Principal’s Report
Absences
The Department of Education is requiring schools
to contact families on the same day an absence is
recorded to ask for explanations around absences.
This will not apply to absences where families
have notified us beforehand but will only apply to
‘unexplained’ absences. SMS messages are sent
home every day, through Xuno, to alert families to
absences. Responses to these messages can be
made through Xuno, by ringing the school or
sending along a note when the child returns.
How was your Day?
Last week, I asked families to consider different
questions to ask about school days. The blurb
mentioned is attached in this week’s newsletter.
Student Attitude Survey
Today, all Year 4 - 12 students completed their
Attitude to School surveys for the Department.
The results of this survey will be given to us late in
Term 3.
Thanks
Next week Carol White returns from sick leave.
We would like to thank Fiona Hall for taking over
Carol’s class and working with the Year 2/3
students for the last four weeks. We also look
forward to seeing Carol back, fit and healthy.
Illness
As we move into flu season, I would like to remind all families of the necessity of keeping ill
children at home, particularly if vomiting has occurred. The best way of keeping our community

VISION STATEMENT
Our vision is to empower our students and staff to work together to become active
and valued community members. We provide a safe and supportive learning
environment, which fosters independent, resilient lifelong learners.
BDS Motto: ‘Achieving Excellence Together’
BDS Beliefs and Values: Pursuing Excellence in all Areas
We ask that students are not on the school grounds before 8.40am each day as supervision is not provided
before this time.
healthy is to avoid the spread of germs – wash hands vigorously, rest if ill, stay away from school
for 48 hours if vomiting occurs and keep up the fluids.
Xuno
Remember to keep looking at Xuno for feedback on tasks and assessments completed. Progress
reports are also available from many teachers, especially in the F-6 area. Remember also that
summary reports only will be sent home at the end of this semester, for all students.

Heywire
The annual Heywire cycle begins with a storytelling competition - open to people aged
16 - 22, living in regional or rural Australia. Heywire encourages young people to tell
stories about their life outside the major cities in text, photo, video or audio format.
Over the past 17 years, more than 9,000 young Australians have taken part.
Entries close 17th September
See Mrs Gould for more information.
Peer Support Week 4
This week in Peer Support students will revise what they have learned about resilience and discuss the
people who show them support. Through a story, the students identify where the character has used her
personal qualities, strengths and skills to help her overcome challenges. They identify times when she
needed support to continue. Students discuss a range of challenges and determine the best person to
approach for support. The students consolidate the protective factors for resilience by revising their own
strengths and skills and identifying five people they can go to for support. Remind your child of their
qualities and skills and encourage them to ask for help in challenging situations.
Save the Date: Grandparents and Special Friends Day F - 6 students will be hosting Grandparents and Special Friends Day Monday, 17th June 9:30 - 11:30am Silver and Grey buildings, Boort District School Morning tea in Silver building 11 - 11:30am
“How was school?”
Instead of asking your children questions such as, “How was school?” and, “What did you do today?” teach
them to reframe their day.
The following is a game which can be played over dinner, in the car or just hanging out. Everyone must
answer three questions:
1) What did someone do today to make you happy?
2) What did you do to make someone else happy?
3) What have you learned today?
This simple exercise helps us all find the positive in every day. It teaches gratitude, nurtures optimism, and
recognises kindness. It doesn’t matter what may have happened at work or school, or how stressed any of us
may have felt, the whole mood seems to lift once we’ve played this game. You learn things about your kids
that they’d probably never have thought to tell you otherwise. Try it. It might just become the highlight of
your day.

terjee, author of the Stress Solution

VCE Drama
On Thursday, 9th May the VCE Drama class, Ronan, Chloe, Acacia, Frances and Haley, attended an Ensemble
Exchange workshop at the Malthouse Theatre. They were required to present their original ensemble to the
three other schools who were represented. Our students volunteered to go first, and they proved highly
entertaining, garnering huge laughs from their audience. Their performance was followed by a feedback
session, where they heard ideas from the workshop leaders, as well as the students and teachers from the other
schools. They then watched the performances of the other schools, which was both entertaining and
educational.
After a break, the students were mixed with the students from the other schools and given a stimulus, from
which they developed a short performance. Their topic was Social Media Detox, and all of the performances
were thought-provoking and utilized lessons from the workshop.
We all got a great deal out of the experience, and have taken elements back to our class to improve the
ensemble performance, which is one of the assessment tasks for Drama.
The class is heading to Bendigo on Friday to attend the Melbourne Theatre Company performance of ‘The
Violent Outburst the Drew Me to You’. This will then be analysed by the students as another of their
assessment tasks.
The Ensemble will perform in the Drama Room at 7.30pm on Monday, 27th May, in front of family and friends.
