English Language (EFL) with GCSE Core ContentOn this programme students study English language alongside some core GCSE content. The course starts inSeptember and, for the first six weeks, all GEFL students follow the same syllabus before being divided intoability groups. Throughout the year, students may be moved from the lower to the higher level. This, of course, depends on the individual’s progress.

Students in the top group sit public examinations in IGCSE English as a Second Language and GCSE Mathsalongside a pre-A-level route in either Science or Business. The Science route covers core content in Biology,Chemistry and Physics. The Business route provides vital foundations in Economics, Business Studies, Geography and Physics.

This one-year course is ideal for those students aged 15-16 years who need to combine their language learning with an academic qualification. Progression from the top group can be to the 1 year GCSE Course(See page 4) or directly to A-level depending on age. This course starts in September.

From this example you will see the students’ weekly timetable also includes a Personal Tutor meeting, supervised Study Hall sessions, recreational activities, PSHEE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education)and an enrichment activity, meeting all National Curriculum requirements.

In all GCSE classes the average class size is ten students and this creates the ideal environment to provide the care and attentionthat is so essential during these crucial years of study. It also provides international students with an opportunity to become familiar with the British style of education and to acclimatise to anew lifestyle.

We ensure the students have a full and varied timetable that willallow them not only to achieve academically, but also to develop asindividuals.

Typically, native speakers of English take four subjects in thefirst year and, depending on ASresults, will continue with eitherthree or four of those subjectsinto their second year. In certain circumstances, students can alsochoose to add a different AS subject in year two. Students whoare not native speakers of Englishhave the opportunity to takeIELTS (International English Language Testing System) as oneof their subject choices. IELTSexams are arranged in November,March and May.

The 18-month course is aimed at international students who have completed High School intheir own countries in Decemberand do not want to wait until September to commence study atBosworth. This course is intensiveover the first two terms, January– June, and students must havethe appropriate language skills, aswell as the academic background,to cope with the pace of study. Please be aware that fewer subjects are available in Januaryand many students will studythree subjects at AS level and then add a fourth subject fromSeptember.

We only accept exceptional applicants onto the one-year intensive or the 18-month A-level programmes.

Those on the one-year intensiveA-level will have studied to A-level standard (or equivalent)previously and they will usuallyhave prior knowledge of theirsubjects. On the one-year coursestudents usually study three subjects to A2 and one subjectto AS. International studentsmust hold an IELTS 6.5 certificate, or equivalent.

Supporting Progression to UniversityEach student is supported in their university application process by their Personal Tutor and the Director ofUniversity Admissions. This preparation begins in earnest after AS examinations, during our unique “Mini-term”programme. We provide a full programme involving university visits, talks by visiting admission tutors and mockinterview practice together with individual support for students as they write their all-important ‘personalstatement’. Mini-term provides a structured post-examination wind-down with a combination of seriouspreparation for university applications alongside fun. Students generally work as a team on a business project,a charity activity and a sports event with a trip to a theme park for good measure.

Please look online at www.bosworthcollege.com for our most recent A-level results. Here you can also viewthe students’ degree choices and the universities to which they have progressed. Choosing the right universityrequires research and an understanding of the many choices available. With this in mind, we hold regular tutorled sessions to guide students through the UCAS process and advise them how to add value to their application.

Oxbridge, Medical and Highly Competitive Subjects PreparationEach year a number of students with exceptional academic ability will consider applying to the University ofOxford or Cambridge, or to study Medicine, Law or other highly competitive courses at undergraduate level. These institutions and degree courses are amongst the most competitive in the world and Bosworth runs atailored compulsory weekly preparation with guest lectures, visits from former students, guided debates andmock interviews that, alongside UCAS guidance, prepare students for the rigours of university selection.

Students face intense competition for these places. A-level success alone is not enough and we therefore offerstudents wider programmes and additional lessons to increase their chances of achieving their goal. This includes exposing them to interview techniques, current affairs and critical thinking.

www.bosworthcollege.com +44 (0) 1604 235090

From this timetable example you will see the student is studying four A-level subjects, but also included intheir weekly timetable is an enrichment activity, a Personal Tutor session and supervised Study Hall sessions. We ensure the students have a full and varied timetable that will allow them not only to achieve academically, but also to develop other interests. Second year A-level and University Foundation students have free time ontheir timetable allowing for independent study. However, these privileges may be withdrawn should studentsfall behind with their work.

