Gardening Corner: What to do in August (excepts from Floridagardner.com) August is one of Florida's hot- test months. I suggest you spend most your time inside in the air conditioning or sitting in the pool sipping iced-tea or maybe something a little stronger! If you do decide to venture outside there are some things that will need to be at- tended to in the garden. Pest control is one of the top priori- ties. Look out for and be ready to control ants looking to make their way into your dwelling, sod webworms, mole crickets and chinch bugs intent on gob- bling up your lawn, scale in- sects sucking the life blood out of your fruit trees and ornamen- tals, and aphids massing on the new growth of your citrus. This month, make sure you continue to fertilize since Flori- da's sandy soils do not hold nutrients well and your plants (especially palm trees) may begin to show signs of nutri- tional deficiencies. Heavy rains and consistent watering help to leach away the foods plants need to do their best. If you are anxious to plant a traditional vegetable, herb or annual gar- den this month (better to wait until September) these are your best bets: Vegetables : Beans, Broccoli, Carrots, Collards, Corn, Cow- peas, Cucumbers, Celery, Egg- plant, Leaf Lettuce, Mustard, Okra, Onions, Peppers, Pump- kin, Squash Tomatoes, Tur- nips, and Watermel- on.Herbs: Basil, Chives, Dill, Mint, Oregano, Sweet Marjo- ram.Flowers: Asters, Balsam, Begonias, Black-Eyed Susan Vine, Blue Daze, Cat's Whisk- ers, Coleus, Cosmos, Cocks- combs, Dianthus, Forget-Me- Nots, Gaillardia, Golden Globe Impatiens, Marigolds, Melapo- dium, Moon Vine, Pentas, Peri- winkles, Petunias, Phlox, Por- terweed, Portulaca, Purslane, Salvia, Scabiosa, Strawflowers, Sunflowers, Tithonias, Torenia, Verbenas and Zinni- as.Bulbs: African Iris, Agapan- thus, Amaryllis, Cannas, Cri- nums, Daylilies, Gladioli, Glori- osa Lilies, Society Garlic and Zephyranthes (Rain Lilies). Welcome to the Bottle Brush Breeze! I hope this issue finds you healthy and blessed.

These scorching summer months have put a pause on some events we are hoping to organize. We’re looking forward for it to cool off for another community yard sale and perhaps a BBQ. On the forefront is an upcoming date to paint the sign and another park clean up day that we could use volunteers for. I post events and activities on the “What’s Happening in Hickory Hill” Face-

book page and hope you will join to keep informed in between newsletters.

We have become a neighborhood far more united then past years and I am excited about the future of this HOA. Please send your ideas and/or concerns to my email below and I wish you a

great rest of you summer.

Sincerely,

Rose Smith, President

111 residents have contributed dues so far this year,(22%)

including 15 residents contributing $50 and some residents

paying 2 times in a year.

We created and distributed/mailed the Bottlebrush and a dues letter

and had cost associated with that during this period.

Over the next months, we'll have the usual lawn maintenance and FPL bills.

We currently have enough cash on hand to get us to the end of the year

barring too many additional expenses.

Robbery Prevention Tips (Source TPD Website)

Page 3 Volume 1, Issue 3

Do not allow strangers into your home, even if they are hurt or say they need help. Keep the door locked and call the police for them.

Do not advertise that you live alone.

Don't be afraid to call the police to investigate suspi-cious circumstances, unusual people or strange noises. It is better to be safe then sorry.

When you move into a new home, change the locks.

Keep your curtains or shades closed at night.

Don't leave notes on your door announcing when you will be home.

Keep outdoor lights on at night.

Never give information to an unknown caller. Report nuisance calls to the police and the telephone com-pany.

Keep your doors and windows locked. If it is warm and you leave your door open for circulation, keep the screen door locked.

If you arrive home and your door is open or things appear to be out of place - don't go in your home. Leave and call the police.

Write down license numbers of suspicious vehicles to give to the police, if necessary.

She was your favorite teacher…or the neighbor who always welcomed you in…your coach or Scout leader. Now she needs you to help her stay in her home by driving for Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels drivers deliver hot meals, a friendly greeting, and a safety check to homebound seniors over the noon hour Monday-Friday all year round. All you need is a vehicle, insurance, driver’s license and clean background check. Share a route with friends or co-workers. Distribution sites are located throughout Brevard County Call (321) 806-
