The Rock Creek fire is now 75 per cent contained; however, the Boundary region, as well as much of the South Okanagan and even the Fraser Valley, remains blanketed by smoke from several large wildfires south of the border. The smoke is not only making life difficult for many local residents, it is also hamper-ing the continued firefighting efforts along the southern corri-dor of Hwy 33, making aerial surveillance and water bombing impossible.

BC Wildfire Service coordinator Glen Burgess, while refer-ring to the fire as “well-behaved,” is certainly looking forward to the smoke clearing, which will enable airborne firefighting tactics to resume. While having helicopters grounded saves B.C. taxpayers $6,000 per hour, a resumption of water bombing will almost certainly bring a quicker end to the fire danger that still exists.

To the south, the group of wildfires burning in central and northeastern Washington is now the largest in state history,  a fire official said Monday.

The so-called Okanogan Complex of five wildfires now cov-ers 103,829 hectares (256,567 acres).

Rick Isaacson, a spokesman for crews battling the blazes state-wide, said the complex measured just over 103,600 hectares (400 square miles), slightly more than the 2014 Carlton fires. The fires grew by more than 6,734 hectares (26 square miles) last Sunday and were expected to spread even more in coming days.

Further east, another fire known as the Stickpin fire is just ki-lometres south of the Canadian border and is threatening Grand Forks and Christina Lake. At this point, however, there have been no evacuation alerts issued. Isaacson said the Washington fires could burn for several more months.

About 1,250 firefighters are currently battling the fires, which are just 10 per cent contained and are threatening over 5,000 homes. The firefighters included about 700 Washington Nation-al Guardsmen.

The Paulson Summit fire, 15 kilometres northeast of Chris-tina Lake, is in a mop-up stage and currently 80 per cent con-tained, while the Lynch Creek fire, 25 kilometres north of Grand Forks, is only 10 per cent contained though not threatening any structures or communities.

It has consumed 250 hectares to date.

The Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Association has announced that the Rock Creek Fall Fair is on schedule for September 19 and 20. “The fairgrounds have been un-touched by the Rock Creek wildfire”, said a spokesperson, “and, while our hearts and hands are with our friends and neighbours during this difficult time, we are still working away to bring about another ‘best ever’ fall fair.”

The scheduled line up of entertainment and activities has not changed, and the fair will again act as a yearly re-minder to locals and visitors what a great area the Bound-ary is, particularly at this very emotional time.

Fair organizers have received many calls from people looking to donate towards the relief effort in the communi-ty; the RCBFA is in contact with local service organizations and once a fund has been established, the information will be posted on the fair website (rockcreekfallfair.ca).

“We deeply appreciate the goodwill of our friends, fam-ily and complete strangers at this time of great trauma,” the spokesperson added. “We owe a huge thank you to all the emergency responders and services support crews and vol-unteers that have, and still are, working to help us stabilize and recover.”

Fall fair will go ahead Sept. 19-20

ther structural damage. Due to the current weather conditions, however, the actual status of the fire cannot be completely as-sessed, as air surveillance proves impossible.

“The danger will be when the

weather changes” Burgess said. “The winds will come up and blow the smoke out, and then we’ll see what we’ve got and how the wind is going to affect the fire.”

Burgess’ update elicited sever-al rounds of applause, as the audi-ence showed its appreciation for the firefighters’ efforts. Burgess let the residents know that those on the front lines were extremely moved by the community sup-port that they have received since their arrival.

“The guys see all the signs that are posted along the highways, and that really affects them,” Burgess said. “They take pictures which they’ll take home with them or post on their Facebook pages.”

He estimated that firefight-ers would be in the fire zone for several weeks to come and that residents should expect the fire to smoulder until winter arrives.

Residents also heard from several disaster relief agencies, along with the Regional District

of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB), which outlined their relief efforts going forward.

Clause Burchert spoke on be-half of Samaritan’s Purse, a non-denominational Christian orga-nization that provides disaster

relief worldwide.The organization pledged

to assist those residents whose homes were destroyed or dam-aged by providing equipment and manpower to clean up proper-ties. Volunteers will be recruited to help residents sift through the remains of the burnt structures and recover anything deemed important, as well as help clear concrete slabs in preparation for rebuilding. Burchert was asked if the team would be able to remove the hazardous metal roofing that had survived the fire, and indi-cated that the equipment they had brought with them would be capable of removing anything the residents required. He did, how-ever, stress that at this early junc-ture in the recovery operation, a plan for complete removal of de-bris from the area was not yet in place.

