The Kettle River Lion’s Club is about to wrap up its annual Christmas hamper drive this Saturday with the delivery of over 100 boxes of food and other items to those West Boundary families and individuals in need.

Organizer Phil Gunhouse was pleased by the pub-lic’s generous response in helping the Lions fill the hampers with non-perishable goods to complement the club’s contribution of everything needed for a tra-ditional Christmas feast, including hams, potatoes, carrots, onions and some dessert items as well.

He did, however, lament the decrease in the Kelowna Food Bank’s (KFB) usual contribution to the hamper drive—the result, he suggested, of increased demand, seemingly throughout the province. KFB will, never-theless, still be donating several boxes of vegetables, including a large quantity of baby red potatoes, which the Lions will package themselves in boxes donated by Calona Wines.

Gunhouse was thrilled to report that Osoyoos’ AG Foods had “really stepped up” this year, by offer-ing to sell the Lion’s Club produce for the hampers at wholesale prices, which will likely save the club several hundred dollars. The hamper drive is the club’s most financially-demanding undertaking, making gestures such as that of AG Foods and manager Derek Morgan especially valuable.

“We like to have money left over at Christmas so that we are in a position to help folks with unexpected needs,” said Gunhouse, “such as help with transpor-tation to Kelowna for cancer treatment, or even car repairs. This makes the generosity of stores like AG Foods even more timely.”

The hampers go out on Saturday morning, as a con-voy of club members will be delivering the much wel-comed Christmas donation to all corners of the West Boundary.

Chairman Randy Kappes has announced the winner and two runner-ups in the West Boundary Community Forest Corporation’s logo competition.

West Boundary was awarded a community forest by the province in 2014. Through it, the community hopes to influ-ence the region’s forestry sector and help reduce the economic downswings the area has experi-enced historically, as well as see local values expressed in the way the forest is managed.

The corporation expects the

community forest to play an important role in the future of the area’s forestry sector and wanted to make sure its logo reflects those val-ues as well as forestry itself.

Area schools helped initiate the contest, which resulted in a logo the corporation con-siders effective in doing just that. The design will be prominently displayed on all things re-

lated to the community forest. The winner of the competition was

Julia Harcus. In second place was Trinity Griffiths and third place went to Rayanne Goddard.

Kappes and the rest of the board would like to thank all the artists

for their submissions and congratu-late the winners.

The Fun Spot

Quote of the Week:We can’t all be heroes because somebody has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.– Will Rogers (1879 - 1935)

Joke of the Week:A reporter was interviewing a 104-year-old woman: “And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?” the reporter asked. She simply replied, “No peer pressure.”

When it comes to buying life insurance, it’s easy to procrastinate and put off the decision to another day. Some people push the thought completely out of their minds thinking, “Why put money into something that won’t pay until after I’m dead?”

Good question, but life insurance isn’t really for you. It gives protection and security to the living—the spouse, children, and loved ones left behind after you die.

Depending on the value of the policy, the person named as the beneficiary could receive $10, 000, $100, 000 or even a million dollars. That money could go a long way toward paying funeral costs, the mortgage and day-to-day bills.

One of the major advantages of owning life insurance, in addition to the protection for your family, is that the death benefit is free of tax—and we all know that’s a good thing.

Typically, there are three types of insurance policies available—term, permanent and universal life. Each has their own unique advantages and limitations. I often get asked, “What’s the difference between term and permanent insurance?”

A term insurance policy covers a specific term period (or term), typically five, ten or twenty years. If you die during this period, your beneficiary receives the death benefit stated on the policy. If you die even one day after the policy expires, your beneficiary won’t receive anything.

The length of term is also important because after the term, you may not be insurable because your health may have deteriorated, or you may have contracted a disease or sickness. If you’re still insurable after the term ends, your premiums will likely increase because you’re older and a higher risk to the insurance company. Whatever your age though, your term insurance policy will have a lower premium than a permanent policy of the same value.

Term insurance meets a particular need and gives you affordable protection with the flexibility to choose from a wide range of term lengths.

A permanent life insurance policy covers you for as long as you live, rather than just a specific term. I often recommend that if you’re under 35, you should purchase permanent insurance so that you can have coverage for life at a level premium. In addition, the cash value that builds up over the years can allow you to take a loan for emergencies or used to pay premiums if you run into financial difficulties.

Universal life insurance is a form of permanent insurance that provides lifetime protection with lots of flexibility. With universal life, you have a policy fund, which is your cash value and acts like a cash reserve. Your premium is deducted from the reserve and the rest is left to accumulate interest which can be invested in a wide variety of investments including mutual funds.

