Born in Tasmania to a German mother and a Romanian father, Anastasia Bickel graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Classical Voice (Advanced Performance) from the Queensland Conservatorium in 2015 and studied a Graduate Certificate of Music Studies (Opera) in 2016. In 2017, Anastasia looks forward to moving to Switzerland to commence a two-year position as mezzo-soprano/contralto young artist in the OperAvenir program at the Theater Basel. Anastasia has performed the alto solos in d’Astorga’s Stabat Mater and Bach’s BWV 4 and 182 with the Queensland Bach Society (2017), Jenkins’ Stabat Mater with Musica Antiqua Collegii (2016), Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle with the Noosa Chorale (2016), Vivaldi's Gloria with Canticum at the Brisbane Baroque Festival (2016), Bach's Matthäus-Passion for the Newcastle University Choir (2016), Handel’s Messiah (2015) and Haydn's Theresienmesse (2016) for the Queensland Bach Society, and Duruflé's Requiem for the Cantate Singers (2015). Operatic performances include Florence Pike in Britten’s Albert Herring for the Queensland Conservatorium/ Brisbane Festival (2016) (directed by Bruce Beresford and conducted by Nicholas Cleobury), Third Nymph/ Philadel’s Spirit in Purcell's King Arthur at the Brisbane Baroque Festival (2016), Third Boy in Mozart’s Magic Flute at the Queensland Conservatorium (2016), Hansel in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel at the Queensland Conservatorium (2015) (directed by Michael Gow and conducted by Johannes Fritzsch), and the Sorceress in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Mornington Peninsula Summer Music Festival Academy (2014) and for the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic (2014). At the Lisa Gasteen National Opera School, she performed scenes from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin as Olga and Wagner's Götterdämmerung as Flosshilde (2014) and Verdi’s Falstaff as Mistress Quickly (2016). Anastasia has recently been awarded Third Prize in the National Liederfest (2017), Wagner Society in Queensland’s Encouragement Award (2016) for the Conservatorium singer with the “best potential for a career in Wagner and Strauss” and the Doreen Ord & Lyceum Club Prize (2016) for the “best meritorious postgraduate singer at the Conservatorium.” Other awards include: the MTO Encouragement Grant (Second Prize) at the finals of the MTO German-Australian Opera Grant (2016), the Judges’ Encouragement Award (Third Prize) at the finals of the Dame Joan Sutherland Award (2016), the Radzyminski Family Prize at the semis of the IFAC Australian Singing Competition (2013 and 2016), the Alton Budd Memorial Prize (First Prize) in Murwillumbah (2016), the prestigious Joyce Campbell Lloyd Scholarship for Overseas Study at the Queensland Conservatorium (2015), and the inaugural AOAC Judith Ward Lieder Scholarship at the semis of the Australian Singing Competition (2015). In 2014, she was a finalist in the National Liederfest and winner of the prize for Best German Diction. In 2016, Anastasia was a semi-finalist and reserve finalist for the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship, a semi-finalist in the IFAC Australian Singing Competition for the third time, a finalist in the Dame Joan Sutherland Award in Noosa and a finalist in the MTO German- Australian Opera Grant.
