Independent Senior Living Introduction Bournemouth Borough Council believes that older people should be able to continue to live independently within the community for as long as they wish to do so. Our housing stock of unfurnished flats, bungalows and studio apartments is situated across the Borough of Bournemouth. It offers older people the opportunity of maintaining their independence within accommodation which benefits from an emergency call system linked to our 24 hour Central Control, and support provided by a Housing Officer. The Council is committed to providing choice for older people and uses a choice based letting scheme for allocating our housing stock. We currently have 13 Category 1 schemes, 16 Category 2 schemes and 2 Extra Care schemes. The Category 2 schemes and Extra Care schemes have a communal lounge, kitchen, laundry facility and many offer a guest bedroom facility. The majority of our schemes have gardens, which are maintained by our contractors, and all schemes benefit from a handyperson providing an enhanced housing service specifically for our residents. Types of Accommodation We offer three types of independent senior living accommodation; Category 1, Category 2 and Extra Care. The main features of these schemes are detailed in this publication. Our Category 1 schemes have an emergency call system linked to Central Control. Category 2 schemes have a daily visiting Housing Officer Monday to Friday. Our Extra Care scheme for the frail elderly has an on site Housing Officer from 9.00am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday and also benefits from access to care staff and a restaurant providing a hot main meal each day. Our Extra Care scheme for people with low level dementia benefits from 24/7 domiciliary care. Applying for Independent Senior Living housing If you wish to apply for Independent Senior Living accommodation you need to join the Council’s Housing Register. You can do this online at www.dorsethomechoice.org or you can request a paper application form by calling the Housing Enquiry Line on 01202 451467. For details on eligibility and how Council properties are allocated please see our website at www.bournemouth.gov.uk/housing Downsizing incentives for current tenants If you are a current tenant of Bournemouth Borough Council and wish to downsize to a smaller property you may be eligible for an incentive payment. The amount will depend on the size of the property you are moving from and the property you are moving to. Please speak to your Housing Officer for details if you are interested.

The scheme is designed for those people who are able to manage independent living and maintain a tenancy with identified support and care. The scheme benefits from on-site 24/7 domiciliary care.
