I hope that you have all had a very enjoyable, relaxing and tummy-expanding Christmas; may the first wish for the New Year be that the waistline goes down as easy as it went up (fat chance, but you never know). I didn’t get to watch much TV over Christmas, but did get to see the Driving Legends programmes on Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart: (On I-Player if you missed them – well worth it). They were both absolutely fascinating, for many different reasons. The two presenters (actor Sir Patrick Stewart for Moss and chef James Martin for Stewart) both admitted the drivers had been their boyhood heroes, and as you watched the programmes both Moss and Stewart really did come across as strong, dynamic individuals, who you could trust and believe in. Can you imagine any of the current breed of F1 superstars being regarded as boyhood heroes? Are people still going to be in awe of Michael Schumacher or Lewis Hamilton 20 years in the future? Maybe they achieved heroic status because they survived in what was then a genuinely dangerous sport. The historic footage was great to watch, but even in the 70s the level of spectator and driver safety were terrifying by their absence; a situation that Stewart did much to rectify, to his eternal credit, even though I can remember that he was hated for it in some corners. One of the nicest points that came across was that they were both still car enthusiasts, keen to drive cars and talk about their exploits. Petrolheads both; just like us. So, fellow motorsport lovers, what have we got to look forward to for 2013? The Alan Healy Memorial Stages at Cadwell will run on 7th April, with work starting on that very soon. We’ve got Championship status this year, so let’s work hard to make this year’s even better! Then it’s the Classic on May 12, and no doubt lots of other rallying and marshalling action as well. So plenty to look forward to; (it might even stop raining). Let’s all have a great 2013 enjoying our sport, and we can all perhaps be heroes by doing what we do to the best of our abilities.

I write this on the last day of December and also of 2012, so that must mean that I’m in time to wish everyone a very Happy New Year for 2013. I hope that you have all had a very enjoyable, relaxing and tummy-expanding Christmas; may the first wish for the New Year be that the waistline goes down as easy as it went up (fat chance, but you never know). Roger Albert Clark Rally trivia 1 The rally brings around £1,500,000 into the local economy. Technical / Regulation changes Noise control in Rallies One of the amended regulations in the 2013 MSA Yearbook is (R)4.1.3, which now reads: “All measurements refer to the 0.5m test (J.5.16). Wherever practical the 2.0m test should be used.” To clarify, the specific limits in rallying are as follows: CATEGORY Engine speed 0.5m test 2.0m test Road Rallying 2/3 maximum engine speed 98 dB(A) 86 dB(A) Special Stage Rallying 4,500rpm 100 dB(A) 88 dB(A)

ROPS door bars Regulation (K)1.2.2 includes the wording: “Any modification to a homologated safety cage is prohibited.” Most homologated ROPS already incorporate door bars but some of the older ones do not. The word ‘modification’ is a defined term as follows: “Any change in the design, material, shape, dimensions and/or surface finish of a component, except for basic manufacturing processes, normal wear and published service or repair procedures.” Welding door bars into a homologated ROPS is therefore considered a modification but door bars can be removable so they can be bolted in. Also on the subject of ROPS door bars, the illustration of crossed door bars in drawing (K)12(h) shows a simple cross with one single piece and two shorter pieces, as per the pictured example (left). Regulation (K)1.3.5 requires at least one of the members to be a single piece, therefore permitting designs such as the one pictured (right).

Towing eyes Towing eyes continue to be a subject of much debate in a number of circles. The specific requirements are set out in the appropriate regulations; for circuit racing (Q)19.1.3 applies, in summary requiring substantial loops of 60mm internal diameter attached to the main chassis structure, front and rear. In stage rallying (R)48.1.13 applies, in summary requiring towing eyes of adequate strength and size fitted front and rear. Note that the typical “screw-in” tow eyes supplied with many production cars do not comply, as they fail on the minimum internal diameter. A 2-inch wide webbing strap is satisfactory, and some proprietary parts use such a material. If the towing eye is home-made then piercing the webbing and using a bolt with large washers is not acceptable; a small 2mm nick in the edge of a webbing strap dramatically reduces its strength, as does piercing a hole through it. There have also been issues with this style of towing eye dragging on the ground and abrading – which again reduces the strength. Wire cable is also acceptable if it is of the appropriate size. Remember that the towing eye must be coloured in a if it is of the appropriate size. Remember that the towing eye must be coloured in a contrasting colour; webbing is often yellow or red. Roger Albert Clark Rally trivia 2 The results service does not attend the event. The organisers joke that it is run from a bedroom

