A NOTE FROM THE EDITORNatalie
WELCOME TO BOOMBALOO! It’s not just
a website and a magazine, it’s a place for modern parents
to hang out, read, shop, learn and connect. I’m delighted to
welcome you to this place which I have worked my butt off to
create!
During the time I was building this place, I gave birth to my two
boys, one of whom has dietary challenges which add a fair bit
of work to his care and feeding. So I get it that juggling
multiple priorities is a modern day challenge for us all.
Because I was having kids while building my dream, what you’ll
find in these pages is a celebration of others who do it too –
not just balancing work and kids, but pursuing their dreams,
building something they are proud of, and sharing the fruits of
their labour with others. WWW.BOOMBALO.COM is global, natch,
but we wanted to pack this inaugural issue with lots of things
Vancouver (as well as the bigger world), to shine a light on the
incredible talent and ability that lives here.
Every day brings a new opportunity to meet yet another
fantastic individual, chasing a dream, influencing others, or
bringing great new products to the kid market. I look forward
to hearing from many more of you in the months to come so we
can continue to showcase your fabulousness!
It’s been a busy labour with others to bring this place to reality and now that it’s here I can’t wait to share it with you.
xx, Natalie

MonikaHibbs
It takes a lot of courage and hard work to go to Medical School. It also takes a lot of
courage to walk away once you know it’s just not for you. Monika Hibbs’ husband
encouraged her to start a blog to blow off steam from the pressure cooker of medicine
and the rest is, well, history! Unlike many celebrity bloggers, Monika’s style ideas and products are affordable and realistic. She responds to all inquiries and
messages, which is probably why her followers are so loyal. Those who have
worked with her say her heart is huge and always available to support others
in their quest to follow their own dreams.
few things you hope pop into their minds?
I hope they see me as a kind, giving and humble person.
My passion is to inspire and encourage other
women / moms in business - I hope that shines through
in everything I do.
Is this journey everything you thought it would be and
more?
I never expected to be where I am now. My journey
started off in medicine and slowly began to shift into
blogging and developed to where my personal brand is
now. I’m so thankful for all the opportunities that have
come my way; I absolutely love what I do.
The best part about your job? The down side to your job?
The best part is waking up and being excited for the day!
I love all the collaborations and projects that I get to take
part in. Since I work from home, I think the down side is
simply time management.

You have had such an amazing year. Can you share with us a “secret” that you’re working on for 2015?
Oh my, I don’t have secrets! 2015 will be a huge year for us, since we’ll be building our new home! We’re so
months of the year... we’ll then see where that takes us.

Vancouver, BC is home to you. What are some of your
favourite stores to shop for kids and adult items?
I love driving into Vancouver for a shopping trip. For
Liam, I always like to check out baby Gap, Zara and my
favourite baby boutique, Leuie, on South
Granville. For me - I love Rebecca Bree Boutique on
West 4th, high fashion for the modern day woman and
fashion forward mom!
The biggest thing for moms that work from home is the
balance between work and the “family”. When & how do
you “shut it down”? Can you share with us any tips to try
and balance the two?

like to take a minute and remind myself what’s important.
If I need to go for a walk with Liam to simply get out of the house, I will. Thomas the train is our best friend, Thomas makes everything okay!
What’s one Holiday family tradition you have started with your own family. Can you share with us?
One of our favourites is going on the Stanley Park Christ-mas train with our family. There are about 50 of us that go, and yes we take up the whole train. We took Liam
excited to see all the sparkling lights and tried his best to stay awake! I can’t wait to see his reaction this year! I have a feeling he’s going to love it even more!

What’s the one big thing you’ve learned about
yourself when you became a mom?
I’ve learned that I can have an ample amount of pa-
tience. It is a choice, not something that just comes
to you. The strength of patience while learning to be
a mom goes a long way. I’m amazed at what my lit-
tle guy has taught me in this area. The way he wants
to discover every aspect of life and yet is so fragile
has brought an extra sense of calmness and peace
over me. I absolutely love that he has that power
over me.