As part of that discussion, Alan Stanley, the regional dis-trict’s director of environmental services, informed residents im-pacted by the fire that the Rock

Creek Transfer Station is current-ly open every day until Sept. 1, and that there will no charge for fire-related waste.

Accompanying the Samaritan’s Purse team are several chaplains, who work alongside the agency

providing emotional and spiritual support for those working on the front lines, as well as those im-pacted in the community.

“We are just here for you.” said one chaplain. “We come from all over and we are here because we care.”

Also providing relief is the Mennonite Disaster Service, which dispatched several members to assist those who are either un-insured or under-insured as they make their way back to a semblance of normalcy.

The Mennonite Disas-ter Service  is a volunteer network of Anabap-tist churches that responds to those affected by disasters in Canada and the United States.

Also in atten-dance were many volunteers from the Red Cross, which was the first relief agency to attend the disaster. Repre-sentative Gary Car-

leton was quick to praise the efforts of Penny Feist and her co-workers for es-tablishing the emergency centre so quickly, and pledged ongoing support for those in need during what he termed as a ‘recov-ery’ phase. The Red Cross is actively scheduling 45-min-ute appointments for those affected by the fire, at which time residents will be able to describe their needs go-ing forward.

There were concerns voiced by several residents regarding aspects surround-ing the recovery effort. One resident complained about the current location of the Resiliency Centre, which is more than 30 km from Westbridge, where most of the destroyed homes were located. The resident sug-gested that some people impacted by the fire may not be able to get to the Midway centre, and felt it

should be moved to a location closer to the Hwy 33 corridor. In response, RDKB director Vicki Gee outlined the district’s plan to eventually move the centre to the Westbridge Community Hall, though stressed that this plan was in a very early stage and a timeline for re-location was yet to be formulated. Another ques-tion related to those residents who had left the area who may need to be contacted and kept apprised of developments. Gee explained that the Red Cross had kept meticulous records since the opening of the Resiliency Centre, and that all the residents who had been registered would be able to be contacted regardless of their current location.

Gee also touched upon the do-nation situation, suggesting that donors have been so generous that there is now an abundance of clothing and food in place, which is currently being dispatched to various thrift stores and food

banks in the area. She also rec-ommended that potential donors contact the Red Cross to deter-mine exactly what victims need prior to making a donation.

For those wishing to make cash donations locally, both the Kettle River Museum and the Kettle River Lions Club have set up fire relief bank accounts at area financial institutions. Lion’s club president Les Jackman informed attendees of Monday’s meeting that the Kettle River Lions Club Fire Relief Fund has been estab-lished at the Osoyoos branch of the CIBC, though donations can be made at any CIBC outlet, ei-ther in person or electronically. For more information, donors may contact Jackman directly at 250-446-2096.

The Kettle River Museum has set up a fund at the Heritage Credit Union in Greenwood, with all donations going through the museum. The museum can be reached at 250-449-2614.

Former reporter offers to dig into archivesFrom his new home in Or-

egon, former Times reporter Pat Kelly is watching the wildfire sit-uation helplessly.

He read of the offer by Nicole Ferrier of True Blue Photography of free photo sessions, and it oc-

curred to Kelly that with the loss of photos was likely the loss of scrapbooks and event photos.

He can help with that.If anyone knows of any photo

that he had taken in his tenure as a reporter for the Times and who

would like a new digital copy, he would be happy to provide the copies for free. It would be help-ful if you could narrow down the date.

Also, the Times may not have the newspapers themselves to

replace scrapbook articles, but eTearsheets (digital copies of each page) are available going back as far as May 2011.

For photos, get in touch with (Patrick) Kelly on Facebook, or email the reporter’s email (re-

Letters Policy

Now that the Rock Creek fire is nearly fully contained, and Hwy 33 has reopened, victims of the disaster are faced with the arduous task of rebuilding their lives. From all accounts, most that lost homes will rebuild. Undoubted-ly, however, there are many who were uninsured and for them the expense of constructing another dwelling from the ground up is simply not financially viable.