MSA Chief Executive The present chief executive, Colin Hilton, retires at Easter 2013, and the MSA are seeking a replacement. The new post holder will need the following - The successful candidate must demonstrate expert stakeholder management and relationship building skills; negotiating, facilitating and influencing with a calm and patient persona; and also display the self-motivation, determination and creative vision to develop all branches of the sport, business and organisation. The preferred candidate will be a strong leader and communicator with board level experience within a multi-stakeholder environment, have a thorough understanding of the service nature of such an organisation, and a keen interest in motor sport. Roger Albert Clark Rally trivia 5 Congratulations to local crew Nigel Barber/ Stuart Popplewell finished 2nd O/A on the open event in their Astra NGK Spark Plugs continues BRC Challenge support in 2013 Apart from adding the classic Scottish Rally, the regulations remain practically unchanged, a minor tweak to the technical regulations making it easier to enter. Points and a half on the final round should keep the interest right to the end of the season. The entry fees provide some of the best value per stage mile rallying in the UK. Reconnaissance is allowed on asphalt events. There is no control tyre, just restricted maximum numbers to keep costs down. Cars limited to two wheel drive, with control fuel to limit cost and improve safety. See website for further details - www.autosportinternational.com Ford leaves the World Rally Championship. Involvement in rallying began in the 1930’s when a Ford won the legendary Monte Carlo Rally. Zephyrs followed in the 50’s, to be replaced by the Cortina MKI, which the versatile Jim Clark drove on the 1966 RAC Rally. The MKII Cortina followed on, but it was with the MKI Escort that Ford entered into the newly formed championship in 1973 and now, nearly 50 years later, they are bowing out as a manufacturer in the sport. From a workshop on an old airfield at Boreham to the modern Dovenby Hall facility in Cumbria run by M-Sport, several generations of rally cars have been prepared for use by some of the world’s top drivers. Amongst these the MKII Escort must surely be one of the most recognised rally cars in the world, and the sound of one at full chat echoing through the forest still makes hairs on the back of the neck stand out on hardened rally fans. Other models include the ill fated RS1700T, soon consigned to the scrap heap when Audi brought out the all conquering Quattro and the glorious, but short lived RS200, which became obsolete when group B cars were banned. In all this time they have only had 2 championship drivers in their cars, Björn Waldegård (1979) and Ari Vatanen (1981,) 3 manufacturer titles and 82 event wins; the most successful car being the Focus WRC, which took 44 of those. M-sport will continue to receive engineering support from Ford in 2013 to run the Fiesta RS WRC Roger Albert Clark Rally trivia 6 Colin Heppenstall and his wife Nicola re-mortgaged their house to keep the event afloat after the first rally in 2004. Their faith has been rewarded by the best entry so far this year. Stage Rally Championship 2012

EVENT REPORTS Harold Palin Memorial Rally, Manby 5th October – Mel Hudson/Roy Bell 13th O/A 3rd in class. Phil Rowland/Phil Woodcock 26th O/A 7th in class. Mel Hudson/Roy Bell Mixed feelings from Mel and myself, as we have been competing at this venue since the 1980’s and this event was possibly for the last time. Mel broke his wrist in Col Pogson’s MKI Escort when the main runways were being dug out, we both competed on an event in the same class, but in different cars, for the first time and enjoyed the rallies that ran the parts round the fields. The organisers ran some loose for the first stage in an effort to put a bit of variety into the event, but rain earlier in the week had made parts so slippy and unpredictable; they cancelled this for the rest of the event. Phil/Phil had some bad luck, taking a maximum, but set some good times after that. Without that penalty they would have been really close to us. The rest of the event went well, and we finished another with the smokey engine still puffing away.