ARE YOU READY
FOR A NEW SLEEP
ROUTINE?10 tips to create
healthy sleep
1/Be consistent, whatever it is you are doing. Create a routine. We are creatures of habit and love to know what’s next.
2/The less vices the better. Soothers, bouncy chairs on vibrate, your Meile vacuum cleaner, running in the baby’s room all night. Or worse…YOU! These are all quick fix solutions with very little longevity. A sound machine with white noise is a fantastic tool, (just make sure it runs all night) and a great swaddle or sleep sac might do the trick.
3/Make that room BLACK! If you are still night feed-ing, use your phone as a flashlight, it works won-ders. Night lights are for toddlers.
4/Less is more. Go easy on the stuffed animals (one lovey is plenty), mobiles, toys and lights. Could you sleep in a Led Zepplin light show, probably not, so let’s create a calm envi-ronment.
5/When you need to feed or change baby at night it is not playtime. This is business. It should be quiet and dark and there should be as little interac-tion as possible. 6/
Remember you are an amazing parent, and you are doing a great job, don’t let the over eager unhelp-ful people in your life make you feel differently. And yes, it’s normal to feel completely overwhelmed! Your baby didn’t arrive at your door with a “How To Guide”.
8/Start paying close at-tention to baby’s tired signals. Eye rubbing, ear pulling, arm thwacking, and yawning. I have a three-yawn rule; by the third yawn it’s time to go down.
7/Put your baby down awake. I know this can be difficult at times, (espe-cially cause they’re so cuddly) but it’s best for everyone. Imagine going to sleep in one place and waking up in another, (the movie “The Hangover” comes to mind) this creates confusion and anxiety. This also creates a vice; you, meaning, they need you to fall asleep. Encouraging baby to be an in-dependent sleeper is a great start for healthy sleep habits.
2 0 | B O O M B A L O O M A G A Z I N E
10/Always trust your gut! You know your baby better than anyone else. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it! Crying it out for 3 hours while you listen to Katy Perry on your iPod, and feeling like a terrible parent, is not going to create a good vibe for anyone. Some people find this works for them, but most find it traumatizing. Create an emotional balance. If you are stressing so are they. Calm yourself and leave your emotions at the door.
9/Get Dad involved. Your baby can smell your milk! It’s yummy and they want it. Let dad go in and do the night-time soothing, or put baby to bed. It’s a great bonding time for them. Dads like feel-ing important too.

K L I K P H O T O G R AP H Y
Q: Besides a lack in the market for this type of Multi-Use Bib,
what inspired you to venture out and become a Mompreneur?
A: I would say I have always had an entrepreneurial spirt. When I
was young I was the kid setting up lemonade stands, garage sales,
bake sales and whatever else I could drum up to make a buck. I
always knew I wanted to take the opportunity to start a business
while on maternity leave; I just never knew what it was. When our
daughter was born I realized that our necessity may be other
parents’ necessity, and numpfer was born!
Q: Where did the name Numpfer
come from?
A: Numpfer is actually my childhood
nickname (along with many others).
Q: What made you decide to

white with just a touch of
colour?
A: We didn’t learn the gender
of our baby while I was pregnant
and I found it very
difficult to find gender
neutral baby items so I wanted
to keep Numpfer neutral. The
great thing about Numpfer is
that it will go with any nursery,
stroller, outfit, gender for years
to come and parents & gift
givers never have to think twice
about it.
Q: Since Numpfer has
launched, what has been the
biggest shock to you?
A: The amazing group of
people (friends, family,
Instagram..) I have been in
contact with and have learned
from. It has been a very
inspiring experience.
Sarah Robbins, founder of Numpfer, with daughter, Charlotte
2 2 | B O O M B A L O O M A G A Z I N E
Q: What has been your biggest
obstacle with the company?
A: Honestly, I have been working in
restaurants for my whole career thus far
and knew very little about retail. I have
learned a lot in this past year and
continue to learn as I go. I love what I do
and it keeps me going and keeps me
inspired and positive.
Q: Are more great products in the horizon? Can you share
a concept with us?
A: I am tossing up a few ideas, you will have to stay tuned...
Q: The fabric is so incredibly soft. We LOVE it! How did you
choose from so many options out there?
A: I knew it had to be soft and organic. Before I had Charlotte I
remembered when I would shop for baby gifts with my mom and
she would always deeply inspect the clothing to make sure it was
incredibly soft with no hidden scratchy bits lingering on the inside
of the garment. I held that memory when I was designing
the bib and blanket. Super soft, no velcro, no fasteners of any kind.
Only the best for baby’s brand new perfect skin.
B O O M B A L O O M A G A Z I N E | 2 3
Q: As a new and fast moving company, what would you
want your potential customers and buyers to know about you
that we may not already know?
A: Since I have worked in restaurants for so many years
I pride myself on prompt customer service and always want
people leaving happy and satisfied with our products.
Q: Your daughter recently
just turned 1; what’s one thing
she has taught you about
motherhood this past year?
A: She has taught me so
much about what is
important in life. She has
taught me to be brave, to be
patient, to be motivated.
She has brought me so much
joy and love. Being her mother
is truly the best ‘job’ I have
ever had.
Q: As BOOMBALOO gets
ready to launch we have
met so many incredible,
honest, humble and
hard-working Moms (&
Dads) just like you that are
building these incredible
companies. What advice do
you have to someone
pondering starting their
own?
A: All I can say is do it!!
Give it a go because you
never know unless you try!

