• Superintendent calls for a Boundary Committee and sets purpose

• Committee meets over several months to review data and make recommendation(s)

• Present preliminary report to the Governing Board

• Hold public meetings to receive feedback • Governing Board adopts school boundaries

Committee Process

• Meet four times from January – February

• Reviewed enrollment, demographic data as well as community maps for all schools

• Developed Guiding Principles for boundary setting

• Developed recommendations to address the attendance boundaries north of the 101 Freeway and specifically Elementary School #33

Committee Purpose

The purpose of the Boundary Committee is to review all K-12 school boundaries north of the 101 including a review of demographic projections and the effects of opening Elementary School #33.

Guiding Principles

• Consider keeping a neighborhood together

• Consider transportation/open enrollment variance issues and concerns

– Limit on resources; number of buses and drivers

– Distance from school

– Length of time a student is on a bus

• Safe routes to school – walking vs busing vs parent transportation

• Forward thinking to allow for future growth in an effort to minimize future changes for families

• Balance school enrollment

• Economically viable; fiscally responsible

• Consider feeder systems

• Consider open enrollment trends

Elementary Recommendation

Current: The boundary splits the Sky Crossing community along 32nd Street between Boulder Creek and Wildfire ES.

Recommendation: Create Elementary School #33 boundaries to run north of the 101 at Black Mountain Blvd to the northern boundary of the District. Western end of the school boundary runs south to encompass the Desert Peak community then runs along Pinnacle Peak until turning south to capture the Sky Crossing and Ridgeview communities.

Middle School Recommendation Current: Horseshoe boundary created for curricular reasons.

Recommendation: Eliminate the horseshoe creating a north/south boundary between Mountain Trail Middle Schools along Black Mountain Blvd.

• Would shift Pinnacle Peak & Grayhawk to feed into Explorer rather than Mountain Trail.

• Sky Crossing community currently split along 32nd Street between Mountain Trail & Explorer. Part of the community currently being open enrolled to Explorer. Recommendation keeps community together at Mountain Trail.

Pros

• Black Mountain Blvd is a natural divider

• Keeps communities together

• Minimizes transportation

Cons

• Some Sky Crossing buyers were told Explorer was the middle school

Middle School Enrollment (includes open enrollment)

High School Recommendations

Given current demographic projections, no

boundary adjustments were recommended

by the committee. Data indicates that no

further changes would be needed until

substantial growth warrants the construction

of a new high school.