Tunnocks Mull Rally. 11th – 13th October – John Cope/Rob Fagg 3rd O/A 2nd in class. This year was a rally of mixed fortune…………. The run up to the Tunnocks Mull rally 2012 had been fairly good to us, a win on the Isle of Man in February, a 5th overall on West Cork and a 2nd on the Enville stages at Anglesey stood us in good stead, however a front outer CV failure on the Pokerstars rally back on the Isle of Man in July created a little concern. It was decided to replace the front drive shafts completely before Mull, along with a gearbox check and other routine maintenance. A good recce the week before saw me and Rob Fagg chilled and ready to go and have another crack at getting the elusive win on Mull. With no problems through noise and scrutineering on Friday morning it left us kicking our heels for 8 hours.

Page 9: Border Lines - Winter 2012

Friday night start was wet and horrible for the large crowd that gathered for the ceremonial start and autograph signing (it was like a WRC round!) in Tobermory. Intermediates were the tyres of choice. All was going well halfway through the first test over the Mishnish Lochs stage when on an approach to a hairpin left, the car understeered and I had to apply the handbrake, the car snapped sideways and left us pointing to the inside of the bend; setting off again I knew immediately that there was something wrong. We had dropped a chunk of time but still managed 7th quickest. I later found out at service what I had feared, another outer CV failure on the same side. In between, before we got to service was another stage, a whopping 14 mile test over the ‘Hill road and loch Tuath’ which we managed, but only 29th fastest, dropping us down the leader board to 17th overall. At service the guys set to work and replaced the complete shaft with plenty of time to spare. Stages 3 to 7 went well, no problems and setting good times to move us back up to 8th overall. The 8th test of the night was Griburn Rocks where we experienced another drive shaft problem, this time it was both rear shafts. The bolts had come loose and one had dropped off 2/3rds the way through the stage, however surprisingly we didn’t drop that much time and still held our 8th overall. The emergency service after stage 8 was frantic, bodies everywhere crawling over the car establishing just exactly what was wrong and then, fixing it in double quick time. The guys did a sterling job to get it done but it left us with a 12 mile road section to do in just 12 minutes, a feat which we nearly achieved, dropping just 1 of our 5 minutes lateness. The last stage of the night was a 22 miler, the Calgary bay/Glen Aros stage, thankfully all went well and we finished the night in 8th Overall. With Friday night being so fraught, we were hoping for a good clean run for the rest of the rally. Saturday was also wet so we stuck on the same 4 tyres that had done Friday night. A good run on the daylight stages saw us move up from 8th to 4th, including a fastest stage time on SS10. By Saturday night the rain had stopped but the roads were damp, so the big decision was going to be tyre choice. I opted for slicks, feeling brave! however on the drive down to Salen I was very much undecided, it was very slippy under the trees yet you could see a very distinct dry line appearing. By the time we got to the start it was drizzling, albeit very fine and I lost my bottle, so a quick change back to inters by the chase crew settled my mind. This proved to be the right decision, as it was very slippy. On stage 16, the penultimate one, Tony Bardy put his Nissan Sunny GTiR off the road and promoted us to 3rd overall, which we held onto the finish with Calum/Iain Duffy taking the win from a flying John MacCrone/Stuart Louden in his fiesta R2. A brilliant result considering our problems on Friday night. Thanks must go to all the team for another valiant effort – Dean of Geoprep, Andy, Richy, Ben, Tony/Rhys and Rob for sitting in with me. Another year goes by and the Holy grail remains just that. One year, maybe!