Many of those were likely shocked to learn that they would receive no financial assistance from the provincial government; a kick in the teeth in my estimation, but, unfortunately, a matter of legislation. I have little doubt, how-ever, that many will come forward with offers of help as far as services are concerned; if noth-ing else, this situation has clearly shown that those who can help are, and I can but salute those willing and able to support victims, be they friends, neighbours or simply people in need.

~~~There was some bad news from Environment Canada
last week, forecasting that this dry stretch in B.C. is far from over, with the current drought expected to last until at least November.
This challenging weather pattern is the result of the phenomenon known as El Nino, which is caused by large pockets of unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean. These, in turn, force land and air temperatures upward and, temporarily at least, wreak havoc on the climate. This year the system has resulted in temperatures three to four degrees warmer than normal, and created dangerously dry conditions. The wildfire season, which began in April, re-portedly could last until the middle of November.
Moreover, this particular model of El Nino, dubbed the “Godzilla El Nino” by NASA scientist Bill Patzert, is ex-pected to leave Canada’s west coast struggling with a low snowpack, little rain and unseasonably warm tempera-tures throughout the winter.
It’s not all bad news, however; the weather pattern could
dump considerable moisture on arid California, perhaps signalling the beginning of an end to the drought that has crippled one of the largest food-producing regions in the world.
For B.C. residents, though, it stands to be another un-certain winter, and, unless Godzilla somehow calms down,
next spring may prove another very challeng-ing season.
~~~Many were disappointed by the cancellation

of the Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival, and I count myself amongst them. I feel terrible for the organizers Kris and Kia, though obviously the correct decision was made. As my wife and I were driving through the area last Saturday, we were wondering if perhaps it could have gone ahead, as all seemed calm, with no appar-

ent threats in sight. Just an hour later, the region was once again blanketed

by smoke from Washington State, and we looked at each other and nodded. “Yes, Ponderosa had to be cancelled.”

