Community celebrates renewalThe $11.4 million renewal of the Ashburton Pool and Recreation Centre is now complete. This major project has brought the facility up to modern standards and will serve the local community for generations to come.

The renewal has delivered the following improvements:

• an expansive 485 square-metre gym

• refurbished crèche

• new wet and dry change rooms

• new program rooms and consulting suites

• new front façade, entrance, reception and administration area

• landscaping around the outdoor pool, including shade umbrellas, bench seating and artificial turf.

In other recent work at the precinct, the pool hall ceiling was repaired and upgraded between July and September, and it looks fantastic.

The popular aqua play area was also recently upgraded. The colourful new area has a range of fun equipment that children have been enjoying since it reopened in September.

Message from the Mayor

Front cover (L to R): Svara and Madeline from Camberwell Primary School celebrate the magic of Christmas reading A Boroondara Christmas Story.

It is with great pleasure that I am writing this message as the 21st Mayor of Boroondara, and the first Bellevue Ward Councillor to hold the office. I am honoured to be able to serve such a wonderful City, and I would like to thank my fellow councillors for their confidence and trust in electing me as Mayor for the coming year.

This is a great opportunity to reflect on the year just been, our achievements and successes.

The $11.4 million Ashburton Pool and Recreation Centre Renewal Project was completed, creating a first-class facility for generations to come.

With more than a quarter of Boroondara’s population born overseas, it was wonderful to launch our Cultural Diversity Plan 2014-18 in March with a photographic

exhibition – Stories that Shape Us: People, Places and Possessions.

Council received a tremendous response to our discussion paper – Growing and Sharing Local Food in Boroondara which explores urban agriculture’s many potential benefits, such as social connection, health and wellbeing and environmental sustainability.

Actions now underway in response to community feedback to the paper include the development of an information resource for community groups that wish to progress proposals for new community gardens on Council land and the implementation of Stage 2 of the Winton Road Food Forest project.

Council announced a long-awaited community hub for Balwyn North in response to research and consultation with the community.

More than 400 residents participated in a Hub Fun Day in February to celebrate the occasion and meet representatives of the organisations that will deliver services and programs at the site.

Next year we expect to complete the $13.5 million upgrade to the Boroondara Sports Complex, and the new Hawthorn Arts Centre Civic Space will become a centre for different community-based outdoor activities and events.

I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year in the company of friends and family.

With best wishes,

Councillor Jim Parke Mayor of Boroondara

APARC remained open while the renewal was being completed, and the City of Boroondara would like to thank users for their patience throughout this period.

Your chance to WIN!With all the hype surrounding the festive season it’s important to remember that Christmas is a magical time for children.

As part of Council’s annual Christmas program we are sharing some of the magic by encouraging children to explore the larger-than-life interactive Christmas story book outside the Camberwell Library this December. In addition to the story book installation, a custom-created, beautifully illustrated book called, A Boroondara Christmas Story has been gifted to local primary schools and libraries. It’s a Christmas tale about two local children and their backyard adventures trying to catch a glimpse of Santa and his reindeers.

Visit any Boroondara Library to read A Boroondara Christmas Story or online at www.boroondaralife.com.au/events .

Not so merry for pets

Not all pets have a merry Christmas. As we head into the silly season and the hotter months, Council is urging residents to be mindful of their pets when planning festivities and trips away.

Storms, fireworks, extra noise and guests in the home, as well as soaring temperatures, can result in added anxiety for your pet, unexpected injuries and escapee pets from the home. Council notes an unfortunate rise in wandering and injured pets during this time and is therefore encouraging residents to take some basic steps to ensure their pet remains safe over the holidays.

Helpful tips:• Ensure pets are registered, micro

chipped and are wearing their registration tags.

• If you are planning a trip away you may consider organising a carer – someone to walk and feed your pet.

• Provide options for shade and plenty of water for those hotter days.

• Keep animals inside during storms or fireworks.

• Ensure that Christmas decorations are out of reach of your pets.

• Try to avoid the temptation to overfeed your pet with festive leftovers, particularly ‘human’ food.

• If you are buying a pet for Christmas, carefully consider the responsibilities and think about adopting an animal from a shelter.

Kriskindl FestivalThe annual Maling Road Kriskindl Festival brings together residents, traders, and community groups to celebrate the spirit of giving.

