Addressing the Challenges of the Opioid Epidemic in Minority Health and Health

Disparities Research in the U.S. (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) APRIL 10, 2018

National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities is interested in several

research priorities that could have significant

impact on understanding and

addressing the opioid crisis in health

disparities populations.

Education: Studies on the role of incorporating opioid prevention strategies as part of the health education curriculum and enforcing continuing education on opiates prescribing clinicians.Community Level Interventions •Assessing the link between economic, physical and psychological problems and the opioid crisis (“crisis of despair”).

•Assess the role of economic upheaval/deprivation, impact of youth migration from rural areas, unemployment, and inequality in the era of opioid crisis.

Implications of Obstetric Violence

• Less likely seek skilled health care (Browser and Hill 2010)

• PTSD/Postpartum Depression (Ayers 2017)

• Maternal/infant bonding (Kinsey et al. 2014)

SURVEY:

- Surveyed a total of 2,279 individuals (90% PhD and 10% Master’s students).

- Respondents were from 26 countries and 234 institutions.

FINDINGS:

- Graduate students are more than 6X as likely to experience depression and

anxiety as compared to the general population.

- Strong, supportive and positive mentoring relationships between graduate

students and their PI/advisors correlate significantly with less anxiety and

depression

CONCLUSION “With mental illness a growing concern within graduate education,

data from a new survey should prompt both academia and policy makers to consider

intervention strategies”

Weekly Lab Meetings!

Two substances derived from plants may have the potential to treat depression:

Dihydrocaffeic acid (DHCA) and malvidin-3′-O-glucoside (Mal-gluc) produced from

bioactive dietary polyphenol preparation (BDPP) composed of Concord grape juice, grape seed

extract, and trans-resveratrol = promoted resilience against stress in mice, each in a different

way.