Let’s hope they are able to make a go of it next year and establish the festival as another great Rock Creek tradi-tion.

~~~I had an opportunity to chat with Christy Clark during
her brief visit to the Midway Resiliency Centre on Aug 16, and found her likeable and easy to talk to. I was impressed by her ability to move seamlessly through the group of fire victims that had gathered, either willingly or by co-incidence, to listen to what the premier had to say about the disaster. While certainly not the recipient of a hero’s welcome, I do believe Clark provided those impacted by the fire some reassurance that their plight did not go un-noticed.
Let’s hope the government’s financial aid package matches the premier’s enthusiasm for hugging youngsters and chatting with the local paper man.
Those who can help, are
The humanitarian response to the Rock Creek wild-fire has, once again, clearly illustrated how important the agencies that provide disaster relief have become.
Without the likes of the Red Cross, Samaritan’s Purse and the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS), all of which are in operation at Midway’s Resiliency Cen-tre, it is difficult to imagine how victims would survive after a disaster strikes. Volunteers from across the na-tion and globally are mobilized within hours, bringing critical supplies and support to those impacted by fire and other disasters.
The Red Cross was founded to protect human life and health. It is by far the most recognizable of the relief agencies, the bold and simple red cross always highly visible in areas of strife around the world, pumping millions of dollars of aid annually into disaster relief.
The Canadian Red Cross has nearly a half billion dollars in assets; a remarkable figure when you con-sider it all began with donations. Wise investments, in addition to ongoing donations, have left the organiza-tion ready and able to assist wherever and whenever needed, and their presence at the site of Boundary’s own disaster has been extremely important.
Samaritan’s Purse was founded in 1970 by American evangelist Franklin Graham, son of renowned spiritu-alist Billy Graham, and Baptist minister Robert Pierce. The organization provides aid to people in physical need as a key part of Christian missionary work. With assets of $300 million, Samaritan’s Purse is among the largest relief agencies on the planet.
Their role in this relief/recovery effort will be to as-sist those residents who lost homes to the fire by sifting through burnt remains, clearing their property of de-bris and preparing concrete slabs for the commence-ment of new home construction.
Another agency in attendance in Midway is the Mennonite Disaster Service, whose slogan is “Re-sponding, Rebuilding, Restoring.” While not as large as the Red Cross or Samaritan’s Purse, the MDS has been in existence for more than 60 years, and has 1200 active volunteers.
This disaster has been just that, yet Boundary resi-dents have found solace in the fact that there is much help available out there, and it is here now.
Letters to the editor
Information officer needed on fires
The recent and ongoing Rock Creek fire clearly illustrates the need for a pub-lic information/liaison officer on large fires throughout B.C., especially those located in urban/interface areas such as Rock Creek.
There have been far too many ru-mours (many completely incorrect) and lack of current, relevant information available to the local people related to the Rock Creek fire. This has caused un-due stress and high anxiety levels among the local residents and those associated with them; a situation that is completely unnecessary.
In the U.S., the United States Forest Service has formal public information and fire liaison-officer positions filled by well-informed professionals who have extensive experience with fires and fire behaviour and who have good public re-lations skills.
These people are assigned to par-
ticular fires and their role is to keep all relevant parties, especially local people and, perhaps more importantly, the me-dia, well and properly informed of the relevant aspects of the fire.
It is very important to the local people to know where the fire is, what areas are most threatened, who has received what evacuation advice i.e. alert or evacuate and/or how they can help. Local people are often the best people to help out as many have excellent experience, the re-quired firefighting equipment and, most importantly, they have good knowledge of the local people and access routes, etc. They also are on site and can work with-out delay and in these situations time is certainly of the essence.
These knowledgeable locals must not be deterred, and turned away by RCMP, flag-people and others but must be in-cluded as valuable assets in structural defense, building of fireguards etc.
We therefore request that the MFLN-RO create such positions to better serve the people of B.C. Forecasts are for more frequent and larger fires so the need for
such positions will be even more nec-essary in the future. Building on and developing similar positions for B.C. would therefore be very appropriate and much appreciated.
It is extremely disconcerting when fire-related information is received from some ministry spokesperson(s) who is/are located in Castlegar or Victoria or some other location far-removed from the local area. They often have little to no knowledge of the area but are passing on what others have told them and, often by necessity, give generalized or somewhat misleading information. This not con-ducive to effective communications.