You don’t pay tax on the interest in your policy fund unless you withdraw it or exceed the legal tax-deferral limit. If there’s enough in your policy fund to cover your premium, you can skip a payment because it will be deducted from the amount you’ve already paid into your reserve. I find this especially helpful for seasonal workers or workers that get laid off unexpectedly.

Life insurance is a key component of a personal financial plan. It’s investing in security so that your spouse and family won’t have to shoulder the responsibility on their own.

Why should you have life insurance?

Rezansoff re-elected chair

On Dec. 14 Midway RCMP responded to a single vehicle roll over at Eek road in Rock Creek. The vehicle had come in contact with an icy patch on the road

and flipped into the ditch. The mother and daughter occupants sustained minor scratches and were treated by EHS and released on scene.

Rezansoff re-elected Once again, Teresa Rezan-

soff has been voted in as board chair for the School District 51 (SD51) board of education. Re-zansoff, who also sits as presi-dent of the B.C. School Trustees Assocation (BCSTA), was voted in at the regular board meeting on Dec. 8. Cindy Strukoff was voted in as vice-chair.

“You’re always humbled by the trust that people put in you,” said Rezansoff.

Rezansoff said the new board, which was elected in De-cember 2014, has really gelled well and is accomplishing a great deal. “It’s been a great year. I think we’ve all come with individual strengths that I think are really complementary of each other. For a new board, it was a really smooth transition and we’re advancing quickly.”

New to the board this year were Katie Jepsen and Mark Danyluk.

In other voting at the meet-ing, Cathy Riddle was voted trustee representative to BCSTA provincial council; David Reid was voted as the trustee rep-resentative for the B.C. Public Schools Education Association (BCPSEA) council; and Jepsen was voted as trustee represen-tative to the Okanagan Labour Relations Council (OLRC).

CLES Maker’s Day

At the board meeting, the trust-ees heard a pre-sentation from Shaun Lockhart, principal, and Kevin Sawyer, parent, about the Christina Lake Elementary School Maker’s Day, which took place in November.

“It was a day they had where all the students made some-thing,” said Rezansoff. “The stu-dents planned for a project and did it with the help of lots of mostly dads. They did all kinds of things such as build shelves and tables and birdhouses. Whatever the kids could con-ceptualize, they built, from kin-dergarten on up. It was just a fantastic full day.” City says thanks

Representatives from the City of Grand Forks attended the meeting and thanked the school board for allowing them to use school board property (near Overwaitea) during the reconstruction of City Hall af-ter the fire.

“We provided them with space we had downtown to re-locate to,” said Kevin Argue, su-perintendent of School District 51. “They presented a beautiful painting to give to the board in recognition. That was a really neat moment at the beginning

of the meeting.” Non-instruc-tional days

SD51 also an-nounced recently

that there would be two addi-tional non-instructional days in the district on Friday, Feb. 12, 2016 and Monday, April 18, 2016.

“These would have been days that students attended school but with this announce-ment, those two days will now be non-school days’ for the students of School District 51,” said Argue.

“Buses will not run those days and schools will not be in session.”

The two days are being pro-vided to teachers for training and colloboration regarding the new curriculum. The Ministry of Education has announced that the new Kindergarten to Grade 9 curriculum will be implemented by teachers start-ing in September 2016. The new curriculum will be in trial phase for Grade 10-12 starting next year. Talking break

During their talking break, the board discussed how to embed the expertise and life ex-periences of parents and com-munity members into student’s learning.

“It was really good,” said Re-

zansoff. “We’re making sure that we’re focus-ing our conversations around student learn-ing, student succeses, and the new curricu-lum.”

Letters Policy

I was at a school Christmas play last week, listen-ing to the principal describe the school’s “Secret Santa” campaign, a program designed to ensure that kids from economically-challenged families wake up to a few gifts on Christmas morning. This is a noble gesture, to be sure, and certainly in the spirit of the season, when “giving” be-comes even more relevant.

I could but help wonder, however, what Christmas would look like without all of the hyped-up materialism, created, in large part, by retail-ers scrambling to make their year-end look respectable. I had hoped by now, 16 years into the 21st century, that we, as a culture, had made a much greater effort to scale back on the consumption that has long been the trademark of the season; instead, choosing to provide all our youngest citizens a valuable opportunity to play their part in the benevolence that Christ-mas is supposed to reflect, rather than plying them with toys and electronics as tokens of our affection.