Now in its 29th year, the festival has become a community tradition and is patronised by generations of families. The event gives traders the opportunity to thank their loyal customers and for residents to actively take part in their community.

This event is presented by the Maling Road Business Association.

When: 5pm to 9pm, Friday 4 December, 2015

Where: Maling Road, Canterbury

Freshening up the Camberwell Fresh Food Market The final stages of the Camberwell Fresh Food Market upgrade are underway.

Further internal improvements, between October 2015 and June 2016, include new floor finishes, new bulkheads and signage, as well as the relocation of shops.

These works will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays and will not affect trading.

Kinder supportThe Preschool Field Officer Program is a Victorian Government funded program which provides support and advice to kindergarten staff and families to ensure inclusion and participation for all children, especially those with additional needs.

Preschool Field officers are experienced early childhood educators who are able to provide telephone support, share resources and visit the service to observe children in their kindergarten setting. They can advise on children’s development, school readiness and behaviour.

For more information about the program, or to speak to a Preschool Field Officer phone 9278 4642 or 9278 4370.

North Kew Kindergarten joins BKCESNorth Kew Kindergarten has become a participating member of the Boroondara Kindergarten Central Enrolment Scheme (BKCES).

From Monday 1 February, 2016, all applications for enrolment in the 2017 kindergarten year for the North Kew Kindergarten can be lodged directly with BKCES.

Application kits are located at all Maternal and Child Health centres, Council offices at Hawthorn and Camberwell, Council libraries, Council’s website and participating kindergartens.

Applications can be made online via www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/kindergartens .

Age-friendly CityThe City of Boroondara has been recognised by the World Health Organisation as an age-friendly city.

Council provides a range of programs and services in support of active aging that include home care, property maintenance, personal care and food services. Council’s social support programs give older people an opportunity to learn new skills and remain active in the community.

Boroondara residents have rated support services for older members of our community as one of Council’s most important service areas. The results from the recent Community Satisfaction Survey showed that residents rated the support services as ‘very good’.

Boroondara residents who use the programs and services provided by Council rated elderly support services with a score of 84 out of 100. This rating has improved over the past two years.

For more information about elderly support services, and to read the Community Satisfaction Survey report, visit www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/ .

WaspsThe European wasp (Vespula Germanica) is an introduced species which does not have any natural predators in Australia.

The lack of predators and favourable weather conditions allow the European wasp to flourish in numbers. They become particularly menacing during the summer and early autumn seasons.

The Public Health Unit at Council will investigate wasp nests located on public land and where appropriate, engage a licensed pest controller to destroy them. Nests located on private land are the responsibility of the property owner.

If you find a nest on your property it’s best to call in an expert licensed pest control company as European wasps will aggressively defend their nests.

European wasps live around humans because of the ample food and drink supply. If you are having a barbeque, make sure you keep food covered and clean up afterwards. Use a straw for cans of soft drink to prevent stings in the mouth and throat.

For further information, visit the Better Health Channel at www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au or to report a wasp nest on public land, please contact the Public Health Unit on 9278 4710.

Re-development of the Camberwell Community CentreCouncil is planning to redevelop the Camberwell Community Centre located at 33 Fairholm Grove, Camberwell, also known as ‘Leighton’.

The Centre has expanded its activities and has outgrown its premises. With the Council-owned building at 35 Fairholm Grove being vacant, there is now an opportunity to redevelop the Centre. Council plans to demolish both buildings and construct a purpose-built centre across 33-35 Fairholm Grove. The redeveloped Centre will also include a Maternal and Child Health Centre.

Concept plans are being drawn up following consultation with the Centre members, participants and hire groups and nearby residents. Construction is due to commence in July 2016 with the new facility expected to open its doors to the community in July 2017.

During the building phase, community groups and activities currently operating at Leighton will be relocated to a venue nearby.

Bringing the library to you!Have you heard about the Home Library Service? It aims to provide people who are housebound with the same level of service as people who attend the library.

If you, a friend or family member are having trouble physically visiting the library, or carrying books home, this service may be for you, providing a regular delivery of library materials. The selection of materials is based on your personal profile, developed in consultation with a qualified librarian and tailored to your tastes and requirements. Any resident of Boroondara who cannot physically visit the library will be eligible to join. Boroondara residents of supported accommodation, hostels and nursing homes in Boroondara, as well as people in their own homes, are eligible to join.