Masem Abbas Irish GCSE & A-level student

“I think teaching atBosworth is different because it is more like tutorial style at university.Where due to the smallclasses it is more interactive, you’re actually learning, you are not just told to writestuff down.

This sets you up brilliantlyfor revision at the end of theyear and for exams. That’sall down to the teachers aswell, because they give personal attention, they areavailable outside of theclassroom which is reallyimportant, especially at A-level.”

University Foundation ProgrammesEngineering & Science or Business

• Entry requirements: Completed High School Diploma or Certificate

• Language requirements: IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent)• Age: Students must be 17 years of age at the start of the course• Start Date: September

The University Foundation Programme (UFP) is a one-year course designed specifically for international applicants and prepares students for the demands of undergraduate study. The UFP offers an alternative to A-levelstudy. However, students should be confident, when they apply, that they know which career route they wish tofollow at university. Bosworth has a strong Foundation Programme that is widely recognised by a number of leading UK universities. The course has a substantial academic content at a standard similar to A-level and students who embark on the course are required to sit a significant number of formal assessments, increasinglydemanding, during their Foundation Year. English Language tuition is provided alongside academic studies and students will be required, during their Foundation Year, to sit the IELTS examination. Very often, international students who have completed their Senior High School education are required to do a Foundation Year in orderto gain access to an undergraduate degree programme of their choice. The Bosworth College Foundation Programme is designed to develop students’ language skills and provide knowledge in specific academic subjectareas, in order to prepare them for undergraduate study. Therefore, it is an ideal course for students who areslightly older and prefer a one-year option rather than a two-year A-level course.

Course ContentThe programme provides between twenty five and twenty seven lessons per week of directed study, dependingon the level of IELTS provision required, as well as supervised study periods and optional enrichment classes. Students will study six modules in total, five of which are formally accredited on the Foundation Year graduationcertificate. Three of these modules are compulsory, the ‘core’ modules. In addition, three ‘elective’ modules arechosen, based on the students’ intended career route. The content and learning objectives of the ‘elective’ modules are based on A-level specification. In each ‘elective’ module, students are required to sit 4 formal assessments at strategic points during the academic year. In addition, the ‘core’ modules provide a fundamentalbackground to academic work at university level, ensuring that students are equipped with the necessary communication, numerical and analytical skills. We have the following programme routes available on the UFP.

*Portfolio Art may be offered for students interested in Graphic Design, Architecture or Fashion.**International Studies – this module studies World Development and includes Geography and Humanities based topics.

Alvaro Zubeldia De IturbideMexican University Foundation Programme student “I think what Bosworth givestheir students is not just academic preparation, it alsoprepares them to go out intothe world, live their life, takerisks, make mistakes andlearn from them. I believethis is how it should be.Socially I enjoy playingfootball twice a week andwhenever I can I go on theweekend trips. Two weeksago I went to Cambridge and last year I went to Oxford. Getting to see moreof the UK helps me to thinkabout university life andwhat will come next afterBosworth.”

How is the course assessed? All ‘elective’ modules are subject to four written examinations, andthese are taken at roughly equally spaced intervals during the course.Preparation for the IELTS examination is also a vital component of thecourse. Students embarking on the Bosworth College Foundation Programme are made aware that it is recommended that they shouldexit the Foundation Year with a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 pointsoverall, with at least 6 points in each of the key components of listening, reading, writing and speaking.

University ProgressionLeading pathways from our Foundation Programme Business route include:

Business Management, Economics, Accounting and Finance, Mathematics, Computer Science, Hospitality Management, Politics andInternational Relations.

Leading pathways from our Foundation Programme Science & Engineering route include:

Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology and Computing Science.

All students receive extensive counselling about which institution and course would be their best choice. We have progression agreements in place from several universities who officially recogniseour Foundation Programme, including the University of Manchester Business School, the University of Liverpool, Queen Mary University inLondon, Aston University and the University of York. In addition, in recent years, we have placed a number of our strongly performing UFPstudents (typically those who gain either the ‘Distinction’ award or the‘Merit’ award on our Foundation course) at some leading universitiesin the Russell Group, including the University of Manchester, the University of Bristol, the University of Sheffield, the University ofSouthampton, the University of Leeds, the University of York and Newcastle University.