Believe me, I am as guilty as the next person! The morn-ing of Dec. 25 will see me eyeing a huge pile of goodies bursting out of a Christmas stocking. Mind you, there’ll be no $200 video game amongst the booty, just a lot of small, somewhat pragmatic gifts that will save me having to buy the items myself for a few months, or give me a special little treat to look forward to. While this event is borne not wholly out of consumerism, but, rather, a Christmas tradi-tion that seems unlikely to ever disappear, I still breathe a quiet sigh of compunction when I finally sit back and peruse my mountain of merchandise.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m no Grinch, but when I see peo-

ple stressed at this time of year because they simply can’t afford to spend hundreds of dollars on gifts for people they may not even like that much, it just seems wrong.

You know, I’d love to hear from those readers who do not allow themselves to fall prey to the commercial trap-pings of Christmas and, perhaps, do something entirely removed from that model. That’d make for a good article, no doubt!

Speaking of consumerism, a tradition from my youth spent in England perhaps tops all. On Boxing Day, many of the villagers would gather at one of the local pubs for the annual “Pram Race,” which, as the name suggests, en-tails the racing of prams, or, in North Ameri-can lingo, baby buggies. However, there was a twist to this slightly egregious event, and that was that each pram had to carry an adult pas-senger, which made pushing the often wobbly, badly sprung vehicles up the fairly steep main

road a challenge met only by the fittest villagers. And that’s not all.

In true English fashion, the consumption of ale had to be somehow included in the festivities. To make the pram racers’ job even more daunting, each duo was required to stop at all six pubs that dotted the main road, where both would have to quaff an entire pint of beer.

You can imagine how the competitors felt after the first couple of pit stops, but what about hitting the final stretch, their bellies full of froth and ready to vomit? Well, needless to say, some of the gutsy prammers did just that, but we didn’t mind; it was all part of a tradition that made Christmas memorable.

Too much stuff?

The Weather Network’s winter forecast has been re-markably accurate thus far, as temperatures throughout the province remain mild, with most areas, including Boundary, experiencing below normal snowfall.

While higher elevations are seeing the snow pack gradually deepen, many communities, Rock Creek, Midway and Greenwood among them, are getting rain, or wet snow, which is simply not translating into an ac-cumulation of the white stuff. On the other hand, many ski hills are poised for a potentially good season. Despite the disappointment caused by the non-opening of Mt. Baldy, other resorts are faring quite well in the early go-ing, some dramatically better than last year at this junc-ture.

But there’s a dark twist to the warmth, which is in large part due to the fact this year’s El Niño, which the World Meteorological Organization says is one of the strongest on record.

The same El Niño which is delivering warmth to Can-ada, is also affecting parts of Africa with above-average temperatures and a delay in the life-giving rainy season.

In South Africa, which is at the tail end of the South-ern Hemisphere’s spring, highs near or exceeding 40° C were recorded in early December. As for the lack of rain, the South African government has declared a drought disaster in several provinces. The country is in the midst of its worst drought since 1982, and the dry conditions extend throughout the region

And in parts of the continent where the rains have come, they’ve been too much to handle. In Kenya, for example, torrential rains have killed at least 20 people, and authorities in Uganda are warning people in land-slide-prone mountain areas to move if they can.

In Ethiopia, the government has said at least 10 mil-lion people will need food assistance due to harvest fail-ure, according to the BBC, including millions of chil-dren.

We here at home lament the fact that next year’s grow-ing season may be impacted by this weather pattern, while many around the globe find their lives forever changed by El Nino’s wrath. Perhaps mankind is to be blamed, or simply a cyclical shift in the earth’s climate; whatever it is doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon.

A dark twist

Letters to the editorFair association extends thanks

If only in my dreams

Another year has slipped by and despite some challenging times this summer with the wildfire in our area, we man-aged to have a very successful fall fair.

The fair’s success is always

due to the countless volunteers and the generosity of our local communities, businesses and non-profit societies. This past summer was quite stressful for a lot of people in our area due to the fire, but you all gave tremendous effort to make the fair a success.

On behalf of the fall fair association, I would like to

extend our sincere thanks to you all and wish you a safe and happy holiday season.

Looking forward to seeing you all in 2016!

Bill Bosovich, President,

Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Association

Editor, The Times:

A quick year-end report from the southern frontier.

I’ve taken a job for the Christmas season at a call cen-tre with the Harry and David Corpora-tion. This company has been in business for over 80 years and is a big con-tributor to the local economy. This year I am one of several thousand employ-ees hired to meet the demand of the Christmas market.

