BOW is a weekend without kids, without spouses, without work or traffic, without cooking and cleaning. It’s a weekend al l about you. It’s about getting out of your comfort zone and doing something total ly unexpected. It’s about the adrenaline rush of trying something adventurous. It’s about meeting women just like you, or women who are total ly different, and forging friendships. It’s about shooting a gun for the f irst time, padd ling a kayak, or pul ling a f ish out of the water. It’s about the best-tasting meal you’ve ever had—and you cooked it in a Dutch Oven. It’s about sitting around a f ire at night and taking in the beauty of the stars and the moon. It’s about hugging a tree or cal ling a turkey. It’s about the outdoors. It’s about confidence, learning more about yourself and your limits, or your wil lingness to try new things. It’s al l about pampering women, but in a rustic kind of way. It’s about preserving the outdoor environment and its activities for future generations. It’s al l about Becoming an Outdoors-Woman.

BackgroundBecoming an Outdoors-Woman® (BOW) is a nonprofit, educational program serving women internationally in the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. Dr. Christine Thomas started BOW in Wisconsin in 1991 after deciding she wanted the same outdoor experiences with her friends that her husband enjoyed. She began coordinating workshops for adult women to learn outdoor skills in a woman-friendly atmosphere. All BOW workshops require teaching a balance of hunting and shooting, fishing and boating, and non-consumptive outdoor recreational activities (e.g. camping, outdoor cooking, natural crafts).

BOW has been operating in Oklahoma since 1994. It has been hosted by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, Oklahoma State University’s Leisure Studies Program, and since 2003, by Camp Fire Green Country.

Becoming an Outdoors-Woman fosters an environment of respect for the dignity and worth of all participants, volunteers, and instructors. Diversity is recognized as an important component of the program. Bias, prejudice, discrimination, and harassment in all forms and manifestations will not be tolerated. Discrimination based on an individual’s race, gender, religion, color, creed, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, pregnancy, or parental status is demeaning to all; impairs the process of education; and violates individual rights.

Fishing 101Who will catch the biggest fish?! Acquire the knowledge you need to be comfortable tying-on your own hook, picking the appropriate bait, and reeling in the fish. You’ll have lots of time to practice, swap fishing tales, and enjoy the waters of Fort Gibson Lake. Equipment is provided, or you can bring your own.

Fly CastingPerfect your fly casting skills so you can reel in “the big one” on your next fly fishing vacation! This class focuses on learning skills on land — no fishing will occur.

KayakingYou won’t be flipping upside down in these kayaks! Launch yourself from the shores of Fort Gibson Lake in a very stable, recreational kayak. Develop a sense of comfort with the equipment and then start paddling solo in a flat-water kayak. Expand your skills with plenty of paddling time and kayak games on the water. Alternative Fishing TechniquesGo beyond the fishing pole and develop a respect and appreciation for the alternative fishing methods of jug fishing and trot lines. The advantages and legalities of these methods will be discussed as you experience the effort involved in setting lines. You will make your own jug, release it into Fort Gibson Lake, and have the opportunity later in the evening to see what you caught!