Describe Bosworth in 3 words:Hard Work, International& Friendly

The BTEC Business Course offers an alternative to A-level study. It is a modular based course of one or two yearduration, depending on student requirements and is designed for students who may benefit from a more task-based, vocational approach to learning. The course relies on continuous assessment and, as such, is an attractive option for students who have found that they tend to under-perform in exam conditions. Internationalstudents will benefit from a programme of English Language tuition, which will supplement the BTEC programme.

The BTEC Qualification is widely recognised by industry and higher education as the signature vocational qualification on the National Qualifications Framework. The course provides progression to the workplace eitherdirectly or via study at a higher level. Over 100,000 BTEC students apply to UK universities every year and theirBTEC Nationals are accepted by over 150 UK universities and Higher Education Institutes for relevant degreeprogrammes either on their own or in combination with A-levels.

Course ContentThe programme provides a timetable of directed study, as well as supervised study periods and optional enrichment classes. Students will study a number of mandatory and optional units. The mandatory units cover essential business skills including areas such as principles of management, managing physical and human resources, marketing and international business. There are a wide range of optional units including law, accounting, international trade and market research. Students can often study BTEC Units and A-levels at the same time andthe units to be completed by each student will depend upon their own particular requirements in terms of accreditation required for university entrance.

The BTEC approach affords tutors the opportunity of setting group task-based projects where learners are encouraged to work collaboratively. This approach is replicated by undergraduate courses at universities and aBTEC qualification is, therefore, an ideal preparation for progression to study at degree level.

How is the course assessed?BTEC courses are currently assessed on a continuous assessment basis. The Course Tutor provides students witha number of assignments to complete on each unit, typically 3 or 4. These assignments allow students to displaytheir knowledge to a Pass, Merit or Distinction Level. These assignments are marked by the Course Tutor andmoderated/verified by an Internal Verifier at Bosworth. There is also provision for the Qualification provider toexternally verify the grading we have awarded our students.

University ProgressionLeading pathways from the BTEC Business Course include: Economics, Business Management, Marketing, Accounting and Finance, Law, International Business, Politics and Hotel Management/ Hospitality. All students receive extensive counselling about which institution and course would be their best choice.

BTEC Business Course• Entry requirements: School report and 3 GCSEs grade C or equivalent• Language requirements: IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent)• Age: 16• Start date: September

“The BTEC programme is a good alternative to A-level andis ideal for students who prefer to complete modular assignments. Each assignment will be graded and thismark will count towards their final points. At the end ofyear one a guaranteed number of UCAS points will havebeen accrued. It also means students can review theirprogress at each stage of the one or two year course; it is notreliant on an end of course exam. The programme can alsowork alongside A-level for any students who wish to combine the two.”

Stuart McPhail, BTEC Course Director

Bethany Alexander BritishGCSE & A-level student“The class sizes are reallysmall and that really worksfor me, you get a more personal relationship withthe teachers and it really helps you to grasp what youare doing in a lesson. Having a Personal Tutor definitely makes you feelmore comfortable withinBosworth, you can alwaysgo to them no matter what, even if you want to talkabout your weekend. However if you have problems, they will do theirhardest to solve them.”

English Language (EFL) with GCSE Core ContentOn this programme students study English language alongside some core GCSE content. The course starts in September and, for the first six weeks, all GEFL students follow the same syllabus before being divided into ability groups. Throughout the year, students may be moved from the lower to the higher level. This, of course, depends on the individual’s progress. For more details see page 6.

Academic Preparation ProgrammeThis course is designed for international students who are over sixteen years old. Itis for students whose level of English is not ready for them to progress immediatelyonto A-levels or the University Foundation Programme. This programme is designedto raise the students’ level of English to that needed for academic success.

This course has flexible start dates: usually, the beginning of September or Januaryterms. Students on the one-year option also have the opportunity to take a Cambridge PET and IELTS exam, and those who achieve a merit award are eligible toprogress to A-level or the University Foundation Programme.