Similarly, when the media broadcast or print information received from some emotionally upset person who has good intentions, but only perceived knowl-edge of the situation and conveys this as factual when it is not, creates additional and undue stress among the local people and their friends and relatives. This can and should be corrected.
Fred Marshall,Greenwood
Editor, The Times:
The City of Greenwood, in a recent letter to residents, outlined its concerns regarding the sale of the city’s prized municipal water, which won a gold med-al in 2012 at the Berkeley Springs Inter-national Water Tasting Competition.
The letter stated, “The mayor and council would like everyone to know that it is not now, and it will not be our policy to be dragged into Internet battles and that we will continue to operate in an open, honest and transparent fash-ion. We would like to take this oppor-tunity to explain the system and, hope-fully, avoid future confusion.”
In response to recent, largely negative social media posts, the letter went on to describe the Internet, while certainly one of the “greatest inventions of all time” as having a darker side, which “can be used as a tool to put forward mistruths, it can use half quotes out of context, and it can contain outright distortions.”
Instead, the city will continue to use council meetings, minutes of those meetings and the posting of official noti-fications as its means of communication with residents. Council’s goal, as noted in the letter, is “openness, honesty and transparency.”
As for the issue of selling Green-wood’s water, council stated it “needs more research into the viability of a
long-term water deal and that any deal has to be fully and openly discussed with the main stakeholders-the citizens of Greenwood.”
Council also noted that the city was in the process of applying for a grant to upgrade its wastewater disposal system in order to bring the system up to cur-rent standards, and said it needed “to know the toll a large scale venture will put on the supply and on the current in-frastructure. We also need an accurate assessment of future requirements.”
With level 4 drought conditions in the region, the provincial government has warned that rivers and aquifer lev-els in the Kettle-Granby watershed will be impacted. “We must see what effect, if any, this has on our aquifer,” council said.
“We cannot let the temptation of in-stant gain overshadow the advantage of long term financial return. In the past our community has accrued a signifi-cant expense attempting to obtain a wa-ter deal. The city needs to be proactive and plan for the long-term viability of our water. Resources are not infinite.”
COMMON-LAW RELATIONSHIPS have become an increasingly popular choice for Canadians who want to share their lives together. In fact, according to Statistic Canada, the number of couples choosing to live common-law rose almost 14 per cent from 2006 to 2011 (close to three per cent more than the increase in married couples over the same time period).1
As more couples opt for common-law arrangements, there is a growing need to understand each partner’s rights as an important aspect of successful financial planning. Note that legislation related to family law differs from one province or territory to another; for example, in some provinces common-law spouses can share property rights and in others they cannot. It’s a good idea to seek legal advice regarding your rights if you and your spouse decide to live common-law.
Here are some measures that partners can take to help define their financial rights in a common-law relationship.
SIGN A COHABITATION AGREEMENT. A cohabitation agreement can be used to give common-law couples the same rights as married couples. It is a legal document that outlines details such as how your property right will be shared, how debt will be addressed, and whether or not assets will be equally divided. The benefit of a documented agreement is that it helps ensure you are both on the same page when it comes to your finances. It should be in writing and signed by both spouses.
CREATE A WILL. A will is another key component to your overall financial plan. A will is a written document that stipulates how you’d like
your assets distributed and can also deal with your debt when you pass away. It is important that your will and your cohabitation agreement do not conflict with one another to avoid potential litigation.
REVIEW BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS. When making a will or creating a cohabitation agreement, it’s also a good time to review any current beneficiary designations you have in place. Confirm that your beneficiary designations for life insurance policies, TFSAs, RRSPs, and other investments (where permitted) are consistent with legal obligations set out in the cohabitation agreement and your will.
GETTING STARTED. The process is complicated, but there are professionals that can help ensure you have a proper plan in place. A lawyer who specialized in family law can provide you with advice to ensure your rights are protected. At the same time, you may also wish to speak to an estate lawyer to help with your overall estate planning strategy. These professionals can work with your advisor to best address your particular situation.
Scouts step in to help fire victimsWestbridge-based KVR
Cycle Tours Company lost its headquarters to the Rock Creek fire on Aug. 13, but has found a degree of encouragement from an unexpected source.
Owners Paula Sheri-dan and Swade Finch were scheduled to entertain a group of Scouts from Al-berta this week, escorting them along the Kettle Val-ley Trail for a cycling expe-rience of a lifetime.