When an outfit has to process so many new seasonal hires, some mistakes are bound to happen. I am an example of two of those mis-takes. The first is that they hired a deaf guy like me to work on the phones. The second gaffe is that HR swapped my first and last names around. I am known around here as Kelly Patrick. It’s something like getting into the witness protection pro-gram, only to discover you are in an economy class seat.

I work in customer service—helping people get their orders tweaked by correcting an ad-dress or the delivery date or such things. I also help online customers navigate the website.

The other day the company website was offering free ship-ping on select items; and if you clicked on that announcement you would see a list of gifts the

deal applied to. One customer called in to complain the web-site wasn’t applying her ship-ping discount when she entered

the code. She had thought the offer applied to all of the products.

I pointed out that the gift she was purchasing wasn’t on the list of select items. But she continued to insist she be given the discount say-ing that this gift was quite obviously

a select item; after all, it was what she wanted and she had selected it.

An update on my continu-ing lessons on the piano—I can now play two songs using both hands at the same time. One is Merrily We Roll Along and the other is Mary Had a Little Lamb. That sounds impressive if I say it fast enough so you aren’t given a chance to realize they are the same tune.

The house is decorated for Christmas. While it is nothing as grand as my dearly departed Special K would have put up, I think she would approve. My being Canadian and her love of Christmas were two precursors that led to our marriage. You see, she loved Christmas deco-

rating so much she would be-gin right after Thanksgiving; by moving to Canada, she got an extra month each year to deck the halls.

Having severe hearing loss and a very short attention span, I spent many years thinking the lyrics the Christmas song I’ll Be Home for Christmas were celebrating the anticipa-tion of someone who was actu-ally going home for Christmas. Whenever I heard that song begin I would go to my warm, fuzzy happy place.

It was only a few years ago that I paid attention to the lyr-ics long enough to discover the somewhat sad final line, “If only in my dreams.” This year that song has a special meaning for me.

From the Kelly household to yours—a warm and happy

Christmas to all and best wishes for the new year.

And remember, “Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and just listen.” Bobby (age 7)

[Quote shamelessly lifted from Nov. 15 issue of the Kettle River Echo—thanks Gail, et al.]

While it is nothing as grand as my dearly departed Special K

would have put up, I think she would approve.

Greenwood and Midway Elementary students teamed up last Thursday to present their production of Santa’s Holiday Hoedown. Following the con-cert, students held an entrepreneur market, through which they raised over $600 for their community.

West Boundary Elementary School students presented a wonderfully-styled and well-acted production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol last Wednesday evening. (Above) Carol-lers provide some soothing relief from Ebenezer Scrooge’s mean-spiritedness. (Below) Scrooge enlightens a trio of workers as to his disdain for Christmas. As we all know, even Mr. Scrooge eventually got into the spirit of the season.

The BCSS production of the Elvis-infused mu-sical comedy All Shook Up completed its week-long run on Tuesday and cast and crew are to be applauded for four near-flawless performances.

Directed by drama teacher Sarah Tripp as the major component of her program’s fall se-mester, the musical was sold out for each of the four public per-formances, as audiences were rewarded with a two-hour production packed with great music, lots of comedy and visuals worthy of professional theatre.

Set in a small, dreary U.S. Midwest town in the 1950s, All Shook Up follows the antics of drifter Chad, a motorcycle-riding “roustabout,” as he attempts to inject some life back into a population suffocated by the Robert Macfarlane De-cency Act, which outlaws “loud music, public necking and tight pants.”

Played by Brandon Fillmore and Kevin Thomas, who alternated as the male lead throughout the four performances, Chad sets about shredding the Decency Act with every step, gyrating and singing his way into the hearts of the townspeople,

and culminating in marriages between the most unlikely characters. Along the way, he shakes the heart of Natalie (played by Shelby Condon and Tean-na Shipton), falls in love with a “man” named Ed (actually Natalie in disguise) and brings some spirit back into the life of widower Jim, all amidst a soundtrack of songs made popular by Elvis Presley.

Fillmore and Thomas both sang and acted superbly. While Fillmore dem-onstrated a slightly better vocal range, Thomas was sharper with his comedic timing, though both were believable in the role and enjoyable to watch. So too were Condon and Shipton; both actors showcased a genuine flair for musical theatre, which generally demands vocal and physical gesturing that verges on ex-aggeration.

The comedic elements of the script were skillfully delivered by the large cast, including Kel-lan Shipton (as Chad’s sidekick Dennis and, in a delightfully subtle cameo, a bus driver im-patiently awaiting his passen-gers arrival), Keegan Kappes (a perfectly nerdy Dennis), Thao Atkinson and Beatrix Balch (as jaded bar owner Sylvia) and Kim Faminoff and Charlotte Hildebrand , who brought just the right degree of aloofness to the part of Sandra.

