So what is “Project Bootleg”?Auteur theory has been the subject of stimulated debate since 1954, when French lmmaker Francois Truaut advocated that an author's creative voice is distinct enough to shine through studio interference and the collective process. 50 years later, Truaut's words adopt an entirely new context as today's digital revolution liberates lmmakers from the antiquated studio system. Project Bootleg is about showcasing high quality, arresting lms that rival the best of Hollywood storytelling at a fraction of the cost and none of the hyperbole.

A few years ago, my no-budget debut feature lm, Icarus Broken, handcrafted and sweated over for too long, broke onto the international scene and was released in the USA and Canada.

I was elated. But at the same time, more than a little battle-bruised by the ever-tough journey from concept to distribution - and I kept thinking, I’m not the rst person to do this, so why is the route to success such a well kept secret? I knew there had to be another way - an alternative for talented lmmakers beyond pressing palms at the same old suit and boots lm festivals, where acceptance counts more on your ‘name’ than the quality of your movie.

During the whole process, I realized that making a low-budget lm was only half the battle - getting it seen and surviving the business, that’s the tough part. I also recognized that most lmmakers had little awareness of what happened when their lm landed, and that in many ways, the indie world can be just as predictable as Hollywood 1.0. So I decided a dierent approach was needed and I created Project Bootleg - an indie lm company with a vision to redraft the rulebook.

The Bootleg Film Festival sprang to life in September 2008, situated in the basement art gallery of a little coee shop in Glasgow. With audience members sitting on the oor of a makeshift screening space alongside new and established lmmakers, the three-day event was a great success, typied by the quality of the lms including the Greta Gerwig (Arthur, Greenberg) vehicle, Yeast.

After the festival, I stuck to my intentions and introduced select lms and lmmakers to some of the producers and sales agents I had gotten to know on both sides of the Atlantic. By holding the door for a lot of the lms the Bootleg audience had dug, we were now able to assist in establishing new connections and tangible working relationships for many.

In February 2010, Bootleg Film Festival returned, this time to Swansea, South Wales, as part of an idea I hadto make a big noise in a new city every year. Again, the festival took a unique space and turned it into an art-house cinema, discovering even more new talent and welcoming back some previous lmmakers (aka Bootleg All-Stars) to the proceedings. Once more, I had the joy of introducing some of the lmmakers to solid connections I had fought hard to make, leading to more working relationships being formed.

In February 2011, Bootleg hit London for our biggest showing yet. With more lms than ever submitted, the Exhibit Cinema in South London served as the ideal space for the lmmakers and the audiences to share experiences, learn just what it takes to get a lm to market and most importantly, to inspire each other to keep ghting the good ght. Again, fostering new and established relationships, we’ve passed many of the lms on for additional public screenings in partnership with One Way Theatre and their outdoor cinema facilities.

I’m really excited for Bootleg in 2012, as Toronto marks the rst time the festival will be happening overseas - something I couldn’t have dreamed of back in that little basement in Glasgow. It also represents the beginning of the next stage for all involved with Project Bootleg, and as the festival approaches, there will be several exciting announcements made as we continue to re-dene the independent lm approach.

When I started out, I had a saying; ‘I can and I will.’ Eventually, after a lot of hustle and hard work, I added ‘I did.’ Bootleg Film Festival exists to promote, assist and celebrate all those that believe they can, and they will.