Our store, Spruce Collective, is a curated collection of

our hometown of Abbotsford, BC and, after a series
of very serendipitous events, found ourselves open-
ing a brick + mortar store just over two years ago.
Creating unique spaces that combine the beauty of
the old with the modern sensibilities of the new is
our passion. We always encourage our customers to
use what they already have...use that “good” china,
put fresh frames around those old family photos,
and embrace the worn beauty of treasures that have
been passed down. We see the beauty in the
imperfect and all agree that it’s a good balance of old
layered with the new that brings warmth +
personality to a home.
In addition to our eclectic selection of boutique
home decor and vintage treasures, we’ve also
expanded into fashion, jewelry and children’s goods
while running a bustling vintage rental division,
supplying vintage furniture and decor items to

weddings and other events in the Greater
Vancouver area.
We love sourcing out other local businesses and
stock handmade + sustainable goods whenever
possible. Some of our favourite handmade goods
can be found in our growing baby + children’s cor-
ner. Kevi is on the go with a busy toddler +
to keep her little drooler looking fresh and stylish.
Elisa’s kids may be grown but that doesn’t keep
her from playing around with the adorable
wooden “Instagram” cameras handmade by From
the Seeds! Monica is a country girl at heart and
mom of 3 and thinks Minimocs are a must-have
for babies + toddlers alike. Jessica is an artist and
children’s books, especially ones she can read to
her son, Elliot. Lily loves the colourful mama and
kid-sized wooden bead necklaces from Coral +

Your work is everywhere. Can you share with us a few places where it has been credited?
Style at Home Magazine, Glitter Guide (online)
Describe your style?
I would describe my style as classic with a twist. I love design
that can outlast trends. Clean, bright aesthetics are definitely a
favourite.
Where does your passion to design come from?
I grew up in a family of builders and artists. I’ve always
appreciated how putting effort into the design of a home can
make everyone who lives there feel special and is welcoming for
guests. I love watching a client see their home come to its full
potential.
What’s ahead for StephanieJean.com this year?
Continuing to work with great clients and grow in every aspect
of my business.
The question we love to ask “working moms”; can you share with us one tip you have when it comes to balancing work life and home life?
For me it’s about remembering my priorities - keeping family
first and when I’m not working, making a conscious effort to be
present in even the little moments.
3 0 | B O O M B A L O O M A G A Z I N E
What is it you love about designing nurseries?
There’s nothing quite as exciting a bringing a new
member into your family. I love getting to be a part of
that excitement and creating a space that is inviting for
everyone in the family.
Can you share with us 3 tips to keep in mind when designing a neutral nursery?
Use gender neutral patterns such as stripes, stars and
polka dots (mixing patterns is a great idea!).
Incorporate interesting hardware on closets and dressers/
changing tables (Anthropologie is a good place to look). Think
about investing in an oversized, comfortable chair in a neutral
fabric that you can add a pattern/coloured pillow to once the
baby arrives - you will be spending a lot of hours
feeding, cuddling and reading to your baby there!
You are known for your custom drapery. Will this be available one day across the globe?
I would love to have a hand in creating textiles one day.
Pillows and drapery bring so much personality, warmth and
interest to a room. It’s definitely on my list of things I’d love to
do in the future.

