressed as a percentage. This is also referred to as Braking Efficiency. Brake delay The time lag between the brake control being operated and the instantaneous brake effort. This value only has meaning if the PFT is used otherwise a default value is shown. Slope Angle of the brake tester during test. Signature This is the examiners signature. Company Name This is optional, see text. Explanation of graph Newton Scale The top axis on the graph refers to the amount of pedal pressure in Newton’s required to stop the vehicle. Approx. 10 Newton’s equals 1kg of force. The scale is adjusted based on the maximum Newton’s.

Bowmonk 2000 - Operating manual Page 15 of 17

Newton Graphic The thin line on the graph refers to the Newton’s or pedal pressure during test. Max Maximum Newton's during testing. Pk This is the Newton reading at Decel Max. Deceleration Deceleration is measured by g force. G Force Scale The bottom axis on the graph refers to g force. The scale is adjusted based on the maximum g force. (100 refers to 100% or 1g) G Force Graphic The thick line on the graph refers to the g force or deceleration during testing. Time Time is shown on the vertical axis and is measured in seconds.
