Elderly Especially Susceptible To The Heat Many people might choose a nice, hot day over a blustery, cold afternoon. However, excessively hot d ays can not only feel uncomfortable, but they can also prove life-threatening. Elderly men & women, in parti cular, are susceptible to the effects of hot temperatures.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people ages 65 & older are more prone t o heat stroke & heat-related stress than those of other ages. Seniors’ bodies are not able to adjust to sud den changes in temperature as quickly as younger people’s. A chronic condition that affects the body’s response to heat, as well as taking certain prescription medications also may play a role in seniors’ susceptibility to t he heat.

The City of Sacramento Department of Parks & Recreation says that around 370 deaths from heat-relate d illnesses occur across the United States each year. Nearly half of those deaths are people who are 6 5 & older. Prolonged heat exposure can take quite a toll on the average person. Factor in the more delicate hea lth of many seniors, & the hot weather can be quite dangerous. Further compounding the problem is higher energy costs. Seniors living on fixed incomes may not be able to afford to turn on air conditioners because of the power draw.

There are different types of heat-related injuries, though heat exhaustion & heat stroke are the mos t common. Here are signs that a person may be experiencing one or the other.

Heat Exhaustion * weakness * tiredness * heavy sweating * paleness * dizziness * nausea * vomiting * fainting * fast, weak pulse rate * headache * fast and shallow breathing

* extremely high body temperature (over 105 F) * red, hot and dry skin * absence of sweat * throbbing headache * dizziness * nausea

What to doFriends or family members should check in with an elderly relative or friend when the weather is esp ecially warm to ensure they’re safely handling the heat. In addition, people of all ages can take the following p recautions to keep cool when the temperatures rise.* Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages. Water & diluted fruit juices can help rehydrate the body quick ly.* Restrict physical activity.* Take a cool shower or bath or wipe yourself down with a damp cloth.* Seek an air-conditioned environment. For those who won’t or can’t turn on the air conditioning, visit a shopping mall or library to keep cool.* Wear lightweight clothing.* Try to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day.* Wear hats or use an umbrella to shield your head from sunshine outdoors.* Eat cool foods, but avoid extremely cold foods. Otherwise you risk the chance of developing stomac h cramps.* Do not do laundry or turn on appliances that contribute to extra indoor heat.The heat is nothing to take lightly, especially when it comes to your health.

Natural Ways To Reduce Lyme Disease Risk The great outdoors can be a wonder to behold. Parks, nature preserves or even some time spent in the backyard can help men, women & children reconnect with nature. While there is plenty to enjoy about the great outdoors, certain hazards are lurking. Ticks can be both a nuisance & a danger, potentially contributing to il lnesses like Lyme disease. Recognizing the dangers of ticks & how to avoid tick bites can help people reduce thei r risk for contracting Lyme disease.

Ticks are part of the arachnid family, but unlike spiders, ticks attach to the skin of an animal & s uck its blood. Ticks can be found just about anywhere, but they tend to gravitate toward wooded areas or tall grass es, which offer them protection & good vantage points to find an animal host. Ticks are routine problems for d ogs that are not properly protected. But ticks also prey on humans.

Many tick bites are harmless & do not require treatment. However, if bitten by a tick that is carryi ng Lyme disease people may need to take an antibiotic to prevent any lasting health effects. As a result, people sho uld always visit a doctor when bitten by a tick.

Pesticide repellants are some of the more effective & well-known methods to prevent tick bites & sub sequent side effects. Those who prefer to go a more natural route can take the following precautionary measu res.

• Watch habitats. Steer clear of grassy, wooded & brushy areas. Ticks also prefer humid conditions.

• Stick to trails when hiking or walking to avoid brushing up against areas where ticks may be hidin g out.

• Wear proper clothing. Light-colored clothing makes it easier to spot ticks that may have made thei r way onto a person. Tuck pants into socks, as ticks tend to climb onto hosts from the ground up.