moccs
Susan Petersen started making baby moccasins in 2009 after becoming frustrated
by the lack of well-designed baby shoes. Using her second child, Gus, as a
mocc-tester, and a bag of scrap leather she picked up at a yard sale, she began
experimenting with designs. Working at her kitchen table, on a shoestring budget,
Susan persisted through some disastrous attempts until she had created a pair of
moccasins that not only looked adorable on Gus’ chubby little feet, but stayed on his
feet as well.
Since then the moccasins have gone through about six design changes. Each change
purchase today are durable, well designed, and most importantly: stay on your child’s
foot.
Money was tight at the time Susan started and in order to earn money to start her
business she got resourceful. Her brother owns a window
installation business and in the summer of 2009 she convinced him to let her keep
the old windows that he was removing from the houses. She spent a whole
summer banging the glass out of the windows because they were encased in
aluminum frames. At the end of the summer she took the aluminum window frames
to the scrap yard and recycled them to get money. She made $200 dollars and with
that literal sweat equity, she started her business.

Yes, we know Jillian Harris doesn’t have children...but who cares when she has such great ideas?
Jillian was always interested in interior design, even before she caught celeb cred with a turn
on The Bachelor and ,currently, Love It or List It on HGTV. Her style is eclectic, unexpected
and refreshingly fun. Read on for tips to making your child’s room into a show-stopper.
Tips to keep in mind when decorating a children’s room?
I’ve never been a fan of primary colours like bubble
gum pink or purple. So, children’s rooms started out
as a challenge for me. Until I took on decorating my
best friend Kendra’s girls’ rooms. I sat them down, like
any client and asked them many important questions.
What makes them tick, what is their
favourite possession, who do they love the most.
I took all that into consideration and then decorated
the rooms timelessly with a pop of colour.
Having said that:
1. Consider what your child wants, but instead of
focusing on a theme or colour, ask deeper questions.
2. If the above is successful, you don’t have to paint
the room lime green and purple. You can create a more
timeless neutral pallet space and still make your child’s
heart go pitter patter when they walk into the room.
3 . Inject colour in ways that are easier to change
decision, let your child pick the colour, but then order
the paint colour that is 2 shades lighter and 2 shades
more neutral. The Eye is VERY sensitive and even a
pale pale muted pink will read as PINK!!! when painted
on a wall.
What are a few colour trends to look out for in a girl’s room in 2015? Boy’s room?
For girls, Parisian, less pinks and more blues and icy
blues and more industrial, neutrals, metals and woods!
Three staples to have in a child’s bedroom no matter what..

I LUNCH YOUBecoming a new parent is probably one of the most challenging positions you will ever take on. Strangely enough, it is worse if you have always been a high achiever or a perfectionist. People who have never failed at anything haven’t learned the valuable lessons that failure can provide. Luckily, babies do a great job of bringing you to your knees.
One of the first things you must learn is to abandon perfection in pursuit of much more important goals, like sleep, and eating an entire meal within an hour. It also means letting go of the notion that there is anything like a Perfect Parent.
New parents are so often driven to prove that having a baby won’t change a thing about their lives. They will still do the Grouse Grind, go kayaking, have friends over for exquisite gourmet meals, and cuddle on the couch with Netflix once the baby is down for the night. You’ve got to let that fiction go!
Having a baby will change your life; it’s supposed to! A baby isn’t a new car, or an accessory that can be controlled and assimilated. For quite a few years, your baby isn’t there for you: you are there for your baby. You are there to protect, to nurture, to love and if that means the house looks like hell and friends coming to visit have to bring pizza with them, that’s normal life.
One of the most reliable ways to tell your children you love them is to feed them. Human beings have a pretty simple hierarchy of needs and food is right up there, a fundamental focus.
I lunch you means pretty much the same thing as I love you. If you need help deciding where to invest the energies you have as parents, put them in the kitchen. Food brings people together; it creates traditions; it reassures and comforts.
After all, when Max came back from Where the Wild Things were, he lived happily ever after because he found his supper waiting for him. And it was still hot.