Upon hearing about Sheridan and Finch’s loss of 4.5 acres and their home in Westbridge, the Scouts de-cided to make the trip west anyway, but forego part of the cycling tour for an op-portunity to do their part in helping victims of the fire.
“They cleared our prop-erty of debris,” Sheridan said, “and we have put them in touch with Samar-itan’s Purse, whose contact
details were provided by the Red Cross when we registered at the evacua-tion centre in Midway after the fire. They are sacrific-ing another day of riding tomorrow to help however they can.”
S h e r i -dan said that besides the physical help
the scouts provided, they also gave she and Finch a much needed boost of spirit, which they hope will
help them establish a new start in Westbridge.
“We want to keep cyclists out there riding on our
beautiful KVR trail”, Sheri-dan said, “which hopefully will be open again next sea-son, if not before.”
A group of Boy Scouts from Alberta, scheduled to enjoy a cycling tour of the Kettle Valley Trail, in-stead put aside their bikes to help cleanup the burnt site of hosts KVR Cycle Tours.
Club a great successOur Build It! Sum-
mer Reading Club was a great success, with Kim Faminoff planning and run-ning a total of 14 pro-grams on Tuesdays for kids ages 6-8 and 9-12.
We had 21 children registered, plus several “drop-ins” over the sev-en weeks of the program.
The two groups each built a Lego structure, with each piece of Lego representing 15 minutes of read-ing—I think that the 9-12 age group ended up with the larger structure, but the younger kids weren’t far be-hind.
The last day was a fun one with lots of games and prizes, and medals (donated by the Royal Bank of Can-ada) were awarded to eight of the children who had completed their reading records (reading at least 15 minutes per day for seven weeks).
Summer Storytime for pre-schoolers was a big hit as well, with anywhere from three to seven chil-dren in attendance each week to hear stories, play games, do finger-plays and action rhymes, and make crafts. Storytime will resume in
October for children ages three to five years with parent or caregiver.
Be sure to come out to our Labour
Day Sidewalk Book Sale on Mon-day, Sept. 7. From 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. we’ll have tables packed with hard-cover and paperback books, fiction, non-fiction, and children’s selec-tions as well as videos, DVDs, and magazines.
We’ve had many donations over the summer, so there will be lots to choose from. In fact, we had one very large donation such that we ran out of room in our storage area and had to put a bookshelf outside the library for the summer months, and request that donations be dropped in the book drop after hours.
It will remain until the Labour Day sale. As usual, prices are by do-nation.
The 2015 quilt raffle will soon be over (Sept. 21 is the draw date) so there’s still time to purchase your tickets to win one of three beautiful prizes: a queen-sized quilt, a wall hanging, or a book bag and books. Good luck to all!
FireSmart provides expert advice
With recent catastrophic fire events comes the sober re-alization that most of us need to become more diligent about protecting our homes and properties from wildfires. The program known as FireSmart provides expert advice on how to make our houses and land secure in the event of fire by taking some fairly simple steps.
These steps are easily-exe-cuted and economical which anyone can take to create a FireSmart home, community or business site.
Having a mowed and wa-tered lawn surrounding your residence can be useful in help-ing stem the spread of a grass fire, as can minimizing the sup-ply of fuel for a wildfire by en-suring that the “priority zone” (within 10 metres) surround-ing your house is cleared of any shrubs, trees, deadfall or wood-piles.
Certainly, with water restric-tions now the norm in B.C.’s increasingly hot, dry summers, maintaining a nice green lawn is virtually impossible for many. However, those that can spare the water, including most rural property owners, are advised to dedicate some to their lawn, as it can prove the first barrier of resistance to a wild fire.
From 10 to 30 metres out from one’s home is the second priority zone. In this zone, it is necessary to reduce fuels by thinning and pruning so that combustion cannot be sup-ported.
If a homeowner insists on having a treed property, they should ensure that trees are thinned to a point where they are three to six metres apart at the crowns, and that all branch-
es are trimmed to a height of at least two metres. It is also rec-ommended that evergreen trees are either removed or their numbers minimized. Ever-greens such as pine and spruce are considerably more com-bustible than deciduous trees. Trees such as aspen, poplar and birch, in fact, all have very low flammability rates.
The third priority zone be-gins 30 metres from any struc-ture and extends to a distance of 100 metres and beyond. The recommendation for this zone is not to remove all combus-tible fuels from the forest, but to thin the area so that fires will be of low intensity and more easily extinguished. The thin-ning or reduction of shrubs and trees that make up the under story, combined with the reten-tion of fire resistant deciduous trees, can reduce the potential for a crowning fire. Once a fire reaches a forest’s canopy it be-comes virtually unstoppable.
The FireSmart program has its origins in Alberta, where, in 1993, an organization known as Partners in Protection (PIP) was awarded official status after it was incorporated in Alberta on February 8, 1993 under the Societies Act of the Province of Alberta. Partners in Protection was formed in Alberta in 1991 to address gen-eral issues concerning interface wildfires, which are those fires that threaten both wild lands and human development ar-eas. Since then PIP grown the FireSmart brand into FireSmart Canada, with the program be-ing supported by membership across the country.