The course consists of language improvement plus academic study, including GCSEMaths and Further Maths for the very able. Students opt to prepare for A-level in either Science or Business-related areas; studying Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Economics, Business Studies and Commerce, so as to learn key content in theseareas prior to progression to A-level.

High School ExperienceThis programme is designed for international students who wish to join Bosworthfor one or two terms rather than the whole year. Students will integrate into one ofour full-time programmes and the choice of programme will depend on age of the student, level of English and academic history.

Once we have the individual information about the student, we will make sure weplace them on a programme that is suitable to meet their objectives. Where studentsrequire significant English tuition, they will largely be in lessons with other international students but will mix with British students in the sports and enrichmentactivities.

Summer SchoolWe offer a General English programme in the summer - it is a six week course focused on English Language. It prepares students for continuing education in the UK or aims to help the student develop existing skills. The course combines classroom learning with educational trips and leisure activities. Plus students have the option for three afternoons a week to combine their English lessons with Art,Rock School, Football, Tennis or Film Making. The programme is run by a full-timeCourse Director and our permanent EFL staff.

Student SupportStudents starting in September and January begin with a comprehensive induction programme, which ensuresthey have a chance to familiarise themselves with their new surroundings, talk to staff and understand theirsubject choices and timetable. This provides a relaxing but fun start to their course. It is especially importantto us that boarding students aim to arrive for the induction period, so they have time to settle in.

At regular intervals throughout the year, students will sit tests in all their academic subjects. The results aresent to parents, along with comprehensive reports twice a year in December and April. This allows the CourseDirector to review each individual’s progress and ability, and keeps parents updated on their child’s progress.

We recognise that the culture and environment in which our students study is extremely important in helpingthem achieve their potential; this is true outside as well as inside the classroom. Each student is allocated aPersonal Tutor, who will be one of the senior teachers in the College. The Personal Tutor meets regularly withthe student and monitors their academic progress and guides each student through their university applications. They are also on hand to give support and advice about any non-academic issues which may arise. The Personal Tutor communicates regularly with parents and guardians. Furthermore, all senior staff in theCollege, including the Principal, Vice Principal, Director of Studies and Head of Boarding, provide an open doorpolicy, making themselves readily available to the student body.

In addition to tutorial support, our Student Liaison Officer provides a dedicated service for students, assistingwith banking arrangements, flights and general information, as well as offering invaluable emotional support.Occasionally, there may be an issue that a student prefers to discuss in complete confidentiality and this needis addressed by the School Counsellor. Finally, our School Nurse is available to attend to any students who are unwell, or who may need to discuss any health issues. All boarders are registered with a local NHS medicalcentre, which is close-by.

Dyslexia and Learning SupportWe have been providing specialist help to support students with dyslexia for over ten years. We have a well-qualified learning support teacher but, equally, teachers across the College understand the needs of students with a specific learning difference such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia or even ADD and ADHD. We can offer assessments and we provide those diagnosed with a specific learning difference weekly one-to-one lessons to help build strategies and to help organise their work. Fostering a sense of self-worthand building up confidence are vital ingredients of the support offered.

e College DayTo allow flexibility of subject choices the school day can start from 08.30 and run through to 17.55. However, core hours are 09.20 to 16.00 and students have to be in the College during these times. Throughout the daystudents are expected to remain in the College, and we monitor this through a regular registration system. When students do not have a lesson they are timetabled to be in one of our two supervised Study Halls. Herethey can prepare homework assignments or do follow up reading. Although our Study Halls offer wifi access, internet use is restricted so as to avoid social media distraction. In the long term, this is training students tomanage their workload and encourages them to plan and prepare their work, whether it is at GCSE or, eventually, degree level.

Extracurricular ActivitiesWe encourage our boarders to take part in the full range of activities on offer at evenings and weekends. Daystudents are made equally welcome. Our aim for them is to make new friends, learn new skills and have fun, whilst in a safe environment. We also provide students with the opportunity to gain more of an insight intoBritish towns and cities by arranging day visits.