High school, plus a degree, once led to a promising career. “Once” is the operative word today, as many people have graduate degrees and can’t find jobs. What does this mean for our children; what will their job market look like? Our children will require a highly creative thought process to build a career for themselves, and we, as parents and caregivers, must nurture creativity in our wee ones from the moment they open their eyes. Creativity is important for young children; creating something with our hands leads to a sense of accomplishment and pride. Taking nothing and molding it into something builds confidence. The more we create, the more our feelings of self-worth and individuality grow.
For some of us, the idea of encouraging creativity in our children may seem daunting. Per-haps you don’t see yourself as a creative person; perhaps you associate creativity with only artistic endeavors. Don’t be fooled by that notion. We can be creative in the way we manage our finances, in gardening, in cooking, in just about anything. Consider these helpful tips when trying to encourage your children to be creative.
Babies:Let go of all your inhibitions. Turn a rattle into your microphone and belt out that tune you love to sing in the shower. Using a rattle to serve as a variety of objects can teach your child to look at things differently and not just for their functionality. This can help them think outside of the box.
Toddlers:Children are innately creative. Give a child a paper towel-roll and see how many different things it can become in 5 minutes: a spaceship or a trumpet. Get some basic art supplies and sit with your child for 10 minutes. Talk to your child about what he or she is creating and see where their imagination takes them. Sensory bins are great ways for toddlers to learn through play. Children easily turn piles of sand into enchanted forests and soapy water into underwater caves. Remember art materials are not the only way to enhance creativity: toddlers constantly learn through all of their senses.
Preschoolers:Play-dates are a great way to help foster creativity: children tend to grow and learn from each other. Have you ever watched what happens when you give a couple of preschoolers a large cardboard box? The box is almost always more fun than the toy it contained. With pre-schoolers all you need to do is supply the materials and they’ll let their imaginations grow.
School Age: It can be difficult to resist hovering, but it’s important to give your child space to explore independently. Hovering and monitoring are different. It helps to be close by to help your child expand some of those creative ideas and simultaneously keep them safe as creative ideas sometimes take flight into dangerous territories. Having a basket filled with some art supplies within your child’s reach is a great way for children to be creative whenever they feel that spark ignite. Keeping a basket of “old junk” around is also perfect for enhancing imaginations. Milk and egg cartons make great monsters, toilet paper rolls can become puppets and Kleenex boxes can be aquariums. The key is making sure the materials are easily and readily available for your child. Try and limit the amount of store bought toys; children should be encouraged to make their own props to incorporate into their dramatic play. Forget the costly big-ticket items and dig out the old dress-up box. Rummage through your closet, toss in that funky scarf, an old pair of heels and watch your child’s imagination work.

Where did your motivation come from to become a business owner?
Becoming a mother and shopping around for my
own needs gave me the idea that Vancouver needs
a one-stop shopping destination for moms and
location for everything under one roof with
knowledgeable staff and the highest level of service.
I wanted moms to be proud that they shop at my
store.
I wanted a store where quality, safety and service
would be the number one priority along with
competitive pricing. I was and am a big supporter of
Mompreneur, and of local and Canadian-made
products. I also wanted to ensure that we work with
companies that are mindful of their impact on our
environment.
AlI of this is what I yearned for as a mom; so,
Lussobaby was born in October 2009. Not so
ironically, my oldest son was born in January 2010.
Why Lussobaby? What does it stand for?
Lusso is an Italian word meaning luxury. We strive to
provide a luxurious experience for every customer that
walks into our stores, and we deliver it with
affordable pricing.
What do you hope people think of when they think of "Lussobaby"?
We have been embraced by our clientele and are hum-
bled by the support we have received from our com-
munity and beyond. We’ve become the go-to store for
anything baby and kids related due to our wide
assortment of quality products, our customer
experience and our convenience of ordering online.
I hope moms are proud to shop at our store as I had
wished when I opened it.