In the South Okanagan/Boundary region, only the com-
munity of Anarchist Mountain is FireSmart certified, which, according local FireSmart Committee chairman Denis Thompson, cost the residents nothing but “the sweat off their backs” to make the community much more capable of surviv-ing a wildfire.
Local fire expert Darren Hutchinson, who took part in the Anarchist Mountain pro-gram initiation as a fire educa-tion advisor, said that most of the communities affected by the Rock Creek fire had shown in-terest in the FireSmart initiative prior to the blaze, but none had been able to organize enough residents to get the process on track. Consequently, no train-ing in fire safety and prevention was provided.
Hutchinson, owner of Bridesville-based Quintech Fire Services, which provides train-ing and consultation as well as firefighting, feels strongly that both communities and individ-uals can do a lot to protect their lives and properties during a wildfire and should be more proactive in doing so.
“This is the only natural di-saster whose outcome we can alter, through education, train-ing and a cooperative approach” said Hutchinson, “and it is irre-sponsible of government not to play a much larger role in help-ing implement FireSmart stan-dards throughout the province and facilitate a positive change.”
Hutchinson also voiced his concern that little appears to have changed since the cata-strophic fire season of 2003, which saw the destruction of hundreds of homes.
“Very, very sad,” Hutchinson lamented.
TOTA hosts trails workshopsAre you interested in the
regional rail trail network and creating an internationally ex-port-ready tourism product?
Workshops and an online survey will be offered for the Thompson Okanagan Regional Rail Trails Tourism Strategy.
Thompson Okanagan Tour-ism Association (TOTA) in as-sociation with Destination BC, Recreation Sites and Trails BC, Trails BC, Trans Canada Trail Society, B.C. Cycling Coalition and Cyclo Touring B.C. Pro-gram, is pleased to announce workshop dates for the Thomp-son Okanagan Regional Rail Trails Tourism Strategy.
This strategy, scheduled to
be complete by October 2015, will assist the regional rail trail network in creating an inter-nationally export-ready tour-ism product and will further advance the goals presented in the 10-year Regional Tourism Strategy Embracing Our Poten-tial (totabc.org/corporateSite/regional-strategy).
The centerpiece of this trails strategy will be the Kettle Valley / Columbia and Western Rail-way rail trails routes that form the basis of the Trans Cana-da Trail (TCT) through the Thompson Okanagan region.
This process is being led by TOTA with support Destina-tion British Columbia (DBC).
If you cannot attend a work-shop, consider completing the
online survey (surveymonkey.com/r/CHC9PVX).
Choose which location you can attend and RSVP by Friday, Aug 28 via email to [email protected]. Two workshops will be held in the Boundary:
Christina Lake: Tuesday, Sept. 1, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Christina Lake Wel-come Centre at Hwy 3, 1675 Kimura Road, Christina Lake.
Midway: Tuesday, Sept. 1, 3 -5 p.m. at the Community Hall at 692 Seventh Ave., Mid-way.
The project contact is Ellen Walker-Matthews, experiences development specialist, phone 250-860-5999 ext 215 or email [email protected].
The Horse Association of Central Kootenay hosted the Hot Au-gust Hooves Show Aug. 14 - 16 at the Trail Horseman’s Grounds.
It was a wonderful weekend of riding and fun, despite setbacks. Many competitors’ homes were under the threat of fire, which made for a stressful and emotional time.
The judge came from Riverside, Wash. and did a fantastic job. The weekend started Friday with dressage. Fifty-six tests were rid-den, both English and Western.
The associationa added something new to our program this year. TREC, which is a trail course with different kind of obstacles you would find if you were out in the mountains, was run and judged by Jocelyn Templeman, and was so much fun. Nineteen horses and riders went through the challenging course.
Saturday was English Day, and Sunday was Western Day, along with some halter and in hand classes. The weather was amazing, although very smoky on Saturday, and a tad hot Sunday.
Results for the weekend are as follows (Boundary riders in bold text):Overall Champion of the Weekend ̶ Merna Boltz riding Royal King ZantanonReserve Overall Champion of the Weekend ̶ Sam Levick riding Liden Bo PineIn Hand Champion – Pam Malekow with Illusionary KingInhand Reserve Champion – Kalpana Perry with Dongars DiamondHalter Champion – Merna Boltz with Royal King ZantanonHalter Reserve Champion – Wendy Price with Sir SynerziedEnglish Dressage Champion – Merna Boltz riding Royal King ZantanonEnglish Reserve Dressage Champion – Toni Wilhite riding LukeWestern Dressage Champion – Merna Boltz riding Royal King ZantanonWestern Reserve Dressage Champion – Tanya Ryan riding TwisterTREC Champion – Steven Pearson riding Nelson Ranch Surprise DocTREC Reserve Champion – Pam Malekow with Illusionary KingEnglish Senior Champion – Tanya Ryan riding TwisterEnglish Reserve Senior Champion – Wendy Price riding Sir SynerziedEnglish Junior Champion – Portia Dagg riding Sheeza Dun DreamerEnglish Child Champion – Taylor Robertson riding SunnyEnglish Reserve Child Champion – Jesse Selwood riding Comanche MaxEnglish Walk/Trot Champion – Sam Levick riding Liden Bo PineEnglish Reserve Walk/Trot Champion – Jacklie Smolinski riding Born a TitanWestern Senior – Champ ion - Merna Boltz riding Royal King ZantanonWestern Reserve Champion – Jackie Pollard riding Royal King FairytaleWestern Junior Champion – Portia Dagg riding Sheeza Dun DreamerWestern Child Champion – Jesse Selwood riding Comanche MaxWestern Reserve Champion – Montana Dagg riding KitaWestern Walk/Trot Champion – Sam Levick riding Liden Bo PineWestern Reserve Walk/Trot Champion – Tanya Ryan riding Eyes Full o’CharmChild Walk/Trot Champion – Gabby Elder riding MadisonChild Reserve Walk/Trot Champion – Lohan Buckland riding Fivestar Deival, and Paige Matejka riding SpookLead Line Champion – Jessa Buckland riding Freddy and Fivestar Feival
