Deprivation
Overall, Redcar and Cleveland is ranked the 48th most deprived borough in England. There
has been little change since 2007 when the borough was ranked 46th.
Of the 92 Lower Super Output Areas in Redcar and Cleveland, 20 LSOAs are among the
most deprived in the country (i.e ranked in the top 10%). This accounts for 22% of our
LSOAs. Comparisons made with the last IMD in 2007 show that there is little change, ei-
ther in the number of LSOAs that are in the worst 10%, or the location of those LSOAs.
The IMD is a combination of the
different types of deprivation
(domains) experienced by individ-
uals living in an area, which can
be recognised together and meas-
ured separately. The IMD pre-
sents data at Lower Super Output
areas (LSOA), which are smaller
than Wards, but can be clustered
together to fit within Ward bounda-
ries. The LSOA with a rank of 1 is
the most deprived, and 32,482 the
least deprived on this measure.
The latest Indices of Depriva-
tion for 2010 suggests that
Redcar and Cleveland contin-
ues to experience relatively
high levels of deprivation
across the borough. This is
evidenced by the map above
where the red shades indi-
cate higher levels of depriva-