Also strong was Dylan St. Germain in the role of widow Jim Haller (Natalie’s father). St. Germain brought a measuredly

understated charm to his character, and his rich baratone, while not always pure, was nevertheless engaging.

Emmalee Williamson and Alex Met-calf split duties as waitress Lorraine, teaming up with Braydon Hanson and Regan Christinson as conservative May-or Matilda’s son Dean, in several syrupy duets that elicited sighs of approval from the audience.

Hailey McLaren and Quentin Rel-koff provided some of the show’s fun-niest moments as megaphone-wielding Mayor Matilda and henpecked Sherrif Earl. Watching Earl work up a sweat as he pushed his boss around in a miniature car proved priceless, and seeing them come together as a couple in the final scene was pure pathos.

Rounding out the cast were Megan Ewing and Jada Goodson, who per-formed tirelessly in their support roles as townspeople.

Technical support was provided by Jack Fenwick-Wilson and Wyatt Parker, while Chyann Dagg helped out with sets. Clinton Boardman was director Tripp’s assistant, Nicole Hecht did costume al-terations, Christine Hladych styled hair and Kelly Fenwick-Wilson contributed general support throughout the produc-tion.

As for Tripp herself, she did another excellent job in bringing all the compo-nents together to offer West Boundary an evening of tremendous entertainment, and, judging by the audience response, next year’s production cannot come soon enough.

Shook Up

shakes it up ANDREW TRIPP

Boundary Creek Times Reporter

The BCSS production of the Elvis Presley-inspired musical comedy All Shook Up attracted over 250 people to its four night run, which came to an end on Tuesday evening. Audiences were treated to numerous energetic musical numbers, intertwined with both dramatic and humourous dialogue in a 1950’s story inspired by Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

Town of Phoenix is growing rapidlyChronicles of Boundary Country from the pages ofThe Boundary Creek Times Volume VII, No. 2 –

September 23, 1899➤ C.P.R. Enters the Bound-

ary District – “Part of the Boundary branch of the Colum-bia & Western Railway was in-spected this week by Dominion

government and railway officials, and turned over to the C.P.R. op-erating depart-ment. Thursday

a f t e r n o on , the first pas-senger coach ever seen in the Bound-ary country rolled into the Cascade yards with a party of in-specting officials aboard. A flat car, with a canopy, had been pushed ahead of the train and the party had ev-ery opportunity to give the roadbed and bridges a most rigid inspection.”

➤ Further west along the line, “track-lay-ers are at Eholt and should reach Greenwood in fourteen days. They will be at the Boundary Creek trestle (at the north end of the city) in about

10 days. Three or four days will then bring them across the trestle and to the station grounds in the city. At that time, an average of 100 passengers a day will come to Greenwood. Many of them will be men seeking investment. First impressions are often last-ing. The streets to the business portion of the city from the sta-tion should be made the best in the city.”

➤ Dominion Copper Co. - “The Dominion Copper Co., Limited, one of the largest orga-nizations of the kind in Canada, has purchased and amalgamated well-known copper mines of the Phoenix camp in the Boundary district, consisting of the Brook-

lyn, Standard, Stemwinder, Mon-tezuma, Rawhide and Idaho; the most important consolidation of copper mines that have been brought under one management in British Columbia.” (ed. – A few years later, the company would take over management of the ill-fated smelter at Boundary Falls.)

➤ Phoenix is Booming – “The town of Phoenix is growing rapidly. There is a strong demand for business lots, and George Rumberger, the owner of the townsite, is finding some diffi-culty to fill all the applications for lots on the main street. The sev-eral hundred men at the mines, earning good wages, have to live near the mines in the absence of speedy and cheap means for car-rying them any distance to and from their work. Where so many men are congregated, hotels and business houses are sure to fol-low.

Rumberger was the first to take advantage of these conditions. He secured the surface rights for some of the mining claims, sub-divided into lots and placed them on the market.”

Guides and Pathfinders have made 12 toques and 15 scarves out of fleece fabric for the home-less as a part of their community service, and sewed felt stuffies for Victim Support.

They also created Christmas cards for the community which were hand delivered Friday with a rendering of We wish you a merry Christ-mas.

The girls meet every Wednesday and experi-ence many new activities covering all aspects of the world around them and varied facets of Girl Guides. These new adventures earn them badges towards challenges.

The Pathfinder program is three years and can earn them the Canada Cord, the top award in Guiding at this level, and is two high school credits towards graduation.