• Protect hair & heads. Wear a hat and/or keep long hair contained so that it isn’t an attractive hi ding spot.

• Shower immediately. After coming in from areas known for ticks, shower & launder clothing immediat ely. While showering, do a spot inspection looking for ticks on your body.

• Clean up the yard. Make your yard less habitable to ticks by mowing the grass regularly & removing leaf litter & trim shrubs. Also, use wood chips or gravel to serve as a barrier between lawns & wooded areas of th e property.

• Use natural oils. Ticks may not like the smell of garlic, lemon, eucalyptus, lavender, & rosemary, among others. Dotting your body with these infused oils may make you less attractive to ticks.

Control Mold When Using Air Conditioning

Why Have A Funeral? Sometimes I am asked the question, “Why have a funeral?” The death of a loved one, for most of us, is the hardest event that we as humans will face. God our father tells us in the Holy Scriptures that Jesu s wept. Jesus wept at the tomb of his friend Lazarus; & in doing so, God through Christ, understands the pain & sa dness that we experience when someone we love dies. So there is importance in our rites of visitation & funera l services.

The importance of the visitation is in allowing a time for the community to respond to our pain of l oss & separation from our loved one. It’s an opportunity to receive comfort & support from those around u s. It’s also an opportunity to allow the healing balm of God to be applied, remembering the words of Christ, when three or more are gathered in my name, there I am. Most visitations occur in the evening, allowing for adequa te time for necessary conversations to occur as well as sacred moments with the deceased.

The funeral ceremony, for those of the Judeo-Christian beliefs, is an opportunity to give thanks to God for the creation & life of our loved one. Millions of grilling enthusiasts take to their backyards each year to cook delicious foods over an open flame. Grilling is embedded in the history of many cultures, & to this day many people feel nothing beats the savory flavor characteristic of grilled meats, poultry, seafood, & vegetables.

Although many people safely enjoy outdoor barbecues every day, accidents can happen. According to the U.S. Fire Admin., roughly 6,000 grill fires take place on residential property every year in the U.S. Many grilling accidents can be prevented with some safety precautions & a little common sense.

Tips For Safe Home Grilling

When grilling, place the grill in a safe location. Grills should be at least 10 feet away from the h ouse when they are in use. Also, keep the grill away from wooden overhangs, garages & porches.

Before using a gas grill, inspect it to make sure there are no gas leaks. Ensure hoses are properly connected & that the grill looks in good repair. Use propane & charcoal grills outdoors only. Never bring such grills into your house, even if it seems like there is ample ventilation. Potentially fatal carbon monoxide can build up quickly.

Keep children & pets away from the grill area. Grills can be knocked over easily, & kids & pets may burn themselves if they bump into a hot grill.

Clean the grill regularly. Grease & fat buildup forms in the tray below the grill & can be quite fla mmable. By brushing off the grates after each use & periodically removing food & grease buildup, you can prevent flare-ups that may ignite the grill. Always tend the grill while cooking. Walking away for even a minute may lead to accidents.

Store unused propane tanks upright at all times to prevent leakage. Keep them outdoors & beyond the reach of children.Never smoke near propane cylinders & never move a lit grill. Keep a fire extinguisher handy in the event of a flare-up. A hose may not prove effective on a grease fire.

It’s also important to emphasize food safety. Invest in a food thermometer so you can test the inter nal temperature of foods & prevent foodborne illnesses. Grilling is a great & flavorful way to cook. But safety must remain a priority when grilling.

Pick up point will be at the Distillery canoe launch at approximately 1:00 PM. Drivers will be shuttled back to the beginning. She has three children, Ashley (David) Howe, Bo & Shayna Ferguson. Three beautiful grandchildren Bella, Harlow & Sawyer. Kara was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She started her chemo 4-12-16, the first of 12 rounds. It is an aggressive treatment with the intent of curing. She has wonderful & supportive friends & family & is truly blessed with the community support and encouraging words! She is especially grateful for her mother, Kathy Arnett, for all she does for her during this difficult time.