First Habitat mortgage paidIt is always a cause for a celebration
when homeowners pay off their mortgage. Linda and Andy McLeod, of Grand Forks, have become the first partner family of Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC (HFHSEBC) to pay off their mortgage.
The McLeods bought their Habitat for Humanity (HFH) home in 1999 and now 16 years later are mortgage free. At a ceremony held at their home on Aug. 1, the McLeods hosted current Habitat board members to celebrate this achievement.
Habitat’s mission is to build decent, affordable housing and promote home ownership for low income families that may not qualify for traditional mortgages. HFH is a leader in creating transformational change for families where the philosophy is: affordable housing should be a basic human right available to all.
The two largest barriers for most families to become homeowners are the ability to save for a down payment and having affordable monthly mortgage payments.
The down payment requirement is resolved by families contributing 500 “sweat equity” hours into the building of their home. Partner families purchase the home with a no interest mortgage where HFH caps the mortgage payments at 25 per cent of the family income.
Eleanor Martens, the chair for
HFHSEBC, “What makes our approach unique is that we remove the barriers to owning a home.”
At the ceremony at their home, Linda and Andy McLeod commented on the many people who had a hand in building their home. “We want to thank everyone who helped build our home
and make the dream of having a new home a reality.”
For more information on Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC, contact Bob Huff, executive director at: 250-442-2722 or by email at [email protected].
Miner slips from hoisting bucket and falls to his deathChronicles of Boundary Country from the pages ofThe Boundary Creek Times Volume VI, No. 16 – August 19, 1899
➤ A Big Smelter for Greenwood – “Mr. Paul Johnson is here. He is the smelting Messiah who is to deliver the people (of Bound-ary Creek) from any disappoint-ment because of the installation of the (Granby) smelter at Grand Forks. He is here representing the British Columbia Copper Company, of New York and has the intention to erect a smelter in our valley. Mr. Johnson is the heavy weight among the experts. He carries around some 300 odd pounds daily and still remains a genial, jovial gentleman. It is un-derstood that the most convenient and suitable site for the smelter to treat Motherlode ore is on Copper Creek (where it empties into Boundary Creek). The company took the precaution to se-cure a site here some time ago.”
➤ Death at the Motherlode – “For the first time the Motherlode mine was the scene of a fa-tal accident. Dominick Matello, a mucker, lost his life by falling to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of 215 feet. The signal for hoisting ore from the shaft is one bell, while for hoisting men is 3-1. Matello and two other muckers got on the bucket, each thinking the other had given the proper signal for hoisting men. The engineer re-
ceived only one ring – the signal for hoisting ore and the bucket came up at a much faster rate than is usual with men on. When it reached the top of the shaft, the men became excited. The bucket went higher as is necessary to allow dumping of ore. Matello and one companion jumped from the bucket but poor Matello slipped and fell in.”
➤ Why are we the Boundary District? – At a meeting of all Boards of Trade from the south-ern interior, a resolution passed as follows: “Whereas, the present Canadian and mining journals have frequent references to the marvelous richness of the min-eral resources of that part of Brit-ish Columbia popularly known as the Boundary Country: And, whereas, the general public out-side of the province have a vague or erroneous impression as to its
location, since it is not indicated upon the pro-vincial maps: Therefore, be it resolved that these associations urge upon the provincial govern-ment the desirability of designating the mineral region occupying the Kettle River Basin, as ‘The Boundary District’, and having this district de-fined and named on all maps of the province.”
➤ Grand Concert – An advertisement an-nounced a “Grand Concert at Barrett’s Hall to include a musical programme of solos and trios by young gentlemen of Greenwood who have not been heard here before; classical and charac-ter dancing; and a Photographic Model – posing having become the latest fad.”
The first busload of Kettle River Provincial Park evacuees prepares to re-turn to the site to reclaim belongings and vehicles. Most campers found their possessions intact, despite initial reports that the park had been completely razed.
A resident of Hulme Creek overlooks the damage below his property. Surprisingly, only one
property was destroyed in that area directly above Rock Creek.
The remains of the first house burnt when the fire erupted on Bishop’s Bend in Rock Creek. 29 more would follow.