A wife, a mother, a "Mompreneur". What is one piece of advice you have for other women wanting to follow their dreams of owning their own business?
there is passion behind your concept. You are not start-
ing it because you always envisioned being a business
owner. Starting your own business is not easy; there will
be lots of ups and downs. You need to be ready to meet
them head on, and never give up!
Secondly, set your guidelines for how you envision
balancing work and family. It’s different for everyone,
your own business. Having a healthy work-life balance is
a key to success.
Lastly, make sure you setup a strong support
network. Ensure that you have people who are
willing and able to help in the areas that
complement your strengths. I am lucky that my
husband, mom, dad and mother-in-law have my back. I
would not be able to do this without
them.
Starting your own business is not glamorous or a
stress-reducer; however, it is very rewarding,
educational and usually fun. Work hard and never give
up, even when things may not be going well.
What does a day "balancing it all" really look like for you?
My husband and my beautiful boys are so dear to my
heart that I always want to do everything for them, but it
can also be very challenging with the business’ needs. It
has taken me years, but I have come to realize that there
are days that so many things are going on, that I just
can’t manage them all. This is now normal for me. I have
not met anyone that is able to manage everything all the
time. When this happens, I reprioritize and reevaluate
everything and ask for help!
On a good day, I have breakfast with my boys; play a
little bit with them before I take my oldest to school.
I answer all my emails and complete my to-do-list for
the day and visit one of our stores before picking up my
son from school. Then I spend some more time with my
boys, have a family dinner, and get them ready for bed.
After the boys sleep, I go back to my computer and try to
get some more work done.
Tell us one trait your kids have taught you about being a “Mom”?
They have taught me patience and to always look at the
glass half full.
Would you like your kids to join the business when they are older?
My dream is for my kids to follow their dreams; to
achieve their goals with our support and do what they
are passionate about. Nevertheless, my older son already
speaks about joining my husband and me in our
businesses. We encourage him to have an
entrepreneurial mindset and we feel our approach to
business is rubbing off on him.
What’s the hardest aspect of being a biz mom?
The hardest aspect is having a healthy work-life
balance. My kids and family are my priority and I want to
spend much time with them taking care of their needs.
But as a business owner I have to ensure the company
needs are cared for as well. Juggling both aspects of my
The Holidays are almost here. What’s one family tradition you have with your family?
We love celebrating the holidays as a family. My oldest
son will go through all his toys that he does not need
anymore and we will donate them to a charity before he
can ask Santa for new things. It is very important to us to
raise our kids to be generous, caring and compassionate.
This has become a new family tradition in our household.

Birdling Bags was founded by two New Jersey-based young moms and bestfriends, Courtney and Meagan.
Born out of the need for an organized travel bag, Birdling Bags has grown into a necessity for
family ventures away from the nest.
O R G A N I Z E E V E R T H I N G .
In 2012, Courtney’s daughter Tess was born.
Courtney went to pack Tess’s stuff for their first
weekend away and even though Tess was only nine
pounds, it seemed she needed to pack a ton for her.
A weekend away with a baby is hard enough, but
she quickly realized that her unorganized bag made
it that much harder. After unpacking, she was not
sure who was a bigger jumbled mess -- her bag or
herself. Feeling frustrated, she knew that there had
to be a better way. The idea for their flagship Week-
ender bag came one sleepless night soon after.
She knew that Meagan, her childhood friend and
creative mother to three little children, would be
the perfect partner to make this dream a reality.
After researching the market they realized there
is a major lack of high quality and functional
family travel bags. After one year, five prototypes,
three manufacturers and four kids between them to
chase after, they finally got it right! They are
proud to say the bags are American made.
From the brass hardware and oversized
zipper, to the heavy duck canvas and genuine
leather, it is clear that no corners were cut during the
manufacturing process. Knowing the wear and tear
traveling with kids can put on anything (or any-
one) they created a bag that will stand up to most
challenging trips, while maintaining a classic look.
Since officially launching in May 2014, the consum-
er response has been overwhelmingly positive. The
past six months have been very busy for them
and they have been shipping bags all over North
America and overseas to the UK, India, and even as far
as Australia. They have expanded their collection to
include a smaller overnight bag as well as kid’s
t-shirts and have more products in the works. Their collec-
tion is sold through their online boutique www.birdling.
com as well as in a handful of New Jersey retail boutiques.
Today, these two moms spend their days growing the
Birdling brand and their young families. Between
trips to the manufacturing warehouse, the post office
and of course picking up their kids from school, these
two momtrepreneurs wouldn’t have it any other way!