Lynn Charity Stages, Sculthorpe. 21st October - Mel Hudson/Roy Bell 13th O/A 3rd in class, Phil Rowland/Phil Woodcock 16th O/A 4th in class, Paul Moran/Barry Sawyer 21st O/A 6th in class, John Savage/Paul Rhodes 23rd O/A 3rd in class. Mel Hudson/Roy Bell Although a bit of a trek to Norfolk, and requires an overnight stay, well worth the trip, and reckon this was the best multi-use rally competed on in 2012. The airfield runways are mixed in with narrow and twisty parts so there is something for everybody, and with seven to nine and a half mile stages, plenty of time to get the best out of the cars. Overnight rain made the first 2 stages very slippery, and wets were chosen. Good time on first one, the only surprise being the last chicane, which was considerably tighter than all the others and had caught some previous cars out. SS2 felt quicker, but was actually slower. Going to swap front to rear until some shiny parts found on rears. Mmmmmmm maybe steel isn’t as grippy as rubber on tarmac, hence the slower time. New slick rears with extra cuts put on just in time, and off for the two last stages to run anticlockwise. After dinner seemed to get into the groove better, and more consistent with five 15th & one 16th quickest times, which was complete surprise, as at the end of the penultimate stage there was a very noisy engine bottom end rattle. Needed to keep 3rd in class for Mel to get 3rd overall in the ANEMMC championship, so short shifted on SS10 everywhere, but was 40 seconds down on previous time, and thought it was all over. Hadn’t realised the rain, which had started again, slowed others as much as it did, so when looked at results, had held 3rd in class by one second. Job done!

As you can see the BMW boys enjoyed the slippery conditions

Roger Albert Clark Rally, Loads of Forests + Croft. 22 – 24 Nov - Roy Bell, 1st O/A [Back to the finish, 1st class event. What a dream, it was around 1:00 in the morning and I was wandering round this building eating curry and looking at one of the biggest gathering of MKI & MKII Escorts I had ever seen, along with Porsches, Saabs, and other makes. Periods of quiet were interrupted by a hammer thumping body work, mechanics moving around, spanners being dropped on the floor, and in the distance the flash of an arc welder………. Hang on this wasn’t a dream, but the end of day one of this rally, and I was at the Pickering Showground with Roy Brader, one of the Club Stewards, who I was assisting on the event, Why so late, well a 45 minute stoppage meant that the ‘Night Rally’ which was tagged onto the main event was delayed, and had to stop at the finish in a car park in Dalby Forest, to resolve any problems which meant missed the chip shop in Thornton-le-Dale which stays open very late for the rally. So the food was very welcome, supplied by a lady and her daughter who I was surprised to see there, as they had started around midday, and still had to pack up and get home. One of the little things thought about in the organisation of this complex event. Up again at 6:30 for the second day, which meant a drive through Duncombe Park checking radio locations, and general layout of the stage, before going to Croft to check same, and wait the finishers of another of the events. Well there was only one, surely they were not going to protest themselves [Did manage to set fastest times on all stages though!] On to Carlisle for the overnight halt, checking that was set up OK, but as no events finishing, early night. The Event Secretary, Shaun Brader, however had to wait for the all competitors, last one due in at 21:00. The last day was eventually [NOTE: When somebody says ‘It’s all right I know where we are going’, never assume they do. At least on the detour via the B725/B722 found a fantastic stage should there ever be closed road rallying in this country] spent at service in Hawick, where cars from three separate rallies were coming and going.

Page 12: Border Lines - Winter 2012

The Clubmans Rally and Return Challenge events tied into the main event offered these crews 87 stage miles in one day. Each event cost £400 to enter, but if doing both it was £600, another nice touch from the organisers. Back to Carlisle to set up the finish venue, a non-steward task, but a valuable one. For the previous 8 years Margaret Heppenstall had done this with her husband Brian [Clerk of the Course’s mother & father] but sadly Brain passed away earlier in the year, and you could see it was a very poignant time for her, A stickler for detail stuff was moved around numerous times till all correct, and the awards were set out with opera gloved hands in precise rows. A crash on the last stage delayed the awards presentation, so a late finish, and not back home till 12:30, but well worth it for the experience, and it was a great chance to see the opposite side of a rally, and appreciate just how much work goes into this event. The organisers do everything they can to keep crews going, not often you see the course closer with a tow rope out of the back of his truck, but if you’ve paid just under £2000.00 entry fee you want value for money. From the steward’s view there were few problems, but bear in mind that if there are protests they can be resolving them a long time after most of the competitors have left, and on the 2010 rally, they had very little sleep keeping the event running in the snow.