Son OlszewskiPolishA-level student “As the year went on I realised I started calling theboarding house or now mysenior house ‘home’, so wewould go somewhere and Iwould say ‘I just want to gohome’ and then I realised Iwas talking about myboarding house. Home from HomeAt Bosworth College we offer both full and weekly boarding. All the supervised houses are modern instyle and are furnished to a high standard with a common room and a kitchen area as well as laundry facilities. The common room has some indoor recreational facilities including television, DVD player, computer, pool table and free wifi. Residential students from 14-18 years of age reside in our fully supervised boarding houses. Older students, with approval, may transfer to a college senior house. All accommodation is single sex with a choice of a single or twin shared rooms.

Meals are taken in our dining hall, where we provide a wide choice of meals, catering for all tastes and recognising any dietary needs. During the week, Monday-Friday, we also have a bistro style café where students can elect to have a lighter lunch or snack.

The restaurant and bistro are both located in Bosworth Hall, and at evenings and weekends this is thecentral hub for students to meet and relax with friends.

Boarding HousesThere are 6 supervised boarding houses where a house parent and daytime supervisors provide care andsupport. The buildings all have a secure coded entrance and are centrally heated, providing students with awarm and safe environment where they may relax, study and socialise with their housemates. We provide single or twin rooms, and each bedroom is separately locked.

The size of each house varies, accommodating from eighteen up to forty students. Allocation to a boarding house is based on gender and age. House parents, as well as offering welfare support, also ensurethat students adhere to the boarding rules, which are suitable for the appropriate age groups. Access tothe internet is curtailed at bedtime. House parents will offer younger students greater guidance with respect to laundry routines, hygiene, and homework sessions, all of which help to show students, awayfrom home for the first time, how to organise their daily lives. GCSE boarders also attend supervised prephomework sessions on weekdays to keep them organised with their studies.

Senior HousesStudents who have completed at least one term in Bosworth, are over eighteen years of age, have approval of the College and parental permission, may choose to transfer to one of our senior houses. An atmosphere of independence is fostered under the care and supervision of Bosworth. It is ideal preparation for eventual progression to student life at university. Mostly single bedrooms are available inthe senior houses, which are all close to the College and, although the students have the use of a smallkitchen, the College continues to provide three meals a day in its dining room. At weekends students maychoose to cook some meals for themselves, for example, a house breakfast or late lunch. Throughout theweek the student rooms are cleaned and serviced by our team of domestic staff, but students are expected to maintain respectable living standards. On-call supervisors will make random inspections, calling at weekends or in the evenings. Students have strict guidelines to follow and, should the responsibilities of unsupervised accommodation be abused, we will transfer students back to a supervisedhouse.

The location of all our houses is shown on the map overleaf.

Host FamiliesSome of our overseas students prefer to stay with a British family and Bosworth has a limited number of families who are pleased to offer a home to our students. This is not a typical homestay arrangementsince all meals are taken in the college dining halls and students are able to join in the full social life ofBosworth, before returning to their families to sleep. All the host families we use are within walking distance of the College.

College LifeBosworth Hall and three of our supervised boarding houses overlook a five-acre park called The Racecourse. It is ideal for outdoor sports with football being the most popular. In thesame vicinity we have use of a sportshall where, in the evenings and atweekends, students can participate in a number of indoor sports: badminton, basketball, volleyball, table-tennis and 5-a-side-football.

Each week we provide an enrichmentsession and students can elect to participate in a range of different activities. These vary each term but include activities such as: yoga, football, photography, art, cooking, knitting, Mandarin, bead craft, running, yoga, debating, guitar playing and chess.

Bosworth’s Student Council are heavilyinvolved in arranging the Winter andSummer Balls as well as organising annual fundraising events. Those thattake part in the Student Council have alot of fun. Other evening and weekendactivities are on offer for students tojoin in and these include rock school, pilates, self-defence classes as well as Saturday trips to areas of interest inthe UK e.g. Oxford and Cambridge.

We can arrange individual music lessons in College for a variety of different instruments from beginners to diploma level. Grade examinationscan be organised at the NorthamptonSchool of Music. Rock School studentsalso always perform at the Christmasand summer concerts, along with anyother talented students who wish totake part.

Every year new events and activitiesevolve; these are very often driven bythe interests of new students who areencouraged to stand for election to the Student Council. Our websiteprovides further details regarding student activities and events we holdor participate in.
